PowerShell Logon Script?
Aug 24, 2010
Ok, so this doesn't necessarily have to do with Windows 7, but I originally wanted to reply to a post on Vista forums and somehow I ended up here. Anyway...I actually tried all of this on Windows Server 2008 - set policies, scripts and logged on there.Here's one way that actually works. 1) created a logonScript.ps1 file with whatever in it for the actual logon script. 2) created GPO with a policy for running a logon script and specified a vbScript file: launcher.vbs. 3) put those two files in the same folder related to the policy if you know what I mean[CODE]

What is the main difference between Powershell and Command Prompt? I use cmd quite a lot, and I know that certain functions in Powershell, such as diskpart, gets referred to command prompt, then what is the use for powershell? Why should one use it and what is the main benefit of using it?

So, I have this for batch renaming files in a folder:
Dir | rename-item -newname { $_.name -replace "oldname","newname" }
And it works like a charm. The thing I can not figure out how to do is add characters - w/o changing any. So let's say I have 3 files: 1.txt 2.txt and 3.txt - I want to change them to be x1.txt x2.txt and x3.txt
So I try replacing 'replace' with 'add' like this:
Dir | rename-item -newname { $_.name -add "x", }
But it doesn't work. Is this possible, and if so, what I am missing in my command line?

We have just been sent a free computer for our office. A Windows 7 HP 32bit.We can login locally i think to a local user KB_SUF/User (where KB_SUF is the name of the computer)however whenever the UAC comes up when installing anything, we cannot proceed because it keeps saying "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request" The thing is they sent us the computer without removing it from the domain Now I cant install the programs i need to work and it doesnt seem like theres a local admin on this computer. I tried removing this computer from the domain but it requires going through UAC.Is there any way to make this computer a Local only PC?The company that sent us the computer is in another country and they say they can send someone over in 6 months which is longer than i can wait.

I got 2 DVD : One blu-ray SATA writer and another Pioneer DVD PATA writer. I replaced my motherboard. My new motherboard doesn't have any PATA port. I decided to try this: SATA Serial-ATA to 3.5 IDE PATA Converter Adapter Cable | eBay
This thing works, my DVD is detected in BIOS, UDMA mode 4. DVD is bootable with the proper media, it is also detected and works fine in WinPE booted from my Blu-ray.
The problem is with my Windows 7 installation. The DVD is not detected after I boot. I have to go to Device manager and click "Scan for hardware change", then the DVD-RW is detected and it works fine after that.
I tried many things, I uninstalled Daemon tools, VirtualBox, I tried a registry fix (lowerfilter, upperfilter), no good.

I'm posting this for a friend who has some issues with a corporate laptop. They have everything installed as "username" and all their files on their desktop or in their documents folder. For some reason now, when they logon it says: "Windows is preparing your desktop" and then it logs in and has some notification about using the default account. All the folders are empty, the desktop is empty and the wallpaper is just black. If you navigate to 'C:Users"username"' you can see that everything is still there and it seems that it has created a folder called "temp.domainname" and is using that. Any help on reverting back to "username" and not "temp"?
P.S. The OS is Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit

I have added an SSD drive which contains operating system and programs. I used Paragon to migrate my old C drive to the new SSD. I can boot from the SSD (wow is it fast). But when I use my old username to log on (Dick) it logs me on as a temporary user. I have done the registry thing by erasing the BAK at the end of the profile but it does not work. I have created a new user name (Dick_New) and that works, but, of course I am having to recreate everything, and all of my links are broken, eg., my many plugins in Photoshop and Lightroom. Almost as bad as doing a clean install (which perhaps I should have done).
My question. Can I just copy my "Dick" user profile from my new F Drive (old C) onto the new SSD. Or perhaps, just overwrite the new profile with the old?With Photoshop and LR when I activate a plugin, it tells me I have to reenter the license info to activate. When I do that I am told that I cannot do it because possibly there is another copy already running. I am going to call Nik later this morning when they open, but I am hoping that someone here has the answer to this question also. Of course, if I can log on using my old profile, this would become mootech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2OS Version: Microsoft Windows[CODE]

My Windows 7 started going to black screen after logon, I presume it started after my power went down suddenly.Anyway, I re-installed Windows 7 and it persisted. Then I installed Windows 8 preview to try something different and the same thing kept on happening.Also, half the time my computer won't even boot at all, I push the power button, hear the computer starting but the screen doesn't even turn on and it behaves like there is no input.

So I was looking around the internet trying to customize my logon screen for win7. I was able to change the background but I've no clue how to get rid of the icon. Is there anyway to make it so there's just a place to type a password and no icon above it? Been poking around for awhile and I can't seem to find any info on it.

im running win7 ultimate x64 on a dell xps studio. I used a simple application called tweakslogon. url...Everything seems normal and the software is ver simple to use. However, lately i've been noticing that randomly my logon screen changes to some random wallpapers, which by the way i have no idea where they come from. There is no setting on this program to change wallpaper every so often so thats not a possible issue. It just does its job and lets you be. I've even gone into the system32/oobe folder where the background files are and manually deleted these wallpapers and just left my default picture that I chose. Give it a few days and when I boot my computer the background has changed. I go back into the directory and magically theres a picture there that i've never seen before.

However the students accounts still retain the old printer and does not appear like it has looked at the script.When trying to manualy add the printer it detects it and installs the drivers, however an error, "The credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of credentials. Do you really want to overwrite the existing set of credentials?"Clicking yes, "The existing set of credentials cannot be deleted. Operation could not be completed error (0x000008ca)"

If I don't move my mouse, or type anything for 1 minute, Windows 7 automatically brigs me to the log-in screen / change user screen (locks the pc).
I have set all the power settings for sleep, hibernate, dim, turn of HDD to none, or never. I also do not have a log-in password for my username (there is only one user).

My wife and I each have user accounts and we "Switch User" back and forth all the time, and sometimes leave it at the logon screen with our two icons to click on.
In XP, the screensaver would run on the logon screen, but I'm noticing that nothing happens from the logon in 7. We have use the photo screensaver which makes it a digital picture frame of sorts, but if you leave it at the logon, you'll come back an hour later to see our two icons waiting for you.
Has the screensaver on logon been removed or is there a configuration I'm missing?
