View 1 Replies View RelatedI received an update to windows 7 on my hp PC. One of the updates was for nvidia software, however I noticed that after this update that when watching video on full screen that the image was much brighter more contrasty and sharper, so I fouterd (fiddled)about with the various nvidia menus to no avail.I'll just do a system restore and that should sort it The only good bit was that my full screen mode was back to normal; but it the first thing that happened was that when I went to type my password I couldn't type using the keyboard so I had to use the easy access on screen keyboard using my mouse.Even with windows up and running the keyboard simply won't function, in desperation I tried a couple more restore points and none them worked. I used the F8 KEY with keyboard to get into safe mode and this worked but as soon as the password is needed the keyboard is not here or even in safe mode it's not there. But the keyboard obviously functions since I can use it F8 mode; now the latest thing is that any system restore points fail.In F8 mode selection I notice that there is the option of Computer Repair but if I take this route does this mean that all my software will be removed? To be honest I don't care what the reason is or why this has happened I just accept that glitches can occur and all I really want to know is how to get out of this predicament.

This saves me a lot of time on a repetitive task with our software. However, when I asked one of our best developers how I could assign "mailto:" to another key, he had no idea how the existing functionality was set up. I have a Toshiba A300-18A laptop, bought in Portugal in 2008. It came pre-installed with Vista and I always left it in place because I couldn't find a proper time to backup everything properly. These holidays, I finally had the time to do that and 2 or 3 weeks ago I installed Win7. I didn't do an upgrade and did the custom install over the previous Vista version. Right after installation, during the first uses, my keyboard froze during an internet session. Simply, no key would work, but I had full control of the computer otherwise. Over the next days I found it happened quite frequently, and it didn't even need to be on internet. The most often place to freeze is in text editors (ConText, TexnicCenter), Excel (I'm using Office 2007), an online MMO and even the login screen, before I can actually access my computer. A restart usually solves the problem temporarily, sometimes I need two restarts in a row.Due to this, I did a reinstall of Win7, this time formatting the C: partition where I was making the installation. So this was a real clean install and I still had the same problems. I thought it would be drivers, so I installed some drivers I downloaded from Toshiba support center and THEN I found out about Toshiba's Win7 installation.Still the same problems. There are more curious things about the keyboard: it usually seems to think ctrl is pressed. I have opened the on-screen keyboard and noticed the ctrl-key depressed. Unpressing this key, thought, does not rehabilitate the keyboard. This ctrl-press must not always be on, thought, because sometimes I notice parallel behaviours and other times I don't. For example, I don't get 'save file' dialogs if I press 'S', but I do see the screen zooming in and out in a web browser if I roll my mouse-wheel. Also, I have some defects in Office (namely Excel) that I think may be related, and this since my first install: sometimes I'm going to Open Excel or Word and it says I have the ctrl key pressed and asks if I want to go through. More commonly I don't get this warning, but inside Excel, the usual shortcuts ctrl-c ctrl-v, ctrl-o (new book, portuguese version) offer me the insert/delete rows dialog. Sometimes ctrl-ins has this behaviour too, other times it works fine while ctrl-c does not. It's all very random. Finally, to complete the problems described in the subject. I've also noticed a behavious I NEVER had before installing Win7. Most often while playing the MMO (but not exclusively there) my screen goes white with some activity going up and down (sort of a mis-tuned TV from the analogical days) and I can only bring it to place changing windows to get my normal desktop. The MMO runs in dedicated full-screen mode and I guess it must be changing resolution. Also frequently (about 40% of the times), when I boot my computer it shows up the wrong resolution (1024x768) and, in the login screen, the little button on the bottom-right that allows one to shut down and restart shows up only these two options when ordinarily it shows 4 to 6 options. During normal use, I often get the video-going-white problem when I tilt the laptop display up and down.In 3 years I never had one single of the symptoms with Vista, now I get them everyday. Problem is that I quite enjoyed Win7 (and I don't like Vista) so I'd like to keep this OS if possible.

I was running xp fine untill a while ago. I was having hard drive problems.
I ended up getting a replacement hard drive, which is now in my PC.
I tried to do a clean install of 7, but the mouse and keyboard froze during install.
I'm able to install xp, which works fine, but would rather be running windows 7!
how can I fix this!?
I did manage to get it up and running eventually on the old hard drive-after turning off and on many many times during install due to mouse/keyboard freezes! and general 'hanging' at points during install
windows 7 then locked up my mouse keyboard after a few seconds or minutes (or froze?)
windows 7 safe mode worked fine.
I put this on the wrong forum, so here it is on the correct one. Lately the Del Desktop PC with Windows 7 64 bit refuses to come out of sleep when it has been left for a period of hours. When I manually send it to sleep it does so and the mouse and keyboard are set to revive it. It revives as it should do if I move the mouse or hit a key. However whenever I leave it asleep for a long period such as several hours, it refuses to awake and I have to force a reboot with the power button. That produces the black screen which you get after a crash.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI noticed that on Win 7 a process called consent.exe runs when i try to install any application. From the consent.exe description i understood that it is the consent UI for administrative apps and i believe it is related to the UAC since when UAC is disabled, this process does not run. Does anyone know what this exe exactly do in the background? I mean what checks does it perform? Does it connect to the internet to validate something? I have a 1.8 GB setup and it takes almost 2 mins for it to reach the UAC screen when i start installing it.

Also I also have another problem during the Startup of my computer.Once I start my computer and once all Icons and taskbar come, I try to open any application or any program like IE or Firefox and when I open it, the windows freezes and says not responding.I try opening "Task Manager " from the Task Bar and and even right click does'nt function.I feel as if everything freezes up and so I need to hit "Alt+Ctlrl+Del" for opening Taskmanager.. This sounds very wierd for me as I have to do this same operation every time..My configuration is above mentioned and I also share this little info with you.My hard Disk memory usage is about 268Gb of 280Gb with a single partiotion.
As I'm sure many of you already know, older Windows versions 95/98/XP had a way of soft-rebooting Windows; it essentially allowed you to reboot the system without actually turning the machine off.
In the older versions, I believe you just held the shift button down after clicking Restart until it rebooted back to desktop without turning the mechanical parts off completely.
Does Win7 have a function like this? Or does there exist at least some kind of workaround for all the reboots required during software install/Uninstall?

View 10 Replies View RelatedWhen my new laptop goes 'to sleep' it occassionally wakes up with a hang up on the wireless connection. It is easily regained by a simple re-boot, but in XP the 'repair network' function was very handy, and actually worked.
However, on Windows 7, the 'troubleshooter' is useless - it never repairs anything, indeed, when the connection is lost, it doesn't even highlight that the laptop has a wireless capability. Going into 'network adapter' also is useless as it doesn't show the 'wireless' connection either, so I can't even disable/enable it.
Is there a small utility program out there that actually works to regain an occassional wireless hang up??

Everything was working fine until yesterday when Sony VAIO update popped up from the task tray and prompted me to update a bunch of things, which I did. The entire process was automated as it was one of those system updates. After the update, I restarted computer, and then all the function keys stopped working. E.g.pressing FN + F1-12 won't do anything. Before the update I was able to use FN + F3/4 to adjust volume, but now nothing happens. Does anyone know what's going on? None of the updates failed to install and I restarted computer just like it said, and I'm assuming all updates that need to be installed will pop up in either Windows Update or VAIO Update? My Win update says my computer is up to date as well.
