DELL Laptop M65 Cable Cable Unplugged

Aug 18, 2009

I have Windows 7 Pro (RTM) installed on a DELL Precision M65 laptop.

My LAN interface reports "Cable unplugged" although the cable is inserted and working.

I have no network connection through this interface.

the onboard NIC is a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit adapter and the driver reports it is working correctly.

If i try to install the latest driver from Broadcom, Windows says I already have the latest driver installed!

Any Suggestions?

"Your Computer Is Not Digital Cable Ready, You Will Not Be Able To Set It Up For Use With A Cable Card"

Apr 30, 2012

I have a new gaming computer with a high end video card and plenty of RAM and a high speed cable Internet connection. I also have a HDHomeRun TV cable unit which is listed to work with MS Media Center. When I set up my Media Center/TV connection it recognizes my HDHomeRun TV connection and all three TV channels via my MCard I got from Comcast cable. But next to the last dialog window, during setting up my TV connection, I got the following message, "Your computer is not digital cable ready. You will not be able to set it up for use with a cable card."

No Registered Application For This Extension

Jul 23, 2012

I had no problems with CNET but when I got this new PC every time the TechTraker says I have new updates, every time I try, it says "no registered application for this extension". This is using my normal browser Opera. When I copy and paste the address to Internet Explorer, no problem but why does it give me this problem and I would much prefer to do it on Opera.

Cannot Rename Files With Url Extension

Feb 14, 2012

I dragged a web address off and Windows created a shortcut. I was able to change the extension to .txt. The icon changed to that for a text file, and I could open the file and read it.

Since then, though, the url extension does not show up. If I select Rename and add .txt to the part of the filename showing, it evidently retains the url extension after the .txt extension because the icon doesn't change to the one for a text file, I'm not allowed to edit it, and selecting open results in it opening the web page - i.e., acting like it is still a .url file.

I have checked Tools -> View many times and the box for hiding common extensions is unchecked so that is not the problem.

Cannot Delete File Without Extension?

Jul 26, 2012

For a week or so now, I've been having this issue where I can't delete this file without an extension. It was supposed to be a .RAR file but something failed and it left this. Now when I try sending it to the recycle bin it says that this is not the valid location of the file. So now I don't know where it is. I tried using FileAssassin but it couldn't be deleted.

.lnk Extension And Shortcut Type File?

Aug 5, 2012

I have a document that has acquired a .lnk extension and shows a Shortcut type file and I cannot open.I was suggested to go to Sart > Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protrocol with a program > Set Assocations I did that and chose Word to open the document. The result was that almost all programs including IE and Systems Tool tried to open with Word.I had to run a System Restore from the Control Panel and all is fine now. However, can someone give me an idea how the document got the .lnk extension and Shortcut type? Also, is there a solution to this being that the above didn't work?I still cannot open the document and the program associated with .lnk reverted to unknown application.

Autoplay Popup For Extension HDD On Every Boot

Aug 19, 2012

Upon every boot I get a auto play popup for my ext hdd. All I see is stuff telling me to turn off all of the auto play for all devices. Either all or nothing it seems. The ext hdd isn't listed under devices in the auto play (where u can pick settings for individual devices) which I found out here : What would keep a device from appearing under "Devices" in AutoPlay?

If you have connected a volume device to your computer (for example, a USB flash drive or external hard drive), that device will not appear in the Devices section of AutoPlay. AutoPlay only lists non-volume devices (for example, some digital cameras, video cameras, and phones).

This is because these devices don't use a standard file system and AutoPlay cannot browse the contents of these devices to see what types of files they contain. So is there a clever or obvious way I'm not thinking of to disable auto play for a external hard drive that is constantly connected to the PC?

Moving To Different Bedroom In Annex/extension?

Aug 4, 2012

there is one problem, however, which is that the bedroom I will be moving into is part of the house extension. The biggest problem with this is that my gaming PC uses powerline adapters to connect from my BT HomeHub 3.0 router to my PC currently upstairs (in the bedroom I share with my brother) and the house electrics are all fine giving me full speeds. But when I tested the powerline adapter in the extension, I got no connection upstairs (in the new bedroom) and a very weak connection downstairs (in the annex). The annex's electrics are only really an extension of the main box although they are part of the same network but perhaps not a complete circuit... or something rather...WiFi signals do get to the annex bedroom ok although I'm not a fan of using WiFi and the signal quality received from a laptop's WiFi card is not fantastic.

-The BT HomeHub 3.0 can't be replaced with something else

-Drilling through walls is a rather unlikely to be approved by my parents

-Routing an ethernet cable through the house, although probably the best option, is also quite hard to achieve without making holes in things.

-There are no vents in either the room where the router is (attatched to master phone socket) or in the annex bedroom.

I have had a few ideas myself which range from getting an dual band high speed WiFi adapter to install into the PC to routing the cable outside, although the route I was thinking of would probably risk me breaking my neck and certain windows would have to be open all the time to fit the wire through. There are no vents in either the room where the router is (attatched to master phone socket) or in the annex bedroom.

What File Extension Has The Image Backup ?

Nov 5, 2009

I make use of the Windows 7 Backup and Restore programs.

Automatically everyday a backup is scheduled.
This backup is configured to contain all user files and a system image.

Now I have tried to find the system image, but I don't know what file extension the image backup should have.

In my backup folder, below, only two .VHD files are present, and a bunch of XML Documents.
X:\WindowsImageBackup\XXXX\Backup 2009-11-04 160010

Can someone explain me in which files the backup and restore programs save the backups?
Also I like to know where I should look for, to know for sure my backup is done successfully.

Preferred USB Extension For External Hard Drive?

Mar 1, 2012

I am looking to buy a Western Digital "Elements" 2TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive from Amazon. The place I want to sit the EHD will not reach my laptop with the provided USB cable, I will need a few more feet. This EHD comes with external power, but I'm not exactly sure if a regular USB extension will do the job 'safely'. I've been reading something about a "USB repeater", but I have no idea what that is or where I should find one. Also, is it a good idea to buy an EHD online? They are a little fragile while powered.. but while off, they should be safe no matter what happens to the package, right?
