Freezing During Regular Use, Difficulty Downloading?
Mar 19, 2012
A few days ago my computer started to freeze up during routine tasks, various things will start to stick until nothing works and sometime it just freezes on the spot. At that point I need to manually shut down the computer.Safe mode seems unaffected.I have tried closing all non essential processes but it has had no affect.Have virus scanned with Avast, Malwarebytes and Windows Defender.Windows updates dont download, the tray icon says they are downloaded to a random percentage that doesnt increase (changes each start up). Also had problems downloading the latest version of flash player that did not happen in safe mode.Downloads in firefox are taking several attempts again not affected in safe mode.
Problem did advance to the point where on startup there was only a black screen and mouse pointer and nothing else would work, reverted to my furthest back restore point which got rid of that specific problem but simply returned me to my current problem.

All this was done on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I've been trying to get the "Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE or use the Windows Security button to <log on/unlock this computer.>" text changed. I made a copy of the authui.dll.mui files from both System32/en-US/ and SysWOW64/en-US/ to another location. I opened them up in Resource Hacker , went to String Table/753/1033 and changed the text for items 12035 and 12036 , hit Compile Script , and then save. I then made backups of the originals, took file ownership so that I could delete them, and, finally, replaced them. To verify that this operation was successful, I opened the files, now in their respective en-US folders, back up in Resource Hacker . Each text field displays precisely what I set it to. However, when I lock the computer or log off, the text has not been changed at all. Even after a reboot, the text has not been changed. Afterwards, I went back into the en-US folders to make sure they didn't revert and found my changes in place.

I am having difficulties accessing the network share to my Windows 2000 printer [printer attatched via USB to Win2000 computer, shared among all computers]. Both computers are behind a router, and are on the same workgroup.
My Vista machine did not have any problems accessing this printer or authenticating to Windows 2000, but Windows 7 seems to. The problem is when I go to connect to the PC, I am prompted for a username and password, but upon entering a valid one, it does not connect and comes back as invalid.
I attempted to navigate to the share manually through the "add pritner" device, but this did not work either. [Giving //computername/printer]
Using Windows7 RC1, build 7100 and Windows 2000 SP4. No difficulty sharing or authenticating on the LAN with any other OS.

I recently built my first PC three days ago...
Specs:
i7 bloomfield 960 processor
4x4 vengeance ram
crosair hx850 PSU
evga x58 ftw3 mobo
hd 6870 radeon graphics xfx
When I first installed windows it started to work just fine but I soon noticed that it would randomly freeze every 15-30 minutes of use, but not on a particular program or anything. I assumed it was drivers so I installed the latest drivers for my GPU and MOBO and keyboard. It seemed fine again until it started crashing again. I ran a GPU burn test and a CPU burn test it passed both. (I tried runing memtest86+ but it froze at like 12%) Then I tried fixing the registry so I downloaded ccleaner and fixed the registry problems. Freezes continued. I finally decided to re install windows so I did and the problems still continued. I am at a loss of what to do and can't think of anything else.

I built a new system about four days ago using all new parts except for an optical drive and hard drive, which I brought over from my previous machine.I've had about 10 BSODs since then - they seem to happen a few times a day. It doesn't seem to be triggered by any one thing e.g opening a certain application.

Hey Tom's! I hope everyone is well. I'm returning to the community with a problem I was having before. I have just upgraded from Windows 7 RC to Win 7 32 bit Enterprise Edition with no problems. Did a fresh install and had it formatted.
Just got my first BSOD/crash, and I had been having regular crashes (about once every 4-5 days) I don't think it's hardware related, probably driver, so I was hoping people could help narrow it down and kill this problem for good.
Here's the text of the BSOD:
Problem signature:

Computer is currently suffering from persistent freezing and bluescreens. It seems to happen almost randomly, and usually very soon after startup and loading of Windows. System restore has not helped.'fraid that's all the info I can give right now. Any recommendations? If anyone wants me to run hijackthis or dxdiag and post results I'd be more than happy to (assuming I can get that far before it freezes!). Safe mode does work, and the problem does not occur while in safe mode.

My laptop, running Windows 7, has been experiencing problems with staying connected to the internet. Sometimes within 10 minutes the internet is lost twice. It automatically reconnects after a couple minutes and it's smooth sailing from thereon out. Then it could be a couple of hours later before it disconnects again.here doesn't seem to be a clear pattern as to when it shuts off connection.I've updated the drivers, tried to remove as much as I could from the start up programmes as well as the services, though I am not sure how to check if there are software conflicts. I've used CCleaner to clean up as much as I can, including the registry. I have tried Belarc for the first time to try and look into problems, but am not well versed in it. The programmes that I know of that remain connected to the internet while my laptop is on include AVG, Firefox/Chrome, Skype, Windows Firewall. I am not sure what other kind of info I can provide, but could post running programmes or anything else you would suggest.

I've been getting BSODs almost daily for a while. They seemed to stop for a while, but now seem more common again. No pattern I can see (can be while browsing, or working)Often I get pfn_list_corrupt or memory_management I've tried running Mem86 but all looks good. Tried chkdsk and all looks good.I've tried updating video card driver but that didn't seem to help.Temps are good so I know it's not an overheating issue.I'm attaching dumps and perfmon.

I have an older PC with Windows 7 and XP dual boot on a 640GB HD. Recently built a new quad core PC and installed Windows 7 on a 60GB SSD. There is also a new 640GB HD for applications and data.
Spent quite a bit of time searching for the best method of transferring the applications and data setting from the old PC with single HD to the new PC's with SSD and HD. PCMove and True Image are mentioned as options but not sure how they can handle 2 destination drives. I dread the thought of adding each application one by one.

I have 3 drives. 1 SSD and 2 normal hard drives.
Does it even make a difference? I have an Esata bracket that I want to run in AHCI mode but how about the normal system and data drives? What is the best way to set up drives?

I'm trying to remote access my laptop on the same network (and potentially from a different network) but I can only do so when I use its 192.168.X.XX IP. When I try its up from What Is My IP Address - Shows Your IP Address I get the "Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons
1) Remote Access to the computer is not enabled
2) The Remote Computer is Turned Off
3) The Remote Computer is not available on the network" I've also forwarded port 3389 on my Linkysys WRT54GSV4 router. Solved the issue. I'm just worried now because the laptop will move to a different network with my little cousins who won't know how to change the router's port settings for their router.

I had users passing around a computer that ended up with a bunch of settings being screwed up which made me want to deny all regular domain users but not administrators. I did this as a local group policy on the computer under gpedit where i denied users and to my horrifying experience no users can log in, not even local admin.

I didn't turn my laptop off, which is normal when I'm downloading stuff, I didnt do any updating lately. When I woke up this morning, my computer can't access the internet. I can't log onto Skype, can't access web using IE, Firefox( my regular one used the most), a chines one I sometime use for chinese websites. I have another 2 computers in the house and they both are fine, can access all programs as usual. After using restore point, I reset all firewall( remove all firewall), removed all blocking programs, redownloaded IE and Firefox on another computer and re-install on the one with problem, nothing.I thought it was network issue. even though it shows 65% connectivity, I tried to reset the router, the whole works, nothing. other 2 computers still fine. I put in my d-link use wireless thing, have connection, websites still cannot be accessed.
I finally tried IE 64 bit, which worked. So I thought, ok, maybe a clitch. i tried other programs again, nothing. For some strange reason, only ie 64 can access the net on this computer now, which I HATE.There is no firewalls on router or otherwise. ISP is not limiting, as other computers are fine.

Been regularly getting BSOD with STOP message of ntfs for a few weeks now. I have attached the zip file and also a screenshot. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 retail upgrade. Installed about a year ago. The original operating system was Vista ultimate. I have upgraded the motherboard driver today and haven't had the BSOD since (touch wood) but not 100% that it was that.

I experience random reboots since a day or two, they happen every hour between 60 and 70 minutes of the last reboot. I already checked the event log and it only says a critical error but no reason identified. I haven't changed anything in the hardware the last couple of months.

I work in a domain environment administering a large number of workstations running Windows 7 enterprise. I want to restrict regular users from shutting down their PCs so that I can perform remote administrative tasks without walking out on the floor and ensuring all 300 + machines are actually turned on. I do not have rights to the domain controller so I cannot assign by group policy. I can use psexec or ntrights to remove shutdown options from explorer but users can still initiate the shutdown command via cmd and pressing the power button on the tower still invokes a shutdown. Note: I am not talking about a cold shutdown i.e holding the power button (I can't actually do anything about that). So is there a way (perhaps in the registry) to disable the shutdown command for all users except the local administrator? I'll need to do this to over 300 PCs so if it can be done via script of command line that would be best

I bought an Acer Aspire One netbook with Windows 7 Starter on it, and I have a Windows 7 Ultimate installation DVD that I want to use to upgrade my netbook's OS. I put the DVD into an external DVD drive connected to my netbook with a USB cable and started the installation wizard.
I chose the "Upgrade" option and the installer said that I need to use Windows Anytime Upgrade for that. The problem with that is that I don't want to buy a new license, since I already have this DVD. How can I upgrade my netbook's OS from Windows 7 Starter to Ultimate with the DVD I already have?

i'm having an issue where my internet connection will seemingly drop for a split second, and then reconnect.for example, i will be signed into irc and will have a momentary drop in connection which boots me out, and then i will instantly reconnect.another example would be when watching a streamed video (Internet). i will be watching a video and then the buffering would stop, until i manually navigated to a couple of seconds later, and then buffering would continue.a final example would be in skype, where people are constantly getting connect/disconnect notifications from me.i've had a go at pinging google (-t) to see if it sheds any light on the frequency of disconnection. it has an average ping of about 35 ms, and will occasionally spike to roughly 130-150 every 7 lines or so. but other than that it has no difficulty pinging at all.
