As you can see from the screenshot on imgur, a device recently began to appear in my network. I assume the device named Jennings-PC is a wifi enabled device that is being detected by some node om my network. Any one else experiecned similar issues or know how to prevent it from appearing? My network is secured using WPA2, the device is not associated with the router in any way. [URL]

I have installed Windows 7 RC on 3 computers and setup the network as a home network, skipped creating "home-group" I have 2 XP systems on same network that I need to access. Anyway, I cant seem to figure out why/what this unknown device in my network map is? It shows up on all the computers that have the RC installed. I have attached a pic of this.
Any ideas?

same setup when BETA was installed and didnt have this issue. No 3rd party firewall or network software is installed.
I am running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate on my desktop (home) and Windows 7 x64 Pro on my laptops. I bring my personal laptop to work which I use for emails and browsing. There is sensitive information that I would not like to share for obvious reasons. I am running into a problem making sure the information is not in "shared" mode while at work.
Work has their own network, which I am unable to connect to because the Sys Admin is lazy and will won't provide me a VPN connection directly to the system. So what I have done is use the public WiFi that we make available to our customers and connect through my own VPN off the public WiFi system. I want to make sure that I am not inadvertently sharing documents or other information doing so. When I connect to the network at work I use the "Public" setting.
What makes it more difficult is I have a similar situation at home, in which we have one internet connection through a router coming in and several people use the system. The location of the router is actually upstairs where I do not have access to, I use a Netgear WNR2000 v2 (I rent out rooms in my house), so I am forced to connect to the router wireless.
I personally am not a gamer, but one of the tenants is. I almost always use my VPN service at home to connect, but I am unsure if this is the correct set-up. I don't want to share my printers, video, etc. with everyone in the house. I am using Norton 360 for protection with Firewalls and Anti-virus software. I connect through Golden Frog VPN service for security.
I am going to connect my desktop Gigabit switch with my devices but again want my system secure, but not limited because of my situation. It is safe using the router for access and then creating this "sub-network" for my devices (for the router I am the admin)? Is there a better method or suggestion that one might have. I would really appreciate the input for this complicated matter. Should I change my workgroup for home and work? Currently its the default WORKGROUP domain for both.
I setup WPA2 on my router and everyone can connect just fine. But a new laptop with Windows 7 that used to be able to connect before I set WPA2 can no longer connect. It takes a few minutes connecting saying "Identifying" then ends up saying it's connected with "Unidentified network". Can't ping the router, can't get to the internet etc. I've tried rebooting both the laptop and router, network diagnostic (which just tells me to reboot the router) etc and nothing works.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI 'm trying to connect my netbook to my wireless home network but it won't recognise the security key. I have Windows 7 32 bit installed. I have successfully connected it to my sister's network which is WPA2 protected, but when I try to connect to my own d-link dsl 2680 router, it keeps telling me that the security key or passphrase is incorrect even though I am typing in exactly the right password. My router is also WPA2 protected but for some reason the netbook fails to connect. My other laptop and my PC have no problem connecting at all though. It's just the netbook that seems to be the problem. It will however connect with a cable and also if I change the router's security setting to WEP. However I don't really want to leave it as WEP as this is less secure than WPA2. I've tried changing the SSID and password but it still won't connect. Before I installed Windows 7 I had XP running on the netbook and then it connected no problem. I don't know why I can connect to my sister's network but not my own.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIf I update the BIOS on my Intel motherboard to any one of the three most recent BIOS's, my add-in Intel network card (located in one of the pci slots) shows up as a removable device in the taskbar (Much like a USB device; for example a passport removable hard drive or flash drive). However, the motherboard's network controller does not exhibit this behavior.
Intel support is telling me that it can vary as to how the devices are detected by Windows and that this is normal. I have never ever seen a pci slot card being detected as a removable device in the 20 years that I have been using Windows, so I was wondering if what they are telling me is a valid statement? It seems kind of scary that this is happening.

How do i figure out what driver or even component windows wants software for when in the device manager under other devices it lists an unknown device and windows update cannot find anything.
Oh and is it appropriate for me to use this topic to ask another question regarding explorer.exe as while i am inside a folder i delete (by choosing delete from the context menu in the tree view) while inside that folder on this particular laptop PC explorer. always crashes, collect information, sends it and restarts explorer. I have not experienced this problem on any other pc running any version of windows 7, oh and the same happened with build 7264 x32 and the current install of build 7600 x64.
I got a new hard drive for my HP Pavilion DV6T-6000. Installed windows 7 ultimate and a bunch of drivers from HP's drivers section for my computer and I still have this unkown device. It wasn't there on my old drive so something isn't right here.

I just noticed it today, but there is an extra drive in the My Computer window, I use TrueCrypt as well as a hot swap bay for a SATA drive.When I try to open it, the drive says Not accessible, Access is Denied. Disk manager and Disk Part all only show my 5 physical drives that are indeed there.How can I get rid of this extra drive?

Double clicking on them, right-clicking, or simply hovering my mouse over them unfortunately does nothing -- I don't know what they are. I'm concerned they could be something malicious. View 3 Replies View RelatedI got a new Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop a week or so back, loaded Windows 7 RC and everything worked fine after a bit of fettling here and there. On Tuesday or Wednesday I had a problem where the laptop locked up while using a Logitech USB Radio mouse. Thinking the mouse caused the lockup, I disconnected it and have been using the touch pad since and no lockups. So far so good.
Then today I plugged in a set of Logitech USB headphones for Skype and I got an 'unknown device' error. I tried with other USB items, ADSL modem, memory stick, all had the same problem on both USB ports and nothing I did would solve the problem. Much googling and a search of this forum again came up with nothing I could use.
I then had a flash of brilliance - I figured it must have been the mouse that started the problem when the laptop froze and somehow something was blocking the USB useage. I plugged in the mouse whereupon it loaded up the software and worked fine, and now everything else loads up and works OK too!
I can't explain it, I'm just a programmer and don't really understand computers but if it helps anyone else in the same frustrating situation, there it is.

Everything worked and I've not added any new hardware. I have 2 partitions both with Windows 7 and the error showed in both. I've found that others were having the same issue, some needed drivers, some said cables needed replaced. Before I got serious with the troubleshooting, I read up a little and found a forum that said you should shut down then disconnect the power cord, wait a couple minutes then power up. Sometimes the motherboard needs to reboot and the devices will be reloaded or reassigned as they should be. It worked for me, it was an easy fix to an annoying problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an HP tx2-1020US laptop that I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Build 7100 on. So far, things are working pretty well with the exception of 2 issues. First off, under the device manager, I have an 'unknown device' listed. All of the manufacturer, etc. details are unknown. The only piece of info is the hardware id property which is:

Thus far, I have not been able to find any components which are not working and I have no external USB devices connected to the system. Any ideas how I would go about figuring out what device this is and finding a driver for it?
Then, the second issue is that every time I restart or shutdown the system, it flashes a BSOD. It then reboots without any problems and gives me the windows startup screen asking if I want to use safe mode or boot normally. If I boot normally, Windows gives me a pop-up saying the previous shut down was unexpected, but not other details. I have checked the logs and there is nothing in any of the Windows event logs.
The BSOD screen lists no driver, dll, or sys file, simply the following string of hex codes.

I found reference to the first 0x0000003Bcode in google relating to video issues, but I have the latest 64-bit Windows 7 driver installed from ATI already. So, can anybody offer any further translation of these codes?

View 3 Replies View RelatedUsing Windows 7 on my 3 year old home built system. My 2 year old Logitech gaming mouse suddenly stopped functioning. Upon bootup, the mouse works for about 20 seconds, then the device driver disables it and lists it in the USB list as "unknown device". It works on my other computer just fine, so I don't think the issue is with the mouse itself. Why is the device manager doing this, and how do I enable it?
