Mozy Online Backup Compatibility

May 8, 2009

I was looking at Mozy.com to do a full backup of my laptop's contents. I figure that Windows 7 is a good excuse to do a nice cleanup. Has anyone used Mozy with windows 7? Is there anything that I am missing that will prevent me from doing this?

Just wanted to make sure before I buy into Mozy for this sole purpose.

Mozy Backup After Migration To Windows 7

Jan 15, 2010

I have used Mozy on-line backup for a while now, when I was running XP. I find the service to work quite well, at an excellent price. Now that I have migrated to Win 7, I would like to restart my good back-up habits. The client seems to work fine with 7. However, it appears that the client wants to reload all of my files.I want to avoid this, considering it took about a month 24/7 the first time around.Catch is, I have made modest improvements to the structure of my directories, such that some files have been moved around.I have talked to Mozy a few times now about the best way to proceed. Each time, the customer service agent did not seem particularly knowledgeable about what to do.One agent has told me to simply restart the back-up process, and the system will figure out what has already been uploaded regardless of a change in file location. The agent kept referring to this as syncing. I tried this. It appeared to me that the client was again performing an initial back up and uploading everything all over again.Does anyone out there have any experience with using Mozy? After making the move to Win 7, how did you resume your backups? Do I really need to do the whole thing over again, or is there a better method. Or is agent number 1 correct, and Mozy will actually figure everything out without having to start from scratch, even though it appears this it is?

Created A Backup Image Using The Microsoft Backup Utility And Now Can't Restore?

Aug 9, 2011

I created an image using the Microsoft Backup and Restore tool in Windows 7. I saved the image on a network shared folder.I then went to the Advanced Recovery Methods in Windows to restore my image...that I just created. It restarts the computer and goes into recovery mode, I point to where the image is located, I entered the network credentials and it give me an error. "The Specified network resource or device is no longer available. (0x80070037)"

Backup Software That Splits Large Files For Incremental Backup

Dec 3, 2012

Any simple backup program that is capable of backing up large files incrementally by splitting the file and backing up only changed parts of the file? The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.

Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs. I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.

Backup External Drive Seen By My Computer, But Not Backup & Restore

May 25, 2012

I'm running Windows 7 64x Home Premium on a Toshiba Qosmio X505 laptop. I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). Now that I have the laptop back, I'm having trouble restoring my files. When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected.

When you wish to recover your system using this utility, do you use the Windows program at desktop or the rescue disc I created from the program? The reasn I ask is because I used to have better luck using Acronis' disc rather than the program and wonderd if the same applied here. Also, does the backup remove the existing one so that you only have one at a time or can you have more than one.

(windows Backup) Deleting Old Backup States?

May 8, 2011

I backup 100GB of data with Windows Backup and over the time where I do all my backups there is like only 30GB of data which changed from those 100GB and also new files were added. Now my external drive is full. When I now delete the very early backup, the first one where the 100GB of data was saved, will it delete then ALL those 100 GB, or will it just delete the previous versions of the files which were modified AFTER that time, which are in this case the 30GB I talked about? Because otherwhise I would then have in the end an uncomplete, messed up backup.

Multiple Backup Jobs With Windows 7 Backup?

Dec 7, 2010

I'm using Win 7 Pro and want to schedule several backups to my NAS. With Win XP, I was able to schedule multiple backup jobs, which makes things easier since I have 116 GB of data. I like to backup my documents, email files, etc. every week, but my photos, MP3s, etc. don't change as frequently so once a month is fine for that. Not surprisingly, the media collection takes much longer to backup, which is another reason I try to separate it from my "regular" backup.Unfortunately, Win 7 backup only seems to allow one backup job to be scheduled, which seems awfully limited. Am I missing something? Are there other free backup utilities that would work better, or do I need to shell out some cash?

Windows Backup "The Backup Failed." Error

Feb 26, 2012

I have a Win7 64-bit system and have been successfully using Windows backup on an approximately monthly basis. I ran it before going to bed last night and woke up to a "The backup failed." when I tried to create a system image of both of my hard discs. The error is "Incorrect function. (0x80070001)". I found a workaround solution at Windows backup or restore errors 0x80070001, 0x81000037, or 0x80070003 and looked up and found a number of "junction points", most rooted at c:UsersDilipAppData - but the problem is that there is no such folder.

64-bit Vs 32-bit Compatibility

Oct 25, 2009

I purchased a Dell laptop last May with 64-bit Vista. A number of web design and graphics apps I use were not fully functional on that OS, so I downgraded to the 32-bit Vista.

I now plan to upgrade that laptop to Windows 7.

Does anyone have any idea if the compatibility mode selections in Windows 7 64-bit will allow me to run more 32-bit applications than on Vista? I would like to take advantage of the extra RAM on my system, but not at the expense of applications not having full functionality.

I welcome any insights anyone can offer before I do the OS installation.

HDD Compatibility With XP?

Feb 15, 2010

I am curious about accessing an 'XP machine' with a 'Windows 7 machine.'

I'm planning on buying a storage drive, probably a 1.5TB drive. The new ones, mostly WD for now, have a new partitioning system and require a WD utility or Windows 7. I don't have it yet but might upgrade my Quad Core machine to Windows 7. I have an older laptop that has XP. It's not really powerful enough to bother installing 7 on it so it will remain an XP machine.

I will write to the new HDD from both computers. I guess I would format the new storage drive to NTFS format from Windows 7. (Or I could use the WD utility from XP?). There won't be any issues, right? Windows 7 NTFS is similar enough to XP NTFS?

If I got Windows 7, I think I wouldn't go any higher than Home Premium. I think there are utilities out there to obtain the XP Mode if I needed it. I just need to confirm that both operating systems can write to a NTFS-formatted storage drive with no issues. It will store video files, music files, documents, .exe files or program files but nothing installed; it's just for storage.

I am running a Norton antivirus which has been pretty good up till now. The computer seems to be running fine but my email account has been hijacked and on finding this out I have checked the computer and tried to perform a scan of both the windows system and also my accounts to no avail. The desktop symbols are all in place but none of them are working. I have also tried running a scan in safe mode, once again it would not work. The task manager did not show any action with regards to the antivirus scan that I had requested it to perform.
