Installing And Updating Software Under Windows 7
Nov 8, 2009
I have two machines upgraded to Win 7 from Vista. On both machines there have been problems installing and particularly upgrading odd bits of software - but not neccessarily the same on both machines. So for example, on one machine Java works fine. On the other Firefox says that a java plugin needs to be installed, but then it won't install. They all seem to be access and permissions issues - and I suspect that the software installer wants to use some folders that Win 7 thinks it shouldn't be accessing. For example the Microsoft uninstaller wouldn't install because it needed access to a folder in the c:usersusername...

I recently bought a new AMD FX-8150 and installed it on my ASUS m5a97 mobo which has 24GB of ram. 2x4 and 2x8 of DDR3. Everything was moderately fine before I replaced my old CPU (AMD Phenom II x3) with the AMD fx-8150. After that, I couldn't play some of my games because apperently I needed to update my BIOS, which i recently did. thats when things got weird. I keep getting blue screens, mainly memory management so I ran a standard and extended windows memory diagnostic test and came up with no errors. I have not done prime or 86+ yet. I, personally, think there are some instability issues here despite the fact the cpu is on the supported list for my asus mobo. Also some other weird things have happened. My google chrome crashed in such a way that it corrupted my profile and i had to reinstall it and it would not save the favicons in my bookmarks bar. my xfire kept crashing, too. when i try uploading a file to the internet and browse to DESKTOP via a windows explorer window, chrome crashes. I've ran a full malyware scan with no threats and cleaned by registry with CCleaner, i do not know what else to do. I don't think reformatting will help since i believe this to be a hardware error.

On closing down, a new computer with Win 7 Pro 64 bit downloads 44 updates correctly and then switches itself off. On booting up the following morning, it tries to install them but fails to do so and reverts to previous installation. This has happened two days running. Does anyone have an idea what is happening and how to get round it

I used to try to keep all of my drivers up to date with the latest release. Earlier this year my video card died. I found out that there had been a bad driver released that altered fan operation. I think that may have been the real cause of the card failure.Since then I've wondered about that. I think if you're not having any issues maybe the best policy might be "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

After running Windows Update I hit the restart button and get the dialog "Windows is Configuring your Computer 15% Complete". Finally after a while it says "Shutting Down" with the spinning circle, but never shuts down. After 90 minutes or so I shut down with the power button. On restart I get the message Windows did not shut down normally. It only happens after the updates. Normally it shuts down fine

This is an old HP PC I have recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7 and I have to say it has never run betterI have an ASUSTek A7N8X-LA motherboard with ver. 3.05 BIOS and an AMD Athlonâ„¢ 2600+ processorI want to upgrade to the latest BIOS that supports SSE2 instructions (for game playing purposes), however, I have run into a snag that the most recent BIOS ver 3.21 is still only XP compatible. Neither ASUS or HP are willing to provide any free support. This is somewhat frustrating as the BIOS in situ appears to be the original 2003 version. I could have easily updated this to the latest version before I upgraded the OS to Windows 7, but now it is to late.

I'm looking to update my windows 7 home premium from 32bit to 64bit. My question is, will this affect all the partitions on my hdd? Its 1TB split into D:100GB for the OS, D:200GB for games and the other E: for music, movies etc.
I only ask because it would be a pain to back up everything or can I get away with just backing up the C: drive.

My main problem is I have a BD movie player that keeps reacting badly to windows updates. Yes I turned it completely off and did not have it connected to the net but somehow it found 1 rouge update that when I had no choice but turn it off it installed it. I have always hated updates but never has it caused me this much grief.

I'm wondering if anybody can help with the following.
I'm running Win7 Home 32-bit with all of the latest updates and also have the latest version of iTunes installed. I'm trying to connect an iPhone to my PC, via iTunes, but it is not recognised by iTunes, and I keep getting an error saying that it cannot read the iPhone.
However, the iPhone does appear in Windows Explorer (apparently as a camera, as I can read the DCIM file and look at the photos there), but as the iPhone is not jailbroken I cannot see any other files. The iphone is running iOS5.
From searching online, it appears that the problem may be that Windows thinks it is a camera, and has atatched a particular driver to it (an MTP driver). Others also suggest that I need to have the phone installed with a different driver (usbappl)
If I uninstall the phone or try and automatically update the driver then it says that there is no better driver.
I have also tried to specifically update it with the usbappl driver (by updaing the driver and using the "have disk" option and then browsing to where the usbappl driver is installed). In this case I get an error saying that "the folder specified doesn't contain a compatible driver for your device).
how I can get Windows to update with the correct driver, or some other way of getting iTunes to see the iPhone.

2 days ago, i bought a Netbook equipped with windows starter. I needed a cheap computing solution for college since i only need Word, Maple and Google chrome to make me happy during my free times at school. It's brand new and was equipped with Mcafee internet security 60 days trial which i took cause it was already installed and ready to work, anyway. I received message from windows update which i ignored for the last day since i didn't needed to use my netbook at all. I finally did the update today. And then. Boom. While rebooting, BSOD.(Reminded me of windows 98 and ME since i hadn't seen one in the last 10 years XD ). Memory dump, and rebooting. Then the apparently now famous Windows couldn't boot appeared and they offered me to try to run windows normally or to use the restore. I tried to run it again, which failed. So i did restored but now i'm still with the same problem while updating windows. I have checked on many forums but their similar problems are from 2010. And my netbook has been manufactured not two month ago since it's a new model.
What should i do fellow Windows 7 users?

First some info: Windows 7 Professional x64, Intel x58 Chipset So, looking in my device manager I've noticed that a lot of the stuff are not updated.i.e.: [URL] The date is still June 2006 According to DriverEasy they need to be updated: [URL] Other devices include the devices like these: [URL]First I tried to do the automatic update through device manager, but Windows insists that these are up to date.So then I went here: Intel Driver Update Utility Ran the auto detection and installed everything it says I needed. These are still not updated. Then I grabbed the download via DriverEasy, and placed the Windows 7 version of these in a folder, then pointed to them. Update still say the current drivers are up to date.

I want to say that this computer has the Windows 8 beta on it as its only OS. It's very clunky and full of bugs and whatnot and I want it off so I'm putting windows 7 on it and erasing everything on it. This shouldn't be a problem for these forums since everything I"m having problems with has nothing to do with the OS. Besides installing. now, basically this computers main parts are better than my own (it's not that great anyway) It's motherboard is x65 bit, it had 2 gb 800 mhz ram (my computer had the same amount but only 667mhz) it's processor is 3.00 GHz (mine is 2.3 GHz)So basically it's a better computer for the main parts. I've not looked at the PSU but I'm sure it's better aswell. The only thing that isn't better is the graphics card. It's a 7 series while mine is a 9. So, basically I want to put the best of my computer to this better one. Mine feels newer (since I keep it dusted so it sounds really smooth, while this one sounds a bit old. But either way I want to install windows on it. The only problem is that the BIOS is inoperable. When loading into the BIOS the keyboard no longer seems to work. Its light go off. But every once in a while on trying, I can get it into the boot menu so I can move it to put from CD rom. But at this point, no matter what, it won't let me scroll through the options. So naturally I went to google and came with some results that it could be the BIAS needing an update OR taking the CMOS battery out and allowing it to load default values. I tried the latter first, overnight actually. This brought it to default settings, but no luck. It didn't help the keyboard. Now, I'm on the "update BIAS" part. But I can't even seem to find the right update for this motherboard. I tried installing CPU-z but this Windows 8 needs framework to run the software since it's not made for W8. So I just look around on the MB myself and find the Model Number. It's D33C98. I googled it and mostly game up with Gigabyte results but I can't find BIOS updates for this model anywhere. I see manuels but I can't find much of anything for this MB.I thought about just putting the HD in my current computer and loading windows 7 on to it and putting back in the other one so I could just use my computers BIOS, but I've heard this isn't the best thing to do.

I am occuring a strange error when I use Windows Update on a fresh installation of Windows 7 Pro. What happens is that when I install the first batch major updates. which is around 100 security and straight updates before Service Pack 1. I restart Windows to install them and during Stage 3 my computer restarts and then goes back and finishes the installation. Then when I get back into Windows I have a Error in Event Viewer with the ID of 7023 stating that Windows Modules Install had exited with error code %%16405. Windows Updater says that everything installed correctly and has no failed updates and doesn't show a error. Searching the internet has only given me a few hits and the one suggested installing SP1 before updating which I did and did not stop this problem.

I got some serious problems. About one week ago I accidentally cut off power of my pc while he was updating. When rebooting I got nothing but a blank desktop image, unable to give any input (mouse, keyboard, control + shift + delete). Control + shift + delete made the screen go black, so I assume this was my computer "loggng off" (enter caused the blank desktop screen to appear again).
Normally I fix my computer problems myself, so I started to reboot in safe mode. This worked without flaws, I could start the system repair and startup repair. This however, made no changes (still got the blank desktop screen on booting windows in normal mode).
Then I decided to reinstall Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit entirely (on my ssd). There where a few problems (original installation cd wasn't recognized), but in the end (with someone elses cd), I got it running. I decided to start installing my motherboarddrivers (LAN, onboard VGA, ...). All went well. Then I installed the VGA drivers of my dedicated nVidia GTX 570, and there it went wrong; upon restart: same blank desktop. This time I had some input: I could right click on desktop, make new folders, go into configuration manager. But no cmd, no task manager, no msconfig, ...

I have a Sony VAIO with Win 7 64-bit, purchased around 2 months ago. Everything was working fine until yesterday when Sony VAIO update popped up from the task tray and prompted me to update a bunch of things, which I did. The entire process was automated as it was one of those system updates. After the update, I restarted computer, and then all the function keys stopped working. E.g.pressing FN + F1-12 won't do anything. Before the update I was able to use FN + F3/4 to adjust volume, but now nothing happens. Does anyone know what's going on? None of the updates failed to install and I restarted computer just like it said, and I'm assuming all updates that need to be installed will pop up in either Windows Update or VAIO Update? My Win update says my computer is up to date as well.

Win 7 professional 64 SP1 all patches applied till today. Some days ago I got a Definitions Update, like many others before. But this time it failed to apply with an numeric code. Since I don't have MS Security Essentials (never installed it for what I can recall) and just have free Avira, Spyware Blaster and Malware Bytes, it should not be disabled or something. After reading a number of posts on the MS forums I tried manually starting the defender service, which failed with error 126 (could not find its mpsvc.dll DLL).
I noticed the required DLL, along with a couple others, was in Program Files, while the registry entry for it was set to %ProgramFiles (86)%\Windows Defender\mpsvc.dll. Not willing to fiddle with the registry, I just applied a .reg fix others on the MS support forums found useful to fix this issue with. But it did not help. The definitions update indeed worked but now the defender service won't start at all and shows as disabled (trying to start it does nothing, no error, no Windows logs in events viewer.

So about 2 hours ago on my PC. I was playing WoW and had a hard crash and lock up. So I restarted my PC. Everything seemed fine. Just a mysterious crash. So I went on to updating my graphics drivers since it had been on my mind to do so. About half way into the update my desktop then crashed again. Only this time it cannot even get windows 7 64 bit to start up.Then I ran the Start up Repair program. I get a message that it cannot repair it automatically. On a history note. This PC has been pretty good to me. A few months back I had a bad run in where my RAM wasnt being read correctly and a simple re-docking fixed that. That was solved on this web forum as well. I don't know if its connected. Just a reference on history.Other then that I'm not exactly sure how to go about on fixing this. I've never had a problem where even Windows wont boot up. *Safe Mode does start up* Just not sure what to do.BSOD data is attached. I tried running perfmon / report in safe mode but I got an error.

This time I had some input: I could right click on desktop, make new folders, go into configuration manager. But no cmd, no task manager, no msconfig, ...
So, I thought: my VGA card broke down; and I tried another one (nVidia 9800GTX). Same problems.Fresh installation, now on a conventional 750GB HDD. Again: all went well, even installing the VGA drivers (note: I didn't install the mobo drivers by then). So I though: it's my ssd that broke down. Then I tried to install Windows 7 on my SSD again; runned like a charm. I first installed my nVidia drivers, then my mobo drivers and we're back at the blank desktop again. So: my last option was: clean install; VGA drivers, and only LAN-drivers (not internal VGA drivers for my mobo). This went well. So I thought it was all settled. I started doing Windows Update, and this is where it went wrong again: during Windows Update, my desktop went blank again (in the background). Now I really don't know what to do further. One of the error codes I got was: 80246005. I tried the catroot2 fix when I was still able to use CMD next time I installed Windows, but upon doing the updates, I got the blank screen again. Another note: upon booting, I am unable to go into safe mode: when using the arrow keys, nothing happens for some seconds, then suddenly, it jumps a few places (the amount of times I used the arrow keys), but then the counter is gone and enter doesnt work. To summarize:
- Windows Update doing really weird
- Driver conflict?
- I don't think my graphical card/hard disk broke down?
Update 1: Sometimes, when trying to reinstall Windows, I get a 0x80300024 error code, even though I just formatted and removed the hard drive.

I am building a computer for my friend, but I want to update all the drivers and tweak things before I hand the system over to him. After I'm done with the updates how do I enable the setup screen you get when you start a computer for the first time? The setup screen that asks you to name your computer an user account? Is this even possible as I would initially be creating a temp user admin account to do all the driver and windows updates, would I then be able to go back, delete the temp account and enable the setup screen so when he turns it on the first time it's as if it's a new retail computer he bought from the store.
