Recommend A Laptop For Gaming And Music Production?
Aug 9, 2012
I'm looking for at least an i5 processor or something similar, 300gb or more HDD, 6gb or more RAM, and a gfx card that can play World of Warcraft on high settings (not bothered about ultra). It also has to be good for DAW use and audio recording. I use and audio interface for this so I won't worry about the laptops soundcard. Decent cooling would be nice too.

my PC randomly hangs and makes a lovely noise (through the speakers rather than the computer itself) when listening to music, watching vids online/offline, gaming, basically at any time, when there is no sound it still hangs for a second when moving the mouse but makes no noise through the speakers. I've just done a clean install and have removed all OC to see if it makes any difference, all drivers are up to date with latest versions from manufacturers, i'm about to pull out my sound card and use onboard sound to see if that's the issue, but i believe i've tried that once before. Have experienced BSOD on this rig, but haven't had it for a while.
Here's my rig:
Win 7 Ultimate x64
Intel i5 3750K, stock speed
8Gb Crucial PC3-10700H RAM
Gigabyte Z77-DS3H mobo (F9 BIOS - not F10 beta)
Saffire HD7770, stock speed
M-Audio Audiophile 2496
OCZ Agility 3 120Gb SSD (Firmware 2.25 I believe)
Seagate Barracuda 500Gb HDD

"Intel has a series of âpre-productionâ drivers for its graphics chipsets in Windows 7. Itâs a clear attempt to avoid the incompatibility problems which plagues Vista.
Though the next edition of Windows isnât even at beta stage yet, Intel has announced:
Intel is making available for testing its preproduction WDDM1.1 graphics driver, enabling the full Windows 7 experience. The driver is the result of an ongoing collaboration with Microsoft to provide OEMs and developers with drivers that deliver all of the required WDDM1.1 features for Windows 7. As a result of the collaboration, OEMs and beta users can stay in step with Windows 7 prereleases for smooth product development.
To explain the jargon, drivers are the link between hardware and Windows, while WDDM is Windowsâ Display Driver Model, the overall system for graphics drivers that was introduced in Vista and continued in Windows 7.
OEMs are Original Equipment Manufacturers: in other words, firms which make computer parts (or entire machines) that are then usually sold on by other manufacturers.
In short, the announcement means Intel is taking serious steps to make sure its chips work properly in Windows 7. If there are any problems, it wants plenty of time to sort them out before the official release.
The announcement is also a sign that Microsoft promises to do a better job of working with hardware firms to ensure driver compatibility are being followed through. Many manufacturers complained that they didn't have enough notice of driver requirements for Vista, which led to incompatibility.
And while a few such problems might have seen the device producers blamed for shoddy work, the Vista issues were so widespread that the operating system itself bore the brunt of most public discontent. So Microsoft has as much, if not more motivation to avoid such problems this month.
Of course, Intel is such a major player that Microsoft has to keep it happy (witness the debacle over Intel chips which weren't âVista capable). The real test is whether Microsoft gives the same level of timely cooperation to smaller manufacturers."
Intel already has Windows 7 drivers - VISTA.BLORGE
http://vista.blorge.com/2008/12/19/intel-already-has-windows-7-drivers/
n an effort to avoid compatibility problems that plagued the launch of Windows Vista, Intel is giving developers a jump on its Windows 7-based product line.
The company has released a pre-production version of Windows 7 drivers for graphics chipsets. The WDDM1.1 graphics driver is designed for "enabling the full Windows 7 experience," Intel said, noting that the driver is the result of ongoing collaboration with Microsoft.

My asus g60jx laptop recently went down with a fried motherboard [ =( ], I had originally planned on getting another asus as I really enjoyed the one I had. Im starting to wonder wether or not I should get a PC instead. I really just want something powerful enough to play modern games and maintain good fps etc... I dont need a "master of the universe" computer, something around 700-800 dollars. I have seen the refurbed asus's for around that price and it seems most come with the i7, 1.5-2gb graphics, 6-8gb ram etc. What I am really wondering is, how much more could I get for the same money out of a pc? Or how much would similar speccs cost for a pc? I love the mobility of a laptop, but if i can save a few hundred and get the same thing I would be pretty stoked.

I have a Samsung laptop with Windows 7, and every time I try and burn a music CD, I put it in my player in my car and it just makes this feedback noise - no music. It'll play on my laptop, though. It used to work fine with my Dell laptop (which had Windows XP), so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or it's a system issue. Some songs are mp3 and some are m4a, but the car CD player won't play the disk at all.

Every time I start playing music (VLC) my laptop restarts. I have been experiencing this for more than a month. Tried reinstalling drivers and even Win7 but nothing seems to help. Previously it used to give me a BSOD restart but since the last time I reinstalled Win7 after formatting the laptop it just restarts and asks me whether I want to start windows in safe mode or normally. This is really disastrous since I am used to continuous music.

I have a Alienware M15x laptop with system specs I have until now considered to be quite good. I recently had to reinstall Windows, a bad Torrent download corrupted my computer and I didn't have a Windows Recovery Disc. Many people tell me not to care about the Windows Experience Index, but here's the rating: It used to be 6.0, 6.6, 5.5, 5.9 and 5,9. Now it's 4.1, 6.4, 5.1, 5.5 and 5.9. The one that has lowered the most is the Processor component. Now, if my computer's performance hadn't been affected, I wouldn't have bothered. However, it did. I used to be capable of running GTA 4 at maximum settings at 1980x1080 without lag, Crysis 1 and 2 at medium-high settings at that same resolution, as well as many games such as Batman: Arkham Asylum, Bioshock, Borderlands, F.E.A.R. 1 and 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 at varying quality settings. Now, even at the lowest settings I can't run any of these games without a very noticeable stutter, often making it impossible for me to play these games.
I have a Page File set for my two disk drives (I have only one Hard Drive, partitioned to separate my games from the rest of the system).I have Avast! as my antivirus, and I regularly scan my computer with Avast!, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and Windows Defender, but I never find anything. I also use CCleaner often to clean up the registry. What made my laptop cease to be as powerful as it was before? Was it my reinstalling of Windows? It's really getting on my nerves, seeing that I could play Crysis 2 and it was silk-smooth, but now even games like The Ball, which isn't especially resource-consuming, often stutters and lags when something's happening on-screen.

I recently got a new 120gb SSD to replace my HDD. I have an i7 Lenovo y570, 8gb ram, with switchable graphics using a Nvidia GeForce 555m. Before upgrading, while playing Guild Wars 2 my performance was flawless on ultra graphics running at about 80 C and stable 50 FPS. Now I'm experiencing spiking FPS running at about mid 90's C after 5 mins on the lowest graphics settings! I updated all drivers and installed it correctly to the best of my knowledge.

My PC is not working It turns on for five seconds, turns off for five seconds, then reboots but the screen displays nothing. I have checked the video card on a different PC, checked the HDDs, and the power supply - those are all working fine.I have assumed that the motherboard or CPU have died and need replacing (is there a way to find out for sure?).My main point for this thread: Could anyone please recommend me a really kickass motherboard, CPU, and RAM? I am also hoping to have one dedicated HDD for Mac OSX , so a processor/motherboard that will be compatible with Windows and Mac would be excellent (is this even possible?)have one HDD dedicated Mac OSX so I can use Final Cut Pro and avoid spending $2000+ on a Mac Pro.
I was recommended this processor: Newegg.com - Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I72600K

My laptop has hardware support for Win 7 only, so I opted for VirtualBox & installed XP Mode as guest operating system. I loaded softwares meant for Win XP like Guitar FX Box 2.6. But I am unable to set it up properly. It does not seem to independently capture the mic/line in as host OS keeps on playing the input sound in the background. There are issued of unable to select WDM streaming (getting error opening input device). Can anyone shed some light on how I can use XP Mode in my Win 7 laptop to play my guitar/music editing software effectively?

When listening to music on my PC, it does not matter if I use Winamp, Songbird, Quicktime, Windows Media Player, or any other software. Every so often, there appears some sort of distortion, like the drive that the music is on slows down. I dont know if it is the driver or what. Its hard to explain. You have to hear it. I dont think its the mp3 file itself, cause I could play a song and it will be perfect, but then the next time I play it, it will distort. It is really driving my nuts cause I can't find the reason for it.

I use my laptop for general use but also for processor intensive home studio audio recording. Rather than disable wirless, anti-virus software and a bunch of other things that can help me reduce processor drain each and every time I use it for music, I'd love to be able to have a different profile or maybe user account so that when I start up and choose that user/profile, wireless will automatically be disabled, most non-essential software (such as anti virus since I am not online) will not be run, etc.
I created a second user that I intended to use for the music related work. However, when I look at the hidden startup folder associated with either user, I see nothing (I have chosen to view hidden folders and files). If I run msconfig, I see many programs on the startup list. Amongst those are is antivirus software. It appears that when I deselect any program, it will not run regardless of which user I log in as, so it must be some sort of global setting. I still want most programs to run when I log in to use the laptop for general use (e.g. when I surf the web, I want the antivirus software to be active), so making such a global change does not seem to help me.My question is, can I somehow make these programs run only when I log in as a certain user? If not, is there another possible solution that would allow me to achieve the goals described above? Also, is there a way to selectively activate/deactivate wireless depending on which user I log in as?
