Vista To Win7 - Upgrade Or Clean Install ?
I have windows Vista business with SP1 installed on a Dell Latitude laptop D830. I have run Windows upgrade advisor , it is giving me clear signal to upgrade to windows 7 professional or ultimate. Now with so much news about upgrade problems occurring. Should I upgrade or do clean install? Also I want to know , if there is a difference between windows 7 upgrade and windows 7 full version? With windows 7 full version, Can I get the upgrade option also?

Student Upgrade From Vista Ultimate 64 Bit Without A Clean Install
I purchased the academic version of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit under an apparent misunderstanding that I could upgrade and not have to do a complete reinstall which would cost me 3 days of thesis development time to reinstall the Autodesk, Adobe & other software that I use. Could someone please explain to me why (after paying a higher price for Vista Ultimate in the first place) I cannot purchase a student version of Windows 7 Ultimate or upgrade without a clean install which requires a complete reinstall of all of the programs on my computer? Is there something that I am overlooking?

Clean Install Via Win7 Upgrade
I'm currently running Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I'm going to buy Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit upgrade. I want to do a clean install on a new hard drive I just bought. I'm going to put the current Vista hard drive on SATA 1 The new hard drive for Win 7 will be on SATA 0 I can't figure out what procedure to use so Win 7 Upgrade sees the old activated Vista to activate Win 7. In short, I want a clean install via Win 7 upgrade media on a seperate hard drive. Can anyone help with this?

Dual Boot - Can I Upgrade To Win7 On Partition As Clean Install ?
I understand upgrade (install over) Win 7 RC to Win 7 Release is not recommended. Will I be able to install to the current Win 7 partition with the release 'upgrade' ISO as a clean install,(format and install by installer)?I know upgrade is supposed to mean one already has either a retail license or OEM license for that machine; but I'd prefer todo a clean install while not losing access to my data on the XP partition. How does the installer confirm the existence of the license have you enter the key from the original license? Some sysems came without install media.I got XP Mode VM working in Win 7 RC and I figured to use it to run my apps while I convert to current versions of (Win 7 supported) those apps. Anything I can't run on Win 7 natively I figured to leave on the VM.

Updating Vista/Win7 Dual Boot With Clean
I have my current system with Vista x64 on the C drive dual-booting with Windows 7 RC installed on the F drive. Is there a way to install the Windows 7 RTM to my C drive without destroying my Win 7 RC version? I want to leave it there until I have everything installed and working. Then I can format the F drive and start clean. Or would it be better to just add the new Dual-boot to C drive and then remove the old Vista?

Upgrade Install Fails, Clean Install Is Fine - Same Hardware
When I try to do an upgrade install (from Vista Ultimate SP1 32-bit) it always fails toward the end of "migrating files, settings and programs" at about the 57% mark. The program says that it needs to reboot.The screen goes blank and it looks like it is rebooting, however the PC just sits there, the monitor goes to sleep (no video - either analog or DVI) so there is apparently not even a BIOS screen. There is no drive activity, yet the PC is still powered on. If I power off and on (or use the reset button), Windows 7 starts to load but eventually blue screens with the STOP error 0x0000007B, followed by (0x80598B68, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I know that the first error code usually refers to an inacessible boot disc. After several tries, it lets me boot, but just tells me that the install failed and is rolling back to Vista, which it does (rather well, I must say).However, if I do a "clean" install (whether or not choose to let Windows 7 wipe out the existing Vista partition), the install completes flawlessly.Apparently, Windows 7 is having problems migrating something (perhaps drivers?) from the existing Vista installation, but I don't know what. I've tried uninstalling a few various programs and hardware devices and their associated drives to no avail. Luckily, all of this testing is on a cloned drive, so no permanant damage.The hardware is exactly the same whether I do the upgrade or clean install. Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas.Â

Upgrade Media - Clean Install From Installed Win 7 Upgrade ?
I did an in place upgrade of Windows 7 home premium and I am thinking about trying to do a clean install since the start up time after the upgrade is brutal (about 10 minutes). My question: I know you can do a clean install using a custom install but do I have to re-install vista first or can I just boot up to my working Win 7 install, put the disk in and do a custom install?

Boot Menu Shows Vista After Clean Install
I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate onto my Vista Ultimate Boot Camp Partition (on my MacBook Pro), rather than an upgrade install. Windows 7 told me that it would move Vista to a folder called Windows.old or something like that. Fine. After everything was installed, I used Disk Cleanup to delete that folder, and the space was recovered on my partition But when booting into Windows 7, I get a boot menu that seems to indicate Vista is still there. So my question is, can I simply delete Entry 2? Or is there other remaining stuff from Vista still on my drive somewhere that I should also delete? What is the drive "Active Boot Partition"? I wish Windows 7 gave an option to do a clean install WITHOUT keeping the old system around...The whole point of doing the clean install was to get rid of all the accumulated junk and start fresh.

Upgrade Allows Clean Install ?
Can you fresh install with an Upgrade version of Windows 7? I want to save some money by buying the Upgrade. However, if I have to install my old OS first then upgrade, that isn't really a clean install. I'm wondering if you simply have to prove you have an older Windows version so that you can upgrade, or if it literally has to be on the PC for it to work. Second, does anyone know if the Upgrade trick works with Win 7? As in, you install the Upgrade without entering a key, then "upgrade" your upgrade?

What is the difference between Upgrade vs Clean Install ? Which one will be the best option ? The screen of my Toshiba laptop turns black every 1-2 minutes, and it stays like this for almost 30 seconds. Sometimes, it turns pure white screen and then I've to restart the system. Does anyone know why is it going this ?? Is there any solution for that ?

Ok, now that Windows 7 is out "officially" who do you guys think? I installed fine using Upgrade from Vista SP2 Ultimate. Everything worked fine without any new driver install. All my programs worked right away. I like the system, I like the speed. So I keep asking myself will it be better if I install again in a "clean install" way? What's your opinion, what's better? And what you did?

I have successfully upgraded my Vista machine to Windows 7 using a Windows 7 Upgrade installed from my Vista desktop. I chose to do a Clean install but I was hoping to have more clarification as to what this means exactly. 1) I assume that the Clean install did not reformat my hdd because it created a Windows.old folder with all of my personal files that were on the hdd. Is this correct that it was not reformatted? 2) If I want to install Windows 7 again and reformat my hdd is this possible with an Windows 7 Upgrade? 3) The windows install asked me to run updates to my Vista OS in order for the update to run properly. I chose to not run the updates because I was doing a "clean install" so it seemed counter intuitive to upgrade an OS that a clean install should be wiping from my hdd.

Clean Install To Win7, No Drivers Found
I've been searching for an our or so all over trying to find something that helps me with this problem, but nothing seems to be working. I have an HP dv6780se Pavillion Laptop. I put a new hard drive in it to restore and the restore disks are working correctly. It will install windows vista, but then when it starts installing all the bloatware the computer restarts and says OS not found. So, I figured I'd install windows 7 since I was planning on doing it anyway. My problem now is that I'm wondering since restore disks only install vista and don't finish the other hp stuff that the drivers aren't getting installed for vista...hence when I try and do a clean install of Windows 7 it says no drivers found. Any idea what I can do to get my install going?

Bootmanager Is Missing - Win7 Clean Install
I had winxp32 on a computer before, it crashed and didn't start again(bootmanager is missing). SO I decided to uppgrade to win7 and get rid of the problem. I used my other computer to install the win7 directly to the harddrive which I put back (clean succesful install) to the computer that crashed before. I still get the same message "bootmanager is missing"when I boot the computer from win7 dvd or hardrive. The file is definetly located on the dvd, and the dvd works fine on win7 64-bit. Bios recognizes both dvd-player and harddrive as it should. I tried to change the memorysticks but no effect. Help&ideas anyone?

Windows 7 Upgrade - Clean Install
The Windows 7 Full Versions are for those users who wish to install the OS on a blank (or newly purchased) formatted HD who has NEVER owned a license for XP or Vista. That is all it is meant for, black and white. The Windows 7 Upgrade Versions are for those users who already own a previous license for XP or Vista OS, and is based upon a trust system that you do, in-fact, OWN a valid license. In the future, Microsoft could eventually come out with a patch to validate your Upgraded version of Windows 7 by asking for the previous OS disk and/or key for validity. So do not toss away your old disks or key information. The recommended way to Upgrade to Windows 7, from XP or Vista, is to launch the DVD from within the current OS and follow the dialog boxes to install Windows 7. So basically, the Upgrade does NOT ask for a previous Windows disk, nor a previous license key, nor does it check online to make sure the key is even valid. If you are running a 32bit OS and upgrading to Windows 7 32bit, you can do the normal Upgrade method which will place your old OS into a folder that you can delete later. However, I would recommend re-booting the computer with the DVD in the drive to lauch the setup. Just make sure you have backed up your personal data elsewhere before doing so, preferably using Windows Easy Transfer at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/windows-easy-transfer Also, during the installation, Windows 7 puts a 100mb partition for system management, used by Windows 7 Ultimate, Business and Enterprise. Even if you are not installing those OS's, you will still get the partition... but it doesn't hurt anything, I would just leave it to be safe. It is assumed that it is there for the other OS's to load Windows 7. So, if you remove it, you could have issues down the road. Clean Install Using Upgrade Version
Having followed the numerous threads carefully, confusion occurs with CLEAN install.There is a subtle, but important difference between a CLEAN install that is done as part of an upgrade to XP and one that is RETAIL clean  install. An UPGRADE, run from within XP (whether that is OEM or Full retail) has to be checked that it is validated XP before the Win 7 installation will run. The Win 7 will then install by reformatting the disc/partition containing XP, ie.. it's a CLEAN install onto a re-formatted drive/partition. If you purchase a RETAIL version of Win 7, then that will do a CLEAN install by BOOTING from the CD/DVD, it will install on a PC that doesn't have ANY previous OS, so it clearly can't be run from within one. That's also a CLEAN install, but the 2 are very different.I was searching this issue because at our Computer Club we have 16 machines with all sorts of variations in OS's. We want to create Dual Boot with existing retail XP one one partition and retail Win 7 on another. My understanding is that procedure is perfectly possible.

i am planning to buy the upgrade version of Windows 7 (i have genuine vista) but im planning on buy it online from the microsoft store, i read the clean install from upgrade sticky but i noticed this; ' This will show you how to do a Clean Install using a retail Upgrade Windows 7 installation disc.' I notice the words 'retail' and 'disc' i am wondering if i download the official version is that considered retail? and im not really sure how it works, i have never downloaded an OS before, do i need to burn it to a disk once its downloaded? If so will it then work like the regular disk allowing me to do what the sticky then goes on to explain, or will it know its my home made 50cent disk and think my copy is fake?
