A windows.old folder was created, but I can't open the office 2003 applications (excel, word, powerpoint, etc.) Office 2003 came installed with my computer (Vista Home Premium), and it is NOT a trial version.
Everytime I try it to open any microsoft office app, the computer gives me this message:
"The Operating System is not presently configured to run this application".
I want to reinstall the program that I used in vista previously. I tried using the magical jelly bean application. When I run magical jelly bean, I only get the cd-key for Windows 7 and nothing else.
How do I retrieve the cd keys from the windows.old file?

I installed a software called ultraEdit on my windows 7 machine, but then after uninstalling it my text documents no longer use Notepad as the default program to open. I tried changing the default program that text documents open with, but it is not letting me
I right click a file then click on "open with" then accidentally click notepad. What happen now is, the icons of my other files change to notepad and cannot open. The files now have a file extension of .lnk. My question is how can I restore my file back to its original or default form.
I have an ongoing problem with using Emacs on a Windows 7 machine. When I edit a .bat file and save the file, Emacs updates the registry with an association to 'open' .bat files with the Emacs editor. Batch files then fail to run properly, as they get open with Emacs rather then simply being run by a Command prompt window.
Its quite a bother, since I continually ahve to edit my registry to fix this automatic file association. Anyone know of a way to lock file associations for .bat files, or disable automatic registry updates by programs like Emacs or Notepad?
I have downloaded a small file that is supposed to make a few changes to the Windows Registry. My problem is that a number of folders are locked, since I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7.This little "take ownership" registry file looks fine, there is a tutorial attached, etc. but my problem is that the file does not get merged into the Registry. The file gets opened in Notepad. and that is all..I need help how to let the Merge function work and the opening of the file in Notepad to be avoided.
I had a document I was working on and for one reason or another, my computer was restarted unwillingly. Anyway, once my computer had restarted and I opened MS office word 2010 I noticed the recovery panel contained my document along with several others , however without thinking I clicked on the down arrow and accidentally chose 'don't save'. The file was sent to the recycle bin after this point and given a computer generated filename starting with 'wr' and I restored the item, although when I restored the file I was not able to determine where its new location might be.
When our users log off one of our departmental images, and they haven't saved their work in Word, as the machine logs off, they are asked if they want to save their work (as I would expect), but rather than being given the opportunity to say "yes", Word is instead just closed down, and the machine logs off.
Usually, I would expect it to wait a moment, then show the "waiting for programs to close" black window. This is what I want - but I'm not given that option - the system just logs off, and any unsaved work is lost!
Now - I know - the obvious answer is to tell the users to save the damn work before they log off - however, the users are kids, and worse, teaching staff... so asking them to do anything sensible is a bit of a waste of time!!!
I've looked at the "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" in the registry, and have tried increasing the timeout to 30 seconds, but it appears to make no difference at all.
I try to save a txt file with hebrew in it, I get:I CAN save files with hebrew titles, and doc (word) files with hebrew in them. Only Notepad plus hebrew content doesn't work.
I am having a terrible time saving and then being able to open up files that I need. Can someone help me to understand how this works with Window 7, please.
My old computer was on its last leg and so I went in to Geek squad so that they could back up most of my files, journal and my resume. Now that I have a new computer w/ Win 7, I tried to retrieve my resume from MS works and was unable to do so. Prompt came up to open tasks and go into History, but my resume is not listed. Can some one please help me retrieve my resume? They used Roxio software and so I have 2 discs
apparently, the 300 GB of files from my previous OS are still on my harddrive, but I cannot find them. Yes, I'm missing the 300 GB on my HD when I click My Computer, but they're not in this fabled windows.old folder that allegedly has them. I've even used TuneUp Utilities to detect where the data is on my computer, and it can't find them. Bizarre. So, what's taking up all that memory, and, more importantly, how do I get to it?
Im attempting to retrieve my data on my old hard drive. I have an external usb sata connector. When I attempted to open the drive I was given this message : "G: is not accessible. Access is denied." After looking around the web, I tried to take ownership of it but I have not prevailed in accessing the hard drive.
My motherboard crapped out on my HP dv6000 a week ago and so I decided it was time to upgrade. I just ordered a new dell latitude e6410 so I'm really excited!
Anyway, my dv6000 will not charge and is completely dead. I am trying to figure out the easiest and most economically sound way to get everything off my hard drive and on to my new machine.
why I wouldn't be able to save a .txt or an 'all files' document in Notepad? I don't get any errors or anything, just no response when I hit the 'save' button. I'm running a Dell Inspiron laptop, about seven months old and have all the latest service packs and such.
I just got Windows 7 recently. Was trying to open an old .txt file and the file could only be viewed as the tiny thumbnail at the bottom. My glasses may need to be changed but I don't think anyone can read that small!! You can visually see notepad opening a new window and flying to the right edge of the screen as it maximizes and completely disappears
Well today i was trying to open something with java binary, and i didnt have it anymore for some reason, maybe becaues I got Java 64 bit, but ya, then I clicked notepad, and not I cant fix it?
