How To Remove Single OS From Dual Boot - Windows 7 And Win Server 2008

Nov 11, 2012

Tried tackling this one single-handedly to begin with and failed.

I have Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 installed as a dual boot, different partitions single HDD.

I want to remove the Windows 7 partition and keep the Win 2008. I do NOT want to lose anything from the Win 2008 partition. Taken from Disk Management.

Disk 3 with 5 partitions
1st - Healthy, Primary partition 73MB. (I thought this was system reserve but its not, leftover space from a previous partition change). It's currently mounted and completely empty.
2nd - Unallocated space 500mb
3rd - Windows 7 OS (Healthy - system, active, primary partition)
4th - Windows 2008 Server OS (Healthy - boot, page file, crash dump, primary partition)
5th - Unallocated space 8mb'ish

I haven't been using Windows 7 for years and want to clean this drives partitions up because it's messy and wasting space. I just need windows server 2008 as it's been used as a server for years and that's all I need it for now.

I want to safely remove the windows 7 installation and merge that partition along with the 1st and unallocated spaces back into a single partition where windows 2008 server resides.

Now I've tried tackling this myself and failed. I stupidly made the windows server 2008 partition as active which killed my boot and took me forever to repair with zero loss fortunately. Sadly it was as simple as using diskpart in a command prompt from win 2008 boot disk to make win 7 partition active again.

So, how do I do this? The boot manager must be on the win 7 partition as removing active killed it. The windows 7 boot (during startup) is long removed, system boots directly to windows 2008.

XP Mode As Server On Windows 7 Machine?

Apr 8, 2011

At work, I had a Windows XP PC with a static IP address, which was acting as a server, with 7 client PCs connected to it (also each with static IPs).

The server PC died, and the replacement is a Win7 machine, which I am in the process of setting up. I recently learned that the software we use does not work on Win7, so I've installed Windows Virtual PC and XP Mode. I also find that the company who provide the software are happy for me to try this, but they do not provide support for customers installing the software on an XP Mode virtual drive on a Win7 machine, so I've been pretty much left on my own to complete a test install.

I'm almost there with getting all the software installed and stuff, but I have a question with regard to the IP addresses. At present the Win7 machine has the same IP that the old server PC had, and the XP Mode virtual drive has a DHCP "obtain automatically" IP address, but with the DNS server set to the IP address of the router. This works in terms of both the Win7 PC and the XP Mode having network (internet) access.

However, is this correct for when I start up the software and re-connect the client PCs? I have a feeling that as the XP Mode virtual drive is acting as the server, it should be this that has the server IP address, not the the Win7 PC itself. But if so, then what should I set the IP address of the Win7 machine as? DHCP? Another address in the IP range?

I initially tried giving the XP Mode a (different) static IP, but it failed to connect to the internet. I believe I need to do something with "IP bridging" to get this to work?

32 Bit Windows 7 On A 64 Bit Machine For Server Access?

Aug 22, 2011

I have a 64bit machine currently running Win 7 64bit. Unfortunately, a client I work for has a 32bit server which I cannot access from my 64bit installation.A few questions here really:1. If I install a 32bit version of windows 7 on a partitioned part of my HD and dual boot will this mean that my machine runs in 32bit mode allowing me to access the 32bit server?2. If so, can I then run the 32bit installation through virtualbox (or similar) and get the same result?3. Is there a more simpler mechanism to solve this issue that I have overlooked?

How To Virtualize W2K8 Server On A Windows 7 Pro 64-bit Machine

Sep 6, 2011

I want to try out Windows Server 2008 (preferably r2 - but it can just be W2K8). I would like to run it in a virtual machine on my 64-bit Windows 7 professional installation. I know that my Virtual PC will not run the 64-bit version of the W2K8. It appears that to run r2 I must already have a W2K8 to install it on top of. recommend the best scenarios to virtualize...

windows server 2008 r2 (on win7pro)and windows server 2008 (on win7pro) Which virtualization solution do you recommend I use.

Finally, if I am running W2K8 server on a VM on win7pro, and inside that W2K8 VM I install W2K8 Server r2...... is this even a feasible solution? (Gut tells me no, too slow)...

Running Single Graphics Card From Second PCIe

Jul 4, 2012

I asked yesterday about running my graphics card from the second PCIe slot for purely visual reasons after deciding that the speed decrease would be negligible if any. I tried to start the computer with the video card in the second PCIe slot (PCIe 3.0, 8x), but I got no video signal to my screen with both the motherboard output and the video card output. Is it actually possible to run a single graphics card out of a PCIe slot which isn't the primary one?

Using Hardware Resources When Running Windows XP Mode Virtual Machine?

Jan 5, 2011

At my work we are in the process of upgrading our network from server 2003 and xp on the clients to server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 on the clients. We have some productivity software that will not run on windows 7 64 bit so we have installed the XP mode virtual machine in order to run that software. The software installs fine and runs fine. The problem we are having is some of the software is used to program PLC's and so we need to be able to talk with these devices over the network at their IP addresses. I have configured the "virtual" ethernet adapter and windows 7 ethernet adapter the same. From the cmd prompt in win 7 i can obviously ping the devices and communicate with anything on the network however when I am running the XP mode I cannot access anything on the network. The virtual mode isnt recognizing any of the physical computers resources. Is there a way to make it so when running XP mode and the programs in XP mode the computer can communicate with other devices over the network?

File Sharing Between Windows 7 Laptop And Windows NT Server 4.0 Machine

Sep 15, 2010

I am trying to connect my Windows 7 laptop with a computer running Windows NT Server 4.0 through a 8 port hub using network cables for file sharing. I changed the IP address, subnet mask of my laptop to suit the IP address of the NT machine and could ping the computer from laptop and vice-versa. But when I try doing 'Run' -> \(IP address of computer with NT) it asks me enter a Network password and it does not accept any User id or password. I tried various solutions going through various forums like

1. Truning the firewall off

2. NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled

3. Creating a user account in the computer with NT with a same user id as the one on laptop with Windows 7

4. Logging in both the systems as administrator and without a password.
