Hotkey For Closing Taskbar Items

Does anyone know if there is a hotkey to close an item on the taskbar?

I know you can open them with Windows key+ 1,2,3,etc

But for example if I am watching a video in firefox (current window) and want to exit my music player(songbird, minimized in the background) So i can hear the video, is there a hotkey where i can simply press some key combination and select its number on the taskbar?

Stop Taskbar Items From Flashing
Is there any way to stop taskbar items from flashing yellow and begging for attention until I click on them? This is particularly with Live Messenger. I usually have Messenger and my browser side by side so I can see the conversation without switching Windows.

It is VERY distracting to have the icon constantly flashing everytime someone says something. The only way to stop it is to click on the messenger Window and click back! Who at MS thought this was a good idea??? There should at least be an option.

Pinned Taskbar Items Disappearing When Program Opens
When I open a program that has been pinned to the taskbar, the icon for that program disappears immediately. I understand that this is a feature of Windows 7, but my girlfriend finds it rather annoying. Is there any way to stop this behavior? By the way, I am using the "Never Combine" option for my taskbar.

For example, the first icon pinned in the taskbar is Mozilla Firefox. When I open Firefox, the icon disappears, and only the other pinned icons remain. I would like to change this behavior so that the icon, once pinned, will remain, even if I open the program associated with it.

Taskbar Pinned Items Don't Show When External Screen Disconnected
Couple of things I would like some thoughts on:

- The items I have pinned to my task bar do not appear when I boot my laptop without an external display connected. The task bar is there, it just has the start button and the notification area. No pinned items. when I boot my laptop with an external display (I've got it set to extended mode) the pinned icons appear fine. This has been happening on this laptop through three builds (now RTM) and three clean installations of Windows 7. Until RTM, I also had the same problem with pinned start menu items not appearing when disconnected from the external display. If I moved the start bar around the other edges of the screen, they could suddenly appear. Start menu now appears okay with the RTM. I have updated my graphics drivers with no change.

- My desktop background, which we have deployed via Group Policy located on a network shared folder, does not appear when I log on. If I open the personalization screen I can see the expected background in the 'unsaved theme'. If I flick to something else and back again, the desktop background does appear.

Hotkey To Multiple Displays
I've been browsing the web to find an answer for my question, but with no luck.

I use Windows 7 on a PC which is setup to be both an office and an entertainment computer. Therefore it's connected to two seperate screens with one graphic card. The screens are one 19" desktop screen (1280x1024) and one 40" Samsung LCD TV (1920x1080). When I'm browsing the web, working with documents etc. I use the desktop screen and when I watch movies, pictures etc. I use the TV.

Now I'm trying to switch between them in an easy way. I've tried several third party applications but eventually found that the best way to switch between these in fact is to use Windows 7 built-in software. I've setup Windows to recognize the two seperate screens and I switch between them by using the "Multiple Displays" option in the settings. I then switch by using "show desktop only on 1/2".

Do anyone know if this switch can be done by using a hotkey combination through Windows or through some other software? It's not the end of the world right clicking the desktop and doing it, but it'd be nice to save a few clicks every time.

Screen Saver Start - Hotkey Or Mouse
Is there a way to start a screen saver with a hot-key or a mouse gesture (or perhaps by putting the mouse into a certain corner for a certain amount of seconds)?

I would like the ability to start the screen saver on command without going to the display option and clicking the preview button. For example, when surfing the web or watching a video, I would like to push alt-s or something similar, or perhaps move the mouse to a corner, and the screen saver starts automatically, right away, then acts normally as if it started by itself (meaning, it is "on" until I move the mouse or push a key).

Quick Launch, Option Toolbar, Hotkey
Window 7, Quick Launch, Task Bar Toolbar Option

Is it true the registry hack is the only way to view Quick Launch?

Desktop Shortcut keys / hotkeys were great with the window button on the quick launch for Vista. Example Win button + 2 would launch the second shortcut icon.

Closing Programs On The Superbar
With vista and previous OS's it was easy to just right-click a program on the taskbar and hit the letter "c" to close it. you could very rapidly close a series of windows from the taskbar.

now in Windows 7 x64 when i right click a program in the taskbar and hit 'c' it simply highlights the "close window" option... requiring me to either have to hit enter or click on the selected option "close window"

is it possible to have things work like they used to ?? such that a right-click and then the letter 'c' would close the window without any additional input ?

Win7 Not Closing Programs
Has anyone else noticed this,

I am using a browser, and for example looking at the forum here. When I close the browser without logging out from the forum and then restart the browser I am still logged in.

This never happens with Vista, I always have to login again

Does seven not close the programs properly to speed up the re-opening??

Does this not infringe on some aspect off security? Not for me I am the only user

Could this be a bug?

This works for both IE and Firefox.

Closing Ports On Win7
I made a port scan and had to see that Windows7 has many open ports i dont want. I look up for these services but dont find them. How can i close these ports. I dont want any things about a Firewall config, cause i dont trust firewalls much. They are good, but closed ports are better. So I just wanna these ports defenitly closed. I dont use any of these tools or software. My question is why are they open. I think thats a security breach.

Closing Window/program Laggy
I just installed build 7100 yesterday and i have really enjoyed it so far, but noticed one slight annoyance.

When I close a program or a window, the animation takes effect and the window begins to close, then pauses for literally a nano-second, before closing all the way. Its not much, but its noticeable enough to be an annoyance.

I've only been able to find one other post of someone complaining of the same issue, and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if anyone has a fix.

Black Screen After Closing Certain Programs
The only problem I have is that when I open or close certain programs I get an unavoidable 'black screen'. IE: When I get done watching some Death Note in Windows Media Center (full screen) and I decide to close it, occasionally it will close and just go blank. My monitor doesn't detect that it's been turned off, or that there's a problem.

So I'll do what a lot of people do, and ALT-CTRL-DEL once or twice to try and bring up that screen. No luck. The only time I can retrieve everything and save my data before shutting off my computer is if I have an unfinished word document and when I press my power button the screen comes back on and viola! I see windows again! It then asks me if I want to save my work, click cancel, I can resume my Windows 7 enjoyment.

Well, because I press the power button and Windows wants to shut down, it closes out of some services and other programs, so I'm limited (barely, but limited) to what I can do.

It is not only WMC that causes this. I play Combat Arms in full screen, and occasionally when the program opens (into it's full-screenness) it will black screen (and I can still hear the music, so the computer isn't crashing) or when I exit the game. For a bit I thought it was just when I play stuff in full-screen and my video card gives out.

So I open Game Maker, and I attempt to make a game every now and then. I save my work, throw my project into a test play, and everything works out. It begins in windowed, and so I don't screw anything up, I leave it that way. Well, I came here because that was the last thing I did. Close out of a windowed game that probably took barely, if any, video ram (I know it takes some, but old computers' on-board VGA adapters would have no problem running the program I made.) and I get 'black screen' after closing that.

Out of being piss off'd (yes. piss off'd.) I go to the ATI website and download the latest 7/Vista drivers for my Radeon X800 video card. Got the drivers, nothing special happened. Still get an occasional black screen. Got one of the forms of the Catalyst driver thing (I don't know what they are, so I just install them) and still nothing. I know that there is a sticky in this forum for the drivers, and I already have the drivers linked here.

So I tried the 32 bit link (getting catalyst stuff,) and I'm presented with the first download link being for 64-bit computers only. Why is it in the 32-bit page? I even look at the URL, and somewhere up there is says .../vista-32/sumin'... or something along those lines. So what the heck? Downloaded it. Now in its installation 7 keeps telling me "This program has stopped working," "This program has stopped working" all throughout the installation process.

Screen Blacks Out When Closing Lid
On my Vaio laptop, whenever I close the lid, the screen goes black and will not come back on when I lift the lid unless I put it in sleep mode.  This is 64x version.  I have changed all the power setting I can find to "do nothing" when the lid is closed.  I have tried a number of video drivers, rolling back to a number of Vista drivers that work fine but do not solve the problem.

I've looked in the registry to no avail.  I'm thinking it might have something to do with the ACPI drivers but I'm not sure.  It may just be a bug that will have to be fixed in later versions.  Anyone having the same problems or come up with a solution.  Computer is a Sony Vaio 17" laptop with an nvidia video card and Core 2 Duo processor.  Everything else has been smooth with Windows 7.

Slow Closing Certain Programs / Games
I upgraded Vista x64 Ultimate to Win 7 x64 Ultimate. The upgrade went fine - no major issues with the upgrade process. I am, though, having some small issues when running 7:

1. Outlook 2007 process remains open after closing Outlook.

2. Very slow closing certain programs/games.

3. Gadgets doesn't work.

4. Occasional empty folder pops up on taskbar that I can't close.

5. WEI for my SATA3 HD is 2.9 - 500GB Seagate

6. System shutdowns take forever

The system, overall, seems to be quite responsive but the problems I'm running into are somewhat frustrating.

Not sure if these have been addressed in other threads yet, as I'm still searching them. I'm guessing that part of it may be due to MB driver issues, but not sure - running an EVGA 780i MB.

Process Exists After Closing Outlook 2007
I have Win7pro x64 RTM running on a OCZ Vertex SSD

When Outlook is closed, it usually leaves a process running in the background (OUTLOOK.EXE).

When I go to shutdown the PC, I'm alerted that outlook is still running.

I either shut down the process or tell windows to shutdown anyway.

Is this a compatability bug?

Microsoft Word 2007 SP1 Crashes And Freezes On Saving And Closing
 I am running Windows 7 beta X64 build 7000 on my T61

Problem: after installing MS Office 2007 Standard, everything works fine. After installing the required security updates, SP1, and fixes, only Word 2007 crashes (not PP, Excel, or Outlook). The crash happens just about every time I save a doc or exit Word.

I had a problem with word crashing with XP, Vista, and Vista X64. The fix was simple; since I have an HP C6280 printer all I had to do was make sure it wasn't set as the default printer. (therefore it was an HP driver issue).

This time with Win 7 that is not the case. I have even tried uninstalling all of my HP drivers and products. The only solution which has worked for me is to disable all add-ons in Word. Has anyone else experienced this problem or know of a fix?

I suspect it has something to do with the XML add-on; or maybe one of the updates.

Taskbar Meters Monitor Your Win7 Hardware In The Taskbar
Windows 7 only: If you're not into Windows desktop gadgets, there is another way to easily monitor your computer's CPU and RAM: Taskbar Meters puts simple, attractive resource monitors right on your Windows 7 Taskbar.

Taskbar Meters contains two programs that you can pin to your taskbar—one that monitors CPU, one that monitors RAM. Each has a colored bar that shows how much of that resource you are using, complete with color coding. In the program's preferences, you can decide how often to update the meter and what percentage of usage constitutes "yellow" and "red" colors on the taskbar. Each icon also has a jumplist that lets you easily open up Task Manager or Resource Monitor to get a more detailed report.

Bug: Taskbar Background Left Over When Moving Taskbar
I have just installed Windows 7 RC 64-bit and have observed some buggy behaviour when moving the taskbar from the left side of the screen to the top side of the screen and vise-versa.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Dock taskbar to left side of screen
2) Drag taskbar to top side of screen
3) Note background for taskbar remains on left side of screen, and appears on top of every other window including the Start menu
4) Move taskbar to right or bottom sides of the screen to make the remains of the taskbar background disappear

The same issue can also be reproduced by moving the taskbar from the top side of the screen to the left side.
