May 13, 2011

Is there any way to create a shortcut to a non-existing target? create a new shortcut and in the "Target" field I enter a path to a non-existing target, then when I press 'OK' I get an error. The target cannot be found (of course). Is there any way to override this or solve it any other way. Anyone?

Can't Find Shortcut Target In Windows 7 X64 Home Premium

Aug 3, 2010

I want to set Windows 7 Home Premium x64 to open PowerPoint files in PowerPoint Viewer rather than OpenOffice (the current default program), but I can't find the location of the PowerPoint Viewer program file.

With a user administratior account, when I open a properties window for the shortcut icon and and go to the Shortcut tab, in the Target box there is no path to the target file. The target is said to be simply, "Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007 (English)". Ditto for all other shortcuts to Microsoft Office programs.

Shortcuts for other programs however (e.g. Calculator, Paint, OpenOffice, etc.) all display a pathname in the target box.

Save Target As In IE9 Not Accurately Saving?

Aug 5, 2012

I am downloading audiobook files from England onto a single-user system running Windows 7, 64-bit system and using Internet Explorer 9. When I do a "Save Target As" function to download a file, the source file is often much larger in Mb than the way it is when it becomes saved onto my computer. For ex:, the source file might be 41mb and the way I get it is perhaps 1900kb. WHY are the source and target so different? Also, how do I get my files to show as Mb as the Target ones do instead of being in kb?

Selecting Backup Target Folder

Nov 15, 2009

I have a notebook running Windows 7 Professional, and it's set to back up via network to an external drive which is connected to a desktop running Home Premium.

On the notebook, when I'm selecting the backup target, it lets me choose a specific folder on the external drive. However, when I'm backing up the desktop directly to the external drive, the only choice is the root of the external drive.

I'd like to specify a folder into which the desktop can back up instead. Can this be done, or am I going to have to pop for another Professional anytime upgrade?

Moving Documents Renames Target Folder Itself?

Nov 10, 2011

I want to move the My Documents onto a separate partition, which appears very straightforward in 7.

However, the first time I called the partition (as that was all it was going to be used for) 'My Documents' and just wanted to move the sub folders there.

Unfortunately, having moved the first item 'Desktop', the partition itself became 'Desktop' and behaved like that folder. The only way I could get it back was by creating other users and deleting the initial profile.

Subsequenty, every time I try to move 'My Documents', the folder selected is renamed by Windows to whatever folder I'm moving and the path afterwards reflects that, irrespective of my instruction.

i.e. I want to move 'My Documents' so create a folder called 'Information' (either before or during the move dialogue makes no difference. I confirm the notification to move files and receive confirmation of success.

Bizarrely, the new folder, previously 'Information', is now called 'My Documents'.

How To Create Shortcut 'SED' Instead Of 'SED.exe - Shortcut'

Feb 17, 2011

I often have to create Shortcuts to executable code. I used Shortcut Extension - Remove or Restore to get Code: SED.exe instead of the Windows 7 default Code: SED.exe - Shortcut as name of the newly created shortcut.

But I would prefer to have just 'SED'. Any way to do this automatically?

I think it might matter that I do not hide extensions ['Hide extensions for known files' (Option in Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options... -> View)].

Cannot Get Win 7 To See Existing Network XP PCs

Dec 5, 2009

I have a new Win 7 PC. I have an existing two XP PC home network. The existing network successfully shares files and a printer. Integrating the new Win 7 PC into my network, I have been half successful. I have internet access through the existing router on all three PCs and I have printer access on all three PCs since moving the printer to the Win 7 machine. Both XPs can see the Win 7 machine on the network.

This is where things go off the rails for me though. The Win 7 machine cannot see anything in its network except itself and the router. Keep in mind that certain apps can see back and forth. Windows Easy Transfer was able to see my XP machine from the Win 7 machine and move all my files over just fine. Norton NIS 2009 can see all 3 PCs from all 3 PCs and interact with each perfectly fine.

Likewise, the XP PCs aren't quite there yet either. They alternate between having 100% access to the Win 7 public USERS share and having no access at all - with no changes being made to the setting. Currently it is not accessible and I might not have permission to use this network resource. Interestingly with the XP to Win 7 connection fails, it fails on both XP computers at the same time. Either both work just fine or neither works at all.

All three PCs are in the same workgroup. All three have the same user account names and passwords. In Win 7, Network discovery is on along with all the other Advance Network Sharing features. I am currently sharing the Win 7 shares with Everyone. I have tried shutting the firewall off and leaving it on. All three are set at Full Trust for NIS 2009.

Note that all the XP computers are using the NetBIOS protocol; TCP/IP is not selected.

Use Existing User Folder

Apr 23, 2012

I have my pc set up with an SSD and a 1TB hard drive. I recently had a power outage which corrupted Bootmgr on SSD so I had to reinstall Windows 7. I had all users and programs set up under the 1TB hard drive since I just used the SSD as a boot drive. I still have my old user folder on the 1TB hard drive. Is there a way to create a new user on this new installation of Windows and link it back to my old user folder on the 1TB hard drive? I've already tried going under Registry: HKey_Local_Machine in the ProfileList and manually changing the ProfileImagePath for a new user account. But, it just caused the system to use a temporary account when logged in. It never used the path I wanted it too.

Should i do a system restore prior to that installation or am i ok and have the latest version of directx? I want to have directx11 support in most of my games.

Search Isn't Finding Some Existing Files

Feb 5, 2011

I have a program called BigJig, which has jigsaw files (.jg6) and my saved completed/part-done jigsaws (.sv8) files. When I had XP I always saved the .sv8 to the same folder the .jg6 was in.. Then Vista started dumping them somewhere else, despite the fact that I would tell BigJig to save to the folder I wanted them in. I finally found them.. I think they were in some user profile in application data or something. Should have moved them then, but I didn't. Well, now that I've upgraded to 7, they re back to sving where I want them, but I cannot find the ones Vista dumped in the wrong place anywhere.. search does not find any of the files, neither the .jg6 nor the .sv8, even though they are there, I can see them inBigJig, open them, mess with them etc. But some of them are in the wrong folders, and so, because I can't find them, I can't move them to where I want them to be.. if that makes sense. BigJig doesn't have a 'save as' option, so I can't save them to the right place and delete the wrong one.. I need to move them in windows explorer or my computer, but until i can find them I can't fix their locations. How can I find the actual location of these files?

Existing Folders Get Auto-renamed

Jul 19, 2010

I had just fully patched yesterday btw, before this occurred.

I created a folder on my desktop, say it was called "temp". I dragged some files into it. I created another folder on my desktop, and named it "whatever". The previous folder, "temp" now renamed itself "whatever (1)" (might have ended in (2), whatever convention Windows uses for auto-renaming)

So I renamed the original folder to "temp".

Likewise when I added a third folder bearing a different name, the first two that I had created this session were auto-renamed to become copies of my new folder name, with number suffixes on them.

Existing Hard Drive On New Motherboard?

Dec 28, 2012

I am planning to replace my motherboard and memory on my Win 7 Home premium 64b. I've been updating MBs for 25 years and now I am getting conflicting answers regarding booting existing hard drive on new MB. My present Win 7 installation was installed on my present MB. Before I have always been able to use an existing hard drive and OS on a new MB.Now when I asked Gigabyte if a reinstall would be required they said no, but the registry may be full of unneeded drivers etc which would affect performance. This seems a solvable issue using registry cleaners and editors. But I am also getting opinions that Win 7 will not boot up on a new MB and reinstall OS would be required. Considering the number of programs, some on disks others from downloads. activation keys etc, this is a major problem.
