Stop Windows 7 Reassigning (and Half-hiding) Folders

Stop Windows 7 assigning my folders to its own special ones
This is a year-old Windows 7 Pro PC that gets very heavy home office use. Just yesterday I noticed that 2 top-level folders I created long ago no longer appear in the Explorer view of folders under C:.
In each case, if I explicitly enter the folder's path in the address bar (or the Run dialog), the folder content displays, but the address bar reads, for example, Computer - OS (C) - My Pictures. (The title bar shows the path, but the address bar is beating its own drum.) Another folder has now suddenly been declared My Music. And while these folders do contain lots of pictures and music, respectively, they have other stuff in them too, and I don't want Windows to apply its heavy-handed classifications. Strangest thing is, I'm certain the My Pictures and My Music folders were located elsewhere until yesterday.
If I go up one level from either folder (to C), the folder's name & icon are not shown in the list of other top-level folders. That is, I can't cursor down to it and hit Enter to open, as I can with dozens of others.
I've never used, nor liked being cajoled into using, Microsoft's array of "My XXXX" folders, nor am I partial to the recently birthed "libraries" concept. I have my own carefully designed folder hierarchy, and must work in it at great speed, so short paths and quick keyboard access are critical. I deliberately name certain folders toward the top of the alphabet, so scrolling down to the 'My's -- even if I were to accept these involuntary relocations
This only just started, and I can't figure out what provoked it. Is there a setting that governs this that can be disabled? If it's a new "feature" added in an update, I see it as inexcusably intrusive.

I was wondering if there are any possible things I could do to get windows 7 to hide files and folders that start with the character "." (you know like Linux).
I find many windows programs create files that are not hidden but start with ".", and while tecnically this is a problem with the program, almost all of them do this so it would be very nice if windows handled this correctly.

I notice when I save my edited video to my video folder they will show along with all the video icon blank pages usully title after what i named the video along with 'Index File" 'AVI.Index File' or a 'SCN File'. Im sure they are important but they sure clutter up the folder. Is there a way to hide these kinds of files or documents?

Maybe I'm just over thinking here, but say you hide a file, sure you can access it through changing the folder options from show to do not show. So whats the point of hiding stuff unless you're hiding it from someone who is a novice at windows 7. My main goal here, is to have a folder, which is password protected, and have it filled with things that can not be accessed through any means other than entering the correct password and therefore entering the folder. I basically want it to be completely impossible for someone to access the contents of the folder without the password.

For reasons I had to reinstall windows. I have to drives, a SSD and a HDD. The ssd got wiped but the HDD is still as it used to be. I have done with junctions so that programfiles, users and programdata are all on the HDD instead of the system drive SSD. Everything would be nice and dandy if I would still have the same C:Users*username* as before, but for some reason i now have C:users*username.username-pc.000* The -pc.000 came with the new installation and i do not need nor want it. Is there a way to make my computer think that C:users*username* is my userfolder?

First I hope this is the right place to post this question.I am web developer and as such this means I use the FTP abilities of Windows a lot. For the sake of speed I need to stop it form indexing an FTP folder every time I click on it. It's fine if it indexes it after I upload a huge number of files but after the initial upload tons of small changes usually are made to one or two files at a time. And it's not horrible if I am in my office to have to wait and extra couple seconds to upload a new changes. But, as quite often I may not be in my office (at clients location), I have to sometimes rely on slow and unstable connection and that re-indexing can take up to 15 seconds (possibly more) and it gets down right annoying when there is no need for it to be re-indexing the folder.I just recently bought a new laptop with Windows 7, prior to this I had a laptop running Windows XP and I preferred how it handles FTP over Windows 7. So can I get Windows 7 FTP to work more like the Windows XP FTP?

I can do it with a dual boot of two different XP installs, but Windows 7 and XP is eluding me.
It's easier if I just tell you the end result of what I want things to look like; then maybe someone will know how to accomplish it. I have a laptop that currently has Windows XP (installed first) and Windows 7 (installed second) as a dual boot configuration.
What I want is to completely (temporarily) eliminate the boot menu. I don't want to just "limit it to 0 seconds" or anything like that -- I literally want to eliminate the boot menu. I want it so that when you boot the laptop, it boots Windows XP every time.
However, there should be "some method" to restore the boot menu - preferably by running a batch file in Windows XP. After you boot to XP, you can run this batch file, then reboot the computer, you'd get the boot menu and have the option of choosing Windows 7.
Once in Windows 7, you should be able to run a similar batch file to remove the boot menu again - so that when you restart the computer, it once again reverts to just booting to XP and doesn't display any menu, until you run the XP batch file again.
In XP I would have been able to do this with a batch file that rewrites boot.ini but since Windows 7 doesn't use boot.ini I don't know how to accomplish this from the Windows 7 side.
Also, let me clarify that I don't much care if the OS's can "see" each other -- I don't need to hide the drives -- I just don't want the boot menu to appear, basically making it "appear" that the system only has a single OS unless you are "in the know."

recently I've been noticing Windows 7 doesn't even automatically check all the updates it claims are important. Yes, I have it set to install Windows Updates automatically, but this would still prompt me to "start" the updates.I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my having Microsoft Office 2003 (the 2003 version of MS Word, Excel, PPT, etc.) but, that's not an excuse. They're prompting me to install updates for my software they're JUST releasing, and yet they fail seemingly almost every time? Do they even test the sh!t they release to the public? And how come sometimes they'll install if I manually do it myself as opposed to when I try doing it automatically? Why should it be any different?

Just purchased a sandisk 64gb microsd. When I put it in, windows says it needs to be formatted. I went to format it as exfat but it only sees the drive as27gb. Same thing if I select ntfs. Is there something I am doing wrong or is this a faulty microsd card. If I use swissknife to look at the removable drives, it shows the drive as being 64GB and formatted already.

I'm looking for a program or something to get rid/hide my task bar (I still need to be able to get into the start menu though!). Currently I'm using taskbarelimator, but it sucks to say the least. I've tried multiple programs and haven't found anything real good with the exception of objectdock, it does really good job hiding but it takes a bit of resources compared to the alternatives. I heard about registry editing and I would be open to that if any one has any info on it.

I just turned on an almost new build pc to install windows 7. The entire pc is a new build except the hard drive that has a good copy of xp installed. I am trying to install a new copy of windows 7 on the hard drive. So I turned the pc on and go into the bios to set the DVD to boot first. So windows starts to install and the window is loading bar comes up. After the bar gets over half full, the screen drops and there is a line of h's on the left side of the screen and the installation freezes.

it is possible to stop certain file types from appearing in windows explorer?I'm using Sony Vegas which creates a .sfk file for every clip containing the waveform of any audio. The problem is it's making the folder full of 50+ clips too messy and I can't find the bits I need.I would just hide the files but then if I add more clips to the folder and then Vegas creates another .sfk it's not hidden.

I've noticed that when connecting to a router the host name of my computer is published, along with the mac address.
I am not getting in to mac spoofing here; that is not my intention. I simply generally do not like displaying more information than I must.
When dealing with public access routers (often that have no security and also default admin passwords) I would rather not display such information.
Using ubuntu, it was simple enough to not publish my host name (the mac address is of course still logged).

Ok, I just got a new Windows 7 Computer (yea! ). When I open up My Computer, it shows 4 "Removable Drives" (Which, I assume, are from my flash card reader, though there are no cards in them). They are hidden drives, but I set it so that it will show hidden files and folders.... I don't like all the clutter of the extra unneeded drives, so is there a way to hide individual drives?

So I want to hide an icon that is showing in my system tray. It's not really necessary to be there, and there is no option to not show it there. This is for a launch manager on a laptop. I've gone to customize and changed it to "hide icons and notifications" for this particular program, but it still shows. is there a way to get rid of this?

I've just installed Windows 7 64-bit on my desktop PC as it worked so well for the past month on my laptop I shrunk my Vista 64 partition and installed Win 7 x64 build 7000 on the new partition. All went smooth and well!
As I wanted to transfer some files and settings from my Vista install to my new Windows 7 I assigned a drive letter to my hidden Vista drive in the "Disk Management" utility and went on with my business. Now, as I'm done I'd like to hide my Vista partition again but I can't get it to work
When I select my Vista partition and select the "Change Drive Letter and Paths" and then press the "Remove" button I get the following error box:
"Windows cannot remove the drive letter of your volume. This may happen if your volume is a system or boot volume, or has page files."
My Vista volume is the first volume of the physical drive, the boot files is there but I don't have any page file on it. How come this drive could be hidden and revealed in the first place but not hidden again?

Just recently something has happened to change things like "one" to "Half-Two"; "there" to "Thor"; "mathematics" to "spelling"; and "Yours" to "Y'all's" or "you're" to "Y'all're". This happens on IE and Firefox and even happens the URL when I attempt to go to a mathematics website. The only thing I have done that I can think of that might possibly be involved is I downloaded jsMath v3.6 (Tex fonts) but I removed that and the problem is still there.

How can I hide the Autoplay dialog from the autorun.inf file? I have a USB with two partitions: A bootable linux partition (recognized as a fake CD drive by windows) and the normal "Removable disk" partition, where I can store my files.
When I plug in my USB into any computer, I get two autoplay dialogs, which is very annoying. Is there any line I can put in Autorun.inf to disable the Autoplay dialog on the CD partition?
I tried
Code: [Autorun]
UseAutoplay=0 but it didn't work.
This website lists all autorun commands:Autorun.inf Entries

Is there a way to hide a program that is running in the system tray, or possibly change the icon of the program in the system tray? I've tried changing the icon of the exe it self, and that did not work. Any other options/programs that allow this? I've tried a few programs to hide programs in system try, but none seem to work correctly on how I want. I want the program to still be running, but I dont want the icon showing up in the tray. I know that you can hide notification area through customizing the task bar, but thats not exactly what I want, unless I can change the icon of the program.
