Windows 7 Shell Common DLL?
Dec 5, 2009I have been getting Windows Shell Common DLL crashes when accessing and modifying properties in my Sound Panel. (I recently connected my SPDIF out to my receiver;I've also been having trouble getting my headphones to work again, but that's another problem) It's shown up in my Reliability Monitor and I've had the "Critical Event" "Windows Shell Common Dll" "Stopped Working" and it has reduced my reliability score from 10 to about 2. When I "Check for a solution" it says there aren't any available. I've checked all drivers and they are up to date. Any idea how to fix this? I've done alot of searching, and all i could find was one guy dl'ing a new SFComm64.dll file and replacing it in his system, which he said worked, but Windows 7 saw as a security threat (?). So, I'm not quite sure what to do - do I try and dl a new SFComm64.dll file? And if so, where do I dl from?

Jan 2, 2012I installed Battlefield 3 right after Christmas and just today noticed that I was unable to access my mouse settings via Control Panel. I know that this is a small issue but I'm concerned that it might continue to grow. As I have updated a number of drivers and other programs since then I am reluctant to hit the restore button and loose half a day of work. Can I simply "repair" Windows shell and go on?I ran (as administrator) sfc/scannow and if found no integrity errors. I also ran Control Panel / Action Center / Maint / Review Reliability and found no issues

Open With Using The Windows 7 Shell Common File?
Apr 1, 2012I had a file that had that open with format, I mistakenly changed it to a Windows Media Player format, and now can not change it back.I was thinking that I may have to reinstall the shell32.dll itself, but I saw the file on my computer. So maybe I should just find it in the Browse folder directory, then click okay and it's fix. Not sure completely where it is located or if that will work.

i have this win 7 system listed above, BUT, i just loaded the win XP mode (shell) virtual PC program yesterday and made it work fine. i even loaded the norton and firefox, just fine. Today i went to use it and the first thing i went to do was change my original dorky password. in the 'change password' window, i typed my old password and then hit 'enter', which i thought would make the password into a 'blank' enter key.

Dec 21, 2009I have set up custom paths for the shell folders in Windows 7. It works like it's supposed to except for one small detail. The system creates the folders "Pictures" and "Videos" in the default path (C:UsersUsername). As I mentioned I already have "My Pictures" and "My Videos" at another drive, so these folders shouldn't be there but when I try to delete them the system re-creates them. If I try to delete them again I get an error message stating I don't have permission to remove the folder, and if I try to open it it says "Access denied".

Oct 16, 2009I have a number of PCs connecting to a server where we house our personal folders. The server also houses music, basketball games, our photos, applications (like drivers and updates etc). On XP and vista I could update shell folders in registry to point each of the various locations (Like My Videos, My Documents, My Pictures etc), to a location on the server.
I updated the shell folder locations in registry only to find that it says location is unsupported because the network locations are not indexed
I have turned indexing off because it is a total waste of resources. We have everything stored on separate drives by category of item. For us, sedarching is not required, stuff is easy to find.
So how can I point the shell folders to a network location without turning on indexing?
Windows Kernel-Power Error On New PC?
Jan 14, 2012I just built a new computer about 2 weeks ago, and everything seemed fine until recently. I started getting "Kernel-Power" errors, usually when I play Star Wars, the old republic, there is no BSoD instead what happens is that I am doing everything normally, and suddenly i get this streak of multicolored pixels across a black screen and the pc restarts.
My Computer specs are:
500w Corsair PSU.
Sapphire Radeon 6850
i5-2500k
OCZ 60gb SSD
16gb ripjaws DDR3
Asus P8Z68-V LE mobo.
I have the latest bios on my motherboard, Microsoft Security essentials returns clean, no minidump is created even though I have it on.
Also I'm running Prime95 on my pc right now and have been for the past hour, but I can't recreate the error that way.

Feb 11, 2013I wanted to have this searchable in case others have come across the same problem. This problem occurs when you try to install certain programs. I tried all of these fixes, but I'll label the one that worked for me. (I will only show the fixes I tried which have been confirmed to work for others). My operating system is a Windows 7 64 bit.
1. Create a new administrator account, log on to that account, then run the installer from that account. (this is what worked for me. )(Simply running the installer as an administrator account from my normal account did not work)
2. Go to the command prompt (by clicking the windows logo/start and typing cmd ),then type regedit inside the command prompt and press enter. Browse to the location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER --> Software --> Microsoft --> Windows -->Current Version --> Explorer --> User Shell Folders. Click to highlight the Recent key, then click File, export. Save the file (but remember where you saved it to). Go back to the registry editer, right click Recent and click delete. Restart your computer and try the installation again. (please take care when you're in the registry editer, deleting the wrong thing could lead to:.(If this one did not work, go back to User Shell Folders inside the registry editor, click a blank area inside the right pane, click File, import, and choose the Recent key you exported earlier. This will put the key back in your registry.)
3. Boot up in safe mode with networking ( to do this, start up your computer and press F8 like a madman before the windows logo appears on the screen.) and try to run the installer as an administrator.
