Does an XP and Win 7 machine need Teredo tunneling protocol IPv6 connectivity turned on to have a functioning home network (Teredo problem is on the Windows 7 box)? My Teredo device has not been working so I disabled it and now I'm attempting to setup a home network between the two computers and I'm having no luck.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 2 computers in a homegroup at home (Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits and Windows 7 Home Basic 32 bits), behind a TP-Link TL-WR740N router (and ZoneAlarm Free 9.2.076.000).
Both computers have Teredo enabled, but the Ultimate one is always running ("qualified"), whereas the Home basic one is mainly "dormant", unless, of course, I try to reach a website which "triggers" Ipv6 (e.g. Test your IPv6.).
Since both computers have exactly the same programs installed (and homegroup file sharing by itself doesn't change Teredo status - on the Home Basic one it remains "dormant" even while I'm doing so), why does the Ultimate computer has teredo always in "qualified" status? Does Windows Ultimate 7 enables this "qualified" setting (even if there's no Ipv6 trigger) by default, maybe due to its unique features (e.g. DirectAcess)?
If not, what else would trigger Teredo?
The second part relates to the first one... I'm not very comfortable with the Teredo service running all the time, due to security reasons... It seems that the process keeps some ports open, and that the traffic is not filtered properly (or at all), by the NAT and/or the Firewal.
So, how safe Teredo really is? Should I worry leaving it running all the time? Or should I try to minimize the potential security risks by finding out how to make it run only when really needed on the Ultimate computer (as the Windows Basic computer does)? Of course there's the "disabling it altogether" option, but I don't know whether it would impact the homegroup or not.
I uninstalled it previously because the icons were missing. So trying to reinstall it I keep getting a rather unspecific error just saying "an error has occurred". screen shot : http://i55.tinypic.com/vwzypj.png, I really need this to do homework n stuff.

I recently upgraded my OS in order to solve registry issues retaining to the corrupted windows installer. When I try to enable the Microsoft SE, it would not work. I went into the control panel (Add/remove programs) and removed it. So when i try to reinstall Microsoft SE, I am getting weird error (0x8004ff82). Just upgraded to windows 7 ultimate and when i restart, my normal microsoft usb mouse works in the bios until windows starts loading all the drivers from sys32. I used gpedit to disable auto install and uninstalled all of the usb drivers also gives me a code 19. where can i just find a generic usb driver or something.

I did some rummaging on here & found out that it was the athr.sys driver that was corrupted. So I went on the internet, found a clean copy, downloaded and swapped it out with the corrupted driver. Everything was fine for a couple months until last week the same thing happened again. So knowing the steps I had to take I repeated what I did by finding another copy of athr.sys off of the internet. (I think it was the same site so I'm pretty sure it wasn't a tainted copy) instead of swapping the files I accidentally went to Device Manager and fully uninstalled my wifi card! Panicking I reinstalled it using what must have been my laptops pre-installed software(?) (Also I note at this point when I accidentally uninstalled my wifi card I think I saw another device from the network section of Device Manager disappear along with Atheros. Whatever that device was, if it was even there, is a mystery to me)
