Ok I'm totally new to networks & everything so bear with me.
My computer is the main machine.
I have Win 7 64 & the other computer, which is my buddies is XP Pro 32.
I currently have an N wireless Netgear router that both computers are hooked up via ethernet & my machine also has the N wireless dongle from Netgear, but they dont have drivers for 64 yet.
Now I want to send a couple of files to my other computer which is my buddies. I want him to also be able to send me files, but he tends to surf the net a little less carelessly than I would and I want to make sure when hes sending or receiving info from my particular computer that I dont get a virus or anything.
So how do I set up a network between a Win 7 64 computer & an XP Pro 32 computer, making sure to extra safeguard my main machine?

My last computer is crashed and out of commision. I do not know which service pack it was running. how I can recover my old files?

problem either stopped on the usb data transfer from windows 7 PC to a usb HDD or flash drive; or crashed and give errors. However, i dont encount this sreious problem but rather annoying problem.
As soon as i use my Windows 7 PC to copy a file to usb stick, the process is all ok, but when i read the file, it seems to be corrupted, example, if i have put a avi file in the usb drive, it will play as skipped.
I have updated the hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972 but still doesnt fix my problem. I have updated the chipset driver from nvidia web site, still no help.
I know for sure that problem occured after i fresh installed to windows 7 from xp pro. I have also tried to uninstall the usb root hub but still give me the same driver as it was.

I have a desktop PC running Win 7 Ultimate 64 with a secured wifi home network. I also have a Droid 2 smartphone on the network. I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out a way to do file transfers between my droid (mainly music and photos) and pc.
When I try and view my PC files using any app on the droid I will see all the "public folders" but when I try and view any of the default music, documents, pictures libraries I get a user permission failure (username and password authentication needed). The twisted part is I have no username and password set up on my Win 7 PC . When it boots up there is no user name or password required. My wife and I are the only users so we have no "accounts set up". The Admin is the default account and there is no password.
Our daughter has a PC running Win Xp and I can view all shared files on that PC via the droid. Driving me nuts.
I assume the other option would be to somehow "include" all my music, pictures, videos, etc, from my default library in the "public" libraries.

I used the Windows 7 Easy Transfer for the first time and much to my surprise it worked without a problem.I previously asked questions of file transfer but after the answers I received I thought there might be a easier way to do this.My situation was migrating files from a laptop HP dv7-1247 x64 to a Netbook Acer 722-BZ197 x64 which both use Windows 7 HP SP1.Inititing the file transfer they utilize the terms from " old computer to new computer on this procedure. There is no mention of Windows 7 and only XP and Vista. Windows 7 was placed on the market 22 months ago but is not included on the instruction. As I proceded with this operation there a three methods available, migrating cable, flash card and network. Since I do not possess the cable nor flash card I selected the network After I intitiated the transfer from my " OLD HP with Windows 7 " it proved me with a code number to be used with the " NEW Acer with Windows 7.Proceeding to tha ACER it asked me for this code which I placed in the box. A new screen appeared but much to my surpise it asked if this transfer is from XP, Vista or Windows 7. I selected the Windows 7 and the complete transfer of my files was accomplished in less then 29 Min.

I have a wired network - ethernet cable from pc upstairs down to modem at television. Cable from modem to WD TV live. So all networked and wd tv is showing up correctly as a network drive. If I transfer a 350mb video file from my pc to the hard drive attached to the WD TV live, over the wired network, it takes just over one minute i.e. just over 5 megabytes a second transfer. Not great but adequate. If however I connect my Nokia N8 to the same pc and copy the file from the N8 rather than the PC (even though the N8 is connected to the pc!) the file goes to the WD TV in 28 seconds - over 12 megs a second. How can a file get transferred quicker over the network from a phone connected to the pc than from the pc itself to the same destination?
ps - the phone is displayed under "portable devices" rather than "hard disk drives" and the properties suggest it is using a protocol called MTP - media transfer protocol. I've also added another external usb drive to test the transfer and received the same results as the built in hard drive. So it does appear to be something to do with "hard drives" versus "portable devices" as recognized and dealt with by Windows.

Here is my brain teaser,One machine on my home LAN uploads files to other computers very slowly although the same file transfer originated from the other computer proceeds normally.Fundamentally there are four computers. Three run Windows 7 64-bit professional or ultimate. The fourth runs Windows XP service pack three.Zotac Windows 7 Mediacenter Windows 7,Deb Windows 7,Ben Dell -Windows XP All of the computers have one gigabyte ethernet circuitry and the switch is one gigabyte. I have used the same 1 GB file to to the testing using the straightforward Windows Explorer copy and paste functions. The computer named "Zotac" is a machine which seems to upload very slowly.Listed below are file transfer times between the C drives of the one gigabyte file. As you can see the same file transfer differs depending on which machine originates it. From Zotac to Mediacenter, uploaded from Zotac-seven hours, downloaded from Mediacenter -10 seconds,From Zotac to Deb Windows 7,uploaded from Zotac-seven hours, downloaded from Deb Windows 7-10 seconds! The Zotac machine seems to be able to upload to the Windows XP machine properly however. Interestingly the same file transfer originated from the Windows XP machine proceeds somewhat more slowlyFrom Zotac to Ben Dell-Windows XP,uploaded from Zotac 2 min.downloaded from Bendell -15 min.Because the same problematic slow file uploads from machine "Zotac" occur properly when originated from other machines I have to assume that the hard drive read write functions as well as the network infrastructure are operating correctly. There are no video streaming or other file transfers occurring on the network.

I have a Dell XPS 15Z with gigabit ethernet port, have dgs 1005d gigabit switch and WDTV live hub also with gigabit "capability"... The network cables should be fine...
The issue is that the file transfer (these are usually HD movies) from my laptop to WDTV are rather slow having in mind it's a gigabit network connection... The speed tops 15 MB/s. Same thing if I connect WDTV directly with my laptop.
The switch indicates (green light) it has set-up a gigabit connection both with WDTV and my laptop.
I have disabled autotuning, RDC, AV software etc. Tried with jumbo frames, disabling flow control - EVERYTHING

At first, when I checked this on this new rig, file transfers ran between 60-100 mbps, but the last several times it has dropped off to 1-2 mbps. I checked the drive involved with HD Tune, and it performed about the same as it did on the first test, so I don't think that it is a hardware problem. Nothing else was running that should slow things down, so what else could account for this?
