Very Slow To Open Files From Windows Explorer - Ok Within Application
Nov 28, 2011
Sometimes if I open a file by double clicking it in windows explorer, it will sit doing nothing (and that explorer window is then tied up) for a few minutes! Then the file opens normally in the correct application. But opening the application first, and getting it from the file open menu, or dragging the file into the open application is ok. The problem goes away if I reboot windows, but can come back again later for no apparent reason.

I believe Ive run into a bug with Windows Explorer, however, it could possibly be with Word 2010. If its not a bug, and can be fixed by your helping me, that would be wonderful! (I use Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit.) This is what does work just fine: From Word, I open a file, then open another file, then another. I am able to use the CTRL-F6 to move from document to document. This is what does not work: I open those same 3 files from Windows Explorer, by using the mouse to select them and hit ENTER. The files do open in Word. However, the CTRL-F6 keystroke does not work to be able to move from document to document. In the latter, its a little bit as if Windows Explorer is starting multiple copies of Word. However, from the Word icon on the taskbar, both cases look the same, i.e., when I hover over the icon, I can see the 3 miniature files, and can click into any of them. Id like to understand whats going on thats different in the 2 cases. But Id really love to learn of how I can make the latter case work. With my work, I do this process (open multiple files from Windows Explorer) dozens of times a day, and I need efficiency. It takes a lot longer to open each file one-by-one. It also takes longer to not be able to use CTRL-F6.

I installed a graphics software in XP mode. The software works normally but when I open a file of this software on my machine (PC1) The software crashes and the opening of the work done on this software is too slow, but if I get a job done but in the same software that is stored on another computer network software is not slow.
I did a test on another computer (PC2) and when I get work on the network (eg in the PC1), there is slow but when I open a saved work on the same computer (PC2) software is too slow. Does anybody know why this happens? I think it should be something related to XP mode, because it happens in 2 PCs

Why is there a huge delay on the sorting of files/folders in windows explorer?
If I enter a folder that has many subfolders and extra files, it seems to load everything at once in alphabetical order, then there's a delay while it sorts the folders and the individual files separately, also in alphabetical order. This delay can be something like 5 seconds with just a few hundred items, and it just grows from there.

I can no longer "Open With" (Program X) multiple files, as in the option doesn't even exist when you right-click a file. I noticed when I was clicking several jpgs to open in Photoshop, where my default viewer is Google's Picasa (for ease of viewing and convenience). The strange thing is that I can still "Open With" individual files. I thought maybe it was just a Photoshop goof but it applies to Mp3s/Winamp and AVIs as well. This is very inconvenient!

I am always manipulation files between several folders so I have several iterations of Windows Explorer open when my computer boots up and showing the contents of the folders that I manipulate all the time. Using XP files moved or copied into another folder always appeared at the bottom of the explorer window and that was good because although they were out of alphabetical order I always knew where to find the new files in the explorer window. They would stay at the bottom until I clicked 'Refresh' or changed the focus to another folder or shut down that explorer. Windows 7 explorer behaves differently and places new files in alphabetical order. Is there a way it can be changed so that new files show at the bottom of the explorer window?

How do I get Windows 7 Windows Explorer to Open multiple files (of same type) in the SAME application window, like it did in Windows XP?
PAST
WinXP > Windows Explorer > Highlight File (jpg) > Open > Application Launches > Open 2nd File > Opens in SAME application window. Now I can work with both files in the same application.
NOW
Win 7 > Windows Explorer > Highlight File (jpg) > Open > Application Launches > Open 2nd File > Opens in NEW application window. I then have 2,3,4,..of the same application running. I want to open and work with the files within the SAME single application window. (using windows explorer)(like I did with XP).
How do I tweak Win7?
What is the terminology or registry area for this technical change? (so I can search better without so many common words)
Which files-- Excel (xls), Microsoft Paint (jpg), Corel Photo-Paint (jpg) >> seems like all applications that can open multiple files. It definitely seems like a change to the O/S. Same apps worked fine in XP.
(I would accept a single tweak to get Corel Photo-Paint JPGs to all open in the same app window. I want to go to windows explorer, click on JPGs, and have them all open in 1 instance of Corel Photo-Paint, or any application associated with JPGs.)

I was fixing a laptop that was having several issues, (special keys wouldn't work properly, internet explorer would crash, PDF files wouldn't open, etc) and I found a suspicious file (C:User<user>AppDataRoamingElofenmoma.exe) that was booting on startup. Virustotal hit me with only 3 results for a trojan, which is actually quite low, but this file was clearly the problem, the details seemed to be in russian and it's Regedit entry was random letters.
So I cleaned all evidence of this file and now the keyboard works properly, but I'm still having problems with executable. Most of the times when I open a program nothing shows up, yet the process is running, after opening it 3 or 4 times one window finally opens, but there's still 3 or 4 idle processes before it with no window in sight. Some times when I force close the first process all the other windows suddenly show up. I also noticed that the processes for setups, chrome, internet explorer tend to stay idle even after closing them normally (in the program itself, manually closing the process works).Usually I would just format the PC, but this is a very complicated PC to format, the owner has tons of certificates that he needs and most of them he doesn't even remember how to reinstall them again.

What does it mean? Is it important to have

How can I define keyboard shortcuts for different open application windows. This is something I do in Linux and it helps a lot when I have many windows open. Example: I have Internet explorer open, I give it shortcut Ctrl+Shift+A Then for example VLC player is open, I give it a Ctrl+shift+B
Then I can just press these keys and go from one window to another. This makes a lot of sense when I have 40 windows open. Pressing Alt+tab is not as efficient as this.

I have read the Windows Mail tutorial but I have a problem.
I have used Take Ownership and removed Windows Live Mail 64 and installed Windows Mail 64 as per tutorial.
I have the shortcut on the desktop but when I try to open from there it says:-
Windows Mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the Windows Mail message store. Windows Mail was unable to locate its message database. If you’ve moved the database files to a new location, click okay to reset the database to that location.
I clicked okay and I now click on the hidden folder Widows Mail hoping that will do the trick, it doesn’t!
The next error message I get is:-
Windows Mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the Windows Mail message store.
The last error message I get is:-
Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialised.

Shortly after installing a theme (I can not remember as I can't get into the file system) which is as far as I can see a perfectly legitimate theme (recommended by a user from overclock.net) explorer.exe hasn't worked. I installed it, it asked me to restart explorer.exe by pressing the button. I got the error that it could not start. Itrecommended that I restart the computer before all changes take place. I assumed that I had to restart the computer for Explorer.EXE to work. It did not. At startup, the following happened and now does every time I start it up: (A note, sorry for the low quality photo's, I'm letting someone using my DSLR as they're on holidays.)Everything goes seemingly normal in the BIOS.FYI, the debug code on the motherboard is AA so all is fine according to the debug code.Just before Windows logs me in (just after the Windows logo at boot) there is a blacks screen displayed for a significant amount of time. As I have an SSD, it shouldn't be there and it shouldn't take that long.
Before I get to the desktop, the following errors come up:his is what the desktop looks at login. Firstly, there is not start menu - which means no explorer.exe. Secondly, why has this application started up? Nothing else seems to be able to but this application however manages to. Is it because it uses it's own UI? Nothing else seems to startup. Hmm.I press ctrl+alt+delete and the following comes up as usual: I click "start task manager" and the following error comes up then decided to start the computer up in safe mode.Same errors as before: This is what the desktop looks like, no start menu there:I press ctrl+alt+delete and the normal ctrl+alt+delete screen comes up. Same taskmanager error as earlier.I next boot into safe mode with command prompt. This time only this error comes up: (that is, unless I missed the explorer.exe error or I subconsciously clicked the ok button which is a possibility)

I have a very fast system with 16Gb Ram and SSD drives. However when I open a folder containing images, explorer takes ages creating the thumbnails. (Whether small/medium or large icons is selected). OK the first time, but why every subsequent time I open that folder?
If I scroll down, the thumbnails are only created when the next lot of files come into the window. If I am in Details mode, then some columns i.e. Date, take much longer to populate than others. It's as if my windows isn't caching or something?

Windows Explorer on my wife's computer (running W7 Home Premium and completely up to date with Windows Updates) takes 4 or 5 minutes to finish running right after a power-up boot. The hourglass icon seems to sit there forever, but the folders and files finally appear. Later, when running an Explorer-type function, such as saving a file in Word or opening a file in some other application, a long delay occurs again. Her computer hardware and software components are very similar to mine, and I never have this problem. She may have a few hundred more photo files than I have, but I can't identify any significant difference. During these long delays I've watched the Task Manager

Installed Windows 7 Professional, Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode so as to use Canon 20D EOS Viewing Utility in seamless mode on Windows 7 professional. (Basically, I need to view pics right as I take them with my camera and that program does it but is not compatible with Windows 7).
Installs seem to have went fine however when I go to Start- All Programs- Windows Virtual Pc- Windows XP Mode Applications- and then click on the application I need which is EOSViewerUtility1.1, a box opens that says "Windows XP Mode - Windows Virtual PC" and then a green bar running that says below it "starting virtual application". Finally a large blue screen box opens and has at the top the words "Windows XP Mode - Windows Virtual PC" and still says it's "starting virtual application." It never does finally open up the program but just has the green bar running at the top like it wants to open up.It seems to me the blue box is really the Windows XP Mode box as it looks like that. So it appears that the program app is not really opening up in Windows 7 but just the XP Mode box.

I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. Sometimes, I start my system and, when it's fully up, click on an app (eg Firefox, Outlook, Word, Excel etc) in the taskbar as normal but sometimes they don't start - the timer shows then, after 5-10 secs, it stops & the app fails to open. None of them will open until I reboot. This seems to suggest a Windows, rather than installed SW, problem. It's happened on and off for some months now so I can't pin it back to some change in the past. How to diagnose - where would I dig out error reports for these events, if at all?

I just wanted to share a fix I have for a problem I was experiencing with windows explorer. The problem is clicking on a directory with a bunch of files in it (that has been set to sort by date as default) is painfully slow , like 3 or 4 secs. If the directory is set to sort alphabetically then every thing is ok.after much pain I found the problem to be down to my anti-virus solution, I was using Panda cloud anti-virus. Once uninstalled the problem is removed. clicking on the same directory opens it instantaneously

Windows Explorer (not Internet explorer) just sits there for ages (several minutes) before actually displaying the contents of my computer. The structure on the left is all there but the right side where all the files should be is just blank with a swirly "processing" cursor. Strangly, if I go into an application and do file>open I can browse instantly around the computer in that browse window (while explorer is still sitting there like an idiot doing nothing)... In multiple browsers (IE/chrome) I'm getting a problem where some websites are working (confirming there internet connection is ok) and some are timing out. There seems to be no pattern as to which work and which don't and I've just noticed something that makes me think it's related to the first problem - I try to open website A but it keeps timing out. I try a couple of other websites, they work fine. I find another website (b) that doesn't work. Several minutes have passed since I tried website A so I try it again - it works! website b still doesn't work. I wait a few minutes and try again - it works! So in both cases it seems to be searching for something and not finding it, then it eventually finds it (or times out) and then it all works...

I recently installed Windows 7 on my wife's Samsung laptop (originally supplied with Vista) and generally the upgrade has been a great success. However, one constant complaint I get is that video files attached to emails are now very slow to open, whereas previously they had opened and played with no problem at all.
if so where should I look for an indication that I need to update.
