PC Stopped Recognizing External HD But Other PC/Laptops Still Do
Jul 1, 2011
One day my main desktop stopped recognizing my external 2.5 HD (uses to 2 usb ports for power). Even in "disc management" its not recognized, but the interesting thing is, all other usb devices work perfectly even all thumb drives.
I originally thought my HD was starting to fail, but later realized it worked on my laptop and htpc. Both computers recognized the external drive w/ no problems 100% of the time.
Things Ive done since:
1.Reformat main desktops HD and reinstall windows 7 (32)
2.Reformatted external HD (did it on the laptop)
3. Tried all usb ports with same result
* In the Bios, under "usb config". The drive IS recognizable. But when windows starts up, nothing happens.
But my main desktop still wont read or recognize my external drive. Im guessing its my motherboard (Asus P5KC) or PSU thats giving me the problems? Is my external drive not getting enough power? Is there any other way to trouble shoot this?
i have a 1Tb external Drive (USB) and its never had any problems until now. I just recently reinstalled windows and when I try plugging in my external drive and then powering it on. My PC doesn't recognize it. I know that it knows its plugged in because it is showing up in Device manager and it is showing up as the "Safely remove usb" in the task bar.
My old computer died, Sony Vaio Running Windows XP. I had been using a 100GB sata eternal drive for backup. Bought new computer, Gateway DX4860/6gigs ram running Windows 7 Home Premium, plugged external hard drive in and nothing happened. New machine does not recognize the external hard drive.
I'm using the release candidate and whenever I plug in my Western Digital Passport USB external hard drive, I get nothing. It doesn't show up in device manager or in My Computer. The light on the harddrive comes on and the drive spins up, so I know it's working. Windows just won't recognize it.
I have windows 7 64 bit and I'm trying to copy data from my old desktop which won't boot up anymore to my laptop. It is a 3.5 inch sata hard drive which I connected to a usb external hard drive dock. But when I plug it in windows just doesn't recognize it and it doesn't appear in windows explorer. When I go into disk management it recognizes it but says it is not initialized and asks me if I want to initialize it. I'm reluctant to do this as I'm not sure if it will wipe the drive. Any ideas on how I can view my files? It is a 300GB drive split into 3 NTFS partitions which has both windows xp and windows 7 installed on it.
I am having a problem with a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus External Hard Drive connected to the USB port of my Asus Sabertooth motherboard. After waking up the system after sleep, the external drive vanishes from the PC. Web searching has shown me a fix in 2009 that was supposed to be incorporated into Windows 7. It either was never done, or it was not pertinent to my situation, since it made no reference to USBconnection. The problem described then was that due to the large size of this drive, it did not respond soon enough to the awakening process, and thus was never seen
as the topic states, my main desktop and my netbook cannot recognize having two identical external hdd's at the same time.It will recognize each seperate, but not both at the same time. The reason i need this is that i am backing up all my WII iso's
both hard drives are WD mypassport 500gb external portables (both powered by USB), and each are partitioned. on one partition its formated ntfs, the other WBFS and both are the exact same like that.
i guess im wondering if its because i named the second hdd drive x and drive z?
i got a warning when formating the second one something like (windows doesnt like when you name the hdd letters like x and z) what i dont get is that both drives can be recognized when plugged in seperately...
I'm a bit kind of desperate now. I purchased a 2TB Western Digital Sata drive (WD20EARS) and an enclosure with USB2 and eSata interface (independent power supply).Everything was ok for almost 2 months till today it just suddenly stopped being detected at all.I wasn't doing anything in particular when this happened. I remember I restarted my laptop around the time this happened (I do not remember if it happened before or after this)When I attach it with the eSata cable, nothing happens. With USB, I hear the beep that "something" was attached but then again nothing. Nothing at all in Device Managre or Storage Management.
i've got 2 extra 1TB Seagate drive:[URL]I use these to make backups of my 3 hard drives (1 x SSD, 1 hybrid, and 1 SATA). I brought this new machine back in April, and it was working fine up until then. However, after trying to install some software (which didn't wanna install in the end anyway, due to it being rubbish!), I can now no longer see these drives on my PC The weird part too - is that my Win7 laptop has exactly the same issue ... but my brothers Vista laptop, and Win7 PC see them just fine!To start with I was thinking the drive had gone faulty (as it wasn't working on both my machines), but after testing it on my brothers stuff it prooved they are both working fine The USB's I'm using to connect it to are fine (They work for USB sticks and other USB kit) ... so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what it could be? The even weirder thing - is that my brothers 500gb external drive (can't remember what make that was, but its not Seagate) works just fine! Its driving me up the wall as I can't do my daily backups (I'm a software developer, so having a current backup of my PC incase of a fatal mess up with my system is vital for me)
I have a Windows 7 Laptop which i bought in January, at the same time i bought a WD 2TB external hard drive to back up all my files onto (last laptop broke and i lost everything so decided to keep everything off the laptop itself).
I've lenovo z570 laptop. all drivers are installed including camera's, but don't have the capture software. so i can't capture any pictures off line. how can i get the software????
When I run the program from the start menu the title menu comes up and when I click start a box pops up saying 'Please insert successful driver DVD to continue or Cancel to quit programme', So i then put the dvd into the laptop and it makes all sorts of stuttering noises and I keep clicking ok on the box and it just keeps returning the same message. Basically I can't run the program. It's not the CD because I have just installed and opened it on another laptop just fine. The problem laptop plays movies from DVDs no problems it's just this program I can't open.
I've come to you before, and I'll come to you again when I am in need of your expertise! Two laptops of mine have been broken for a time now, and I decided it was time to fix them, but sadly I couldn't. First Laptop Won't boot in safe mode or in regular. BSOD, but auto reboots, can't read fast enough. When installing Windows 7, it hangs at the "Setup is starting" When attempting to "Repair your Computer" from the CD, nothing will show up. Second Laptop Won't boot gives the "NTLDR" is missing. When booting from Windows 7 CD, Gives "Bootmgr is missing" Edit: Second Laptop now booted from Windows 7 CD without issue now. Currently installing Windows 7. If there's any issues, I'll report it.
I have two laptops. 30 minutes ago, both of connected just fine. Then I uninstalled two programs called ezvid and Sendori. On both computers. Now one of them cannot open up any web pages, but the other one is completely fine. Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer. None of them work. I've tried the system restore twice, but both times it said that it was unable to restore. I've also spoken to a Comcast representative and done the CMD ipconfig/release and renew. I've tried it on Safe Mode. I've tried turning off my fire wall. I've even connected the computer to the router with a wire.
I don't know what this means but it popped up after everthing went wrong: "Error loading peer to peer connection. Listening port is blocked and returned port zero, please check you firewall settings and you networks adapters. Downloads and fill lenght videos cannot be watched without the peer to peer library!"
i have a HP laptop and it came with a windows 7 orginal DVD and key. my Question is im thinking of buying a new dell laptop which also comes with installed windows 7 but i wont get a free copy of windows 7 DVD. so should i burn my existing HP's win7 dvd to a blank disc and use that dvd to install windows if needed in my new laptop.. ofcourse ill use different keys cuz keys are always underneath the laptop.
so in short, if i do that i will be able to run geniune windows on both my laptops? use same win 7 dvd but using HP key in HP laptop and dell key in dell laptop?
I was wondering if anyone knew whether sometime in the near future, it will be possible to purchase the discs with drivers etc on them from PC manufacturers?
i have two laptops at home. i want to share files with them using the Wi-FI. i created an ad-hoc network and was able to share files but the thing was that the speed of the transfer is very slow around 700 Kbps. Is there a way i can improve the speed?
