How To Upgrade To Win7 Home Premium Without Vista ?
I had a fully activated and legal copy of Windows Vista running on my computer 3 months ago. I formatted my disk to install Windows 7, thinking I will activate with the upgrade key I bought.
How do I upgrade now?
Please tell me there is way to do it from within Windows 7. I have installed all the programs I want and have it running exactly the way I want it.
Don't tell me I need to clean install Win 7 again?

I am trying to upgrade my Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit on my laptop to Windows 7 32bit Ultimate this is a valid upgrade I have seen it on the charts its an in-place upgrade. I am using the latest MSDN RTM Windows 7 32bit Ultimate DVD but yet it keeps saying i don't have enough temp space even though I have over 70GB which is well over the requirements all I can think is that the MSDN RTM is not final and does not have the upgrade feature in it for my version of windows anyone else had this problem? Error is "There is not enough free space to store temporary Windows installation files. Try using Disk Cleanup, uninstall old programs, or move files to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive."

I have Vista Home Premium and am trying to upgrade to windows 7 Ultimate. all the charts say this is possible. I originally bought Pro but i saw your chartys this and got Ultimate but when i attempt to upgrade...the screen says this isn't possible. i need to do a full install. I think this is not very good and if I want support I have to pay for it. What about the software I already got? Vista Business To Win7 Home Premium Upgrade
I am currently using Vista Business and want to install Windows 7 Home Premium. Upgrade Advisor does not show Home Premium as an upgrade but I don't need anything more than that and don't want to pay the full price for what is basically a downgrade. It doesn't make sense that I would have to pay for a full version of Home Premium when I already have a Vista Business version. Does anyone have an answer to this problem.

Currently I'm running Vista Home Premium but I ran across this information below: ....I'm assuming, according to this, that I can NOT upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro? Only 7 Premium and Ultimate. Is this actually correct? I can't imagine why I couldn't upgrade from Vista Premium to Windows 7 Pro. I don't particularly want to do a Win7 Pro clean install because of all my drivers. Wouldn't many of my current drivers have to be updated with a clean install? I installed a full version of Win 7 Home Premium, but discovered that my computer (Dell XPS 410) will not provide BIOS updates for Win 7. One apparent result is that several HDs are not recognizable or usable in Win 7. I would like to reinstall Windows Vista Home Premium (apparently the upgrade version) from its CD over the Win 7, at least until I can back up the inaccessible HDs. If possible, please send step-by-step instructions.

I ran the Upgrade Assistant DVD and then the Windows 7 upgrade option DVD, but now I get a compatibility message saying: "Please install the OS language pack to enable this functionality: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Language pack". When I go to the downloads center on the Microsoft website and click on the "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Language pack" it says that there isn't a download for the English version and go back to choose another language (which I don't need). Home Premium Upgrade From Vista Home Premium SP1
I have attempted to complete this upgrade and all seemed OK till I tried to start 7 - then the PC crashed and keep getting Windows Error Recovery message and the option of a Safe Start. Now cannot seem to get back to Vista or to re-load 7. In other words I'm in a loop. Tried to re-boot from both Vista and & CD but still get the Error message. Any wise guys able to suggest a way forward? Grateful for any contributions.

Cant Upgrade From Vista Home Premium To 7 Home Premium
I successfully bought the upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium N, downloaded and extracted it and now I want to install it. When I choose UPDATE in the intallation dialog it tells me that I cannot upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium ??? Every website from Windows and other people tells me that it IS possible and even the Windows 7 Update Advisor told me that I should not encounter any problems upgrading. Has anyone of you yet encountered upgrading problems of compatible Vista/7 versions? Or any other idea what I can do to solve the problem?! I know that I can make a clean intall of 7, but this would be a pain..

Upgrade FAILURE Vista Home Premium X64 To 7 Home Premium X64
looking for ideas on how to fix this problem. while installing 7 H.P. it gets to completing installation then freezes up after computer reboots a warning message appears stating windows 7 has failed to install and resume after reboot, and then the same warning message appears. I tried the roll back installation option and a message flashes on and off to quickly to read. and Vista will not come up to start over. any Ideas on what to Do?

It said it couldn't upgrade from my Vista Home Premium and had to do a custom install clean on top of Vista. I have not gone any farther than to see the installation finished and I see that it saved my Vista files in Windows.old. I sure thought Win & would upgrade from Vista. Now I have to reinstall all my apps again. And if I'm going to do that anyway I might just as well install the 64 bit version instead of the 32 bit I installed. Is this best? I have MS Office 2007 as well to reinstall. Does it work under 64 bit Win 7? Is this what others have seen?

Upgrade From Vista Home Premium Fails
I purchased a student edition of Windows 7 and downloaded it from the Microsoft website. I attempted to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7 last night, but received an error message just after the first time my computer rebooted during the installation (during the third phase, called 'Expanding Windows files' at approximately 21%). I checked the error log and found that the setup had failed to find a file. I attempted the installation this morning and it failed again at the same place, though this time the error log is empty. The compatibility advisor finds no problems with my computer upgrading to Windows 7. I'd appreciate any help you could give me. Edit: attempted installation a third time; it gave me the same error as last time. Dual Booting WIN7 And Vista Home Premium
I posted here earlier (a couple weeks ago) about a painless installation of Windows 7 on a resized C Drive, which I partitioned into into a C Drive (Vista) and W Drive (Win 7). All was fine until yesterday - I had been able to login into and out of both operating systems without drama - when out of the blue, for no apparent reason, whenever I try and log onto the Vista operating system, it allows me to logon as Rod with my correct password, but after the logon screen I get the "Preparing your Desktop" and and am presented with a Desktop and icons - but not for me! I get a bubble pop up out of the System Tray that says "Windows had trouble loading your Profile and has loaded up a temporary profile. Contact your administrator". That would be me! I for the life of me don't know what happened. I have created no new users, nor amended any existing ones. Though, when using Windows 7 earlier in the day, I had to give access rights and permissions to All authenticated Users in order to access and use files on a separate (D) Drive. Will this have screwed up my User Profile and login to Vista? How?

Upgrade From Vista Home Premium Stops After First Reboot
I'm trying to upgrade my Vista workstation to Windows 7 Ultimate. I ran the compatibility check and had no issues reported. The upgrade process starts with no problems, the windows files get copied and the system information is also gathered properly. After 21% of the file expansion is done, the box is rebooted by Windows. When is restarts, it stops when the Windows symbol is formed and it says Windows is starting. I cannot get passed that point. Rebooting into Vista is not a problem and the previous system gets restored. I tried booting from the installation DVD, but then after the initial file copy it stops before the Windows symbole is formed (four colored dots in a square). Two years ago I updated this machine from Windows XP to Vista.Anyone an idea how to fix this?

I have a valid install of Vista Home Premium, and would like to upgrade to Windows 7. I made the mistake of buying the Windows 7 Professional before I noticed this upgrade matrix: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-considerations.aspx So, apparently, in order for me to upgrade to what I have in my hands (Win 7 Pro), it'll be a doosey (at least for me). But, I found Paul Thurrott's clear instructions on how to do a clean install with an upgrade version of Win 7 (again, I have a valid install of Windows Vista). So here's my question : Can I perform a clean install with my upgrade package (via Paul's workaround), and keep all my files somehow by using partitions? That is, is there a way to do this install with partitioning instead of backing up everything externally and then restoring (my external drive is having issues)? More info on my internal drives : My computer has 2 physical hard drives. One contains drive C and D, and the other has E and F. Drive C of course has my Vista OS on it, and most of my programs. Drives D, E, and F have personal data files and some programs on them. Space available: -- Drive 1 C: 52 GB -- Drive 1 D: 365 GB -- Drive 2 E: 9 GB -- Drive 2 F: 10 GB I have relatively little experience upgrading O/S's and playing with partitions. One thought was that I might be able to create a partition on Drive 1, do a clean install of Win 7 Pro on it, and then work on migrating over personal files and programs from the existing partitions on that drive. Would this work? Is there a better solution?

I downloaded the 64bit release candidate yesterday and tried the upgrade from Vista Home Premium SP1 64bit. Everything checked out fine and the upgrade started... when the last stage is around 66% complete I get the message: Werfault.exe application error, the instruction at 0x76B93892 reference memory at 0x00000000, the memory could not be read. The installation program rolled back, which was very nice! I made a few changes and tried it another couple of times with the same result. My system has an Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard, AMD 9850 X4 cpu, 4GB memory, EVGA GTX 295, two Maxtor hard drives - 300GB and 500GB, 2 DVD drives, etc. Anyone have any suggestions other than a clean install? I had tried the Win 7 beta version with a clean install and that had installed but that was all I did with it.

I've been researching online that there is ONLY one way of going to from version to version when upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7. For example, Vista Home Premium to 7 Home Premium. You technically (In Microsoft's eyes) can't go from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional. People bought the $30 Student 7 Professional from DR when it was available, and had Vista Home Premium on their laptop. Mistake? I don't think so. We are also assuming that you have a legitimate copy of Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional Upgrade. We also assume no liability for any damages or data loss this may occur from doing my tutorial.. First off we need things done before we can do the upgrades. (Yes Upgrades). 1. Backup everything you need saved (Make an image with Acronis or any backup program) 2. Have a copy of Windows 7 (Any edition works, I'll tell you why later) 3. Have a quite some time to do this (Upgrades took a total of probably half a day) Assuming you did the first 3 steps continue.... So you have a DVD copy or image of Windows 7. Extract the image or copy the disc to a folder on the HD of the computer you are upgrading. We are going to be going from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium as this is the only way we can do it (THANKS MICROSOFT). View the extracted dvd/image on your HD. You will see a Sources folder, and you will see a ei.cfg. This can be edited with Wordpad or notepad, either one will do fine. Read more at the forum...

WIN7 / Vista Home Premium Dual Boot - TRASHING ONE
I have C Drive 250gb - Vista HP SP2 and, PARTIONED, also a W Drive 250gb - Windows 7 RC7100 Boot Manager list Windows 7 first, which is what I wanted and set via msconfig. I think I am going to trash my Vista and install a clean Windows 7 on C drive. I am thinking to do this: 1. From within Windows 7, go to msconfig and reset boot sequence to C Drive 2. Reboot. From within Vista, go to Disk Management and delete the W partition (and therefore Windows 7) and then to resize my C drive to full amount of C/W size (500GB) 3. From within Vista, load in Windows 7 DVD, go to My computer and set off setup.exe & do a clean install...or do I have to change boot sequence thru bios first and reboot to the DVD drive to do this? I have all discs/drivers for my other applications and they are all working fine on my present Windows 7 drive Or would I simply do an in-place upgrade? I know I have to either purchase a new copy or an upgrade copy of Windows 7. Is my thought process above correct?

Completed upgrade on first DELL Inspiron after several attemps and many hours.  Second DELL Inspiron 1705 Vista SP2 I have wasted many hours. When I insert the disk into the DVD there's activity which looks like a decompress.  There's no SETUP screen. After an hour the process completes but no SETUP screen.  If I try to access the DVD the process starts over. If I boot with the disk in the DVD the process starts again but the initialization of VISTA is delayed. The BIOS has been updated. I have uninstalled McAfee, PCTools, iTunes, QuickTime and Real Player. With all the problems recorded in this forum, I'm reluctant to proceed.  I do not want to be in the position wher I have to reinstall VISTA.

I have been able to full install Windows 7 to an empty hard drive but cannot upgrade from Vista Home Premium. Keeps saying I have to reboot to change some files and then try again. I do it over and over again with same results: Reboot and try again. Am getting nowhere, can you help?

I have a laptop with vista home premium 32 bit.. (OEM)..No install disk But can make one.I was going to install it on pc. I have ordered an upgrade disk for windows 7 x64 professional.. I was wanting to put it on my pc. It is running Windows 7600-16384 at the moment. From what I see it seems I won't be able to upgrade because: 1. Vista home premium to Windows professional won't work. 2. You can't upgrade with windows 7600-16384 to RTM 3. Not sure about going from 32 bit to 64 bit. I am correct in my thinking??? If so I may have to cancel my upgrade buy from Newegg..Or change it somehow. Would I be able to do clean install (RTM) on the pc with 7600-16384 on there????
