Upgrading An ASUS Netbook To Win7
Dec 8, 2009
I received an interesting challenge from my Boss today. She gave me her daughter's netbook which is an ASUS (I think it is the first or close to first ever made) and is extremely limited in specs...check this out
Celeron M Processor (900MHZ...)
1GB RAM(667MHZ I think...)
8GB SSD(It might be an SSD but 8GB and it happens to be in an IDE-only configuration...)
Intel 915 Int-GPU (Intel GPU, enough said...)
That is the relevant specs...I am wondering if installing Windows 7 will be possible
Ultimate?...NO NO NO
Professional?...NO NO
Home Premium?...NO
Home Basic...Maybe...
I have also heard reports that you can't activate Home Basic in the US. Before someone says to slap XP on it and let it go...her daughter despises XP and loves Windows 7 which led my boss to get me to attempt to install 7 on it. I think the biggest limiting factor here is HD space but I think Home Basic could fit on it..

I'm looking at upgrading my Acer Aspire One D255. I've watched a few tutorials on how to remove the old HDD and install the new SSD... This doesn't seem to be to much of a problem. But the problem I'm having is working out how to make a "copy" of Windows 7 off my HDD on to my flash drive then reinstall it onto my new SSD.

Bought my partner the Asus 1005HA for Xmas, and it runs pretty well. May upgrade ram, but it works.
The only minor issue I have experienced is that the small magnifying glass that should come up on the second entry when searching in start menu (the one that says 'see more results' after the initial search in the 'search programs' box) is a blank box with no icon. Small change... but rather than rebuild all icons for this small issue is there another way around it? She can live with it... but I would like the magnifying glass there.

I've been told that it is possible to maintain all ones applications and settings when upgrading from XP to windows 7, if you first upgrade XP to Vista and then the Vista to Windows 7. Can anyone verify that? It would be more time consuming but given the amount of apps I have installed and need, it is the best choice in my view. I have an old Vista disc somewhere so there is no extra expense.
Anyone done this before? or heard of it working?

My netbook froze on friday night. Try to restart, but was stuck at grey screen. It has asus logo and eee pc written. The options f2 to run setup and tab to display bios post yields nothing. In other words, pressing either button doesn't work. I have removed the battery, pressed the power button without the power cord, put everything back in, tapping f2. So far, no progress. Few times, i try pressing f2 similtaneously as i hit the power button, i got american megatrends screens. Still, none go further. I have this netbook for a little over a year. The warranty just expired a month ago. It is running window 7 starter already installed when i got it at bestbuy. I had contacted asus support, and tried some i mentioned above. I prefer to do this by myself.

I just upgraded a 32 bit windows vista Sony Vaio to 64 bit windows 7, but all the shortcuts and original programs (accessories, dvd writers, etc.) installed by Sony are gone. Would like to know how to get these programs back. I had try to use the disc that came with the computer but it actually wipe out windows 7 and reinstall windows vista back onto the computer.

Running the Microsoft Windows 7 advisor; it says that the laptop is OK for upgrade and I have to uninstall the ASUS Security Protect Manager (ASPM) prior to upgrade.
Looking for more information in the WWW, I found different opinions of people that did it and others said that it doesn't support.
Now I am confused whether to continue or not.
Does U6S support the Windows 7 upgrade?
If no, when will it support?
If yes, what is the proper replacement to the ASPM.

I have been working on this for about 5 hours now, searching many forums, downloading drivers, changing Bios settings, etc... but nothing is working. I realize there is a compatibility issue with KV8 and Win7 but a guy at Asus said it might be able to be fixed with certain drivers. I have been fooling around with VIA and Fasttrak 378.
My hard drive is working fine as I am using it right now, but when I get to the Win7 installation to choose where to save it, it does not detect a hard drive. This happened when I tried to install XP pro 64 a while ago as well. How can I make it appear? My system is:
ABS built
Asus K8V SE Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
2gb G.Skill Ram
160gb Maxtor SATA hd
I guess I'm confused as to why my hard drive is even RAID configured being that there is only 1.

I have purchased and downloaded both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows7 Professional (no CDs or media here only download version)
I sucessfully upgraded from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32
Then I upgraded my hard disk (140Gb 500GB) and RAM (3GB to to 4GB)
Now I would like to go from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit
When I try and run the Windows 7-P-retail-en-us.x64.exe file it upacks the box then stops with this error:"We are unable to create or save files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write flies and that that folder is not read only".
I am the System Admin and I have full rights, and have moved the exe and the setup box files to My Documentsand I have modified the directory properties/attributes but I still get the same error over and over.
I searched the posts and some people stated one needs a clean install others say you can upgrade from any version so I am trying the upgrade here especially since the upgrade from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32 was smooth and did require all the extra work of a reinstall.

I purchased the Win 7 Pro Upgrade 32bit via digitalriver, but I've been doing some reseach and probably should have selected the 64bit version.
- Any ideas how I can get the 64bit version?
- For those who ordered the 32bit back-up disc kit for the extra $15 and have received it, does it come with both 32bit & 64bit?
- I've already installed and activated the 32bit version, but when I go to install the 64bit version, will I need to / is there a way to deactivate my initial 32bit install or will this not matter?

I'm currently running 32-bit Windows 7 (Professional, full version) on my laptop, and want to use this machine to create a bootable USB drive with 64-bit Windows 7 (also Professional, full version). I tried going through the steps that are available on various tutorials online, but I'm always tripped up while attempting to use bootsect to make the drive bootable; basically I get an error saying that I need to be using a 64-bit OS.
I don't have convenient access to a computer with 64-bit Windows Vista/7 (I work at an academic institution where all pubic computers have XP or Linux), so I'm wondering if there's any way to get around this and create a bootable USB for 64-bit Windows 7 via a 32-bit OS.

I don't want anything too crazy, just something I can take with me on my IT jobs...
I've narrowed it down to these two...
AMD - Asus X5 Laptop - Laptops at Ebuyer
and
Intel - Asus X5DIJ Laptop - Laptops at Ebuyer
The main differences from what I can see is. The Intel has the extra gig of RAM but the AMD has the better graphics chip.
I do not know how the CPU's compare.
I would be ever so grateful for some good advice.

I was recently reading a tech magazine which I borrowed from my school's library earlier today. While checking this magazine, I found ( at the 82nd page ) a review about about JoliCloud (or Joli OS), which is an operating system optimized for small notebooks and netbooks. At first look, it seemed a good OS, so I decided to look for it on the web, and read some users opinions about it , ect.Unfortunately, I didn't find any review about it at Cnet, but nevermind. After about an hour of surfing, I've found a bunch of operating systems that are optimized and run smoothly on netbooks, rather than Windows 7 , perhaps.I got confused, so I came here to ask for help to choose the best operating system to run it next to windows 7, for some reason. My prefered way to run it, is on a virtual machine, but please tell me if running it by another way is still better and easier.Well, to help me (more) finding an OS that fits my needs:
1) Free, absolutely free please!
2) Power saver, just to keep more battery life.
3) Customizable, I like to give my special touch to the OS interface and apparence, just to be happy with it !
4) Good for web surfing, and mini games, because that's what I usually use my netbook for.
Characters in bold are more important, if the other recommendations are not available, it's ok.I have a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU (2CPUs) and an up to 900MB of RAM. (HP mini 311-1000CA)I am currently running windows 7.

My girlfriend, a student planning on taking advantage of the student deal going on right now, is going to be getting a new netbook. Unfortunately, Windows 7 Starter is sort of lacking in some features and she wants to upgrade.
Since they're both $30, what it comes down to is this:
Should she get Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Pro? It's going to be on a netbook, so I'm thinking HP is the way to go, but if Pro doesn't require any additional resources, it might work as well.
Also, this will sound very noob-tastic, but: Would it be easier on the netbook to install the 32-bit version of the OS, or does it not matter (32 vs 64 in terms of system resources)?

i recently ordered the lenovo ideaPad netbook s10 and should be getting it soon, it comes with xp, so i purchased a windows 7 upgrade from win741. for $32.00. they link you to a download .iso and .exe. i downloaded both files and have a product key.
so the question is how should i go about upgrading? do i just copy the .exe file on my desktop? i take it that the .iso needs to be burned to disk and installed by disk drive, but not available with my netbook.

i got a new netbook from hp (hence no dvd rom drive), it came with windows 7 starter, i want to get ultimate or home premium the digital version, my questions are:
1. once i install either upgrade, how do i restore to out-of-the-box state incase it screws up in the future?
2. many "installing windows 7 to a netbook" videos show disk part on usb drives and putting it on a usb and booting into it, can i go with "custom" installation from windows and reach a successful finish without booting into setup from bios?
heres my favorite video to show what im referring to:
