Why Does Windows 7 System Freeze After It Sits Inactive For A While
May 28, 2010
why does my Windows 7 system freeze after it sits inactive for a while?I have a problem that is bothering me to no end. I guess not seeing it in front of you or being able to connect with my PC I would think it might be a challenge. But at this point maybe you can give me a few suggestions. I am running a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro. I have 3GB of RAM and I have 2 hard drives on my system. Every once in a while if I let my PC sit inactive and come back to do something, with it at the desktop or with a browser open, I will have to click my mouse three or four times and then my system comes to a complete halt and freezes--forcing me to turn the power off and restart my system. It goes through the process of loading Windows and asks me if or how I want to start my system, I always choose normally and not in safe mode. My question or problem is when and why my PC will freeze?I have checked my device manager and everything is OK and no yellow warning marks.

I was surfing the net today when my laptop suddenly reboots and i was required to launch Startup Repair. However, after the loading files bar, it does nothing but shows the blue bg with the cursor - there's no indication (like 'Attempting Repair' or etc) that it is doing anything in the background. It is supposed to be like this?Ive tried restarting the laptop in safe mode but it auto reboots to the screen where i only have two options of either launching the Startup Repair or launch normally (which i can't). Ive pressed F8, tried launching launching repair but it still ends up to the blue bg screen, doing nothing.I haven't installed any new software or Hardware though i hvae been leaving my laptop on for days on end to download stuff

I started to notice a few days ago that my computer was running extremely slow, it happened when I was tranfering MP3's to my Mp3 Player. Now I've never had the problem of it moving slow and ive done this process while watching movies and other things as well. I stopped the transfer process, restarted my computer. I tried the transfer again and the same thing happened. I opened up Task Manager and looked at the CPU, it was fine, however the RAM was at almost 100% usage (I have 4Gb of RAM), and all I had running was Avast, and Windows Media Player (which was transferring my Mp3's). So I stopped the process again and restarted my computer logged in and everything was fine. When i finished with my computer I got up went and did some things that took a few hours, came back and went to get on the internet and the same sluggish performance happened again. Now I've done many things, every system/virus scan, defrag, scandsk, deleted programs I do not use,and I even bought new RAM, changed my Virtual Memory settings with help from a friend, and absolutely nothing has worked. The strange thing is it seems if I am actively using it say searching the web it seems fine but when its just sitting there doing nothing is when the problem seems to happen.Last night before bed I decided to boot my comp in Safe Mode and leave it on just to see if the sluggishness would be in Safe Mode, well i woke up this morning and it was fine, was just as I left it initially. Now i've read many things it could be from Memory Leaking to to many programs running upon startup (which I know isnt the case as I am very picky about that) but I am at a loss so i thought I would ask here.Should the computer being fine in Safe Mode tell me that there is some sort of virus or some program that is acting maliciously on part of my RAM?

Initial symptoms began when I decided to give Win 8 a try. Immediately after the Windows 8 install my system would become unresponsive/freeze, but never had a BSOD. Mouse was still functional but unable to actually do anything. Forced me to power cycle the PC. I ran memory diagnostics and attempted to use the repair options built into the OS, but no resolution. After trying to fix the Windows 8 freezing I decided to go back to Win-7 HP 64Bit. I performed a clean install keeping only personal files and the windows.old old folder. With the new install I ran all the needed updates in Update manager and updated all the drivers as needed. For the first couple days all was well and then the OS would freeze/hang/become unresponsive... required power cycling to reboot. As of late, the system would boot to log-in screen but would either freeze when I typed a character or moved the mouse. Other times it would hang after entering my password and never load the desktop. There have been times when I couldn't even boot to safe mode[with networking] or [cmd].
So today is throwing me for a loop because I am on the affected computer and all seems to be operating perfect.I am at a loss for understanding, why be broke for 1.5 - 2 weeks and now suddenly work like a charm?I ran SFC and have errors that cannot be fixed automatically. Event viewer has a lot of friendly red icons and a few more mellow yellows. So I am asking for help in resolving the issues that exist with my OS, hoping to learn and avoid installing the Backup image i have from late last year.

It seems that when I use an OS newer then XP 32-64bit, my pc crashes randomly. Tried Vista 32-64bit, same problem, Windows 7 32-64bit still occuring. I beleive I found in the admin tools that the Kernel/Power keeps failing. Does anyone know a way to find out if that is really the problem and what can I do to solve the problem. Ran memory Diagnostics and found nothing. Also ram is all the same 1GB sticks of memory. So if there is a way to scan my system for problems or what ever can be done to find the problem.

Just recently installed Windows 7 x64 RC1 (Build 7100) on my HP DV6000 notebook, it has core2duo and integrated video card, etc.
The main issue I am having is that, everything works just fine (even faster than vista sometimes, which originally came with my notebook), but randomly, the system will stop responding (everything about it, the system will even stop sending data packets out over wireless or lan), and the harddrive light will lit up (not blinking just constant lit).
The mouse usually can be moved about but it cannot be used to click anything. After a few minutes the system will go back to normal. This is absolutely horrible when I am playing a game, as I would have to keep my fingers on the keyboard just incase the game would "defrost" suddenly.
The same issue also happened when I install the 32bit of Windows 7 rc1 on the same notebook. However this is not happening on my P4 notebook (IBM R40) so I can only assume that this is a hardware issue. But I have no references/parameters on how to trouble-shoot this. Anyone got a clue?

The last couple of weeks I've been having this issue where my computer will freeze/lock-up hard. And by hard I mean that I can't launch the Task Manager, move the mouse cursor, or anything...it's completely unresponsive. To get the machine working again I have to physically restart it using the Power button or the Reset button. I initially thought that it was overheating, so I opened up the case and gave it a good cleaning with a compressed air duster and verified that the fans worked properly. No dice. I then reformatted and reinstalled Windows. Again, no luck...the issue just keeps happening. I ran MemTest overnight, and that came through clean. I haven't found any issues from Disk Check, and MSE comes back with a clean report. Here are my system specs:
Windows 7 Professional x64, Retail
Core2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
Asus P5K SE/EPU
6 GB RAM
nVidia Geforce 9800 GT
2x 500 GB HD, 1x 320 GB HD
Last, but not least, I ran a System Health Report that's attached to this post. I took a look through it, and I'm a little confused by some of the errors it found. Namely, I don't have a PS/2 keyboard; my printer is working just fine; I've uninstalled LogMeIn, and I have MSE installed. The Health Report seems to be..

I've been wanting to re-live this classic for a while now, but after running flawlessly on my Windows 7 x64 system it freezes, locking the entire system and requires a full restart (No BSOD, just entire system lock-up). I've researched everywhere and tried everything in my power to try and get this game to work without crashing (Compatibility mode, patches/addons etc) but to no avail. Other forums have said the game works fine on both 64 and 32 bit versions of Windows 7 so I'm wondering if it may be my hardware...
Specs:
MOBO: Gigabyte P965-S3
GFX: nVidia 8800GTS 640mb
RAM: 4GB/800Mhz DDR2
CPU: Q6600 2.4Ghz
OS: Windows 7 RC x64
DUAL-MONITOR SETUP
I even tried emulating the game in a VM but it doesn't recognise the graphics card (Didn't expect to to on a VM...)

I have both a windows vista and win 7 laptop, while using the computer if more then one window is open. The inactive windows will pop up over the foreground window. Maybe part of a new windows feature? I don't think its a malware issue its present on both laptops one being brand new. It makes working on the computers rather hard ...

My system seems to randomly freeze once every couple of weeks, but has done so twice today and cost me some work so I thought I'd try and resolve it.The freeze occurs with the open browser becoming unresponsive to mouse or keyboard. I can still activate already open browsers from the hot bar but they're also unresponsive. Mouse still moves and if I have an application open already (today it was the calculator) that will be responsive to both mouse and keyboard, I was able to do sums still. That then becomes unresponsive after a minute or so. Hot keys don't work, like alt-tab or ctrl-alt-delete. Windows start button still opens up to menu, but applications won't open from there. All are unresponsive.Hard reset and Windows boots with no problems, everything working again. [code]

So I'm having this irritating problem where, when I'm running any program fullscreen, it will randomly "minimize" every few minutes and go back to the desktop as if I'd alt-tab'd out of it. Problem is, I didn't. I relate the problem to watching your favorite movie, only the screen turns off every few minutes because that's just what it feels like doing. This gets especially annoying when gaming. The problem exists with windowed programs as well, although to a slightly lesser extent. The window randomly becomes "inactive" as if I'd clicked out of it. This disrupts things like typing and playing flash games (this isn't in the games section because the problem persists for ANY program run, it's just that a lot of these programs happen to be games).I've tried cleaning up my disk drive and cleaning out my registry, and I've restarted my computer twice I think. This problem happens regardless of background programs, including Skype and Steam, and, most importantly, no error message or notification of any sort appears when this happens.

How do I make tray icons behave like in Windows XP, when "Hide inactive icons" is ON? I only see options to show all icons which is equivalent to unchecking "Hide inactive icons" in XP. And also options for each tray icon whether to always show it with notification, hide icon and show notification only and hide both icon and notification. But how to make them hide when inactive and unhide after if there is activity with them?

I am performing an image recovery. I have 4 DVDs that came with my laptop from geeksquad. They say HP System Backup. Everything runs smoothly in disc 1. When I get to disc 2 nothing happens at all. I do have an external hard drive. I was considering trying to copy the System back up discs from a different computer onto the external and then trying to do the system restore.

When i start up my comp and log in everything looks ok, i can click any icon on my desktop and they work, but my windows taskbar is inactive. The only way i have found so far around this problem is to ctrl/alt/del which takes me to the green admin page where i can start task manager, when task manager is clicked it automaticly sends me to desktop and i can then use the taskbar.

i not using english OS at the time, so i directly translated the message, but the actuall mesage is:The selected volume is on a dynamic disk when i select the location to save.hi, I so just reinstalled my os a few days ago, and today, i finally finish installing all the basic programs, so i opened up windows back up and select my data drive to backup on (D: ) but under it, theres that yellow triangle notification saying that the selected partition is on a active drive.for my understanding, active drive is only suppose to be my C: drive, so i opened up diskmanagement to check, and C: drive is actually inactive, but it is my system drive tried marking D as inactive with diskpart, but it doesnt change anything, it still says it is active, and if i mark C as active in diskmanagement, the OS wont load. So i put my Windows 7 disk back in and change it back to what it was

I successfully restored lots of 'orphan' messages, one by one. Now I have the tedious task of moving them back to the folders they started in, from the Storage Folders to the account-related ones. It is tedious because you have to manually create each individual folder in the target area. But why bother? At least for relatively inactive files? That is, what is the operational difference between Storage Folders and the account-related ones? I cannot find a simple description of that elsewhere.

I was hit with a smarthdd infection, which has been successfully removed. However, (whether related to it or not ?) after having this infection the pc has been randomly "not responding". It may go for 24+ hours and not freeze up at all and I think it's fixed, but then it does it again. It usually happens more over a longer period of inactivity, but not always. If I leave the pc alone, the screen saver comes on and does it's thing. But sometimes when I come back, move the mouse, click on an icon and I get that little blue circle spinning (windows "not responding"). Then mouse and keyboard commands are non responsive - the mouse does move around the screen with no problem. I have to hold the power button down to shut off, upon restart the pc runs absolutely fine, from what I can see. When it freezes, sometimes the taskbar (usually hidden) will pop up, other times no. I have a desktop gadget clock installed and have seen when it has frozen, which is prior to when I have attempted to wake up the pc, not AT the time of wake up. I haven't had any issues of it freezing while using the pc (working offline, browsing, music, video etc). The machine is working very well, other than for this random exception.
I have played with power settings - thinking that it may have to do with the machine sleeping and not waking up, but even if I have it set to "never sleep", it still freezes. This seems to be a common issue but very difficult for a "non expert" to diagnose/navigate on my own.

I've recently upgraded to Windows 7 ult(clean install with mech upgrade as well). Everything seems to work fine but I noticed that whenever I open my web browser or work on document, the page I'm browsing or working on goes inactive. For example, just now as I type this post, the page goes inactive and the cursor disappears so I have to click back on the page.
I've updated the driver for the mouse and alse used my old mouse. The problem remains.

We have Windows 7 x64 and needed to run older QuickBooks software. I installed XP Mode and everything works great except when it comes to printing. I installed the HP LaserJet 1320 USB printer and used TSPort 001 and everything worked. The next time the user stated XP Mode the TS port 001 was inactive. I switched to an active port TS008 and printing worked again. The next time the user started XP Mode the TS port TS008 that was just active gets switched to inactive so I have to change it back to the original port TS 001 and then it works again.

Very recently my wireless USB mouse has stopped working on my Windows 7 (Dell Studio XPS1640) laptop.>Unplugging and plugging it back in does not work, but restarting does, until it mysteriously conks out again>Mouse does work on other computers in the home>No other usb devices are recognized by the PC (leading me to think it has nothing to do with the mouse and everything to do with USB controller suddenly deciding it doesn't like hardware)>USB slots on computer still have power, I can run my notebook cooler through the USB with no issues.Unsure if formatting helped. Windows had a lot of clutter and some weird quirks, so I formatted this morning. No troubles with reinstall, everything should be fully updated now, thought my problems were over but the mouse just conked again.

I have a program that uses a 360 controller. When the window is in focus it send the information fine. However when I have other windows focused it does not (this was expected). I constantly use the other windows so it can be a pain to select the window every time instead of just picking up the 360 controller and still control the program.
how I might redirect the input to the non focused window?
