View 3 RepliesI recently reinstalled Windows 7 and I copied my old appdata folder. I do not know if this is what is causing the issue, as it was causing invisible icons to be pinned to my start menu.Anyways, my current problem is, when I choose to display my desktop toolbar on the task bar, the toolbar displays my current desktop shortcuts, the sub folders you see when you view the window (ie, libraries, homegroup, network, computer, control panel, user folder, recycle bin) and icons that are not displayed elsewhere, such as a second control panel. What could be the problem and how would I stop the sub folders and second control panel from displaying?I have tried to remove the icons from the desktop folder, but they do not have an option to be removed. I have tried deleting them from the task bar toolbar itself, but it acts as if it deleted it, but they do not go away
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am connecting to a remote desktop that I have been connecting to for months now but suddenly today the taskbar and start menu from the remote computer disappeared and I can only see my laptop's menu and taskbar. This means I can't get into the Computer or folders of the remote desktop as there is not a shortcut on the desktop. It is also generally annoying.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have many shortcuts on my desktop, which are successfully locked in position (They don't auto-arrange.), and I have the desktop showing as a tooolbar on my taskbar. The desktop icons showing in my taskbar stayed in place as arranged until last week. (Our IT guy cleaned my computer after a Trojan alert, and he says he only added a single icon to always show on the taskbar, but made no other changes.) Now the desktop icons in the taskbar autoarrange everytime windows explorer is turned off (or here lately, stops working for a moment). After manually arranging these desktop icons in the taskbar, how can I once again lock them in place so they won't auto-arrange?

View 8 Replies View RelatedYesterday, I upgraded my Vostro 1500 laptp from WinXP to Windows 7 without any problem except for icon size. Correct grahpic driver (GEForce 8400M GS) for Windows 7 was also updated. I like the smaller icons size on desktop and taskbar in WinXP with native screen resolution of 1280 x 800. After converting to Windows 7, the screen size was also restored to 1280 x 800 too. But the icons size on both desktop and taskbar is rather bigger in Windows 7. (Text size is just fine). I could not resize the same icon size as in Win XP. I tried to change but 9 point Segoe UI at 96pixels per inch is default in Windows 7. The scale to the percentage of normal size is 100% or above, not less than 100%.
View 6 Replies View RelatedYesterday a user complained that there laptop had slowed down in recent days. I went ahead and ran msconfig the I deleted most of the programs that were running on startup. I also stopped some services. The PC speed improved but when the user restarted the laptop there were no icons or taskbar.
I pressed ctrl-alt-del and started task manager. I started explorer.exe and my computer showed up with the drives on the machine. I also ran sfc /scannow and it did give any errors, i created another profile and it has the same results. When I right click on the desktop nothing shows up. I booted into safe mode and there are no restore points to recover to.
I suspect the problem is registry related and was caused by me deleting the startup programs. I am not sure how I can restore the laptop without reinstalling it.
When I start Windows 7 only the wallpaper shows up, there are no icons or task bar. This is a newer HP desktop computer, only 4 months old and has very little use and almost nothing loaded on it.The problem is intermittent. Somethings it boots normally with full icons and taskbar (but the problem returns in a day or two, or the next time I restart the computer).I have seen on other posts to check whether "explorer.exe" is running. Have checked Task Manager and it is.Antivirus Programs (all up to date and run several times with no issues (in safe mode))
1. Microsoft Security Essentials
2. AVG 2012
3. Malwarebytes
4. CCleaner
Have run System Restore 10 to 15 times (sometimes will restore to normal for a day or two, then problem returns, most times still no icons or taskbar).Have run
1. System Restore
2. Check Disk
Recently my mouse, taskbar and desktop icons have disappeared from my screen. All it shows is the desktop wallpaper. I can boot into safe mode no problem.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAll my desktop icons are missing, no start button or task bar.The only way I can access my computer is via safe mode. Two things happened this morning so I am not sure which one is the culprit. Firstly I had an update from Java. Then I shut my computer down and went to bed.During the night, my UPS board starting beeping. We were having power problems, I think a brown out.The power went out completely then all my other electronics like my tv, kettle, washing machine etc, starting working properly again. So I can't say whether it was the power problem that has caused this or the Java update. I have done a system restore which didn't help. I have done Windows+R and typed in 'explorer.exe"..which only gave me a black screen. I have run all antivirus programs and nothing is being picked up.
View 7 Replies View RelatedHope this is in the correct section. When I open word starter 2010, excel starter 2010, or even save a web page to my favorites in ie9 my desktop icons and task bar will go white and back to normal like a refresh or something. It happens on my desktop and laptop, both have windows 7 pro, one is 64bit and other 32bit, all updates performed. It has been something i have ignored since i dont do those tasks daily but recently i have and its getting annoying now, whats funny is the white/refresh period seems to take longer on my intel 2500k desktop vs the amd athlon neo netbook. Since it occurs on both systems i dont think its a gpu driver issue, besides the desktop one has had different drivers on the gtx570 with no change.
View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing x64 Ultimate SP1 here. Just tidying up my desktop and taskbar to the way I like them. Nothing too tricky here, just minimizing clutter and placing shortcuts to Adobe CS5 apps on the task bar after upgrading from CS4 to CS5. My prior desktop was a bit more cluttered with shortcuts, and the taskbar held only CS4 shortcuts pinned to the bar. After setting everything to the way I want it, saving my desktop theme, and even rebooting a few times, the desktop configuration seems static. I also created a restore point with the new desktop and taskbar arrangement included.
But, come back the next day and it's all back to the old cluttered desktop and CS4 icons pinned to the taskbar! It doesn't seem to affect my desktop wallpaper settings, though --only the dtop icons and pinned taskbar icons. Not using any 3rd party desktop managers or the like. It always seems to happen sometime during the night. When I check to see whether a Windows update has taken place, most times there hasn't been one. This has been going on now for over a week. Sure getting tired of the system restore routine just to get back to my current desktop config.
i had my desktop taskbar and start bottom... the problem is no desktop image same on my taskbar... only the tittle i can see on my desktop but still i can access to my program... another things is my start bottom is lock or shall i say not functioning only left click is working but right click nothing happened.... more over its to bad to me i can't access to Internet....

View 8 Replies View RelatedBasically, all of the icons on my desktop, as well as my entire taskbar, including the windows icon, have disappeared. It happened about 20 minutes ago, when I forced firefox to close via task manager. After I hit End Process, the icons and my taskbar disappeared. I can't right-click my desktop either. However, my desktop background, as well as the toolbar on the top is still there, and all of my programs as well as explorer are accessible. I've done one cold restart, and nothing changed. I've gone into the control panel, but I couldn't access anything associated to the task bar, and my windows key does not work as well.

Some application icons and files that are use them to open aren't displaying their proper icon and are displaying a default windows icon.
This is happening in the taskbar, the desktop and the start menu. I've tried deleting the iconcache.db file which didn't work.

Okay, I am at my wits end. I have tried to repair. I rebuilt the icon Cache, and used the registry fix that was available here on the forum and nothing is working. Here is a screen shot to show what is wrong:
All application files(.exe) are the same. I don't know what else to try.
From time to time when my PC boots it displays just the wallpaper and no icons. I am there stuck at I have to switch off and bootup via Safe Mode. What is causing this problem and how to stop it happening.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI created a few shortcuts from chrome and added them to my Taskbar for ease of use. I created one for each of my multiple Gmail accounts etc and I changed their icons to something so I can identify which was which. The shortcut's took the icon and worked fine for a short period than I noticed every time I click on the icon after changing the default icon to my new one It would change the icon back to Gmails default one.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy new laptop is only 5 weeks old. It is Windows 7 64 bits. Since yesterday, my desktop does not display Windows 7 logo nor HP logo. Instead, the desktop is white color covering my blue wallpaper and has huge black letters message saying: "Stop! You may have to clean up your computer with our program because it may be clogged up. "The service trays lower left and lower right both display the few icons correctly (volume, Skype, Weather, Internet Explorer 9 etc.) When I click on these icons they work. They work. How do I gat rid of this annoying message and get back my blue wallpaper and desktop with Windows logo& and HP logo? There is nothing to click on to delete the message. My Norton and Microsoft Essentials both ran a long scan and both tell me I have no virus.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have two computers (laptop and desktop) both with windows 7 ultimate 64bit and I always get "the password or username is incorrect" error when remoting in to my laptop from my desktop, but not to my desktop from my laptop. I have "allowed connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop" under remote settings on both computers. Set up Remote Desktop users allowing "everyone", and checked all firewall setting with AVG and Windows firewall to make sure port 3389 it allowed, as well as disabling the firewalls altogether. But I still get the same error and yes I am absolutely certain the log on info is correct.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSome of the icons normally showing what a program type is are missing now. I HAVE all the DESKTOP icons and those in the system tray. But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.
