Resolution Error Booting Second Machine

Oct 28, 2009

OK after a few boots and trying different methods I can clearly now see an issue that was not present in XP or Vista.

I have two machines linked using a basic KVM. What happens is that if I am not monitoring the bootup of a machine then the resolution at boot up changes.

On one machine I have two GPU and run four monitors. If I boot this machine while switched over to the other machine then all the icons from the monitor that I use to view the other machine are moved to my main monitor in the set. If I decide to boot the second machine, which only uses the one monitor, while looking at the other machine then when I switch over the resolution has been reduced to the windows setup default.

I have booted both machines and monitored them doing so and all is fine. But when I am not monitoring them boot then I have this issue with the monitor not being recognised, even though XP and Vista was able to do so at boot time.

Does anyone have any ideas on how the monitor configuration can be saves and read during boot if the monitors are not currently active on the booting machine?

Virtual Machine Screen Resolution Issue

Nov 15, 2009

I was wondering if you could help me with a computer problem that I have. I like to play a really old DOS game called Championship Manager 9798. This was only compatible with Win 98 & you'd to reboot the machine in DOS mode to play it. When XP came out, I was able to play this through a DOS box. When Vista came out, I was then able to play it with a virtual machine, with Win 98 as the operating system. I could make the screen go full size by pressing Alt+Enter &this was on a Dell wide screen monitor, & everything ran fine.

My problem is that I have just bought an HP wide screen laptop. The Virtual machine runs, but when I press Alt+Enter, it goes full screen, but there are two black bands about an inch wide down the side of the screen, meaning that the game is only about half of the screen in width.
Is there anything that you can think of that can be done? I’ve tried the Internet to see if there's anything, but all it says is that Virtual Machines aren't with wide screens. I’m confused with this, as it works on my wide screen monitor (with my PC), or are there different variations of “wide screen”?

Someone suggested RDP onto the virtual machine, which you cant do with Win 98. SO Ive tried to go back to getting the game to work via DOS box on an XP virtual machine. I managed this, but when I RDP onto it, all you see is a small DOS icon in the middle of the screen, so Im totally stuck & would give my right arm if you could get it to work properly on my laptop.

Windows 7 (64) Machine Not Booting?

Jun 6, 2011

Have had a string of problems pop up over the course of the week. First thing that happened was that I had an error window pop up stating that there was a hiccup with a hard drive (don't have the details of error). Desktop rebooted and system started up fine but then noticed that most desktop icons were missing and program listings were missing from STARTUP.Friday night got a malware for WIN 7 Antivirus Software.I used Spybot to clean the system. Back to normal now but Sat morning while looking at video on MSN screen went black and system rebooted. Next came grey window stating that system files could not be found to start up.

Tried restoring last good setting but still not bootable. Noticed in windows error report that Win 7 was on (F:). Got into DOS mode and discovered my drive C: is now drive F: all other HDs are correct. Current C: is blank no file or directories.

Virtual Machine Booting From A Network Location

Oct 8, 2009

I am looking at a solution to tap into the portability of virtualization across hardware. i.e. if I have my development environment as a VM, I can access it and bring it up from any machine on the network. This will enable me to be not attached to any physical machine and allow me to access my development machine seamlessly from anywhere if it is stored in a network location. I have mainly two questions around such a setup.

1) Is there anyway of hosting the VM without incurring the expense of both the host operating system and the guest operating system? The only functionality of the host operating system to host the VM.

2) Is it viable from a performance stand point to have a VM booted up on a machine from a vhd placed at a network location?

Tried Booting In Low-resolution Mode And Safe Mode?

May 6, 2009

I have installed the RC build of Windows 7 as a second OS on the machine.I am finding it incredibly difficult to solve the display driver issue that I have. Currently in Device Manager my display adapter is listed as:Standard VGA Graphics AdapterI believe that, since this is occuring, any ATI graphics drivers that I try to install aren't recognising the x700 as my graphics card and so are failing to update any drivers. At the moment I'm stuck with the standard Windows display drivers which limit the resolution of the screen and disable graphics acceleration etc..If anyone has an idea of how to soI wondered whether it would have anything to do with updating chipset drivers etc...but since I've never had to do that before (and since I am still using XP on the laptop) I didn't want to start messing things up.

edit: I should add that, on my first install of Windows 7 I used Windows Update to install an 'ATI Technologies Inc. driver update for ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700' - once installed, after rebooting the screen was completely black and there was nothing I could do to get the picture back. I tried booting in low-resolution mode and safe mode but neither helped. I wondered whether it was because I had the screen set to the highest resolution possible before installing and rebooting the drivers.

Internet Time Failing - DNS Resolution Error

May 15, 2011

My internet time is failing with the following error:

"NtpClient was unable to set a manual peer to use as a time source because of DNS resolution error on ''.
NtpClient will try again in 3473457 minutes and double the reattempt interval thereafter. The error was: The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found. (0x80072AFC)

I assume either my ISP/router is the issue or something else strange is going on. I tried changing my DNS server to the google ones as well as adding a server to my hosts file but it still returns the same error. Just curious what exactly the message means if it really is DNS related as hard-coding the IP into the internet time requester returns the same error.

Sharing Folder From Windows 7 To XP Machine - Permissions Error

I can access my Public folder and my shared printer from my Windows 7 machine on my XP machine. I'm trying to share my Mp3 folder, thats on a secondary HDD in my Windows 7 machine.

Path being "E:StuffMp3z". No matter what I change as far as permissions, adding HomeGroupuser to the Advanced Sharing dialog...everything I've tried, my XP machine can see the share, but I get the ".......is not accessable. You may not have permissions...." error in XP trying to open the shared folder. And what's up with not having a folder icon with a Share symbol in Windows 7 so by looking in Explorer you can tell a folder is shared?

Display And Machine Randomly Freezes (No Error Messages Or BSOD)

Jun 28, 2012

I am experiencing issues with my ASUS graphics card and my Intel HD display driver. Whenever I am playing a videogame or doing something that is graphics intensive, my display freezes and I either have to reboot my machine or sometimes the display unfreezes and I am allowed to resume my activities. I originally had graphics driver 295.73, but I upgraded to version 296.10 when it came out. I still had the same issue when I upgraded my driver so I rolled back to version 295.73. I kept bouncing back and forth between the two drivers and I even tried going into safe mode to install the drivers. Twice while I was using AutoCAD and playing a videogame, the display became distorted and showed pixelated colors.

I installed the 301.24 driver when it came out on May 22nd, but the problem occurred again while I was playing a game and while I was in AutoCAD. In the rare instances that my display froze and unfroze, I received a windows notification from the windows event log stating that my driver 295.73, 296.10, or 301.24 failed. I have performed numerous diagnostics and stress tests using Ultimate Boot CD. My memory tests have checked out fine and so have my hdd and ssd tests. The only thing that sticks out is that my southbridge temperature, my CPUTIN according to HWMonitor, is at a constant 60 degrees. It never changes or fluctuates.

Connection Error After Dual Booting?

Oct 24, 2012

I am not 100% sure if i should be posting this here or not but ill just continue. Okay so i have a Dell infinion 15r-n5110 laptop. a couple days ago i dual booted up with fedora 17. i self partition the 1TB hd. i left the partition for windows 7 unscathed. ever since then windows 7 has not been able to ping my home broadband connection. i have personaly changed the DNS server to serveral addresses i have found on dozens of other forums but nothing helps me. i cant access a router to easy but i did at work finally today and even with the cable plugged in it will not ping in windows 7. however both wifi card and the wired connection work just fine in fedora. i am thinking its something to do with the boot processes not initalizing. i have downloaded and reinstalled the drivers off the intel website for the wifi netword device (Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 1030) and it still will not let me ping, i even went as so far as to turn off my firewall thinking it was a security issue and tryed to ping. still no luck. im hoping i have provided enough details and trial and errors for someone out there to give me something useful.

BSOD Booting, Error 0xC0000225

Mar 12, 2012

I got a dual boot with GRUB2, Arch Linux + Windows 7 Pro x64.Always used it with no problems, and now the Windows loader can't work.I only managed to read the status value, 0xC0000225, and something like "boot manager generic failure", "a required device is inaccessible".I tried using the repair function from my full retail dvd, but it didn't work as well. I think it's because it acted on the windows partition, while the windows boot is stored in another partition of about 100mb, wich was created automatically during the dvd installation. So I guess the solution would be giving to the repair function the right drivers to let it "see" the boot partition, but how?

My system specs:

Windows 7 Pro x64
Full Retail
The machine is a laptop, 1.5 years old
OS installed a few months ago

Not Booting (Disk Read Error)

Dec 25, 2009

Recently, I was messing around with my HDD's partitions in GParted. I resized my Windows 7 partition and made a new NTFS for Windows XP, and a new ext2 for Puppy Linux. I installed the GRUB Bootloader and all my partitions booted fine off of it except for Windows 7. I later found out this has something to do with the Master Boot Record and that I should install GRUB and then install Windows 7.

I was okay with this for a while, but Windows XP couldnt boot many applications from the Windows 7 partition because I have it's x64. I eventually realized that I hadn't made my Windows XP partition large enough (only 3 gig) for anything I wanted to do with it. After a few days, I just deleted the Windows XP and Puppy Linux partitions and was back to having just my Windows 7 partition. I was hoping everything would be magically better, but when I restarted my computer, the BIOS told me a "disk read error" had occurred and "press any key to restart".

I put in a Puppy Linux Live CD and opened up GParted again. GParted showed me that my HDD was now just one big block of Unallocated space. Then I looked in the lower-left corner of the screen and saw that I still had 4 partitions (sda1, sda2, sda3, sda4). sda1 is now my Windows 7 partition, sda2 is now my Windows XP partition, and for some reason sda3 and sda4 are both HP Recovery partitions.

I tried everything I could think of to save myself. I popped in the Windows 7 Upgrade Disk (I had been running Vista before) and tried the Recovery tools included with it, but the Recovery didn't recognize any partitions on my HDD at all. I ran a Command Prompt and tried all the options in bootrec fixmbr, but two of them didnt work and the other two replied "Element not found". Then I tried sfc /scannow, but that told me I had to be running Windows. I booted back into Puppy, ran GParted, and tried to make a new partition, but GParted told me that doing so would erase ALL data on the HDD. There's probably some more options I tried, but I can't remember them right now.

Can anyone help me out? I feel like I'm close to just backing up my personal files, wiping the HDD, and starting over. Only problem is I don't have anywhere to backup 150 gigs.

PC Not Booting Windows 7 Or Linux - I / O Error Message

Windows 7 not booting! I have a Medion Laptop and it froze so I forced it off. Now when I load it in any mode (safe mode freezes after avg file) It will go to a black screen or a 0xc0000009 I/O error message. I've run it in start up repair and there aren't any system restore points available and start up repair took 17 hours before I decided to turn it off! My hardware doesn't make any strange sounds and my bios recognises my Hard Drive. Luckily, there's nothing important on the laptop so I don't mind if we have to reset it to factory settings as I have the Windows 7 installation disc as well!

Not Booting After Resizing Partition, No Boot Error?

Nov 18, 2011

I had an empty 70 GB partition on the left of my computer and a 230 GB on the right side but I wanted to combine them. Windows was on the 230 GB partition. I booted GParted and combined them, it copied everything from the 230 GB partition over and resized it, it took a few hours.I assumed after it wouldn't boot and all I would have to do is pop in my Windows 7 install disc and go through the repair setup. At first I ran startup repair and it would say it found a problem, and I rebooted and still nothing.. After the bios loads and it lists my DVD drives I just get a cursor _ blinking, nothing else.. No BOOTMGR missing.Odd I thought, so I ran repair again, and again it found another problem. I did this several times before it said it could not detect a problem but it still would do the same thing.I opened the cmd prompt and issued the following commands

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildocd

I tried installing a second copy of Windows 7 on a 10 GB partition on the end, it went successfully but still blinking cursor. Theres a 54 MB partition at the beginning of type Primary, the main windows one is System and the test windows 7 partition is Primary as well. I thought the first one was usually 100 MB but maybe I am wrong.Still I am stuck with a blinking cursor?

Error Booting From Windows 7 Install Disk

May 30, 2011

I'm doing an upgrade from 32 bit XP to 32 bit Windows 7 on a Dell Dimension 8300 desktop. I've run the upgrade advisor. The desktop has 2 hard drives and a RAID controller configured in Stripe(RAID 0). I bought the Windows 7 Home Premium family pack (3 installs) and did the XP to Windows 7upgrade on two laptops; so I think the disk is okay. When I start the upgrade for a clean install on the desktop I get a "f1 to retry boot f2 for setup" message from the BIOS indicating that it does not seem to recognize the Windows 7 install disk in the CD. I've check the CD reader and it seems to read the files without a problem. I can start the Windows 7 install within XP but that does not work for the clean install, I need to start from the boot. There is a second DVD ROM drive on the system but that does not work either.
