Set Up A Dual Ethernet Card Internet Sharing With HT Receiver?

Nov 27, 2011

When building my Hifi mancave, I was smart enough to wire it for Cat6, etc, but not smart enough to put a few lines of cat 6 into my HTPC jack. So I only have 1 cat6 line into my computer area. My new receiver (Onkyo TX-NR809) has a ethernet port in it, which enables internet radio, media sharing, playing, firmware updating, etc. Being a techy guy I got another netcard and put it in my computer and I want to share internet to the receiver via LAN2.

I've been scouring the internet trying to figure out how to do this with Windows 7x64 to whatever system (probably linux based?). I've seen how to do it with Windows 7&XP, XP&XP, Windows 7&7 linux & Windows, and they all use some sort of "brige internet connection" or something like that, which doesn't apply to my situation. Will someone just tell me what IP stuffs to use for the following:

Sharing Wifi Internet Via Ethernet

Dec 20, 2009

I've got two computers in my room: a Toshiba laptop and a desktop computer (both running Windows 7) I built a few months ago. The laptop gets great wifi reception, 4/5 bars, while the desktop struggles to get one bar. I want to connect the laptop to the PC via Ethernet and use the laptop's Internet connection. I'm having troubles doing this.

Here's what I've done thus far:Disabled the desktops wifi. Enabled "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" on the laptop's Ethernet card. Plugged in the cable.

This is where I hit the brick wall. On both computers, it comes up as "unidentified network". I try creating a homegroup on the desktop, but I encounter an error "Windows could not set the network settings" and "You can try to change this setting later in the Network and Sharing Center." I look in the Network and Sharing Center, and it says "Homegroup: Joined" as if no error occurred at all. So I try to join the homegroup on the laptop. It says "Larry from LARRY-PC has created a homegroup" so it recognizes it, but then it says "Windows could not setup a homegroup on this computer" when I try to put in the password.

I start the HomeGroup Troubleshooter, and it troubleshoots network problems. After that, it says "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration: Fixed" So then I try joining it again, and get the same issue. I go through the HomeGroup Troubleshooter again, and I click "the problem is not fixed" and get a list of problems I don't have.

What can I do?

Use Ethernet For Plain File Sharing And Not ICS?

Sep 3, 2009

i been using my router for network sharing but its limited to 100mbit, so i want to take advantage of my giglan's on either setups. i went and bought a cat5e crossover cable today, but i am doing my head in trying to get the setup working.

network & sharing centre shows the internet connection on port 1 (modem router) with home group joined but port 2 (crossover cable) is showing up as unidentified network.

i only want the crossover cable to share the network not the internet, so no ICS. just plain old file transferring is what im after but with gigalan speeds. im running x64 7600 on both pc's, my main rig is in my specs and the other is my spare parts (e8400,xfx 790i ultra ect) that i whacked together as a HTPC.

so is there a way to use ethernet for plain file sharing and not ICS?

p.s. sorry if this has been posted b4 but my bandwidth is over and am down to 7kbps so its very painful loading a single webpage.

Dual Boot (XP / Windows 7) Data Sharing

Apr 22, 2011

My computer is set up to dual boot WinXP and Windows 7, mostly for gaming compatibility purposes, but I love both OS equally to be honest. I'm trying to make both operating systems basically store and retrieve as much data from the same places as possible without destroying anything. For example, this is what I did so far...

- All drive letters are identical in both OS, to ensure maximum compatibility if running the same program on either OS.

- I have a shared Program Files folder which contains any programs that both OS can run and aren't entirely dependent on the correct registry keys on my "shared" hard drive, separate from my dual partitioned with the operating systems. Also on this drive is where I install my games and just about anything else both OS will use.

- Both OS use most of the same User's folder. I consider 7 my 'main OS', so my XP installation uses Windows 7's Documents, Music, Downloads, Favorites, and Videos folder, as well as a couple other of the personal settings folder. This works great for my games, both OS share most of my save game files so I can load a game in either OS and there's my progress.

So far everything is working great, but I want to take one final leap and I'm not sure of the effect, mostly because I'm not educated enough about program application data and what kinds of settings they store. Programs seem to store personal data in folders known as "Application Data" in XP and "AppData" in 7. From my understanding, this is pretty much how it goes... (XP Folder then Windows 7 Equivalent)

x:Documents and SettingsidApplication Data == x:UsersidAppDataRoaming
and
x:Documents and SettingsidLocal SettingsApplication Data == x:UsersidAppDataLocal

I know how to change where XP stores application data via the registry, what I'm wondering is will there be some kind of negative effect in doing so? Will it mess up my program data? This would be the last thing I can think of doing to minimize the amount of wasteful data stored between my operating systems. From what I'm seeing the programs I happened to install on both have exactly the same AppData in both folders.

Dual Lan - Forcing File Sharing To Use Faster Connection

Nov 18, 2009

I have 2 pcs on a LAN with a 100mbps switch, and they are also directly connected via Gigabit crossover. When both ran XP, I could uncheck "File and Printer Sharing" on each 100mbps connection, and they used only the direct crossover at 1gbps.

Now, with Windows 7 on one and XP on the other, copying files uses the switch by default, even with "File and Printer Sharing" unchecked. This is ridiculous. It should be able to see that there's a wide open connection that's ten times faster sitting completely idle. I even think that the "Local Area Network 2", not the primary.

Any ideas?

Ethernet Card Not Being Recognized

Feb 25, 2009

I installed the 7022 x86 version of Windows 7. Everything installed fine and there were driver issues which I anticipated but my Ethernet port is not working on Windows 7 or any other OS for that matter.

Its a very strange situation. After it was not seen I Windows 7 I booted from my 2nd drive which has Vista on it and it was not seen there so I booted from my XP drive and it was not seen on there either.....

I have re-downloaded all the drivers for each version of the OS but none are making the NIC discoverable.

I have an nVidia 680i SLi & I am using the on board port.

Sharing Internet Via USB

attempting to connect my 360 to the network to play online/stream NetFlix. The Univ. posted this PDF detailing how to connect a console to the network. I picked up a Belkin USB->Ethernet adapter from campus IT the other day and began to follow the guide. While enabling Internet Connection Sharing from my local connection, it kept getting an error stating "An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled. The dependency service or group failed to start. I checked it's dependencies, Remote Access Auto Connection Manager and Remote Access Connection Manager were set to "Automatic" but both bounced back with "Windows could not start the RA(A)CM service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

Internet Connection Sharing?

I am unable to share an internet connection between two computers in a homegroup.File sharing is OK. The ADSL modem is connected (via USB, no ethernet) to a desktop, the desktop to a laptop via a router. The problem is that after opening network/adapter settings/LAN/properties on the desktop, NO sharing tab appears, only a 'networking' tab. On the laptop both tabs appear...How can I get around this? I know I should really get a modem that connects directly to the route, but don't want to waste any time/money if it doesn't resolve the problem

Sharing A Printer Over The Internet?

May 19, 2012

I've spent the last day running in circles trying to find a simple solution. I have two Win 7 machines located a few hundred miles apart. I currently have computer A (Local) connecting to computer B (remote) via UltraVNC. This works perfect except, when printing documents, I need to print to my local printer, which means on my remote machine I need to add a printer that is physically here locally. I've looked at IIS, IPP, Google Cloud drive, another service which costs. I think IPP could be the answer, but I can't find any step-by-step style of instructions out there. I have a limited understanding of this stuff, so really looking for a detailed solution.

The bandwidth is there on the lan side to support a faster connection, but it keeps falling back to the internet even when a local computer is used for a VPN.

Can ISP Stop Internet Sharing

I've second computer(runs on xp) and is connected to my main computer via another Ethernet. The internet sharing ran fine for couple years till on a normal day it stopped just like that. I tried everything to make the sharing whole again but now it's been 6 months and I've pretty much given up. Second comp was formatted with fresh OS many times. On my main comp tried through W7 and W8 differently with different settings. I then followed dozens of tutorial which appeared on google's search. Still no success. I even tried setting up VPN between these two computers. On second comp, in control panel it says connected to broadband from main computer but in reality no internet app(browser, torrent client etc) find the internet. Other stuff such as file, printer sharing, lan based apps like multiplayer games are working fine.
