Apr 28, 2012I wouldn't go so far to say, I'm totally computer illiterate, but not far from it.. If there's anyone out there, who's up for a challenge I'm running windows 7. I am the administrator. Someone I don't trust at all, used my PC a while back. After he (did whatever he did) I noticed I couldn't access several files. I get a "access denied" or you don't have permission to view this file, owner info etc.. I can see a lot of the files, but their either empty now or I can't view them. I have used restore many times in the past, but now I get a message " no restore points".. I don't know what he did, or if he did anything.. It could be one of my kids changed properties by mistake, before I wised up and created a basic user acct w/ limited access for them.. I almost forgot. When I go into file properties there is a red x by my user name (administrator) Not in every property, but several.. Sometimes there is a red x by other user names, as well, but mostly mine.

Sep 19, 2012I have a Dell Inspiron 15R 5520.Previously when booting windows and rapidly pressing F8 and then choosing repair computer there was an option to restore the factory image on the repair menu.I then installed a clean windows retail disk and now when I press F8 and choose repair the Dell Datasafe restore option is gone. The recovery partition is intact and still contains the Factory.wim image.Is there anyway I can get this menu back or restore the factory.wim without it?

Feb 8, 2012i have recently format my windows partition on my laptop and installed the windows 7 again.the problem is one of my partitions lost . when im going to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>computer management > disk management i can see my "c:" partition with different capacity as shown in image below.this partition was 100 gb before and the lost partion was 120. what i can see here a total of those two in down . i need my data on the other partition. is there anyway i can see those and make backup ?

Mar 16, 2012Had a power failure during a recovery of an Acronis backup on my C: drive. It seems it happened while Acronis just started loading the backup files? When I restarted the Samsung Laptop local drive C: did not appear in Explorer. Only drive D: and my DVD drive E: appeared (C an D are partitions on the same hard disk). The recovery software was on a hidden partition but when trying to use the Samsung Recovery facility it say Drive C: not found.After trying out suggestions found on the internet I only managed to screw everything up resulting in also loosing the D: drive containing my Acronis backup. The laptop did not start at all. I at last managed to get it going after installing Windows 7 again and I then sit with only C System Disk, D System reserved and E: DVD drive at that point.Foolishly I shrinked the system disk C and created a data disk. That disk is now Data Disk F. and not D as original.The Acronis backup containing all my files and data was on the original Data Disk D:I have used various free software to try and find that specific file. But they all search by drive and the missing file must be somewhere on the disk either as lost or wrong drive letter or something.

But I found out (too late) that according to Microsoft, System Restore done in Safe Mode is not able to be undone.I lost 1,000's of photos doing the system restore, now the only restore point option visible is what I believe to be the new one after I did the restore. Prior to me doing the System Restore, there were a number of times from me to choose from, I just chose one that was 10 days ago. Is there any software, method, or hack that I can use or do to recover the thousands of photos that were on my desktop and that were in folders on my desktop? It's a 1 TB HD?

Jun 12, 2011Ive been buisy lately, but now i hav some time to fix a problem. ever since ive reinstalled windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, i havnt been able to see my external HDD in "my computer". ive looked in device manager and its there, and when i first plugged it in, it installed drivers perfectly. but nothing happened after that. Ive tried another HDD and that also dont work, but both are preforming normally on my other pc, so im lost. it seems that flash drives work perfectly on laptop, but not hard drives.

Jul 3, 2011I have my laptop partitioned into 2 drives. One for system and one for everything else.On my system drive i have 60Gb and the D drive is 300ish. I have started to get the "Low resources" message on the C drive. I have looked around everywhere for the 60gb's and it gone. Vanished into thin air.I navigate to C:users and check the properties. it says there is 35gigs being used. Inside there userskcameron - thats me - it says used 34gigs.When i check through all of the libary folders inside i cannot find more then a few megs of stuff. so 34gigs is being used, but i cannot find it.anyone have any ideas, or tools i could use to check this out? Its to the point where i cannot open many things without the system getting angry. I could always re-format, but other then this problem everything else is find.

Aug 21, 2009I just reinstalled and it seems my D drive that has all my data, and i use for my docs. Has lost ownership i guess. First noticed because FF wouldnt download to it, to my downloads folder. Next tried to extract something and it wouldnt work.
I can delete but have to hit continue, on the prompt that says it needs administrator access.

Drive Share Lost After Every Restart
Dec 23, 2011I use a Drobo and I used to have it map on My host PC using letter I: but since it was causing drive letter conflicts I changed the drive letter to Z:. Ever since I did that my Drobo will lose its drive share every time restart. I can share it back out and it retains the individual folder shares I set up. But this was never and issue before. Is there a way to make a drive letter a permanent share or make a startup script to share the drive letter?

For example if I purchase a 500 GB hard drive can I restore that image to the new drive? Will it partition the C from the B on the new drive or just show it as seperate folders?
Does the new drive have to be greater than the sum of the allocated/unallocated space on both drives even though the image is less than 500GB?

However, I have always been able to do this when I attempted it previously, so I am not sure what made this time different, but after i clicked on internet explorer, everything i had open got immediately closed, my screen flashed black, and when it was back at my desktop, all my icons were gone aside from Recycling bin, Microsoft Word, and Powerpoint, and like 50 little message windows opened one after the other saying that files may have been lost because of damage done to the C drive. I cannot preform a system restore because it says there are no previous restore points, and all of my files (documents, pictures, downloads, music, programs) are no longer on my computer for some reason? Is this just a problem with my C drive that can be fixed and restored? Or are all of my files gone for good? Also, my PCtools Spy Doctor ran a scan and said: Adware.BHO.GEN (20 Infections) - High Threat.

Jul 3, 2011I had a message about errors when I plugged in my WD external hard drive. I let the Error Checking run and when it finished it said I needed to format the disk. I cancelled this and looked in my computer and although the drive appeared, no details (i.e. space usage) was present.
I re-ran Error Checking with "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" checked. After running this the drive appeared properly in My Computer.
However there are many files missing, and the space usage of what is there doesn't match up with what my computer says.
Files I can physically see: ~ 120 Gb. Space usage according to Explorer: ~420 Gb. So it looks like tha data may still be there but Windows can't see it? Edit: BTW, forgot to say, all this is booted into Windows 7 not XP on my dual boot system.

Dec 2, 2011So I bought a windows 7 netbook a few months ago, and within the first couple of weeks it caught a big virus and almost nothing in the computer was working anymore.So I panicked and since this was the only computer I had, I downloaded a copy of linux, put it on a bootable USB and installed Linux over windows 7. Then eventually I made another bootable USB for windows 7, and I put it in and it only showed one hard disk where it was possible to install windows, and it was the C drive with only 97 gigs of memory (the computer actually has 250 gigs). So I installed windows over linux and now Im wondering where is the rest of my hard drive?

I have never had a problem before.The drive is from a True crypt encrypted file - I can mount the drive by entering the password to True Crypt, no problem. It mounts, shows up as local disc Q:, but when I click on it, it will not open and I get a message saying 'You don't currently have permission to access this folder'.When I follow the directions to security, and access the properties, I add my user name and tick full control but it the says:An error occured when trying to share Q, access is denied. The shared resource was not created at this time.I have also tried giving permission to 'Everyone' but the same thing happens.(This is complicated by the fact I have been having other problems today.Basically,I used HP Support Assistant to download updates for my laptop, since then I cannot open the devices and printers box - it just hangs and does not populate. I have done system restores, followed instructions from this forum about turning on bluetooth support, printer spooling, resetting explorer, but nothing has worked.
