Windows 7 Takes Forever To Load The Select User/switch User Screen?
Jan 17, 2013Earlier today I turned on my Toshiba laptop (Satellite P855-S5200) and got some sort of error screen, and then it brought me to a screen asking if I wanted to do a system repair or start windows normally. I chose system repair, but then it seemed to get stuck in that process (It was taking forever and nothing was happening), so I turned off the laptop (I know, big no no), booted in safe mode, and did a system restore to a restore point from about a week ago. The "starting Windows" screen came and went, no problem. Everything seemed fine till I got to the User Selection screen (the default blue one with the little hummingbird or whatever). Then it just sat there on that screen. I could see the hummingbird and the little squiggly lines, but there were no buttons to click my user. I just let it sit there, and after about 5 minutes, the user names popped up, and I was able to continue using the computer without any problems, no other speed issues whatsoever. It now makes me wait every time, always about 5 minutes, before the user names pop up. It does this when I restart the machine and when I try to switch users.
It is a Pentium Core i7
2.3 Ghz
8 GB RAM

I then created a new user profile but when I try to login I get the message 'The User Profile Service failed the login'. When I set these values back to normal, new accounts work fine but I really want my user accounts on the second partition.

Feb 17, 2012I am a lab technician for Microsoft classes at a community college. One of our students somehow messed up his hard drive. The computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit. The system has two administrator accounts and one standard user account. I am still able to logon with those accounts and there are SID keys for each of these users in the registry.
Now when we create a new user, the account is created without any problems. The user shows up on the logon page and after running the net user command, it shows up there as well. When I try to logon with the new user, I get a message: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
None of the new user accounts show up in the registry. The other anomaly that I see is that the Default User folder is missing in each of the Users subdirectory for the three accounts where I have no problems.
I have read the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 947215 and none of the methods apply to my problem. I also checked Local Group Policies and the Do not logon users with temporary profiles setting is not configured.

I added a new drive C and installed the OS on C but changed default location of User Folders to D. Now my existing User Folders are in the Users folder on D but there is no User Account associated with them. If I create a user account with the same name will it map to the existing folder within Users?I did a test of this. I created a folder called Test within Users then created a User account called Test and logged in. It created another folder within Users called Test.Computername.

Apr 3, 2012Windows XP Remote Desktop Behaviour is desireable. that is, when one account is logged in, if another account is tried to use to log in remotely from another computer, then the 2nd user cannot connect and it is indicated who is currently logged in.
Windows 7 Default behaviour is to allow the second user to try to disconnect the first user through a query message which has an idle timer.
Is there any way to change the behaviour back to windows xp, where 1) disconnection of the 1st user session is not possible, and 2) it is indicated which user is signed on?

Does anyone know if one could designate a user folder location such as E:Data instead of using the users name and being a subdirectory of "Users". I am the ONLY one on my computer - and it would seem much easier to look to the top folder in the E drive than clicking thru E:, users, name, documents, project. I fully realize that I can set up shortcuts, but when you are in an application that wants to place a file somewhere else and presents you with an explorer windows it is a pain. The only method I thought of is using redirection with symbolic links.

Nov 17, 2012when i try to create a new user profile ~ with or without a password, it shows up on the main login page, but when i click on it to open, the message "UserProfileService_service failed the logon_user profile cannot be loaded". i have searched microsoft support with little solutions listed. and the ones that are listed seem too technical for me to be trying on my own. there are many posts there with this problem, but they all seem to be several years old.
i am using windows 7. i have never been able to create any accounts other than my administrator account & the one account i use for all my general computer use. i have been using norton 360 with no problems. i have resorted to just using any "log in/log out' links on all the sites my husband wants to use.i am really not all that confident doing anything super technical to fix this, since i don't have a real understanding of different extensions or types of files. i am afraid i could really mess everything up really bad. but, it would just be SO MUCH EASIER & FASTER if i had my account & my husband had his own account.

Nov 7, 2011One of the Mac faithful is considering a switch to Windows 8 when it comes out. Right now, I'm typing this up on my Macbook Air running OS Lion with an iPhone 4 in my pocket, but after looking at the new changes in Windows 8 I am considering switching back to Windows entirely next year as I find the Mac OS environment SUFFOCATING.I was wondering about two critical features that the Mac have that I'm not sure that Windows 8 will have as well.Will there be gestures/multiple full screen apps on Windows 8?That's about the only two things that are convincing me to hold on to the Mac for now, but they are AMAZINGLY convenient for me. Not such a fan of Launchpad or Mission Control (rather buggy) but those things are critical to me.Two-fingers back-and forward. Three-fingers to switch between full screens. And there is even compatibility for a whole host of customized gestures that I use extensively. For example, I've grown so dependent on the trackpad that I now use copy/paste/back/ forward/bookmark/esc/tab switching/tab closing on it, to name the most important ones. I even have gestures to open applications for me, like Safari/Word for Mac/Mail/Notes/Documents/Downloads and gestures to duplicate the window snapping that I liked in Windows 7. And I honestly couldn't live without it now, even if I find the Mac environment severely limited in scope in terms of compatibility with many games/applications.
Also the full-screen applications would be efficient for real estate and task management (etc: I can gesture to the regular desktop from full-screen Safari in about half a second). and is a must-have.There are a number of issues I have with switching to Windows Mango/8 phones as well, such as better outlook task sync, TellMe compatibility with tasks and the issue (for me) of getting Bloomberg for Windows Phone, but as this is a Windows 7 forum I won't get into detail. Other than those three issues I think the interface is great, anyways.So yeah, that's basically my thought process about switching to Windows from Mac.
User Logged Out Of Windows
Mar 21, 2012I am stuck with a problem for quite a while now, Almost every morning when I return to my computer I find my user logged out of windows on the "logon screen". I do have the option "On resume, display logon screen" set and I don't want to change it for security reasons, it works fine for short times.( screensaver turns on, I move the mouse, I am back on the "logon screen" but still loged on). But it appears that if windows is left idle for too long on the screensaver it not only returns to the "logon screen" but also logs me off, I can rule out that the computer crashes over night and reboots from the system up time. Maybe there is a security policy setting or something that I am missing?

Oct 11, 2012For about a couple of weeks now I cannot seem to be able to switch to either my Guest user account or any other account for that matter (I had added my roommate as another user for the past year and things were running smoothly). I subsequently deleted his account after this problem started but STILL cannot switch into the GUEST account.
The switch user page loads, but immediately after clicking on the GUEST icon, the screen attempts to switch by changing BUT a few seconds into the mode reads "logging off" and then immediately reverts back to the icon screen with no progress.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. This is kinda frustrating, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Phantom User On Windows 7?
Dec 17, 2012I have a windows 7 small PC with two user accounts "Guest" and the one I use. I rarely if ever log in on the guest account. However sometimes I would come back to this PC and notice it is logged in as guest. This usually happens in the morning.This is a PC only I ever use yet I often see it signed in as guest without my doing.I've also noticed that after this happens my bluetooth headset acts odd. I can hear feedback from the microphone. As in instead of playing just the sound from the PC on the earphones I can barely hear them and instead I hear the sounds from the microphone.

My SSD is only about 70Gb, so I want to move the 27-ish Gb User folder (primarily my main User account I use - the admin / guest accounts use next to nothing.
But get a nasty error when re-booting (something like folder C:....Users is unavailable, my Desktop is gone, Outlook doesn't seem to remember it's installed, neither does OfficeTime. Firefox doesn't look anything like I've configured it either - no remembered passwords, toolbar completely different. Is there a quick way I can move the 27Gb User account from my C: SSD drive?
I'm generally very impressed with Windows 7, but it seems to be something that Microsoft have overlooked - the popularity of SSD's, and their limitation in terms of size...

Dec 1, 2011I have an HP machine that came with Vista. When I got this machine it had some major hardware problems these were fixed.I then had to replace th OS so I went with Win 7. The OS installed fine but I used my name during the install process that was ok because I was going to keep it. Then a very close friend of mine needed a computer because her old XP had died. I decided to give her the HP. I went into system and chaged the, computer name, and control panel, User's and changed that name both area's show that name. But when I go into my computer, C: drive, users my name is still there and I can not change it. The only solution I know might be to get into the regedit and change it there.

Dec 26, 2011I attempt to connect to my wireless broadband connection but when i click 'connect' a windows security pop up arrives stating that I need to provide a username and password for 'Network authentication'. I dont have these nor do I believe that I have ever included these perviously. This action has only recently appeared and I cannot 'bypass' it. I have other computers linked to the same wifi connection and these are operating just fine (the problem computer runs Windows 7 and is the only one with Win 7). So at least I know that it is not the internet connection itself.Maybe not of any importance but this problem only occurred after the unit ran out of battery power and has not been able to access my broadband service since the subsequent recharge.I have visited Win 7 Network centre on the computer to attempt to establish the problem (it recognises I have one) and been through all the troubleshooting options but no resolution.
