I want to know if there is a way to manually delete the index.dat files completely off my computer in Windows 7. If not, is there a utility that you would recommend that is safe and effective to use? Although I can get around on my computer just fine, I am in no way an advanced user.

So I want to change to backup my system to an external hard drive. Now even I did delete all backup files in E: drive. But looks like that 160 gb system image still in my E: drive. Because when I check my E: drive properties I still missing 160 gb space so I think that system image still in there somewhere. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a newer system with Windows 7 64-bit running. I manage many other machines and really have never had to think about the indexing service. It always seems to work decently although it has its faults.However, this is my personal machine and want it to work somewhat as it should and there's something way out of whack here. I built this system online and it has performed flawlessly. Not a glitch - except the indexing part of it.My hardware:1. Gigabyte H67A-UD3H-B32. 8 GB Memory3. Crucial Model 300 SSD4. WS 500GB Black Caviar HD5. 2 Dell Monitors6. Plain vanilla networking w/built in ethernet7. HP DVD R/W DriveI have configured what I want indexed and what I don't but not much of a change from Microsoft defaults. Services.msc reports that the indexing service and Windows Search servie status is "started" with "automatic" startup type.
The problem is no matter what I do my index only contains about 4,000 files. I have much smaller system that have over 800,000 files indexed and there's many more files on this machine. I've tried rebuilding the index many times, uninstalled and reinstalled the Index and serch services. Changed the registry to run indexing at full speed and left the machine on full power overnight and STILL always get around 3,000 to 4,000 files indexed. I have searched via the start menu and while in a folder using Windows Explorer. I check to make ABSOLUTELY sure I have the folder in the list of Indexed folders (control panel->Indexing Servce) and yet a search doesn't come back with ANY files. Occasionally, while searching in the Windows Explorer search box I'll get a message that I should add C: to my search list but it's already there. Obviously a few of the folders on the C: drive are in the exclude list but most are not.I know I haven't given much to go on here but I'm hoping someone will see something in my description that will spark an idea to go with that I haven't already tried. I wish I could give you a really comprehensive list of what I've done but I've been playing with this on and off for the last several months.
I have 64 bit windows 7. I deleted dungeon siege 2 using the control panel, remove program. It was removed except for one file in Program files x86/microsoftgames/dungeonSiege2. I tried manually deleting it but get this "the action can't be completed because the folder or file in it is open in another program. Close folder or file or retry" There is nothing open. I clicked properties of the file and security and clicked administrator and get the same message. Never had this problem removing remnants of programs in xp.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had windows 7 keep giving me a blue screen more often than not. I decided to reinstall windows. All went well and I don't get any blue screens. Now most of my 500g drive is 2 files (windows.old and windows.old.000). Now I don't have any room to backup my computer. These 2 files take up about 300g. I went to my local computer store and they this is normal for windows 7 and the files just keep getting bigger as time goes on. They advised me that I should have at least 2T drive to keep running windows 7. So my question is, can I delete the old backup files because I'm only using less than 200g on an ongoing bases. My operating system tells me that I don't have backup setup and I don't have room to set it up. I would have just over 300g free if I could delete these 2 files.

I tried using command prompt and unlocker and it's still not working. It says "action can't be completed because it is being opened by other programme", i don't get this as i close all programmes and it still says the same thing.
My main purpose is to actually move them into another folder. It's only these few days that my computer is acting like this. I can move/delete/rename other avi or mp4 files.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhile looking for solutions I seemed to come very close to finding someone with my exact problem, but not quite. Here goes:
I had a hard drive with Windows 7 installed. Everything worked, etc. Got a new hard drive, and installed 7 on there as well without making changed to the old hard drive (prompts displayed during new installation saying "old" windows files would be saved). I've been using it for a while now, however I want to use the old hard drive strictly for storage, so I tried to format it to clear the space out. I got the notice "Windows cannot complete format." Went to the forums and looked thru several suggestions, which brought me to try deleting the files individually.
Included in all this were attempts to give myself (the only user on the computer) full control of all files (which was already the case), to take ownership (via right click options AND command prompt "takeown" and "cacls"), to change permissions/ownership via "properties" for the drive/folders, command prompts to remove the "active" status of the old hard drive, as well as removing "boot" status from old drive (while making sure the new drive had "boot" status), tried everything I can think of using Disk Management AND the DiskPart utility, as well as countless other suggestions that I can barely remember. I'm still getting the "You need permission to perform this action." What I don't get is, if I'm THE administrator (and the only user), how do I not have access to this?
I'm sure there are some details I'm leaving out, but I've been at it for hours. Let me know if there's something you need to know. Running Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit, 4GB RAM, 3.2 Ghz AMD Athlon II.
I just installed Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit on two machines, and then Firefox 16.0.1 on each. Trying to replace the password files in my new profile, I found that many of these folders and files (in UsermeAppDataRoamingMozilla) cannot be deleted, nor can their ownership be changed. They belong to me already, and I'm an administrator with Full Control.
I've tried 72 tricks, including Emco UnLockIt 3.0.3, Unlocker 1.9.1, Take Ownership registry keys, takeown (from the command line), etc. Nothing works. I can't move them, delete them or anything. Nor can Mozbackup create a backup profile (it can't write the backup). Why does Firefox create these weird locked files and folders? Why doesn't Windows 7 allow me to take control of them?
So basically whenever I search a word on Windows Start Search bar, all my emails that associate with that word show up as a file, many that are supposed to be deemed private and confidential to me...... I discovered how to take ownership of these directories, but now the UAC is telling me that I need permission from myself to delete the files which I own!

I'm told that the file is open somewhere else but I don't understand where. How do I delete it?
Just about every time I try to permanently delete a large file or folder, either by shift/delete or emptying the recycle bin the operation hangs up.The little window opens and it counts up the size of the file and that it. Nothing else overtly happens. The status bar never starts indicating and the window just sits there with the little green lights chasing each other across it. If I try to cancel or close the window it nothing happens.During the time all this is going on, I can hit ctrl/alt/del and select Task Manager and it simply goes back to the desktop with this window still squatting there doing it's thing. I have pinned TM to the task bar and tried starting it from there but it never starts. Eventually everything just slows to a stop and nothing works which would seem to indicate some kind of memory leak. There are no error messages during any of this.I have to hit reset and restart the computer that way in order to regain control and we all know how bad an idea this is. I've already had my boot sector eaten once causing me to have to do a total rebuild and I'd prefer not to have to do it again.

I'm trying to clean up an external drive by deleting various files (using Windows Explorer) but like every file gives me "an unexpected error is keeping you from deleting the file error 0x80070570".
