Sudden Drop In Performance By Around 60% / Most Noticeable In Games
Sep 23, 2012
when I downloaded the Torchlight 2 demo from Steam and started playing it on max settings. Lo and behold, I only got 13fps while playing the game Which is weird because I'm able to hit ~25fps playing Crysis 2 on max (a game with much higher sysytem requirements) After more observation since then, I've noticed that my laptop in general has slowed down a bit the mouse movement isn't as smooth, apps don't load as fast, and the system in general doesn't respond as quick as before. So finally, I decided to benchmark my system again running Crysis 2 on max. Luckily, I bench-marked it two weeks ago using Fraps and got this result on max settings: Ultra Detail; DX11; High-Res Textures Min, Max, Avg 16, 31, 22.398..But just now when I bench-marked the game again - at the exact same part of the game I played. That's a 60% drop in FPS, which makes me positive that there's something wrong with my laptop but I have no idea where to start diagnosing this problem My system specs are in my profile.

I've made a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate a few days ago and I started to encounter the following problem after 30-60 minutes. It usually happens when I'm running a computer game (any game), I experience a sudden fps drop, even though before that, on maximum quality the game was running perfectly, becomes unenjoyable, quit the game. The CPU meter gadget shows 100%, and even after I close everything, browser, windows explorer, the best I get at idle is 70-80% and if I try to open anything at all, it becomes stuck at 100% again.
So I open task manager and go processes, put them in a descending order of processor usage, and see that they nowhere near add up to 100%, even though at the bottom the task manager says CPU usage is at 100%. Physical memory is usually around 20-60%, no problems with that. If I go to Performance tab, and click on resource monitor, I experience the same thing: the actual usage is nowhere near 100%, I can't see any processes that would explain for the performance drop, in fact the highest demanding process is the resource monitor itself. The problem persists until I restart the computer, shutting down takes much longer now.
It's a HP Compaq 8510w laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Build 7600
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2 GHZ)
Hewlett-Packard 30C5 (Intel PM965 (Cresline-PM) + ICH8M-E)
4GB memory
nVidia Quadro FX 570M [HP]
Intel 82801HB ICH8 - High Definition Audio [B1]
I've tried several suggestions:
Disabling HDAC in Device Manager (High Definition Audio Controller)
Disabling Audio Enhancements in Sound>Speaker Properties
Installing the very newest drivers, including chipset drivers
Running programs in XP compatibility mode
Disabling the gadgets
I've no reason to think I've been infected by malicious software, I can't find any suspicious processes running.

a couple of month ago, my computer had a sudden drop in GPU memory, I've looked around on the web for possible reasons but I've come up with nothing. Before this sudden drop I had about 2800MB's of GPU memory, but now it's down to 727MB's.

I'm having some trouble (it started about 3 days ago, playing Diablo III) with FPS drops on games. I was playing D3, alt-tabing be cause of a skype chat (adding and removing ppl) and after lot of alt-tabing the FPS dropped to 10. I restarted the client, still FPS 10. Restarted the PC, it works fine. I thought it might have been a bug on the alt-tabing thing, until the next day where I had this same problem with Skyrim two times, once after playing for about 2 hours and another after playing for about 1 hours, then exiting the game and reloading because of a internal Skyrim bug. There seem to be no temperature problems on my CPU or GPU, I'm monitoring and unfortunately I cant emulate the problem for now...

Something is wrong with my Sony Vaio FW series laptop.. I get major FPS spikes in any game I attempt to run (Dragon Nest, Audition), with FPS dipping down to ~10 every five seconds. When I check Task Manager, it's the games that are taking up the most CPU with overall CPU usage at 90%+. This is really strange and abnormal as I had never had any problems with those games taking up CPU and fps spiking until today (they ran fine yesterday).Between yesterday and today.. I used compressed air to clean my laptop's fan, and I visited some movie watching sites (which resulted in some popups appearing). I'm unsure if the problem can be attributed to a virus, but I ran a full scan of Malwarebytes and did a deep clean on Advanced System Care, none of which helped fix the problem. Firefox, Skype, and other applications appear to run as quickly and smoothly as they did before. However, I've gotten three BSODs in the last 30 minutes, and my laptop appears to be overheating: Here is my Hijack This Log : xks.
EDIT: I understand that a system restore will likely solve all problems, but I want to save that as a last resort.
EDIT1: I think the BSODs were a result of me running CPUID HWMonitor to check for the temperatures - each BSOD occurred right after or soon after I ran it. I'm unsure why running that specific program triggers a BSOD, but if I leave it alone my computer appears to be fine (no BSODs so far after I stopped running it).

I have sony VPCF1 laptop, which worked fine until a month ago. Windows 7 home premium 64bits. All of a sudden I started getting random shutdowns whenever I'm playing games. (namely Diablo3 and league of legends)I used to play Skyrim on this laptop without any shutdown issues. I suspected overheating problem, but the speedfan log just before the shutdown shows GPU at 80 C and CPU at around 75.I cleaned out the heat sink and re-applied thermal paste anyways. However, I clean the dust in heat sink every 3 months so there wasn't much to begin with. I also bought a cooling pad, which doesn't seem to lower the temperature at all. I checked the hardwares using vaio care none of them showed known issues.

I would get a random black screen while playing an online game on my laptop (this happens randomly but usually 15-30mins after starting Windows and start playing the game). After the black screen appeared, it would automatically reboot to this windows error recovery page with options to go into safe mode (networking/command prompt) or just boot windows normally.I chose to boot Windows normally but after getting into Windows 7 and started playing a while, a random BSOD would appear. It has happened for 2-3 days straight. The attached is the mini dump.
Note: I did not install anything new to my laptop, I have ran chkdsk and sfc /scannow and found nothing.I have no idea what caused the black screen and the BSOD.

i got this problem playing high performance games..When i enter the following games (below) my graphic hits 75 - 85 celcius (what worries me is the world of warcraft... It's only on HIGH and it goes to almost 90 celcius)
World of warcraft (high)
Battlefield 3 (Ultra)
Guild wars 2 (Ultra)
I was reading abit about this problem on google and saw a person telling another one that was having the same problem as me that a PSU could heat up your GPU if it is just under your GPU.. - My PSU is not far from my GPU and the fan on my PSU is almost just up against my GPU so i kinda wonder can a PSU really heat up my GPU that much?My cousin got a very tiny case for his pc, he got a gtx 560ti and hits 65 - 70 celcius and goes 50fps in stormwind with 60+ players around him and 200 - 250fps outside stormwind. in stormwind i got 20 fps and in world i got 60 - 100 fps. I got a Evga GTX 580 1534MB myself and should be alot better then the gtx 560TI.. He also runs 20 - 30 fps higher then me in Guild wars (60 - 90fps) i am running 30 - 50fps..

I've just started playing a game (the Witcher Enhanced Edition) and the performance is terrible. I might get 3 or 4 secs of action then it stops completely for about a second. In short it is unplayable. I've noticed the same on other games (games are probably the only time I really test my system,) If I had a low powered system this would be understandable but I do not. Indeed the same games run acceptably on my old XL laptop and my mother's low spec Windows 7 system.
My spec
Intel Core2 Quad core Q6700
3Gb RAM
ATI Radeon HD5700xx
Windows 7 - 64 bit
Realtek HD Audio
Windows Assessment
Processor 5.9
Memory5.9
Graphics7.1
Gaming Graphics7.1
Primary Hard Disk5.7
Overall 5.7
All the drivers are bang up to date as is W7. Because of the problems I've created a dedicated games boot. Aero is switched off, No Anti-Virus SW. No unnecessary programs. This was a new build of W7-64. This improves things only a little - it is still unplayable. Since the problem was noted I've ungraded my Graphics, to no effect. I'm not being over fussy - it really makes gameplay impossible.

I have been getting the occasional BSOD the past month or two which I shrugged off and presumed to be driver based. After updating on each occasion and not getting one for a few days, I just assumed the problem would go away. It's been getting more and more frequent recently and after uninstalling all Firewall and antivirus programmes and still getting crashes this morning. Here is the software details:
- I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
- The original installed OS is Windows 7 Ultimate
- Full Retail Version
- The system is about a year and a half old.
- I reinstalled Windows in January more as a clean up than because of problems.
Few hardware information:
- ASUS M4n68T-M LE Mobo
- AMD Athlon II X3 440 Processor (3 CPUs), ~3.0GHz
- Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 Graphics Card
- 4 GB RAM
- Previously had AVG and ZoneAlarm installed, both uninstalled, still get BSOD (I am aware Antivirus, particularly AVG, is a common cause of BSOD)
I keep all my drivers up to date as much as possible out of habit. Attached to this post is the necessary dump info.

I have this weird thing going on in my laptop. On any program a drop down menu will appear and then starts scrolling down. It's like flashing cursor and not letting me type anything. It happens for all programs, whether I try to save a file or try to type a command in run. Even when I try to open a small sized notepad and try to scroll it down, it goes back up automatically and not coming to the end. Is there some kind of virus or an intruder/trojan hunter?Already tried running MS virus scanner. alkaparikh has chosen the best answer to his/her question.Click here to view the answer that was selected.

While typing, and it happens mostly in Word but occurs in any Office program, a random drop down menue appears. In addition, a letter will get highlighted like I did a search on it, also lines of text in the middle of a paragraph will shift and center for no reason. I have Norton so no problems there but feel like my laptop is possessed. Using Windows 7 and Office 2010.

More importantly, I do miss the drop down menues that were a feature of previous versions - where, in particular can I now manage my toolbars, ensure everything is locked etc. And finally, is it possible to convert the 'Tools' button into a toolbar?

restarting esc and ctrl keys are not stuck clicklock is not checked in control panel no vmware installed dropbox, evernote but uninstalled it just in case

A day or two ago, I noticed that the drop down menus (like for any program, File, Edit, whatever) are suddenly all shoved to the far left side of my screen, unless they're about 3 - 4 inches in on my screen. Instead of starting on the left edge of the menu you click on, such as favorites, and having a slight gap between the edge of the menu and the edge of the screen, it shoves it flush to the edge of the screen.

I was unable to move files around in Windows by dragging and dropping. I am fully capable of dragging the files, but as soon as I drop them, they just go right back to where they were. No moving, no copying, no error message, just a lack of anything past me dragging an icon and it resuming its original position.

Drop down menus and windlows close before I can make a selection. This started after I stayed in a hotel with 1 gb/sec connect speed. The house computers always defaulted to switch user. After I check out I discovered that my lap top did also. I cannot even delete a progam using control panel. The window immediately scrolls to the top each try.

I have a Dell Studio laptop which has 4GB ram and a core 2 duo processor with a Windows 7 OS.. The problem with this laptop is that, I am not able to drag and drop icons on the desktop nor in the folders... Drag and Drop never functions.. I feel convinient using Drag and drop and now this is a big nuisance for me as I am not able to freely move my desktop icons nor drag and drop the files into folders as and when required.. I also unchecked the auto arrange Desktop in the context menu.. I tried in Safe Mode.. I used a bunch of Registry cleaners, C Cleaners and what not everything.. But I am not able to solve this problem.. Can you please let me know how I should solve this problem...
Also I also have another problem during the Startup of my computer.Once I start my computer and once all Icons and taskbar come, I try to open any application or any program like IE or Firefox and when I open it, the windows freezes and says not responding.I try opening "Task Manager " from the Task Bar and and even right click does'nt function.I feel as if everything freezes up and so I need to hit "Alt+Ctlrl+Del" for opening Taskmanager.. This sounds very wierd for me as I have to do this same operation every time..My configuration is above mentioned and I also share this little info with you.My hard Disk memory usage is about 268Gb of 280Gb with a single partiotion.

So i've come across an interesting "issue" recently. Here at work we are beta testing our Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit. There's something that is very quirky about the way items are dragged onto a script files.
Some background into the issue. We use a custom script to submit data in the form of an excel sheet into a database. The script is a .hta file. Under Windows XP and Windows 7 32bit, we were able to just drag and drop the excel file onto the .hta, and it would run the .hta script and format/submit the excel file to our database. Under Windows 7 64bit, when you drag it over the .hta file, it just gives you a red x, and won't allow you to drop it.
Anybody knows if there's a security setting, or an option/registry setting to regain this functionality?
