Function Keys Not Working In Windows 7 After Updating?
Jul 22, 2011
I have a Sony VAIO with Win 7 64-bit, purchased around 2 months ago. Everything was working fine until yesterday when Sony VAIO update popped up from the task tray and prompted me to update a bunch of things, which I did. The entire process was automated as it was one of those system updates. After the update, I restarted computer, and then all the function keys stopped working. E.g.pressing FN + F1-12 won't do anything. Before the update I was able to use FN + F3/4 to adjust volume, but now nothing happens. Does anyone know what's going on? None of the updates failed to install and I restarted computer just like it said, and I'm assuming all updates that need to be installed will pop up in either Windows Update or VAIO Update? My Win update says my computer is up to date as well.
In am using Dell N5010 after i press the function keys the keys below that line that is numerical keys 1 to 10 and - & + (except backspace) are not working kindly advice what will be the reason
I have a HP Pavilion tx2500z (model: KD436AV) laptop with Windows 7 64 bit OS installed. Since last few months, I am not able to use default function keys (F1, F2...F12) and other keys at the top row of the keyboard, including Pg Up, Pg Down, Home, End, Insert, Delete. However, all the Action Keys available on these keys are working without pressing Fn Key (e.g. Sleep, Brightness, num lock etc). I get same Action Key behaviour even after pressing Fn Key.
It looks like, somehow system is locked in action key mode and I am not able to come out of it. I tried to upgrade Bios (currently on latest F.0F version) and also tried to disable the Action Key mode in BIOS, but Action Key mode is not available in BIOS of this computer. Even to enter BIOS, I faced problem because F10 key was not working to enter BIOS setup. I had to connect external keyboard to enter BIOS.
i have Toshiba a350-13a laptop , i installed windows 7 from 2 weeks . the function keys isn't working although i installed the Toshiba value added package which is responsible for activating function keys.
when i press F1.2.3.4. the functions like brightness/dull/mute,etc occur. whereas if i want to use shortcuts for F1,2,3 (like spell check in excel for shift +F7), i need to use fn key+F1/2/3. can i inter replace this function?
Installed Windows 7 and all going quite well. One problem which I can't resolve - the Fn/F3 (battery) and Fn/F10 (open disc drive) do not work. Fn/F2 to deactive wireless is OK.
I'm assuming it's a driver problem but I could be definitely wrong with this thinking.
i just had my system reinstaled with win 7 64bit professional, and can't find a way to disable the touchpad. i prefer to use a dedicated, and very handy usb mouse. i used to have windows home edition, on this hardware, and everything worked. just pressed Fn + F9, et voila: touchpad disabled, and just use the mouse..i noticed on device manager an unknown usb device, that keeps popping up. unpluged all devices (including the mouse), rebooted, and there it is again. weird, because all usb devices (pendrives, mouse, usb harddrives, usb wi-fi modem), seem to work ok. because of that, already updated the touchpad and usb drivers, to no avail.
i have a samsung np550p5c i kept getting popups of samsung updates and it did my head in so i updated them. they were about 7 updates and the ones i could remember were a bios, sound and graphics update.
when the updates were done it prompted me to restart which i did. when my laptop rebooted i got an error (ill post up a pic of it in a bit) now when i tried to change my brightness using the function keys they dont work
Something is wrong with my fn key and F1-F12 keys? Suddenly it seems like my F1-F12 keys are using different keys. For example, when I press F1, I get a screen output switch thing. F2 disables my wifi. F3 uses the A key. F8 uses my Q key, and F9 uses my G key. I want to use F5 to refresh web pages but it doesn't work. I am using a Dell Inspiron 17R N7110 model
keyboard keys 1, 2, 3,...0 & shift to get characters above them display wrong characters - the ALL display the same, & it's always the last other key typed...Dell inspiron 530 core 2 quad 6600. what caused this: had vista 32 bit home premium, upgraded to 7 home premium. it takes ONLY usb keyboards - tried 2 diff ones that work perfectly on my 2 other desktops. what's even more weird, go into ease of access center & put onscreen keyboard up, IT WORKS FINE! in addition, i accessed it through team viewer from my laptop, TYPES THE #'s FINE! i'm very knowledgeable with PC's as i refurb for resale - tried re-installing drivers, triple checked language & regional settings.
I got a new laptop at work and didn't realize that the manufacturer swithed the volume, brightness, etc keys with function [F1, F2] keys.Seems like a great idea for the average user, but unfortunately I use AutoCAD mostly and it relies a lot on the F keys. Every time I use one I have to hit (Fn)+(F1).

I use the auto scroll feature on my mouse frequently to browse web pages. Before upgrading to win 7 (and ie8) when activated I could scroll using the arrow keys on my keyboard. Since upgrading the arrow keys no longer work. You can only scroll by moving the mouse itself. That function is very important to me as it allowed me to keep my hand off the mouse reducing the aggravation of carpal tunnel syndrome. Any fixes? I am not sure if this is an IE8 problem or win 7 as I only use the function when browsing the web.
The problem likely started when I cloned my drive to a new Seagate drive using a Seatools *Seagate** utility, which I believe is actually made by Acronis. The final fix was installing new drivers for the Hard drive from Intel "Intel Rapid Storage Technology"
Symptoms = Failure code when trying to start indexing = 0x8e5e0247 Search function would not work properly Indexing was not working Could not get Windows update to install
windows 7 indexing is not running acronis clone Intel Rapid Storage Technology 0x8e5e0247 windows update not working
Win 7 professional 64 SP1 all patches applied till today. Some days ago I got a Definitions Update, like many others before. But this time it failed to apply with an numeric code. Since I don't have MS Security Essentials (never installed it for what I can recall) and just have free Avira, Spyware Blaster and Malware Bytes, it should not be disabled or something. After reading a number of posts on the MS forums I tried manually starting the defender service, which failed with error 126 (could not find its mpsvc.dll DLL). I noticed the required DLL, along with a couple others, was in Program Files, while the registry entry for it was set to %ProgramFiles (86)%\Windows Defender\mpsvc.dll. Not willing to fiddle with the registry, I just applied a .reg fix others on the MS support forums found useful to fix this issue with. But it did not help. The definitions update indeed worked but now the defender service won't start at all and shows as disabled (trying to start it does nothing, no error, no Windows logs in events viewer.
Just recently, when I go to mute the sound in Windows, it does nothing and sounds continues to still be played. The icon in my taskbar displays the red circle with the slash through it indicating that it has been "muted" when in fact it has not. I am still able to adjust the volume with the slider and that works fine, just not mute.
Recently I upgrade my system from XP to 7, but then today I messed something up so I figured I would just reinstall it because I figured it would be easier. I was able to load XP back on alright, but when I went to use the upgrade discs to 7 is when I ran into problems. When I put the disc in it says loading files, and there is a progress bar at the bottom, and when that's done I get the "starting windows" text but Windows never starts.

After updating my system from Windows Vista - 64 bit to Windows 7 Professional - 64 bit my function buttons along with my touchpad scrollbar and volume touchpad have stopped working.
So I just did a fresh install of windows 7 and now all of the sudden the search function, as far as I can tell, does not work. At all. I tell it to search for a simple file I KNOW is there and it does not bring it up. It brings up nothing. Infact it wont find anything on my computer at all. Seems 100% useless. So whats up with that? I never had issues with Windows search before, not with Vista, XP, or any other. is there a 3rd party search engine I can use to find stuff on my computer? I have almost 3TB of stuff, I can rarely remember where I have stored every single thing I would use.
Many months ago I spent countless hours trying to troubleshoot the Hibernate/Sleep function on Windows 7 and eventually gave up. I subsequently had to reinstall Windows 7 on a reformatted drive and to my amazement from that day on the Hibernate function has worked It has continued without major problems until 48 hours ago. Because of the past problems, I have routinely made manual restore points at regular intervals and whenever the Hibernate mode faltered I have been able to wind back to a working state. One thing which has regularly messed with the Hibernate function has been a program called LP Recorder, for recording vinyl LPs. Having some LPs to record on Saturday evening I created a Restore Point prior to starting. Yesterday, after all the LPs were transferred to CD, I restored to Saturday's Restore Point but this time I have not restored the Hibernate function. Worse still is the fact that all my previous Restore Points have vanished without a trace.Since I worked on the LPs, I have not made any other changes to the system I am running, no programs have been installed or removed, in fact I have really not done a lot on the computer.
