I had an "unknown device" show up in devices and printers a couple days ago. It was also listed in device manager and said it was a USB controller. Everything worked and I've not added any new hardware. I have 2 partitions both with Windows 7 and the error showed in both. I've found that others were having the same issue, some needed drivers, some said cables needed replaced. Before I got serious with the troubleshooting, I read up a little and found a forum that said you should shut down then disconnect the power cord, wait a couple minutes then power up. Sometimes the motherboard needs to reboot and the devices will be reloaded or reassigned as they should be. It worked for me, it was an easy fix to an annoying problem.
I've been having an issue with the xbox 360 wired controller since I built my new pc. When I plug it in via usb the device is not recognized by windows and no matter what I try it simply will not work.
Things I have tried: downloaded chipset drivers downloaded Software Downloads: Xbox 360 Controller for Windows tried the whole leaving the computer and all usb devices unplugged and off for a good few hours. ininstalled all the usb controllers and rebooted tried it in all usb ports, 3.0 and 2.0 searching for hours on google tried enabling/disabling usb legacy support in the bios tried running microsoft fixit thing (whatever that is) tried updating the drivers manually through the device manager but windows insists that the device is up to date. tried uninstalling and removing ethernet cable to try and force me to choose drivers. windows is fully updated I even bought a new controller thinking the last one was broken. The controller powers up when you plug it in, you can clearly see the green lights around the guide button flash but then nothing happens.
How do i figure out what driver or even component windows wants software for when in the device manager under other devices it lists an unknown device and windows update cannot find anything.
Oh and is it appropriate for me to use this topic to ask another question regarding explorer.exe as while i am inside a folder i delete (by choosing delete from the context menu in the tree view) while inside that folder on this particular laptop PC explorer. always crashes, collect information, sends it and restarts explorer. I have not experienced this problem on any other pc running any version of windows 7, oh and the same happened with build 7264 x32 and the current install of build 7600 x64.
I got a new hard drive for my HP Pavilion DV6T-6000. Installed windows 7 ultimate and a bunch of drivers from HP's drivers section for my computer and I still have this unkown device. It wasn't there on my old drive so something isn't right here.
Location: on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System

I got a new Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop a week or so back, loaded Windows 7 RC and everything worked fine after a bit of fettling here and there. On Tuesday or Wednesday I had a problem where the laptop locked up while using a Logitech USB Radio mouse. Thinking the mouse caused the lockup, I disconnected it and have been using the touch pad since and no lockups. So far so good.
Then today I plugged in a set of Logitech USB headphones for Skype and I got an 'unknown device' error. I tried with other USB items, ADSL modem, memory stick, all had the same problem on both USB ports and nothing I did would solve the problem. Much googling and a search of this forum again came up with nothing I could use.
I then had a flash of brilliance - I figured it must have been the mouse that started the problem when the laptop froze and somehow something was blocking the USB useage. I plugged in the mouse whereupon it loaded up the software and worked fine, and now everything else loads up and works OK too!
I can't explain it, I'm just a programmer and don't really understand computers but if it helps anyone else in the same frustrating situation, there it is.
So i've been playing games on my pc with a usb controller and it's been bugging but know when i plug it in a usb port i get usb unknown device does anyone know how to fix that?
A mouse by Ednet. Article nr 81050. Connected to PC with USB - doesn't work, although this red laser turns on, but cursor doesn't move, click also doesn't work. Windows says Unknown Device. Now when plugging on USB to PS/2 converter and connecting, mouse works as it should.Tried on two different PC, same results.
I have installed Windows 7 RC on 3 computers and setup the network as a home network, skipped creating "home-group" I have 2 XP systems on same network that I need to access. Anyway, I cant seem to figure out why/what this unknown device in my network map is? It shows up on all the computers that have the RC installed. I have attached a pic of this.
I just bought a amd phenom ii x4 955 and a asus m4a88tm le motherboard . After that i formated my hdd and installed win 7 ultimate and amd motherboard drivers. Now when i connect a usb device it shows Unknown usb device (except my mouse and keyboard).
In the device manager on my HP G60t there's an Unknown Device and an unknown memory controller that I've seen in the list for a long time. How can I find the drivers to these things, or should I just remove them?
have a thermaltake armor case whic is the first one they put out im pretty sure everything is working except the card reader in the front, the usb port works fine and thats the only thing i can think of that could be showing up as unknown, it came in the case and no hardware IDs show up in the device manager i know it worked fine in win xp but on win 7 ultimate 32bit i cant find any drivers to get it to work..

I installed the RC on 3 computers. Setup the network as a "home network". skipped the homegroup because I have 2 XP systems I need to access. any way, in the network map on the 3 RC systems a unknown device is listed. For the life of me, I cannot figure out what/why ?? I have attached a pic....
any ideas?
same setup when BETA was installed and didnt have this issue. No 3rd party firewall or network software is installed.
I am running XP mode virtually under 7 & have yellow exclamation marked "Other devices" "Virtual PC Integration Device" showing in device manager. Could this be my graphics card?
Having a problem with an unknown device under Other devices. I tried scanning for hardware changes and updating the device but keeps coming up with no driver found. As well as the fps of a game I play has dropped significantly from where it was a day ago and get prompted the game is having trouble recognizing my graphics card this has never happened before.
I am running XP mode virtually under 7 & have yellow exclamation marked "Other devices" "Virtual PC Integration Device" showing in device manager.I tried installing my graphics card's driver, which is probably stupid, but it ain't that.
I have an HP tx2-1020US laptop that I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Build 7100 on. So far, things are working pretty well with the exception of 2 issues. First off, under the device manager, I have an 'unknown device' listed. All of the manufacturer, etc. details are unknown. The only piece of info is the hardware id property which is:
USBVID_1B96$PID_0001&REV_0000&MI_02
USBVID_1B96&PID_0001&MI_02
Thus far, I have not been able to find any components which are not working and I have no external USB devices connected to the system. Any ideas how I would go about figuring out what device this is and finding a driver for it?
Then, the second issue is that every time I restart or shutdown the system, it flashes a BSOD. It then reboots without any problems and gives me the windows startup screen asking if I want to use safe mode or boot normally. If I boot normally, Windows gives me a pop-up saying the previous shut down was unexpected, but not other details. I have checked the logs and there is nothing in any of the Windows event logs.
The BSOD screen lists no driver, dll, or sys file, simply the following string of hex codes.
I found reference to the first 0x0000003Bcode in google relating to video issues, but I have the latest 64-bit Windows 7 driver installed from ATI already. So, can anybody offer any further translation of these codes?
Using Windows 7 on my 3 year old home built system. My 2 year old Logitech gaming mouse suddenly stopped functioning. Upon bootup, the mouse works for about 20 seconds, then the device driver disables it and lists it in the USB list as "unknown device". It works on my other computer just fine, so I don't think the issue is with the mouse itself. Why is the device manager doing this, and how do I enable it?
my laptop connected to internet but when i checking troubleshooting so the message showing is the remote device won't accept connection. so for what i need to do.
It's recognized in device manager as "Unknown device". But I've not connected anything to pc. Also all of my usb ports are working at 1.1 speed. When I try to connect any device, I get the message "that it could work faster, if i connect it to hi-speed usb port".
Recently purchased an older wired Xbox 360 controller to play emulated retro games on my netbook. From the research I've done, windows should install the correct drivers when I plug the controller into my USB port, correct? Absolutely nothing happens when I plug the controller into the computer. I'm new to PC so I'm sure I'm making a simple mistake. I've downloaded the Xbox 32Bit controller software from microsoft and still nothing. I see nothing in device manager or anywhere else on my computer. The controller doesn't light up when I plug it in or anything
I am in the process of configuring a new HP Z820 workstation. This thing is a beast and absolutely love the power. Just recently I started getting a strange device connection sound playing at login/startup. Just after the windows start up chime I hear the second device connect sound. I have nothing connected differently than I did a few days ago but all of a sudden this morning I now hear it. No USB HD's or flash drives connected.
I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way to figure out what Windows was connecting at login? Heard Event viewer mentioned somewhere but no idea how to use this or where to look.
I have a LaCie external hard drive which works fine on other pc's running Windows 7 Ultimate, but on this one it is an "unknown device". I have tried it in different ports but with the same result. I've checked with Windows Compatability and the exact model is listed there as being compatible. I've been to the manufacturer's website but there are no drivers available.I have the same problem with any USB device I plug into any port. I have tried a complete Windows re-install from a different CD but it made no difference. The only USB devices that work are the keyboard and mouse.I have given the LaCie HD as an example because I am hoping that if I can get a specific device to work, I may be able to solve the problem with others.
Since about 1-2 months ago whenever I hooked up my phone (HTC Rezound) to my computer through my USB chord I get an error message saying that it's an unrecognized device and that it was stopped because the device has shown previous problems. I used to upload videos and pictures from my phone to my computer about once a week for months straight and I didn't have a problem with it. Is there any way that I can adjust something in my computer to fix this?
