Install Time Difference Between Upgrade And Custom
Is the time to "Upgrade from vista to 7 supposed to be way longer then it would to do just a clean install? (For example, hanging at 18% for a while while installing during upgrade).

I have a few questions about installing Windows 7. (1) I'm preparing to upgrade my Windows XP Pro SP3 machine to Windows 7 Pro. I'm been planning my "attack" on this for several weeks now and recently settled on using Windows Easy Transfer and installing onto my current Windows partition. I understood that this would create a Windows.Old folder with all my old files and settings but that I would nonetheless have a "clean" install of Windows 7. However, this article on cnet.com leads me to believe otherwise: http://news.cnet.com/8301-19882_3-10386856-250.html?tag=TOCmoreStories.0. Essentially, the author seems to suggest that custom install "set up [his] computer more-or-less cleanly with Windows 7." He goes on to say that "I really wanted to do was re-format my hard drive and start from a blank slate on my computer," and that he eventually worked up the courage to simply reformat his partition (rather than install over it) reinstall Windows 7 again. This absolutely, positively, confuses me. What on earth is the difference between using the Custom Install option to upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7 and formatting the partition and installing clean? I thought using Custom Install was a clean install - am I missing something? (2) If I do elect to simply format my existing partition and install Windows 7 there, will I even be able to use that option since I am installing an "upgrade" version of Windows 7? The author in the article I linked to above was able to, and he notes that many others were able to as well, but he seems to make the suggestion that some have had troubles. Does anyone have any information on this? (3) Finally, I'd like to install the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Currently, I am using a 32-bit version of Windows XP. Will that limit my ability to install the 64-bit version of Windows 7?

Difference In Media Between Regular Upgrade And Family Pack
I have just spent the last three hours driving around from store to store to try to buy a copy of the Family Upgrade Pack for my kid's computers. No one had it at retail. I need to order it online but I'd like to get started on the installs now. Is it possible to use the media I already own (Win 7 Home Premium Upgrade), install it as a trial without the serial number, and then use the serial number that comes with the Family Pack that will be coming in the next few days? Weekends are best for these projects but they are looking for the upgrade asap.

Difference Between Free, OEM Upgrade Key And Retail Upgrade Key
Is there any difference between the "Free" upgrade key to be received for a new computer purchased during the qualifying period, and a retail upgrade key?The last information I had is that the "Free" upgrade from HP/Arvato will not be shipped until after 11/12/09.I have retail upgrades previously ordered from Best Buy. Can I use one of them to upgrade the new computer and use the "Free" upgrade to ugrade a different computer?

I do not get this "Drive options (advanced)" option -- does anyone know what the reason might be that it is disabled or how to enable it? If you want to create, extend, delete, or format a partition, click Drive options (advanced), click the option you want, and then follow the instructions. Click Next to begin the installation. (If the Drive options (advanced) option is disabled, you need to start your computer using the installation disc.)

I'm need to install custom non-pnp driver into system using inf file, but i can't find "Add/Remove hardware" or analogue. There is it in Seven? If it's not exist - how can i do this? This driver is a part of signal processing for one of the programsm which is vital for me.

Custom Install Error
ive got a dell xps 1530 laptop running on vista business 32 bit ,4gb ram, intel core 2 duo t5450 166ghz and a 250gb hd partitioned into 215gb os ntfs [c] 15gb recovery ntfs [d] 2.50gb media direct fat32 [f] 134mb unallocated and 2.50gb i want to upgrade to 64bit ive got a 64 bit windows pro upgrade disc from software4students ,ive tried to do a custom install and get the error code 0xe0000100 ,searched the web and read up on it ,can anyone give me any advice on how to install it,ive got no addional discs as the dell came with it all as a image on the hd,got the proper licences and keys tho.

D Drive After Custom Install
I did a custom install from vista to 7(32 bit) today. I deleted all old restore points through the space management, however, the partition reads a still mostly full. There is only 1.8gb out of 8.3 available. When I access the folder, there is nothing in there, even if I show hidden files. I believe it is remnants of my old vista recovery drive, which I did not erase prior to my upgrade and was always equally full to what it is now. How would I go about eliminating these files now so I can backup my new OS installation?

Custom Install With Notebook Without Drivers
I am trying to upgrade my Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 32 bit. Since my Vista is the home version and the win 7 I've purchased is professional, I have to do a custom install, which basically deletes all my programs and drivers. My notebook, however, didn't come with any drivers when I purchased it. All it asked me to do was make a recovery disk. So my question is, how do I find said drivers? I've downloaded a few off HP but do those require existing drivers or can I use those after the Win 7 installation? My main concern is my ATI Mobility Radeon 3200 and CCC.

Custom Install - Partition Creation
I installed Win 7 32 bit and posted several comments about this step in the install process. These comments are about the same area but with the 64 bit version.  In both versions at the custom install step during installation, I deleted the current partitions for disk 0 where I install the operating system and programs. For 32 bit Win 7 created Partition 1 with 200 MB for Bitlocker plus Partition 2 for the operating system. I did not note the description for disk 2 (Data Drive) as I did not change it. For the 64 bit system the display was distinctly different and follows:  Disk 0 Unallocated space 0 MB; Partition 1 100 MB; Partition 2 149 GB; Disk 0 Unallocated 0 MB Disk 1 Partition 1 298.1 GB. I beleive that there are several inconsistencies in the 64 bit bersion. Why show 0 MB unallocated space? Why show Disk 0 twice and not disk 0 and disk 1?Also I do not believe that I formatted partition 1 after I created the new partitions. I did a double take when the install process began to execute after the partition creation. I know I formatted the partitions under the 32 bit version. I do not know if I had to format the partition.Â

Custom Install Issue - No Device Drivers
I downloaded the student edition of windows 7 Home Premium, I am currently running Vista Ultimate so cannot do an upgrade and have to do a custom install. I downloaded it fine, ran it, it opens up fine with the blue windows 7 opening screen, I select install, then select custom install. In the next window I have an empty white box which I presume is supposed to list my HD's allowing me to select where I want to install Windows 7. None of my HD's are showing up, I'm given the option to browse or scan, when I select this it gives me the message- No device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK Any suggestions?

Win 7 Custom Install, Results In A BSOD
I've created a custom version of Windows 7 Ultimate RTM because I'll have to install it on several pc's and didn't want to install the software manually. So I started to install the programs on a virtual pc and used this guide to create an iso. I did this in windows xp, so instead of using the in-built vhd-attach tool I used WinMount . Then, I used imageX to create the install.wim. After that, I replaced the install.wim of an original Windows 7 RTM dvd and burnt the dvd using ImgBurn and this tutorial . Because the install.wim is to big to fit on a normal dvd, I had to burn it on a dual-layer dvd+r. Rebooted system, started windows setup from dvd, chose the partition I had already prepared, and installed windows 7 without any problems. But, after setup, getting ready for the first boot, after the drivers are loaded and the red part of the windows logo starts to appear, it shows me a bsod and I cannot continue. A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0x80786B58, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) I followed the advices that were given, but there weren't any virusses on my drive, I did not change my hard drive (controller) and chkdsk end with no errors.

Custom Install And File On The C: Root Drive
I just did a custom install from Vista to Windows 7 with an upgrade disc. After completing the setup, deleting windows.old, and reinstalling all of my programs, I noticed that there were old folders on the C: drive. It is as if it didn't move anything from the root drive to the windows.old file. I'm annoyed at myself for not noticing it sooner. Now I don't want to do another install since I spent all that time reinstalling the programs and configuring them for personal use. I'm tempted to go in and just delete the old folders from the root drive, but I'm nervous. Honestly, I can't be certain of what should and shouldn't be there. Is there anyway I can tell which folders on the root drive are leftovers? I thought about deleting according to the date modified stamp, but I'm not certain that is safe either. Can anyone advise me? I really don't want to do another install of Windows 7, but I was pretty excited about starting with a true clean slate. I just can't help but wonder what else it left behind.

Custom Upgrade - Advanced Options Greyed Out
I have 2 hard drives in a Raid 0 configuration. On this configuration, I have 2 partitions, C and D. C currently has Vista on it. booted from win 7 64bit disk. Select Custom. Select advanced options and highlight the C partition. All of the advanced options are greyed out (format, delete, etc). If I select the D partition, all the advance options are available, but obviously I don't want to install to the D drive. Does anyone have any thoughts as to why the options are greyed out on my C partition? could it have to do with the Raid 0? It came from Dell like this.

Install Wont Recognize Any Hard Drives During Custom Installation
I am having trouble trying to install windows 7 64 bit rc. I have already dual booted windows 7 32 bit on this computer with Vista 32 but wanted to take full advantage of the RAM so deleted Windows 7 32 bit. When I try to do an install from the installation disk I get to the point where I select custom installation and when the next screen comes up it is not recognizing ANY of my hard drive partitions. I have went in and made sure the partitions appear to be correct. I am on a Dell Lap with an AMD Turion 64x2 with 4GB of RAM. I am not sure what is causing this as I have also installed windows 7 on my desktop and haven't had any trouble. As I stated previously I have also installed on the computer I am currently having the issue's with but deleted to install the 64 bit version. Does anybody have any idea's why its not recognizing my hard drive. Any help or idea's would be greatly appreciated. Oh and by the way been running windows 7 on both of my pc's for about 3 months now and it is GREAT!!!! I hope I can get the 64 bit installed to take advantage of the extra RAM (even though its only a little more that half a GB). Also has anybody been able to download Java on windows 7 yet. I havent tried for a while now but was unable to a while back.

Custom Install Win7 On XP Pro/Vista XP Dual Boot
I have just discovered that I cannot do an Upgrade from Vista HP to Win 7 Pro and that I will have to do a Custom or clean install. That will be OK and doesn't cause any problems. I have XP on one HDD and Vista on another with dual boot. However I want to replace Vista HP with Win 7 Pro 32 bit, ( I intend to go 64 bit later on). What I would like to know is, will Win 7 replace Vista on the boot sequence (MBR?), so that on booting the PC I have the option of selecting either XP or Win 7, or will I be presented with a boot menu of XP, Vista and Windows 7, albeit that Vista is no longer installed? If the latter, will this cause any problems in selecting the OS that I want to launch i.e the MBR looking for a now non existing Vista and would there be a way to remove reference to Vista?

Different Errors Every Time When Trying To Install Win 7
I am experiencing different problems when trying to install Windows 7 One is. During "Loading windows..." i get a bluescreen saying "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" Another is. I got into the installation program but immediately i get the error dialog: "The exception unknown software exception (0xe0000100) occurred in the application at location 0x75e59617" Last time I tried several times, and got messages like UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME several times, and sometimes got something similar to mboot.dll being corrupted or some such.. The 2nd out of a total of 3 attempts I made right now actually got me into the installation process, I was able to do everything until I got to the partition format/selection step, at which point I decided to abort at my own discretion, because I'm paranoid about winding up with an unbootable, uninstallable disk partition... Any help would be appreciated. The only way I see this being "fixed", is by buying another disk to use specifically for Win7, and then formatting my current OS partition after successfully installing on that...

Long Time To Upgrade From Vista
I have a Gateway quad core Intel with all the usual trimmings.Vista home premium with not too much but the normal amount of programs and devices.I am trying to upgrade Vista with Win7RC...I am at the last step listed of "tranferring files, settings, etc." Stuck for the past four hours at 62%. Went throught this once before (63%) and gave up at 12 hours and restored Vista.Ummm, anyone have any ideas? Keep waiting? It could really still be working?

Vista To 7 Upgrade - Slow Boot Up Time
I upgraded from Vista to 7 and I noticed my boot up time is very slow. I went ahead and tried the "time your windows 7 boot up" and apparently takes 194 seconds for my computer to boot. I was thinking maybe if I did a clean install instead of just an upgrade that 7 would work faster but I wanted to know if that would actually be the case before reformatting.

how long is the normal shipping time when you do a upgrade from vista to windows 7. i got a computer for Christmas and it had vista and i did the whole windows 7 things and i cant do it digitally i have to wait for the cd. Does anyone know how long it would take to get here i got it from Microsoft.
