Programs Randomly Hang Indefinitely Cannot Be Shut Down At All?
Apr 6, 2012
3-year-old ASUS laptop running Windows 7 64-bit. I recently went through a fresh install of Windows 7 due to a major driver corruption caused by a Windows Update. Since reinstalling, various programs seem to get stuck indefinitely and nothing I can do will close them. For clarity, I'll give an example of what usually happens:
1. Program locks up
2. I try to close it. Nothing happens.
3. I try to end the application in the Task Manager. Nothing happens.
4. I try to end the process and/or process tree in Task Manager. Nothing happens.
5. I try to shut down the computer. It hangs on the "Logging Off" screen indefinitely (let it sit overnight to test).
6. I end up manually powering down the computer.
When I restart, one of several things happens with no pattern I can find:
A. It starts up normally.
B. It starts up but very slowly (maybe 10 minutes to get fully booted).
C. It hangs indefinitely at the Windows "flag" loading screen.
D. I enter startup repair (usually after "C." happens) and either startup repair hangs indefinitely or (if it loads) it can find nothing wrong or can't fix the problem.
Offending programs have included Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, Open Office, Windows Explorer, iTunes, and Firefox, to name a few.
I use Avast! as my primary protection and it can find no problems. I've also run MalwareBytes with no success. Since it's a fresh install of Windows 7 (just a couple weeks old) and I haven't really done much downloading or exotic surfing, I have to think there's a deep-seated problem going on here. Please help before I go insane!
Alright, here are my pc specs first: I5-2310, 8gb Ram, geforce 560 gtx, 450 watt psu. 1.5 tb hdd. I am having an issue where my pc will randomly hang for a second or too, sometimes when something loads sometimes it just does it randomly, its really starting to worry me, I've scanned for viruses, and defragged my hard drive and this has not fixed it. Does it every 30-60 mins on average.
I have 5 windows 7 machines on a windows 2008 domain. Only the windows 7 machines from time to time do not log off.You log off at night and come in the next day and it still says logging off on the screen the only thing to do is press the power button and shut down.
last night i was just minding my own business watching Internet videos, until my computer just randomly restart. the tower was still fully powered but the operating system restart, and now i can't boot up windows! every time i try to boot it up i get a black screen with a flashing _ at the top and it just stays there, i've tried booting up in safe mode but that doesn't work! i put good money into this computer and there's allot of important files on it for my school work on it, i'm using a friend's laptop until then.
Lately I have been having problems with my laptop. It freezes randomly. Most of the time it's when I want to shut down the computer it just says "shutting down" but it doesn't till I hold the power button. And when starting up it's stuck once in a while and every time I try to disconnect my wireless internet it just gets stuck and ctrl + alt + del doesn't work at all.
I was just sitting on my bed next to my computer when I saw something weird happen, my aero theme turned off and my CPU and GPU temps both started to rise. I saw my CPU temps getting higher than I normally see them go even while gaming so I reached over and wiggle my mouse around a little. My theme went back to aero and the temps went right back down to idle. Anyone know what this could have been? I'm extremely scared to leave my PC on when I leave the house now thinking that it might overheat.
Is there anyway that I can get windows to repoen all the programs I had open when I last shut the machine down when I re-start it? i.e. same work processors programming tool with the same files open and ideally curser in the same place?
I bought a new asus laptop with windows 7 and when i load any program on it! it will not shut down through start menu i have tried to install in different order no
Since yesterday I have been unable to make contact with my WiFi. Everything else seemed to be running fine. I decided to try a System Restore and go back two days. I started it two hours ago and it's still running. I have a feeling this System Restore will never end. I made almost no changes in the past few days. I can restore from my backup but I am beginning to think this may be a hardware problem. I am using a different computer to log this message. Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 32 bit, 4gb
I am trying to re-image a laptop but both with a USB or a CD when it is loading up the install it just gets stuck with the loading graphic just going and going and going....I've replaced the hard drive on this laptop already, but I've used the same CD and USB to re-image other PC's.
After about 2-3 hours I had everything installed, powered up just fine, popped in the windows 7 disc and started installation. Everything ran smoothly until first restart. It went to the screen where the colors fly in to form the Windows logo and says starting windows and then just sits at that screen indefinately. I've searched numerous forums trying to find an answer but I haven't found any with the exact problem i'm having.
So my laptop was working fine last night, woke up this morning and this issue appeared. I'm guessing it's a virus (stupidly, I haven't installed an AVP on this machine yet). Anyways, I can't open anything. Doesn't matter where I try to open the program or file from. The load icon appears but nothing happens. I also can't access the task manager or shut down/log off/etc. from the start menu, I get a "Failure to display security and shut down options" error msg. I'm in safe mode with networking right now, which is allowing me to open programs. I've already tried a system restore but it didn't solve the problem.
I have had my HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1) for less than a year and I am encountering a ton of problems.Whenever I go to open a program, it unresponds for a short while before I can continue to use it.Sometimes my keyboard acts up, for e.g. if I were to press T whilst in an internet browser, it would open a new tab, as if I was pressing the CTRL button when I'm not.Sometimes my laptop shuts down - sometimes there is a blue screen error message before, other times it just shuts down without one.I have Trend Micro Tiatanium anti-virus protection and have done scans and nothing has showed up.
I just got latest version of windows 7 installed on my new msi gx620 laptop and I am having one problem. Any window I have open whether its a game or firefox it randomly minimizes. Very annoying when I am trying to play games. I am not hitting any buttons or anything to cause this.
Hey i just installed windows 7 home 64 bit on a new computer i built, i did recycle my old hard drive, however i wiped it clean with the OS install. the problem is every 5 Mins or so any program i have open will minimize.
Recently I have gotten a new issue. I will be doing something basic on the computer, such as opening a new tab, or closing starcraft 2, and then suddenly all programs running will close. It gives no warnings, and it has nothing to do with the specs of my computer. I have 8 gigs of ram, a 2 gig gtx 560 and a 3.2 ghz 8 core processor. One out of the 5 times it has happened, it said "facebook messenger has stopped working correctly" or something.
I receive this blue screen randomly while running the computer, it instantly crashes, dumps, and reboots.I am running this PC on a local network, and I am the primary network administrator.I have tested my memory with Memtest86, and all 4 sticks passed individually. [code]
Throughout the past week my computer has been sporadically freezing and buzzing, forcing me to restart when it happens. At random intervals it will freeze and proceed to make a buzzing noise that emits from my speakers. It never crashes to blue screen, I ultimately have to force a restart.
I've made sure that everything is properly connected and that the computer is clean. I'm not really sure what the problem is.
Quite frequently windows or a program will stop responding, locking up my computer. I was running a /verifyonly, and at 30% it stopped. A few minutes later the following error presented itself.
mcagent.exe - Application Error
The instruction at 0xe7bcdcd5 referred to memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read.
So I recently purchased a new ASUS laptop, and everything has been fine except for windows 7. In particular, 32 bit programs will inexplicably crash at random times, and when they do, they often all crash at the same time. For example, Steam, windows media player, uTorrent, and Firefox all crashed at the exact same time a few days ago, and several other simultaneous crashes have happened since. IE8, which has to run in 32bit mode for college related applications, crashes frequently as well, and has nearly compromised my work on several occasions.
I've tried recreating it, but I can't. The only thing they have in common is that they are all 32 bit programs, even things widows photo gallery(which is 32bit) crash randomly.
While I have my laptop shut my Icons shift around and change size and some of them are randomly opened I came home to 30 instances of Alchohol 52 opened on my screen. I cant figure out whats doing it its a brand new laptop only had it for about four weeks.
This is not a big problem but is quite annoying, sometimes randomly the icons for my start menu programs will disappear and the icon will change to the default one when there is no icon to be found. Just random programs do this and if I go to properties it still says the icon is the old one but shows up as default in the program list. If I just hit apply and ok it changes it back. Is there anyway to prevent this or know why this does happen?
some of my programs like completly stoped working like go to play them and they worked before i my computer wouldnt come outta sleep mode and now the programs that were just apear with a program stop working/responding and just recently another program has started to say program has stopped working/responding and all i did was open it and just wondering if anyone got any ideas but mostly i am just gonna format if i cant fix it
I am having a big issue with my computer. I originally ran windows xp professional until i upgraded to adobe cs5 and needed to switch to windows 7.now that i have windows 7 my programs stop working constantly. if i'm working in photoshop on a large photo the screen will go blank and a bubble will pop-up saying "driver stopped working but has started working again" and a lot of times photoshop, illustrator, and FL Studio will stop working and need to be shut down and started again. i've noticed sometimes when the computer is on overnight i'll wake up and it will be off. when i turn on the computer it will say that it didn't shut down properly. i was in the process of doing batch photo edits and it shut down on me right in the middle so i've got to figure out the problem. since i use this computer for freelance graphic design and photography. here are my specs.
I am having the weirdest problem with my computer. randomly my mouse will just stop opening programs/applications, i cannot click on anything in the taskbar etc. I have also tried a different mouse... & reformatted my computer back to the bare basics, reinstalled all the drivers to no avail. one minute i am playing BF3 fine or doing something else and down it goes... the only thing i can then do is reboot my system and go again.
Everytime I'm using my computer or playing a game it does it. In games it minimizes the game after some minutes, and keeps doing it all the time, and I can't really play.. I don't know what to do, I've looked at soooo many websites. And right now when I'm writing after 30 sec or something like that it "unfocusses" like another program is opened and then I need to click in this writing box again, to write... It's freakin annoying, and I don't know what to do...
Programs randomly go "Not Responding" for anywhere from 2 seconds, to a minute. It mostly happens on games that I play including League of Legends, audio would stutter and/or be delayed at times, my mouse will still be move-able, but I can't click on anything in the game, everything just freezes. I can alt+tab during this to exit the game and do whatever I want, other programs will be fine in the meantime during this. I've had this problem for several months, looked on multiple sites for answers, couldn't find anything that helped. I system restored my PC twice, Scanned for virus's, used malwarebytes and norton security (just installed yesterday), can't seem to find a fix. I have no idea if it's a problem with windows 7 or if it's a hardware issue. I've read a bunch on it and everything says something different. Looking for someone to help me with my problem because nothing seems to work.

After booting, the computer freezes at the welcome screen after logging in as any of the users. Sometimes it will restart automatically, other times it has to be "hard shut down". It freezes at the same time, consistently. Occasionally, through an unknown set of steps, I can get the computer to boot properly. It crashes after a short while of using it, and then once again crashes at the welcome screen. Every time it has crashed so far it was while playing a game (not necessarily graphics-intensive). Again, after this crash the computer returns to just crashing at the Welcome Screen.
I just bought my laptop last week. Im using IE8 and have experienced thrice already that my laptop would hang like forever if its left idle for about 20-30mins. It says "not responding" already. I am really worried because Im confused if the problem is with my new laptop or with the I itself. I had to take out my battery just to turn it off because it really is not responding. I tried to show my task manager so I could end it, but even the task manager wont show. Please please help because Im really worried. Im thinking of returned my laptop for replacement, or is it the browser that's the problem?
