Upon every boot I get a auto play popup for my ext hdd. All I see is stuff telling me to turn off all of the auto play for all devices. Either all or nothing it seems. The ext hdd isn't listed under devices in the auto play (where u can pick settings for individual devices) which I found out here : What would keep a device from appearing under "Devices" in AutoPlay?
If you have connected a volume device to your computer (for example, a USB flash drive or external hard drive), that device will not appear in the Devices section of AutoPlay. AutoPlay only lists non-volume devices (for example, some digital cameras, video cameras, and phones).
This is because these devices don't use a standard file system and AutoPlay cannot browse the contents of these devices to see what types of files they contain. So is there a clever or obvious way I'm not thinking of to disable auto play for a external hard drive that is constantly connected to the PC?
Somewhere along the way, the handler for Windows Media Player disappeared from the DVD Autoplay list. Is there a simple reg fix to put it back? I found one for Media Center, but not WMP.
A friend of mine installed VMware for me and since then autorun hasn't worked. Autoplay in general is fine, but it doesn't worked for DVD software (like games etc). I have changed the settings for 'software and games' in the autoplay settings, to no avail. I have also changed vmware settings to allow autorun. Still doesn't work. Some suggest changing NoDriveTypeAutoRun in the registries but I don't see it in the supposed place, only NoDrives. For further clarification, Autoplay works but I put, say, a game dvd it asks me if I want play it with Windows Media Player instead of proper autorun.
I am having problems with autoplay, it doesn't open when I insert a disc. I get a message that tells me that I don't have a program installed as default when opening a dvd, same with audio discs but I have media player. I can still explore and install programs and have found i can open DVDs with Power DVD but I would like to find out why DVDs and CDs just don't open. I have autoplay ticked in default autoplay settings and have attached the message I get when I try to open from my computer.
Yesterday I updated my and my wife's iPhones to 5.01 -- now that is a nightmare story in itself. I could never get it to work on my PC -- simply would not install the mobile device drivers no matter what I tried. I was able to update both phones on another Windows 7 PC we have. Now, when the original PC detects my iPhone and pops up autoplay it has the device name for my wife's phone. The phone itself shows that it is configured with the correct name.Where does Windows 7 pull the device name from? It has the wrong name in the device properties General tab but even though I can select the field and select the text in it I cannot change it.
Is there an easy way that I can configure my computer, so that each time I put a movie DVD into my drive that media center won't automatically fire up and try to plaback the movie.
I often rip movies from Netflix onto DVD+RW's and watch them later. However, when I put in the DVD+RW to erase it, I'm always dealing with Media Center starting up and trying to playback the movie. Obviously have same problem when I put in movie to rip, it wants to autoplay it, and I just want to use my dvd ripping tool of choice.
Why do some devices (mainly external disc drives) automatically open autoplay whilst some I have to open "my computer" and select "open autoplay. And some automatically start playing my selected autoplay option!
I have a fresh install of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate on my PC and there are times that when I reboot my computer or turn it on from an off state I get the Autoplay prompt for my External HDD. This occurrence is totally random and it doesn't happen sometimes. It just gets annoying that when you boot up you see that prompt and you have to close it every now and then.I have an Asus P8Z68-V motherboard.
i would like my autoplay settings to be un-change-able to anyone but myself. This means if an app is installed and tries to take control of an autoplay event, it gets an error code and the setting remains unchanged. If, however, I use the control panel to change a setting then it is allowed and the change goes through.
Is there a permission that can be added or removed from a registry key that controls autoplay settings for my user? (win 7 home premium x64)
Every time I stick a DVD (game/movie) into the drive it comes up with an autoplay box with 1 option, to open the folder to view files. In Explorer the DVD shows up just as a generic DVD - basically as if it were just a blank disc for burning. If I 'explore' the disc there are no playable files, just an empty folder and a notepad document. I can't play the DVD in WMP, or any other player and can't start a game from the disc. This happened once before after burning a CD, the system just wouldn't recognise DVDs. It sorted itself out pretty quickly last time, this time, again after burning a CD, I can't get it to work.
I've just put 4*USB extensions around the side of my room (concealed within cable magic) so I can use a wired mouse & keyboard at my desk rather than wireless. Will I notice any difference in gaming i.e. Lag in FPS games?
I have my usb 2.0 extension cable, and when i insert my usb flash drive or my printer, it don't works. And when i check device manager at computer managment it appears as a unknown device.
c\windows\system32\hkcmd.exe pops up after every login and says "make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again."How do I remove it. How specifically do I remove it in the registry or where?

I have just started using a new Windows 7 laptop. In Windows Live Mail Version 2011 (15.4.3538.513), when a new mail is downloaded from the IMAP server, there is no sound or popup notification. I think that all necessary sound / notification settings are properly checked in Windows Live Mail > Mail > Options. My sound is ok. I even get a windows default sound, when some error is notified in Windows Live Mail. I have been using OE (under XP) and WinMail (under Vista), and this problem does not happen there.
I have a new eMachines running Windows 7. On each startup a popup appears asking if WkUFind.exe should make changes to the computer. either newly installed 3rd party software or Microsoft Picture It program. I don't believe Picture It is installed.
I've found WkUFind in a Program Files folder. Trying to eliminate this pop.
I've just reinstalled my Windows 7 (purely for speed), but while my previous installation of Real Player had no problem downloading live streams for recording, I'm stuck this time around to figure out how to get past a new error msg.I go to File/Open & put in the stream name - this particular one is shown in the msg below. When I try to connect I immediately get a popup box with this msgI've tried it with 3 different versions of Real Player but get the identical msg every time,s not necessarily the Player's settings.I have a Belkin Play router & am using Microsoft SE as my antivirus program and use both Firefox & IE9 as browsers.I've no understanding of UDP/TCP & ports etc & really don't want to start meddling with them until I know that's what I really have to do, & also get specific instructions etc.
My job involves juggling six different pieces of internal software and attention to detail. It's easy to forget that I need to check my email for customer messages each half hour (or thereabouts). The company wants me to use gmail so I can't configure incoming messages to make a sound. Even if I could, it would be better just to do a scheduled check.
Cnet has a ton of reminders and clocks; too many to sort through. Anyone have a suggestion for something that will make a simple sound and pop up a message box on top of whatever I'm doing? I use Windows 7 Professional 64bit
Ok, there is a program that I use a lot, and I am wondering if it is possible to turn off that annoying UAC popup window that comes up every time I open it.
I had no problems with CNET but when I got this new PC every time the TechTraker says I have new updates, every time I try, it says "no registered application for this extension". This is using my normal browser Opera. When I copy and paste the address to Internet Explorer, no problem but why does it give me this problem and I would much prefer to do it on Opera.
this function (sort by file Extension) didn't add to windows 7 , So when I use xp I used small free tool called cpext but when I try to add it with windows 7 nothing happen So I need this tool or any alternative do the same job (add option to sort by extension)
I need to associate .BOM with OrCad. When I choose Associate a file type or protocol with a Program from Default Programs, I get a list of extensions and programs. However .bom does not appear in the list and OrCad does not either. How do I do the association?
I was trying to open a .lnk file and when I when to open it I clicked open in PDF file format. All my icons on my desktop turned into PDF files and I couldn't even open Firefox or Yahoo communicator because it was in the wrong format. I tried to follow some help and download and merge the .reg fix. I have tried different things and restarted my PC many times. All the icons look like the .reg building blocks now and I can not restore the icons like before.
I dragged a web address off and Windows created a shortcut. I was able to change the extension to .txt. The icon changed to that for a text file, and I could open the file and read it.
Since then, though, the url extension does not show up. If I select Rename and add .txt to the part of the filename showing, it evidently retains the url extension after the .txt extension because the icon doesn't change to the one for a text file, I'm not allowed to edit it, and selecting open results in it opening the web page - i.e., acting like it is still a .url file.
I have checked Tools -> View many times and the box for hiding common extensions is unchecked so that is not the problem.
For a week or so now, I've been having this issue where I can't delete this file without an extension. It was supposed to be a .RAR file but something failed and it left this. Now when I try sending it to the recycle bin it says that this is not the valid location of the file. So now I don't know where it is. I tried using FileAssassin but it couldn't be deleted.
