Receiving Wireless IP Address From Router?

Jun 15, 2012

So my friend just came over to my house today to use his fancy totally brand new MSI GE60 that he got from Newegg. This was the first time he was using his brand new laptop with a wireless network, and I need to specify that nobody else who has ever visited my house before has had problems with my Wireless network, including this very same friend, back when he was using his old laptop. So we tried re-entering the caps-sensitive 15-character-long password several times and we still managed to get the same problems--the computer constantly switches every 2-3 seconds between being disconnected, having limited access, and being connected to the router but still being unable to access the internet.

His installation of Windows came with a program made by Intel, the guys who make his wireless card, that allowed him to run diagnostics, and it claimed that his ipv6 was not receiving an IP address from my router. We've tried disabling and re-enabling his wireless adapter several times and we've tried restarting my house's router twice...everyone else in my house can connect totally fine, but he is still having these strange issues. So I downloaded Connectify and set up a network on my laptop and had him connect to it--and it worked just fine.Everything is set to DHCP and we even went through each and every single settings panel of all of MY laptop's wireless stuff and just copied it down onto his computer--it's just not working. We tried rolling back the drivers and disabling all of his firewalls/security applications, and it didn't work.

'No Internet Access' IP Address Shows Router Not The Modem IP Address

Jul 7, 2012

My internet connection shows 'no internet access' even though my ISP shows the connection is coming into the house just fine. I usually use a router (NetGear-WNR3500U) but I right now I have the Ethernet connection plugged directly into my PC. I tried directly plugging into my laptop and the internet works just fine. So I know the problem resides in the PC.

Some troubleshooting things I have tried.

-Power cycled my modem, router and PC.

-Repinged my connection from my ISP(Comcast Xfinity)

-Used the reset option on the router and the modem

-I was walked through the internet options needed with the tech support from my ISP to make sure DHCP was enabled and every other setting was correct, and he cleared me that all settings were correct.

-Tried ipconfig commands to /renew and /release my IP When I tried ipconfig /renew I get the error 'An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server'

-Restored my PC to a restore point where the Internet was working

All of these options did not work.

What I think the problem is and I am not sure how to fix it, when I run the ipconfig /all command my Auto configuration IPv4 Address shows 169.254.112.76 which I was told is a router IP address even though I am plugged directly from the modem to my PC with an Ethernet cord. So I think that's my problem? But I am not sure.

Directly Address 2nd PC On The Client Router, From Behind AP ?

Jun 25, 2012

months ago before changing a router I had an AP, and a 2nd router set as a Client Bridge, so pc's on one could detect pc's on the other. Can't recreate that for some reason [another long thread] but what I did get up and running is 2nd router in Client [wireless client] mode, so the 2nd router is pulling its internet access from the AP, but the addressing on the 2nd router is different [DHCP is enabled, and the router's ip is different: 192.168.2.1, whereas the AP is .1.1 and doles out its devices as .1.110 & up ... which is strange]
So, I have a 7 pc behind the 2nd router [the client router] which is addressed as 192.168.2.122

how do I directly access that PC from one that is wirelessly connected to the AP [i.e. an address of 192.168.1.117] ??what's the syntax?

Xbox - Can't Obtain An IP Address From Your Router Or Modem

Dec 31, 2009

I have a Xbox360 connected to my laptop via cable, then connect to Xbox Live wireless though a Linksys router (G 2.4 ghz). Everything works fine with my +6 year old laptop running XP home, but there is a little lag with one game.

So I bought a new Asus laptop that came with Windows 7 operating system. I tried to connect to Xbox Live the same way as I did with my old laptop, but it will not connect. The lap has a good wireless connection to the internet. (same connection as the old laptop).

I have enabled sharing in the network options. Reconfigured the xbox 360s IP address manually, automatically, and restored the factory setting, Still no connection.

Manually changed addressing on the laptop. Still no connection. The Error message on the Xbox is: Can't obtain an IP address from your router or modem.

Called Xbox tech support, Spend over an hour trying to fix the problem. We did everything. Turning the system on and off, modem on and off. reconfiguring the IP addresses manually, automatically, restoring factory settings, Changing the network setting on the laptop, enabling sharing, and so on. Still unable to fix the problem. The tech support person stated, it is a Windows 7 problem and he is unable to fix it.

I reconnected the old laptop and it connects fine without any issues. The old laptop has one foot in the recycle bin, and I would like to be able to use the New Laptop to connect.

I know the either-net cable works fine. I know I have a good wireless connection to the laptop. (Comcast).

The port on the laptop works with my printer. So I'm sure that's good. I have enable network sharing in the network settings. I have tried changing the IP addresses. Any suggestions?

Convert A Spare Wireless Router To A Wireless Access Point

Jan 23, 2012

In a few days time I will be changing my ISP in the UK from Sky to BT.

BT are providing me with their newest wireless router free of charge as part of the deal and I'll be using that to set up my wireless network, which will consist of an HP Pavilion desktop, a Toshiba laptop, a Sony Vaio laptop, an HP wireless printer and a Samsung HDTV.

This means my Sky wireless router is surplus to requirements, so I was wondering if I could convert it to a wireless access point to improve the range of my BT wireless network.

I've read a couple of supposedly easy-to-understand articles on Google and have to say they left me more confused than ever.

PC Unable To Identify Router / Network (wired) - DNS Server Address Ping Fails

Jul 9, 2012

Last Friday my main desktop crashed (lost power to the machine) and on restarting the PC was unable to "identify" the network. By identify, I mean, when using "Network and Sharing Centre" on the basic network information page, the PC shows "Identifying" under "active networks" - no matter how long I leave the PC.

PC details
Model: Packard Bell Power x-30
Processor i7 870 @2.93GHz
RAM: 8GB
O/S: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

Modem Router details
Netgear N300 Wireless Dual Band ADSL2+ Modem Router

The main desktop is connected to the modem router (via Ethernet). The modem router is showing no sign of any problems itself, all the dashboard lights look ok (i.e. power is on, port 1 shows the Ethernet connection in place, both wireless bands are lit, the DSL is lit and so is the internet). The household contains a number of laptops which continue to work ok wirelessly and/or wired through Ethernet. Even mobile phones are accessing the wi-fi ok.

The DNS Server address looks ok, as that is the address of the web page to the router. I cannot access that web page (address) via the main desktop, but I can from other devices ok. Having gone through Device Manager the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is showing as "working properly". I have tried pinging the DNS Server address, and that fail. I have gone through a system restore to a previous point (before the day of the crash) but that seems to have made no difference either.

I have attempted to set the IP addresses (for TCP/IPv4) directly
IP address 192.168.0.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
And therefore forced to set the DNS Server address too
Preferred DNS server: 192.68.0.1

But I don't know what to set for the alternate DNS Server, so left blank. This seems to step me forward, in that the device/network is now identified. However the internet access is still not work, as the "DNS Server is not responding".

Get A Wireless USB Router?

I was wondering to myself in Wal-Mart if I should get myself one of those USB routers for my Nintendo DSi, PSP and laptop computer. I mean I would love to have one so i can use the browsers in them and for updating/online gaming. but at the same time I think that since I have dial up it would be a waste of money to buy something that SHOULD be used on a cable/satellite connection. I was wondering if I could get your opinion on the matter, cause I can't come up with an answer myself.

Laptop Only Getting Wireless In View Of Router?

May 31, 2011

use my laptop just fine down a 40 foot hall way and through a kitchen and 2 more rooms wirelessly(admitedly with a mediocre connection).

About 2 days ago it was giving me sporatic messages after a restart claiming my network settings did not match the ones saved on my laptop. The only change that was made was adding all but one roomates devices to an access list on the router (since the jerk wouldnt shut off bit torrent while people were working). Some other people were noticing some screwy occurances too but dont recall the symtoms so I just set it back to factory default and removed the access list. Everyone else seemed to be fine

Yesterday I cannot see the router on my laptop, I cannot see my neighbors (sporaticly I usually would see 1 bar pop up but now I can't find it at all) I can pick up my router wirelessly only when I have direct line of sight to the router and only 4/5 bars 0,o , so that rules out a lot of choices in its self since it sees it, just not very well.
