How To Factory Restore A Dell Inspiron 620
Jan 13, 2012
I've recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 620 for my mum and dad and in the past when the system is running slow or encounters problems I back up everything on to an external hard drive and run a factory restore for them. However i'm struggling to establish how to run a factory restore on the new computer? I've pressed F8 when the machine boots up and selected 'Repair your computer' but the only recovery options I have are shown in the image below:
Looking at the 'Disk Management' page I can see a partition called 'RECOVERY' so i'm assuming that I can do a factory restore? One thing that is concerning me though is that Dell have provided a Windows 7 DVD and Drivers and Utilities DVD so i'm worried that i'm expected to reformat the hard drive and install from scratch?

I have a Dell 580 MT, Windows 7 Home x64. I want to restore factory image, but can't because original MBR was overwritten a while back. The factory. wim file is in the Dell/Image folder of Recovery partition, but there's no tools folder, so I can't use the "imagex /apply d:dellimagefactory.wim 1 c:" I also created a WAIK v. 2.0 disk with the KB3AIK_EN.iso image on it.

I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 1011. It has installed on it Windows 7 Starter 32 bit. I'm trying to do a complete system reset on it to wipe everything and bring it back to factory settings. The computer doesn't have a cd/dvd drive. I don't have an external cd/dvd drive. The computer doesn't have a restore partition. From what I gather I need to download or create the iso for Windows 7 Starter.I can't find this iso. I can find the iso for home premium and professional, but not for starter.

Dell inspiron 580 running Win 7, I cannot access DFIR using normal keystrokes. When I hit "repair Computer" it loops me back to same screen. Is there any other way of retrieving this program? The handbook says it is on a hidden partition on the hard drive.

She asked me to restore her computer to factory settings. She is not at all tech savvy, so I know for a fact she did not do anything to mess it up. It was running fine, but she just wanted to clean it out and bring it back to like new. She pretty much only uses her computer for school papers and email. I have done factory recovery on many computers at this point and I have never had any problems at all until now.
First thing I did was hook up my external hard drive and saved all of her documents and pictures. I then restarted the computer and pressed F8 and then clicked on repair my computer. It took me to datasafe backup and restore. I went as far as to restore the factory image. I chose not to save any files and to restore it to new again. It completed as normal and I clicked restart. When it restarts, a list of files pops up and then it says "Setup is preparing your computer for first use." It also shows another list of files that seem to be loading as well as it tells me that it is booting in safemode. Next thing it says is that "Setup will continue after restarting your computer". It then continues to restart and perform this boot loop until I turn it off.
I tried to repair the computer and it would fail saying it was offline. So, I plugged the hard drive into an adapter to hook it to my other computer. I opened the disk manager. I saw that the recovery partition was not active like it is on my other hard drives. I also see that for some reason it has a tiny partition that is labeled fat. On my other hard drives it is labeled oem partition. Not sure if this makes a difference or not, but thought it was worth mentioning. Also, when I choose to explore the recovery partition, it says the recovery folder is empty, however the properties say it is nearly full with many files. On my other hard drives I can not access that folder at all. I also am not sure if this matters or not, but didn't want to let anything I am doing go unnoticed.

I have a Dell system studio slim desktop, I used the "reinstallation DVD, windows 7 home premium 64-bit" disk to reinstall. After the reinstallation, when it automatically reboots, the screen starts up where I can press F2 or F12 for boot options but after that and windows logo, it stays on a black screen.
For a little background history, the desktop had a power supply die and I bought and added a new PSU. After that it worked until viruses on my computer forced me to reinstall windows.

powered up computer. All looked good until the boot stopped showing only wallpaper. This is my sons computer and I understand there is no backup or restore disk. I was able to make a boot cd for diagnostics, and have been doing lots of research all the way to the cmd prompt. x: If I look at the setup when booting it shows no hard drive but if I select f12 for bootselection it shows hard drive. I suspect a virus effecting the boot sector.

dell inspiron 570 desktop 2gb ram win 7 avast malwarebytes. best buy demo model bought last october. started having problems a few months ago when downloading Internet videos. it would shut off with no warning. event log showed kernel 41 power issue but no other info. it seemed to happen after every windows update. system restore or booting to last known good configuration helped for a while. now the computer will only stay on for 5 min before it dies. sys restore stopped working. it's unable to extract a copy of the directory so i'm thinking it may be a win 7 reinstall situation. unfortunately i don't remember my admin password so i couldn't access the repair options.

Its a laptop. Bluescreen shows up for split second so I can't see the error code. I tried pressing Ctrl + F11 during boot but didn't work. Any another thing I can try before I throw it out? Don't say 'contact Dell'.

My notebook (HP Envy 14) had been attacked by malware, and after eventually destroying the virus, I've realized that the system files/programs were severely damaged. For instance, when I attempt to open Internet Explorer or Firefox, a window appears, asking me to browse for a program to open the "unrecognized" Internet Explorer with... and this process applies to most of my programs, such as Microsoft Word (in order to open Word, I must indirectly open a word file document, it's impossible to simply click on Word from the start menu). So, that's why I decided to return my notebook to its original state, using the System Restore factory option. However, when I attempt to run system restore (after saving all of my important files onto an external hard disk), an error message comes up: "Error: Recovery Manager cannot run from the hard drive. Recovery Manager must be run using recovery media to perform a Factory Reset." What exactly is "recovery media" and why is this message appearing?

I recently had a virus/malware attack on my system, removed it, but the system is damaged (Security center & updates cant be started etc) . I want to restore the comp using the acer feature "restore to factory settings". But I wonder, must I have a Win7-installation CD after the restore?? Because the computer came with preinstalled Windows 7 when I bought it. Keep in mind that it's a factory settings restore not a complete format c (i think) I've done a backup on hardrive "D" of my current system in case of anything going wrong. If a Cd is required, could you tell me another way to format the comp without buying the CD? My security center is damaged, so restore to point doesnt work either. If you got any solutions to how to start security center except setting it to "automatic" in services.msc (Since this doesnt work), please post 'em.

For a variety of reasons, I want to do a clean install on my laptop, which is a Dell Studio XPS with Windows 7. I don't have any Windows disks (it's 2 years old and I'm fairly sure I wasn't provided any), so I'm trying to do it through advanced boot options. When I hit F8 during startup and select repair, I am shown the screen "Windows is loading files..." and then the system starts as usual, rather than giving me options for a fresh install, which the description (and every set of instructions I've seen) would suggest.

My computer has been slowly deteriorating the last few days. It first ran a system repair every time I started the computer and would then boot to the desktop, then it would just loop through the system repair screen over and over. I am thinking that my last option is to restore the computer to it's factory default since I have everything backed up on an external hard drive.

It was working great and I noticed that it would not recognize an external drive I was going to install some progs from, even though I can go in to Admin Tools and see it there, and then I tried taking it online and it says Windows Explorer not responding all the time, so I think the best bet at this point is to restore it back to out of the box condition.I just started tweaking on it, so it's not like I'll be losing much work.
