Is there an easy way to determine what files an installation has created ? More specifically i am interested in drivers that have been installed. I know i could do a 'before' and 'after' on various folders or i could turn on windows installer tracing but the product i'm interested in is ALREADY installed.
Something very strange has started happening in Windows Explorer. When I cut and paste image files into different folders, it does copy everything but for some reason, a few tmp files are being created as well. Every time I copy stuff, I have to delete about 5-6 of them.Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? It's started in the past few months and I've been hoping it would stop but it hasn't.
2-week old Sony I7 laptop operating okay but slow and odd things not working correctly. Example is selecting START-Printers & Devices..>No icons shown despite working printers, external drives, etc..Slow overall considering horsepower of system and since OEM software my backup boot disks self-created likely to have same errors? I have run Cleaner which I have now read although fine product that it is NOT recommended to run any. Question is is it best to get all registry errors corrected by smart tech folks or just bite bullet and get a known good Win 7 disk and install it new?
I use WMP 12 to rip cd's to the WMP library. I insert the disc and rip it in WAV format. After the rip is complete, the last song on the CD appears in a separate folder that does not transfer to a media player with the other songs in the primary folder. The last song appears as Unknown artist and title.
I had to use the Dell Back up and Restore to rebuild my OS and , except for all my email history, address book, profile and bookmarks, I seem to be up and running again. I want to back up to a WD MY Book 1tb external on a regular basis so I don't loose all my programs and profile.
I followed the easy instructions I found here on the Forum for a full system backup and watched the green bar progress to 10-15% complete and left the room. When I returned hours later the screen said "improper shut down" or something similar. When I rebooted there was a backup folder on my external but folder properties indicated it was completely empty.
The next day I tried to create a System Image Bup (Shadow Copy?) and the green bar progressed normally but, when I returned to the PC, the black dos screen said unable to find some file to boot. Again, folders were created but they were empty.
Does Windows 7 BU and restore normally restart the computer after creating a backup file? If so, can I prevent this so I can see where the program is breaking down?
I did create a System Repair disk on a DVD and it seems to have created that okay. The file is almost 300mb so I hope that means it will work if I ever need it.
I do know this new MY Book is a lot more complicated than my other Seagate external and seems to want to format and name files for me?
Upgraded W-XP64 to W7HP64 in August. Machine was set up with 3 hard drives in Nvidia RAID as a STRIPE. Installed a game that actually installed ok but gave BSOD. Went into safe mode and removed the game and system is working fine. I ran MSE and MBAM with nothing but tracking cookies found. Then I created a restore point but noticed that there were no others. So I rebooted and created another one. System still saying there are no restore points. So I ran CMD as admin and ran VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWS which came back "no items found that safisty the query". I can create restore points but they are not being saved by the system. I increased the size of the 30 to 65GB, rebooted and created another restore point, which also did not get saved. I've read about dual boot problems with XP, but that is not the case as I UPGRADED to Windows 7 OVER XP...over the 3 drives. Does RAID prevent the system from saving restore points? If that's the case why is it letting me create them in the first place?
Suddenly, whenever I copy anything in Word 07, the copied text is bracketed with square brackets. They are gray color, and they are not reflected in the clipboard contents, so I believe they are non-printing characters.I have never had this happen before, and can't figure out what is going on.This occurs when using the mouse or CTRL-c to copy. It shows in Print, outline, and Web views.

I have a problem that seems to only effect the 32 bit version of my IE. When I run it, it automatically creates a file on the desktop. This file is unknown to windows and is differently named each time. Currently the example I have for you now is It. The names that it creates are usually close to that one. No extension at the end, just that. When I open this file, it asks the usual, what do I want to use to open it, when I get it open this is what it contains,

This does not happen when I use the 64bit version and I would just use the 64bit version but it does not support some websites. It has not always done this, only after a few weeks after install it started.
I have a problem with the folders in windows explorer in windows 7.Often windows explorer automatically creates unwanted folders who I cant recognize. Often some folders have been splitted in 2 or more folders. One example is that it had been created 2 folders of my "bon jovi"-folder. One of them has the original name "bon jovi" and the new folder has the name "jon bon jovi". Strange behaviour by windows explorer.Or just one file is saved in a folder and a subfolder, which have names based on the files name, often the artist and album. If I download one file, I want it saved in "my music"-folder "bare", not hidden in 1 or 2 folders.Suddenly, after 15 mins or so, a lot of new unwanted folders appeared in "my music" with subfolders and just one mp3-file. The new folders were created just some minutes ago. The numbers of folders in "my music" has increased much. Many of the mp3-files are downloaded from dc++, but the settings in dc++ is correct. The files are saved in "my music"-folder.Ive tried to change the foldersettings in windows explorer, f.ex organise -> reset folders, but it doesnt help
i've been spending ALOT of time reading and soaking up information, trying to learn as much as i can about how all this glorious tech stuff works..my next goal: to be able to determine how to identify which type of wifi i need to use, B/G/ or N so ive learned a fair bit about the IEEE 802.11 set of standards. From previous threads, i was instructed to make sure i only broadcast for the types of devices i have.
I have multiple users, all remote and I have another machine I need to load with Windows 7, I know one of the retail versions of windows 7 I have has yet to be used, just not sure which one..Other than walking all users through the process of checking product codes to find which one is not in use I was hoping there is a way online where I can enter the product keys and it will tell me which have been activated and which have not been?Anyway to do that?I know I can install one and try to activate it, but I also know if I format and reload a machine it will let me activate that version of windows as many times as I want on that machine to so it's not going to tell me if it's in use or not right away, instead it will just hose one or both machines if it is in use already
Hard drive in 2009 Satellite P500 series notebook, Windows 7 Home Premium X64, is pre-Advanced Format Drive. The 2008, 500 GB Hard drive failed with SMART warning at every boot. (Pre-Advanced Format Drive) Replace with new 500 GB HDD (AFD) Advanced format. Repair with Toshiba supplied 3 Disc set "Recovery Media Satellite P500 series"... Boot okay, no network, Device Mgr shows 6 yellow exclamation marks, but properties all show "The device is working properly". Download latest drivers and install... no change in symptoms. Scrounge up another 2008 (320 GB) Hard drive, and the Recovery Media installs fine. System boots and everything is working great.Image Backup with three different programs, (PQ Drive Image (GHOST), Acronis, Active@Disk Image)Restore to new 500 GB (AFD) hard drive Continue to configure and customize system, and install all the latest updates. Install again, the new AFD hard drive into computer. Machine seems okay.. Use it for a couple days. Discover that Windows Update does not work. Says service is not running. but it is. I spent most of a day trying to resolve. can't fix it. Download an install a stand-alone fix does not work either.
I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate and my problem is windows cant determine ISO image,,it asking me to go internet....it started when i install Active@iso burner and burn some disk and after uninstalling Active@iso burner Windows 7 cant determine the ISO image file.
This is going to show what a novice Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit user I am. From previous information such as a 200 MB System Reserve area that this must be an early version. Since I've installed it I've downloaded all Microsoft updates. Can anyone tell me how to find the exactly what Windows I have, the SP level and revision. What is a K or a KM? I've never specifically was prompted to make this version change from a trial version. It has been authenticated by Microsoft.
How do I determine which is the speed of my AGP graphics card? I have a GTX 460 and I do not know at what speeds do. I tried to find it in the BIOS, and I failed. Motherboard MSI neo V2.
I've just assembled a pc using different parts from old computers. For some reason my pc will turn on, but my screen just stays black. I've tried several graphic cards, nothing. How do I determine if its really the motherboard failing without a screen ?
I have four USB ports on the front panel and four on the rear panel of the case. I have two "Enhanced" USB controllers. How can I determine which of the four USB front panel ports are USB 2.0 ??
I clicked on Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers. Five members of the Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) were listed. One of the five was described as a USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 27CC.
My PC has 3 USB ports. How can I determine which is the Enhanced port? What if I plugged a USB Hub into a port other than the enhanced one, would it work better or not at all?
Lately I've been having some unusual network traffic. I've checked with Network Monitor 3.4 and the process name is either svchost or system or unknown. How can I find out what generates the traffic ? There were mainly TCP packets, but others too.I don't expect to solve the problem for me, just want some guides that you might know of, or tools to analyze network traffic, or some info on how to interpret Network Monitor frame details.
I have a brand new computer that I just built with the following basic specs:

I'm just trying to figure out what exactly is hanging my reboots and shutdowns. I get to the shutting down screen in no time but it just sits there for like 2 minutes then shuts down or reboots. Obviously something that is not expected and kind of annoying.
My Windows Explorer keep "not responding" everytime I boot up my computer and click "My Computer" icon. This happen after I install Auslogics Boostspeed and Wintools.net. I have uninstalled both software but the problem still there. I end the process (explorer.exe)via Task Manager and re-run explorer. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it doesn't, or need to re-run the process to make it work.
Then, I switch to Safe Mode. Windows Explorer runs fine. Now, I know something that is running on "services.msc" cause the Windows Explorer to crashed. I downloaded SlimComputer from Softpedia.com and run its Optimizer. I set it to SuperCharged and some of the services changed to manual. I restart my computer and the problem solve. I change the setting again to its original, the problem appear again, then change to SuperCharged back, the problem fixed. How to determine which process/services is causing the Windows Explorer to crashed?
I clicked on Device Manager > Other Devices > Mass Storage Controller. Under Device Status it said, "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)."
I don't know what device they are talking about. All the storage devices on my PC seem to be working. Why does DM think there is a Mass Storage Controller at location PCI bus 7, device 1, function 2? I clicked on Update Drive - search failed to find a driver and suggested none needed. I clicked the Uninstall button and the message dissapeared until I rebooted the system.
Can somone tell me why Windows 7 might think there is a Mass Storage Controller on my PC?
i m trying to link my hearing aides to my blu tooth capable devices. Can anyone tell me how to determine if my Acer Aspire 5742 has blu tooth and how do i turn it on?
I have a few small .exe files that I received by e-mail. When I click on them to install the program I get a message saying Windows is preventing running the file for security reasons. I know the file is free of viruses and want to install it. I am told there is a setting somewhere to turn this security feature "off"--I am the only user of my PC and want this annoyance turned off.
I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on a stand-alone PC with a hardwired Internet connection (no router).
I've built a brand new PC and decided that I would like to install windows 7 64 bit on my SSD, I got a disk+key from my university before christmas so that'd i'd be ready once i'd built it.
I built the PC yesterday and realised that I'd left my external DVD drive at my university accommodation, I'm at my parents house for christmas break so that's a few weeks left. I can't really wait that long so I used my parents laptop (which I'm posting from now) to turn the disk into an .iso and use the microsoft USB utility to make a USB stick that i could install from.
However when I tried the install gets to 'installing features' and gives 'windows cannot install required files' error code 0x80070570 I looked the code up on google which sent me to a lot of threads here, so far I've tried:
Taking all but 1 stick of ram out and the graphics card. Reseting the bios to default Installing again without rebooting after error. using cmd to select the right partition
