Sound Very Loud With Headphones
May 15, 2009
I have volume set around 8% and for some reason it is way louder than on Vista. On Vista I usually have it around 22% when I use headphones. On Windows 7 RC it's extreme loud when I set it to 22%. Anyway to fix this? I tried everything in the sound properties.

This is a annoying loud continuous beeping sound. This happens after the boot diagnostics, at the point where windows should boot up. There is a cursor in the upper right corner, and that is all it does. This is a HP Pavilion Elite m9040n PC. It came with Windows Vista, and I am upgrading to Windows 7. I stupidly didn't run upgrade advisor, and am now regretting it.When I go to HP to find drivers, no Windows 7 drivers show up for this PC. Stupidly, again, I assumed this meant that they were packaged in with Windows 7.I don't think this is a hardware issue. It happens repeatedly at boot up, but when I put the installation CD in, the PC boots off the CD just fine. This probably doesn't eliminate any hard drive issues, but the PC wasn't showing any signs before, and the installation goes through without a hitch. Is this caused by not having compatible drivers? Are there computers that can't be upgraded? I do meet the minimum requirements. 2.4 Ghz, 3 GB Ram. What may I be missing?

I have installed a new Creative "Soundblaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro USB Audio System with THX SB1095" soundcard. I disabled the old on-board card. Note: It's USB. When I start-up, shutdown, sleep or wake, I get a very loud POP thru the speakers.I contacted Creative and they told me this is "normal" because Windows 7 is polling the USB input to see if there is anything connected. This doesn't sound right, because it happens when I shutdown or sleep, too! Why would Windows poll a usb input while shutting down or going to sleep?

I have Windows 7 64 bit and when I boot up windows without headphones plugged in, the sound works fine through the speakers but when I plug in the headphones they do not work. If I unplug the headphones, the sound starts coming out of the speakers. I have tried manually switching devices but that didn't work either and if I try to adjust volume the sound mixer crashes.
I just have integrated audio (device manager lists it as High Definition Audio Device and IDT High Definition Audio CODEC).
If I plug in the headphones and then start the laptop, the sound works fine through the headphones.
Any info on what may be going on?

I have Bluetooth headphones that I have been using with my desktop Windows 7 machine successfully for about one year. Now all the sudden without my having changed anything, I get no sound out of them. When I turn them on, Windows recognizes them and shows that they are connected, but when I play audio, the sound comes out of my desk speakers and not the headphones. The headphones work correctly with my laptop.

Sound does not want to play through my headphones. at all. I can listen to music through my headphones fine on ubuntu (dual-boot) so it is not the audio card, the headphones or the jack. I have tried re-installing the audio driver multiple times, as well as messing around with the settings in the sound controls, but nothing works. I have used both the dell.com audio drivers as well as the windows update audio drivers and they don't make a difference.

I have the following problem with new Compaq 515 with Windows 7: when headphones are connected to the headphone jack, the laptop speakers will not disable and headphones or external speakers woun't work. The laptop recognizes headphones (test sounds are coming through) and they can be used for communications, e.g. Skype. The laptop has IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver's latest version. Strangely, it is not possible to switch headphones as default device in control panel -> sound. The laptop has following options: Speakers/HP as default device and Headphones (RTC) appear as "Default Communications Device" when selected as default device. I'm not sure this is the problem but it seems strange enough

I have a laptop. When i open it in playback devices i have only the speakers. When i plug my headphones i hear everything from there with the playback devices only being the speakers. But, when i open certain programs like mumble a second playback device appears called Communications Headphones (IDT high definition audio CODEC). It doesnt matter if i have my headphones plugged. Then from the same program some sounds come out of the speakers and others from the headphones. How can i make everything to come out of my headphones or just make this second playback device disappear? Edit. I disabled and everything is fine now.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T510 with Windows 7 and have noticed the sound when using headphones it quite low. The same headphones playing the same sound on an older computer turned up all the way is extremely loud, but on this one, you can sometimes barely hear it. Even when using desktop speakers, turned up all the way, playing something in VLC media player with that sound up 400%, it is still sometimes hard to hear, and pretty much any video online, which I can't turn up to 400%, is too low to hear very well. Is this an issue with the sound card? Is there any way to amplify it?

I just got some surround sound headphones. When I restart my computer after having set my sound configuration for the headphones to 7.1 (supported by these headphones) the sound configuration will be at 5.1. I don't know what is causing it to keep going to 5.1.When the set up is at 7.1 the two rear speakers are enabled. This might seem small but I play battlefield 3 and being able to better hear enemies who are behind me willter and this is one of the reasons I got the headphones so I definitely prefer these two speakers to work.

Strange problem! I have some sounds that play through my speakers when headphones are plugged in. For example, if I run Skype, the Skype will play through the headphones (properly), but iTunes will play through speakers, as will anything else.
This also happens when playing Borderlands - I have to unplug and replug headphones to get it to go back!
What gives? How to fix this? I have IDT HDA as my sound card. Windows forced me to install NVIDIA HDA as well, so I have 2 sound drivers - NVIDIA HDA and IDT HDA AUDIO CODEC.

I have upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 week ago.I use audacity to record audio from stereo mix.But I am not able to record from stereo mix anymore since I upgraded to Windows 7.Because there is no sound coming from Stereo Mix,it used to work before I upgraded to windows 7,I have searched for solutions,tried installing virtual drivers etc. and it has nothing to do with audacity,I am sure that I have configured it right.I have few questions regarding this problem;
-Is there any way to fix the sound issue with Stereo Mix?
-If not,is there any way to record from headphones with audacity,or set headphones as a recording device?
-Any other ways to record audio I am hearing from my headphones with audacity?
I am using : Realtek High Definition Audio, driver version 6.0.1.5882

I think I remember reading somewhere that there is a way to make Windows 7 produce sound through both the optical cable and headphones simultaneously. (sound from the same source) But I can't remember where I read it or how to make it work.

I am working with Windows 7 on a Dell Optiplex 755, but teh issue is with the System Volume setting. When I go to the audio mixer and do the test and configuration, the SoundMax audio level is loud and clear. The problem is with the Windows system settings somewhere, is there a limiter or cap setting in teh registry that I can set to maximum? I know that it is not the standard slide bars/levels but somewhere that Windows 7 Professional is cutting the volume on any Windows application. The drivers are fine, if I invoke the card directly it will blast the sound out. But in any application it is too soft.

Originally, my speakers were not playing any sound, but when I plugged in my headphones, I could hear it. I tried going to Control Panel > Sounds and then chose my speakers to be the "Default device." Now, my speakers work, but when I plug in my headphones, the sound still plays through the speakers and not through the headphones. So basically, I think the problem is that the computer cannot switch between the two without me setting one to be the permanent default one.
I have an HP Pavilion dv2911us. Another interesting point to note is that the Quickplay strip doesn't seem to be working normally. When I press the mute button, it mutes the sound, but it doesn't turn red. This also happens when I try to adjust the volume. The volume changes, but the thing that pops up to show the current volume doesn't change.

My friend's laptop has a weird problem. It was running vista fine, sound worked and everything. One day, the internal speakers randomly stopped emitting any sound. However, they do make sound effect sounds while the computer is booting.I figured it was a software problem, so he just reformatted and installed 7. Same problem. Makes the booting up noises, "Gamers Republic... BOOM", obviously coming from the internal speakers.

For a while I got a bluescreen when inserting my headphones. I've fixed it by locking the computer and then inserting them. However, while I don't get a bluescreen, there's just this buzzing sound. It only comes from the left headphone and it's only when I try to play any sort of sound. And no, it's not the headphones because it comes out of the speaker as well and I've used these headphones earlier on my iPod.
I have an Inspiron 1545 that's about two years old with Windows 7 Home Premium.

When I'm in gaming sessions such as WoW, CoD and more even 8ball pool... the sound from headphones just "cut" and goes to speakers.
So while gaming it's alright but when the sound gets "Loud" it just stops working and I have to plug it again to work which is really irritating.

problem while playing the audio files(like mp3, wav...etc) with front panel headphones, the sound interrupting continuously (like 10 seconds sound-1 second mute-12 second sound-1 s mute-5 s sound-1 s mute) but there is no problem while playing video files. I opened the mixer from taskbar audio icon and saw the headphones device goes and comes cyclically while playing audio files.

All the drivers are working and windows is detecting everything just fine, I can even look under the volume adjustments and see the sound being produced. But I am getting no output to my speakers! I've read through a lot of forums and tried both xp and vista drivers along with the recommended 7 drivers, all work but I am getting no output through my integrated speakers.
I am running a Toshiba u205-5002 with a ACPI x86 motherboard and soundmax it just not working for me. I am at a loss of what to do. I don't get any program sounds whatsoever, no startup, nothing. All device managers say the devices are working properly and it detects the speakers just fine. I am also not getting any output to my headphone jack either. I am using the 32 bit 7000 build...
