Upgraded From XP32 To Windows 7 Pro 64bit, Can Delete Old Windows Files?

Feb 10, 2010

I bought the upgrade Windows 7 Professional and did a custom install over my 32bit windows XP. The instalation/upgrade was perfectly successful. No problems there. I just have a question about the file called WindowsOld that was created when I did the custom instalation. It contains all the old files from XP (none of which I need) and its taking up a lot of space on my hard drive. May I delete this file without messing up windows 7, or are these old windows files necessary to run windows 7? I'd like to get rid of it and I'm afrade of messing things up.

Windows 7 64bit Randomly Freezing - Upgraded From XP 32bit

Jun 18, 2011

I've recently upgraded to Windows 7 64bit, from XP 32bit, and since then have been experiancing completely random freezes, like, computer freezes completely, the last half a second of any sound playing repeats, and the PC requires reset, also, I've noticed sometimes when listening to music, the music will pause for only a second, then continue, which is strange. Now these freezes, and hangs, are completely random, I've had it happen 5 minutes after start up, and sometimes it wont happen for 3-4 days. I installed brand new ram along with the upgrade G-Skill F2-6400CL5-2GBNT DDR2 (2Gx2) in the correct DIMM slots Yellow and Yellow. Ran Memtest86+ for 10 hours, no problems and cleared CMOS.

Upgraded From Vista To Windows 7 - Files Are Gone?

Oct 1, 2010

I've installed the Windows 7 upgrade from Vista onto my C drive - I was careful about making sure I didn't do a custom installation because I wanted to keep my files and programs. After the installation - my programs are still installed, the file folders are still there, but the folders on my D drive are empty. My music, photo, video, and document libraries are completely emptyOther threads have said to look in the Windows.old folder but there is no Windows.old folder on my computer. I had a few folders with documents on the desktop that are intact - so why would it delete some files but not others?

Change Drive Letter For Upgraded HDD On SSD-OS/HDD-User Files Setup?

Nov 3, 2011

I recently set up a new Systemax SYX-1113 PC with a SSD (C:) for Win 7 Pro and a 1TB HDD (G:) for my user libraries and programs. I need to upgrade the HDD from a 1GB to a 2 GB drive so I cloned the 1TB (G:) drive to a new 2TB (H:) drive. My new challenge is figuring out how to switch the drive letters on the two HDDs so that Windows looks to the new drive for the user directories and program files. I tried using disk manager in Windows 7 and got the BSOD - I guess it didn't like me changing the location of the active user profile. I assume I need to boot the PC from something other than the C: drive to make the change.

Delete Old Windows Backup Files?

Sep 9, 2011

I had windows 7 keep giving me a blue screen more often than not. I decided to reinstall windows. All went well and I don't get any blue screens. Now most of my 500g drive is 2 files (windows.old and windows.old.000). Now I don't have any room to backup my computer. These 2 files take up about 300g. I went to my local computer store and they this is normal for windows 7 and the files just keep getting bigger as time goes on. They advised me that I should have at least 2T drive to keep running windows 7. So my question is, can I delete the old backup files because I'm only using less than 200g on an ongoing bases. My operating system tells me that I don't have backup setup and I don't have room to set it up. I would have just over 300g free if I could delete these 2 files.

Windows 7 Can't Rename / Delete / Move Mkv Files

My computer has been acting a little weird lately. Recently i've downloaded some .mkv files and now i can't rename or delete or move them. I tried using command prompt and unlocker and it's still not working. It says "action can't be completed because it is being opened by other programme", i don't get this as i close all programmes and it still says the same thing.

My main purpose is to actually move them into another folder. It's only these few days that my computer is acting like this. I can move/delete/rename other avi or mp4 files.

Cannot Delete Files From Old Hard Drive With Windows Installation

Oct 7, 2011

While looking for solutions I seemed to come very close to finding someone with my exact problem, but not quite. Here goes:

I had a hard drive with Windows 7 installed. Everything worked, etc. Got a new hard drive, and installed 7 on there as well without making changed to the old hard drive (prompts displayed during new installation saying "old" windows files would be saved). I've been using it for a while now, however I want to use the old hard drive strictly for storage, so I tried to format it to clear the space out. I got the notice "Windows cannot complete format." Went to the forums and looked thru several suggestions, which brought me to try deleting the files individually.

Included in all this were attempts to give myself (the only user on the computer) full control of all files (which was already the case), to take ownership (via right click options AND command prompt "takeown" and "cacls"), to change permissions/ownership via "properties" for the drive/folders, command prompts to remove the "active" status of the old hard drive, as well as removing "boot" status from old drive (while making sure the new drive had "boot" status), tried everything I can think of using Disk Management AND the DiskPart utility, as well as countless other suggestions that I can barely remember. I'm still getting the "You need permission to perform this action." What I don't get is, if I'm THE administrator (and the only user), how do I not have access to this?

I'm sure there are some details I'm leaving out, but I've been at it for hours. Let me know if there's something you need to know. Running Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit, 4GB RAM, 3.2 Ghz AMD Athlon II.

Windows 7 Installed - Cannot Delete Files Or Change Ownership

Oct 24, 2012

I just installed Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit on two machines, and then Firefox 16.0.1 on each. Trying to replace the password files in my new profile, I found that many of these folders and files (in UsermeAppDataRoamingMozilla) cannot be deleted, nor can their ownership be changed. They belong to me already, and I'm an administrator with Full Control.

I've tried 72 tricks, including Emco UnLockIt 3.0.3, Unlocker 1.9.1, Take Ownership registry keys, takeown (from the command line), etc. Nothing works. I can't move them, delete them or anything. Nor can Mozbackup create a backup profile (it can't write the backup). Why does Firefox create these weird locked files and folders? Why doesn't Windows 7 allow me to take control of them?

Delete Locked System Files From Old Windows Install

Jan 21, 2012

I have recently updated my hdd with a clean windows 7 install, but had the old one on a secondary hard disk as a back up. I now need to delete these files to save space on my data drive, but am unable to delete the system and windows files as they are owned by TrustedInstaller.

I discovered how to take ownership of these directories, but now the UAC is telling me that I need permission from myself to delete the files which I own!

Is there anyway to get round this without shipping out my data and doing a format, which I don't want to do as I always seem to miss something important..

Windows 7 Cannot Run Any Programs Or Exe Files Apart From IE 64Bit?

Jan 6, 2011

Got a New Windows 7 machine about two months ago. Recently discovered about a week ago that the only thing that will actually run is Internet Explorer 64 Bit. Ive bootedd into Safe Mode (with Networking and Non Networking options) and had the same results.I dont think I have a virus but as I cannot run any programs I cannot check. I think that this is some sort of Windows Error. Ive tried to use the In Built 'Startup Repair' and also the 'Memory Diagnostic' Tools, which have returned no errors. Also Ive tried, certain exex file registry fixes which are out there, and these dont work. I have some Excel files on my desktop which which I click them I get the following Error 'There was a problem sending the command to the program'I have not got any restore points which go back far enough before this issue. Also do not have the CD.

Can't Open .exe Files In Windows 7 64bit

Mar 20, 2011

Everything was running fine, and all of a sudden I can not open .exe files unless i run them as an administrator. When I try to run them, the cursor does its 'loading' thing and then nothing open on the screen. I check processes under task manager and the program is open, but is not on my taskbar, or open anywhere on my screen. This is happening to about 90% of my programs. This is the second time I have had this problem. I had it before, and I did a clean re-install of windows 7 64-bit, and it happened again.I have tried multiple fixes, and nothing has worked so far. The driver for my Asus Xonar D2X sound card is what looks to be the culprit. I have no idea why and now I have to find a way to install the driver so I can use my card without this happening again.
