How To Install XP On Unallocated Disk Space

Feb 18, 2012

I have a Getac B300 laptop running W7Pro on a single partition. Through a rather bizarre mix of nostalgia and my love for sheer simplicity, I somehow got it into my head that I wanted to run an XP Pro installation on the same machine.

The next station of this (surely flawed ) thought process led me to wonder whether I could do just that with the already existing Windows 7 installation. I got around to shrinking the C: partition, which netted me some 51 gigs of free space that I figured I could use to create a new partition on which to install XPPro. So far, so good.

As you'd expect by now, simply sticking the XP CD into the DVD drive and restarting the machine just won't work: I got the "XP can't see the hard drive" message. So, armed with Google as my friend, I ended up educating myself about how to use nLite to create a copy with integrated iaahci and iastor. Problem is, Having prepared three copies already, after I start the installation sequence and the XP CD installer starts loading files, I'm ending up with the message "the file iastor.sys could not be found," even though I did make sure to include the file that I downloaded from somewhere in the integration process.

So what am I missing here? What am I doing wrong? (I know that the whole concept is "wrong," but there you have it.)

Here are some of the specs of the machine in question:

Getac B300
32-bit W7P SP1
320GB Toshiba MK2555GSX ATA HDD
3GB RAM
ICH8M chipset.

Can't Extend Partition C Into Unallocated Space On Separate Internal Disk?

Jan 28, 2013

I read up a bit on this on other threads but none of them are exactly specific to my issue.I need to expand my C partition by utilizing the free unallocated space on disk D (a separate disk) that I just made by deleting the only partition on there.I guess this is not possible through windows disk management tools but I didn't want to start downloading any 3rd party software for this before I got some guidance from here. lease take a look at the following screen and let me know if using the 238.38GB of unused (unallocated space) I can extend the C partition without having to delete that partition, having to backup the files on it or making images. I already backed up everything I had on the D partition and then went ahead and deleted it through the computer management tool.

I have a set up with one SSD for windows 7 x64 and two Seagate Barracuda Green ST1500DL003 1.5TB HDD 3.5"

Without raid0 all is going well, when I raid0 the two Barracuda I have better performance but I have a huge unallocated space of 746.53 GB On Windows 7 disk management the I do not have any option for the unallocated space, as all options are grey out when I right click.

When I log off windows and delete the raid0, I can see all 2795 MB of the space, if I raid them again I end up with 746 GB space which I cannot add as a simple volume nor expand the other volume.

Failed To Create Partition : No Unallocated Space?

Oct 22, 2011

Yesterday I tried making partitions in my hard disk, and I failed Here's what I did:

1. run compmgmt.msc

2. Shrink C: drive

3. my hard disk' capacity shrunk from 451GB to 260GB

4. an error window appeared ("I/O device error" I think)

5. it left me no unallocated space to create partition

using compmgmt I can't extend my hdd back to 451GB, so I used MiniTool partition wizard to restore it (btw, shrinking with MT PartitionWiz resulted the same, no unallocated space)

Unable To Create Partition On Unallocated Space

Dec 31, 2012

I bought a 3TB hard drive for my gf and did a fresh install of Windows 7. When I was creating the first partition the Win7 install auto created two more volumes, both labeled as Unalloated. I thought nothing of it as I figured I would be able to merge/create my second partion with the remaining space once Windows was up and running. However, to my dimay I can not create a partition on one of those random Unallocated volumes. I've tried to delete all partition but the one that my OS is running on and I've tried to create two then merger but when I right-click on the second (first one works) volume the option t create a simple volume is greyed out.

Hard Drive Suddenly Appearing As Unallocated Space

Dec 23, 2010

I have been running a Dual-Boot Setup of XP Pro and WIN 7 successfully for some weeks while I get familiar with Windows 7. Recently I have almost exclusively been booting into WIN 7. In this D.B. Setup The booted OS appears as Primary Partition on the C: drive with the non-active OS as "Unallocated Space " on the D: drive. This all happens on the No 1 Hard Drive. No 2 Hard Drive has been partitioned into several Partitions, the First one as a Primary Partition with the remaining Partitions as Logical drives.

Today , when I booted into WIN 7 , there was no sign of the second hard drive and its Partitions even although both drives (Serial Drives) were recognised in the initial part of the Bios screen during this bootup. When I looked in Disk Management, I saw that the first Partition on the second hard drive appeared normally as a Primary Partition but that all remaining space on this drive was shown as "Unallocated Space". I then re-booted into the XP OS . This showed the second hard drive and all its Partitions normally, i.e. with its first Partition as the Primary and all subsequent ones as Logical Drives.

Create A New Volume With Unallocated Space On 3TB Hard Drive?

Nov 13, 2011

I currently just set up my new build. I decided to go with Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB for my hard drive. However, I split the hard drive into two parts: 2 TB and roughly about 770 GB unallocated space. I installed Window 7 on 2TB partition. Now, I decide to use the rest of 770 GB of unallocated space. I tried to use Computer Management, but it doesn't give me the option to create a new volume from unallocated space. Similar thing happened with EaseUS Partition Master. With Acronis Disk Director, it doesn't even recognize the unallocated space at all!!! So how can I create a new volume or even merge it with my C drive? Do I have to reformat my hard drive and split them again and do a clean installation again?

Note:I already checked, my BIOS recognizes my hard drive with 3 TB. The unallocated space is right after my C drive. There is only 1 primary MBR partition (C drive), and 100 MB system files right before it.

Adding Unallocated Space To Primary Storage Partition

Jan 15, 2013

Previously my machine was dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu. It worked fine with no problems until I decided that I didn't use nor want Ubuntu on my machine. Disk space was getting low for my primary partition and I decided it was time to let Ubuntu go. Anyhow long story short I cleared the two partitions that Ubuntu was using through the 'disk management' tool in windows. I didn't think at the time that GRUB would be stored within these partitions and that lead to the problem of being unable to boot anything.

I made and used a repair disc via another machine and then restored the bootsector code with it. That fixed the problem of being unable to boot. Now my problem is that I'm left with around 3-4 GB of wasted space in a partition. I was wondering if this 3-4 GB could be added to my primary storage partition? I've looked everywhere in the disk manager but I can't find anything there. I'm unsure as to if there is some 3rd party software available that could fix this? That 70GB partition shall remain undisclosed.

Language Pack Uninstall/Install & Disk Space?

Aug 14, 2011

I am trying to free space in my HD and I when through the uninstall process of all the additional languages I had initially installed (lpksetup) and after clicking on all the languages I wanted to uninstall the system estiamted that I would recover about 8GB. The uninstall went through fine bu I did NOT recover any space, actually the disk utilization went up by about 3GB after windows removed all the additional languages. Then I decided to re-install all the additional langugae just to see if the free space in the HD would increase by 3GB. Well... the free space went down one more time, now by about 6GB. So my HD has additional 9GB of data on it. I have no idea what to do or what folderm, temp file to delete.BTW I already tried:Disk Clean Up Delete all the temp files in all users in AppDataTemp I turned off hibernation before I started all this process I ran windows washer and delete all the temp, cookies, interenet, etc files My laptop has always been running an AV, Spyware so this is not a Virus or Spyware. I already scanned also with Malware Bytes.Any temp folder I should take a look to delete any additional file(s) that are temp or not needed?
