I noticed the other day when I was reading through the forum that there is a Windows 8 site. I checked it out and it is nice to see that when the betas come out people will be able to help each other there. I also have notice that there are some great people on this site and have resolved many problems with Windows 7.
My question is: Is there a sister site to this one for Windows XP? And do the same smart users here read and reply in it? I have a Windows XP problem that no one has been able to solve and I would like to post it in these forums and see if someone is smarter than Microsoft at resolving a problem.
I bought Windows 7 from Amazon.com and when I called up Microsoft for support they told me that they don't support open windows 7 what ever that means. So I paid the same price but no support because I didn't buy it from Microsoft. I'm just confused. Can someone explain this to me or was the tech person just full of crap?

I'm Mike Neil, general manager of Windows Server and Server Virtualization. Back in February we announced our work with Red Hat to enable cooperative technical support for virtualized environments. I'm excited to announce we've completed certification in each others' programs!
Customers now can deploy Microsoft Windows Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux and a range of select applications, virtualized on Red Hat and Microsoft virtualization products, knowing that the combined solutions will be supported by both companies.
Here are the details:Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2, 5.3, 5.4 have passed cert tests when running on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2. See more at RedHat's certified hardware site. Windows Server 2003/ Windows Server 2008 / Windows Server 2008 R2 are validated to run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4, using their KVM-based hypervisor.
See more at Microsoft Server Virtualization Validation Program site. Beyond the OS, both companies have select applications that would receive technical support when running on certified server virtualization software. The Microsoft applications can be seen in KB article 957006. On the Red Hat side, you can now run JBoss Enterprise Middleware within a virtual machine guest on Hyper-V and receive coordinated technical support. This is a step forward for enterprise customers, hosting providers, systems integrators, and those who want to offer their customers the top x86 operating systems to run applications.
when my computer goes to sleep after it's on for a while when I move the mouse to get the screen back up it shows the backround no icons or anything to click. Same if I turn it off and turn it back on. I have to turn it off and on many times then go to safe mode and shut down then turn it on again for it to work. Just now I had to turn it on/off 4 times for it to show the icons and task bar. Usually it is left blank with nothing to click having no choice but to turn it off. Norton says no viruses. My computer is HP with windows 7. I bought it in 2011.

View 14 Replies View RelatedToday I have been experiencing some problems with my computer with trying to turn it on and I am noticing 3 things that are unusual
First of all, I am noticing that when it turns on, there is no where for me to log-in. The blue background shows up like normal and I have a cursor to move around so it is not frozen-just no user image and nowhere to put in my password. Also, I am noticing that the size of everything on my screen (what actually shows up), is larger than usual, including the cursor which is much larger than normal. The last thing that I am noticing when turning on my computer is that if I leave my blank screen sit for a minute or two, it will automatically start to restore the system, so I don't know why it would be doing this if i never made a command for it.
Just wondering if anyone has any solutions to this other than a complete shutdown.
I place my computer in either stand by or hibernate and for some reason in the early ours of the morning it will turn itself on and sit on the login screen.
I think it must be some kind of back system operation which is sheduled but I have no idea what or where to find it.
Any ideas?

I recently built a new rig and have had no problems so far, but just the other day (even up til now), when I turn on the computer I do not see the standard post screens or even the Windows 7 loading screen. However my computer DOES boot into Windows 7 just fine and everything works as usual. But this is bothering me because if I need to make any changes to the BIOS I can't. Does anyone know how to fix this? To clarify though, computer is not hooked up to a monitor, but to an 32" Toshiba LCD TV. It's been hooked up this way since I built the rig though.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe problem I am having is that whenever I log onto my computer, I can see that the date and time at the bottom right of the screen always seems to reset to 31/12/2006. I always try to fix this by going to the option where you can synchronise the date and time with the Windows server time, however, this doesn't always seem to work.Another problem I am encountering is that the computer itself seems to be cutting out at different times, for example I could be 98% complete into a full system scan with Kaspersky 2012, but the computer suddenly cuts out, this would also be the case when browsing the internet or completing some Word documents. One other thing to mention as well is that since these problems have occurred, whenever I turn on my computer, I never have to press the power button on, as it seems to turn itself on whenever I switch the power supply on. This is also not normal.

Had trouble with computer in March 2011 and eventually had to ship to HP with extended warranty (which ran out march 2012). They installed new motherboard and RAM. We upgraded fan (there are 2) and took RAM from 2GB to 8GM in May 2011. Has been running great, no problems til this weekend. It will shut off like being unplugged. I can't get it to stay on very long before it does it again. I am getting the sign on screen and the desktop shows up. I can do about 1 minute of operations before it goes out.
Opened up the tower and the fans are running, nothing feels hot.
I believe it has to do with hardware, I am going to try replacing the RAM. Then checking the fans.
my wireless on windows 7 stops working or changes to another flormat but it still tells me the wireless is working. the only way to get it to start is to turn off the computer. it turns of while in use.

Yesterday night I turned off my computer by pressing the power button and now my mouse and keyboard do not work anymore(in Windows). I wanted to see if it was just the mouse/keyboard itself, but I noticed nothing detects when I connect a USB device. I tried plugging it in every port and it's the same. I thought it was a hardware issue, but now I realize that it is not.
I restarted my computer and tried to get into safe mode; it worked(I was able to go up and down to select which mode I wanted to enter). Once inside safe mode and windows is loaded, the keyboard just freezes. It does not work at all. I then decided to go into bios to see what is up and everything seems right. I even screwed around and messed up my overclock settings.
So now I know my keyboard still works and it's probably a Windows issue. I wanted to see if my mouse would work. I went into Windows Repair(I might have gotten the name wrong) and voila, my mouse worked!

When I try to install windows 7 from XP, it says that the PROMISE TECH ultra IDE driver is required. It then offers me the option to browse to it to conitnue my update.
Unfortunately I can not find any Vista or Windows 7 drivers for this piece of hardware. Its rather surprising as it was quite a popluar laptop at the time, very well known for its power.
Can i just skip this stage, and the drive still work? Or does anyone know of a solution? The laptop is 6 years old - surely someone must have updated theirs with vista and must have a windows 7 compatible driver?
