Yesterday, I upgraded my Vostro 1500 laptp from WinXP to Windows 7 without any problem except for icon size. Correct grahpic driver (GEForce 8400M GS) for Windows 7 was also updated. I like the smaller icons size on desktop and taskbar in WinXP with native screen resolution of 1280 x 800. After converting to Windows 7, the screen size was also restored to 1280 x 800 too. But the icons size on both desktop and taskbar is rather bigger in Windows 7. (Text size is just fine). I could not resize the same icon size as in Win XP. I tried to change but 9 point Segoe UI at 96pixels per inch is default in Windows 7. The scale to the percentage of normal size is 100% or above, not less than 100%.
I'm looking for a way to either resize or remove the icons from the taskbar, here is a screenshot just to be clear: (red box around them)The reason I want to resize or remove them is because I've got my taskbar set very small (as you can see in the picture) and the icons are too big to fit properly on the taskbar.I've tried fooling around in the WindowMetrics registry key, but I couldn't find anything useful.
when installing Windows 7 I unintentionally enlarged the size of the icons on my desktop. However, I am using the standard (100%) setting for the size of the computer screen. The icons and the side board are more than double as large as they were by Vista and XP.
I have many shortcuts on my desktop, which are successfully locked in position (They don't auto-arrange.), and I have the desktop showing as a tooolbar on my taskbar. The desktop icons showing in my taskbar stayed in place as arranged until last week. (Our IT guy cleaned my computer after a Trojan alert, and he says he only added a single icon to always show on the taskbar, but made no other changes.) Now the desktop icons in the taskbar autoarrange everytime windows explorer is turned off (or here lately, stops working for a moment). After manually arranging these desktop icons in the taskbar, how can I once again lock them in place so they won't auto-arrange?
Yesterday a user complained that there laptop had slowed down in recent days. I went ahead and ran msconfig the I deleted most of the programs that were running on startup. I also stopped some services. The PC speed improved but when the user restarted the laptop there were no icons or taskbar.
I pressed ctrl-alt-del and started task manager. I started explorer.exe and my computer showed up with the drives on the machine. I also ran sfc /scannow and it did give any errors, i created another profile and it has the same results. When I right click on the desktop nothing shows up. I booted into safe mode and there are no restore points to recover to.
I suspect the problem is registry related and was caused by me deleting the startup programs. I am not sure how I can restore the laptop without reinstalling it.
When I start Windows 7 only the wallpaper shows up, there are no icons or task bar. This is a newer HP desktop computer, only 4 months old and has very little use and almost nothing loaded on it.The problem is intermittent. Somethings it boots normally with full icons and taskbar (but the problem returns in a day or two, or the next time I restart the computer).I have seen on other posts to check whether "explorer.exe" is running. Have checked Task Manager and it is.Antivirus Programs (all up to date and run several times with no issues (in safe mode))
1. Microsoft Security Essentials
2. AVG 2012
3. Malwarebytes
4. CCleaner
Have run System Restore 10 to 15 times (sometimes will restore to normal for a day or two, then problem returns, most times still no icons or taskbar).Have run
Taskbar and desktop icons not displaying. For some reason I've lost all my desktop icons and my taskbar, all the displays is my normal desktop background.
Recently my mouse, taskbar and desktop icons have disappeared from my screen. All it shows is the desktop wallpaper. I can boot into safe mode no problem.
All my desktop icons are missing, no start button or task bar.The only way I can access my computer is via safe mode. Two things happened this morning so I am not sure which one is the culprit. Firstly I had an update from Java. Then I shut my computer down and went to bed.During the night, my UPS board starting beeping. We were having power problems, I think a brown out.The power went out completely then all my other electronics like my tv, kettle, washing machine etc, starting working properly again. So I can't say whether it was the power problem that has caused this or the Java update. I have done a system restore which didn't help. I have done Windows+R and typed in 'explorer.exe"..which only gave me a black screen. I have run all antivirus programs and nothing is being picked up.
Hope this is in the correct section. When I open word starter 2010, excel starter 2010, or even save a web page to my favorites in ie9 my desktop icons and task bar will go white and back to normal like a refresh or something. It happens on my desktop and laptop, both have windows 7 pro, one is 64bit and other 32bit, all updates performed. It has been something i have ignored since i dont do those tasks daily but recently i have and its getting annoying now, whats funny is the white/refresh period seems to take longer on my intel 2500k desktop vs the amd athlon neo netbook. Since it occurs on both systems i dont think its a gpu driver issue, besides the desktop one has had different drivers on the gtx570 with no change.
Using x64 Ultimate SP1 here. Just tidying up my desktop and taskbar to the way I like them. Nothing too tricky here, just minimizing clutter and placing shortcuts to Adobe CS5 apps on the task bar after upgrading from CS4 to CS5. My prior desktop was a bit more cluttered with shortcuts, and the taskbar held only CS4 shortcuts pinned to the bar. After setting everything to the way I want it, saving my desktop theme, and even rebooting a few times, the desktop configuration seems static. I also created a restore point with the new desktop and taskbar arrangement included.
But, come back the next day and it's all back to the old cluttered desktop and CS4 icons pinned to the taskbar! It doesn't seem to affect my desktop wallpaper settings, though --only the dtop icons and pinned taskbar icons. Not using any 3rd party desktop managers or the like. It always seems to happen sometime during the night. When I check to see whether a Windows update has taken place, most times there hasn't been one. This has been going on now for over a week. Sure getting tired of the system restore routine just to get back to my current desktop config.
i had my desktop taskbar and start bottom... the problem is no desktop image same on my taskbar... only the tittle i can see on my desktop but still i can access to my program... another things is my start bottom is lock or shall i say not functioning only left click is working but right click nothing happened.... more over its to bad to me i can't access to Internet....
I`ve got a weird problem that keeps happening. Without any errors or warningall of my Desktop Icons become frozen. I cannot activate any of them. If Ihave any windows open in the Taskbar or programmes running in the System trayI can left/right click on any of them and they all workfine(Programmes/Window Explorer/IE7 etc). I can access the Start menu andis the solution if it happens in Windows Vista but this
Basically, all of the icons on my desktop, as well as my entire taskbar, including the windows icon, have disappeared. It happened about 20 minutes ago, when I forced firefox to close via task manager. After I hit End Process, the icons and my taskbar disappeared. I can't right-click my desktop either. However, my desktop background, as well as the toolbar on the top is still there, and all of my programs as well as explorer are accessible. I've done one cold restart, and nothing changed. I've gone into the control panel, but I couldn't access anything associated to the task bar, and my windows key does not work as well.
I created a few shortcuts from chrome and added them to my Taskbar for ease of use. I created one for each of my multiple Gmail accounts etc and I changed their icons to something so I can identify which was which. The shortcut's took the icon and worked fine for a short period than I noticed every time I click on the icon after changing the default icon to my new one It would change the icon back to Gmails default one.
I just got Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and all is great except for one thing. I had the resolution set at the recommended setting (1024 x 768) and all looked normal except on the taskbar. I couldn't get to the Start button or internet icon because it was too far to the left and off screen.
I changed the resolution to 800 x 600 and can see the buttons now but everything else to view is huge! I only want to set the taskbar to see all the buttons on the left. My monitor is the same one I used on the old computer with the resolution set at 1024 x 768 and all was fine on that.
I was just wondering if it is at all possible to alter the height of the taskbar in Windows 7? On Windows Vista I had made my taskbar thinner to be about the same size as the taskbar in Windows 98 etc.I cannot remember how I did it, but I was just wondering if it is possible to do the same in windows 7?
I have tried everything and exhausted my knowledge when it comes to hardware, my computer starting giving me random BSOD's, it only works in normal mode, and safe mode with networking for a short amount of time, but works perfectly fine in regular safe mode, I also let it sit in CMOS for about and hour without any reboot, I updated all my drivers which inherently has made things slightly worse (i.e BSOD's are more frequent) and it keeps spitting out different error codes the most recent one is the title and the only other one I can remember involved a "BAD_POOL_HEADER" or something along the lines of that? Also though I have manually backed up my data and have made Norton Ghost Images I would prefer not to reinstall unless someone knows how to restore just my files and programs but not the OS state. And I could not include a system health report as the Performance Logs & Alerts Service fails to run in safe mode but I have included my latest mini-dump files in the zip file attached.

Can I actually specify a custom size for these taskbar icons other than small or large as here? I have so many of them and my taskbar have already two rows and sometimes when I open programs or whatever else that is NOT included as a shortcut button on the taskbar, it takes extra space at which point the taskbar becomes scrollable with 3 rows. Not a good thing. I hate it with a passion. Yes I could make my task bar with 3 rows, but no, I don't like to waste my precious screen space. So basically I'd like to to make these icons a little smaller, kind of like the QuickLaunch icons.
I really loved XP's smaller taskbar, I don't mind windows 7's big bulky icons, but i absolutely hate the windows 7 smaller icons on the taskbar option.
They are just TOO SMALL to see, and they make the image look like 16x16 images, is there anyway to make them SLIGHTLY bigger? Maybe a regedit hack of sorts?
I bought a new Gateway laptop. Installed Windows 7 home premium 32-bit that came with it. Once in a while, after I close the lid, my desktop icons will change size, sometimes smaller, sometimes bigger. It's really annoying because when it's really big, the icons move around. I'll have to change them back to the size I want and move them back to the place they were. I've updated everything i.e. windows update, hardware drivers etc. I've disabled desktop gadgets but it still does it.
all my icons on desktop and computer have turned to notepad icons... and they open with some text on notepad... looking for a solution to go back to normal settings...
I've got multiple users and the icons on the welcome screen are small. I would like to increase their size, but I have not been able to find a way to do it.
