Formatting HDD And Reinstalling Windows 7 64bit?

Feb 21, 2011

I have had windows 7 installed for over 12 months now but lately I am finding my pc to be a bit slow. I have just purchased some more RAM for it and I am going to get a 2tb internal HDD as well in the next few days. Then I am going to format the HDD and reinstall windows 7.Now I already have a 600gb HDD which is partitioned into 3 drives (1 of these has win 7 installed). Is it possible when I put the windows 7 installation disc in and reformat the HDD to unpartition 2 of these drives and leave the other one untouched?

Formatting Drive And Reinstalling Windows 7 - Dual Boot (Ubuntu / OpenSuse)

Jul 27, 2012

I have a Toshiba laptop that came with a preinstalled copy of Windows-7 (64 bit) version purchased in July 2010. No setup disk came with the laptop, but there is a "Toshiba recovery media creator" utility. Now, I want to format my laptop, and here I have few queries regarding this:

[1] What is the better option for formatting my drive? Should I use the Toshiba media-creator or install a clean version of Windows-7 from an ISO download (am I allowed to do that? If so, what is a good site to download?) There is a "sticker-certificate" on the bottom of my laptop with a product-key. Will it work with the new install?

[2] Do I have the option of installing a 32-bit version of Windows-7 instead of 64-bit with the above license? The reason is that most applications I use are 32-bit and hence a 32-bit OS is better suited for me. But does the license allow me to do that?

[3] (The tricky part) - Since I have a good 320GB HDD, I want to dual-boot by creating two partitions - with a linux distribution (Ubuntu/openSuse) running on the second partition? Assuming I don't have the option of clean-install, will I be able to create the extra partition for linux using the Toshiba utility?

Formatting Without Getting Any Windows.old?

Nov 27, 2009

My friend wiped my friend's computer on a Vista installer by choosing "load drivers" or something in the partition screen and then pressing format. I can't find this anywhere, or what I mean is there are no drivers to load. When I try to format, I can only format so that my computer saves a Windows.old file. Does that get rid of viruses? Does it get rid of a slow computer?

How To Install Windows 7 Without Formatting The Partition

Nov 15, 2012

I have a Sony Vaio with two partitions, a main one that 412 GB and another one that is 39GB. The operating system is on the main partition (412GB) but I have been having a lot of problems with it so I want to install a new Windows 7 Home Premium version.

The problem is that I do not have an external hard disk drive and cannot afford one right now. I have the Windows 7 DVD that came with the computer (Home Premium 64-bit) and I also created a USB drive off of it, and will probably be using the USB since it's much faster and smoother.

Anyway, my question is how do i install Windows 7 to the main partition (400GB one) without having to format it? I am aware that I can probably install a new version of Windows in the same partition and then the old Windows will be moved to a folder called Windows (old) but in the past I have struggled with deleting that folder and it created more problems than anything

Formatting A Partition That Held Windows 7

I re-installed Windows 7 on a fresh partition this morning after I started experiencing some glitches. Got the new partition up and running with a fresh version of Win 7, but now I'm unable to delete / format the previous partition it was on. When I select format drive, after warning me all files will be lost, it says Windows is unable to complete the format. If I try and manually delete all the files, it tells me I need permission from "Trusted Installer" to make changes to certain folders.

What To Do AFTER Reinstalling Windows 7

Nov 25, 2011

I bought a brand new Samsung QX411 two months ago. It's a great computer. Problem is, it got hit with a nasty virus that was pretty much completely debilitating, so I took it in to Best Buy (mistake), and they told me the best thing would be just reinstall Windows 7, and everything would be great. Well, I did, and now I am stuck. I reinstalled, but I did not realize that literally nothing would be in place. I am not completely naive: I did save all of my important files, folders, music, etc. So it's not that I have lost my data and am now crying "woe is me." Instead, I have basically a blank Windows 7 and nothing is there. I can't connect to the internet, because it is telling me that I don't have the necessary hardware (I know I do, but still). A basic summary would be this: I have no idea what to do after properly installing Windows 7. I want to get it as close back to normal as I can, but I don't know how to start.

Reinstalling Windows Onto New PC

Jul 13, 2012

I recently built a new computer system that contains my old HDD, which I transferred from my previous PC. The old copy of Windows 7 that was already installed didn't work in the new PC, as expected. Instead, I have a new copy of Windows 7 available that I need to get on the HDD. But I also need to deal with the old Windows copy. I've already transferred all of my personal files from the old copy onto a portable HDD for safe keeping. What I plan on doing is reinstalling the new copy of Windows 7 onto the PC's HDD to be used in the new computer. I was able to acquire the new Windows 7 version for a really cheap price from my college.

So now I either have to format my HDD so that the new Windows 7 can work properly while keeping the old/useless version out of the way, or wipe the old Windows 7 from the HDD completely. Should I keep the old Windows 7 on the HDD and just never use it, or would that conflict too much with the partition used by the new version? If they do conflict, how should I go about removing the old Windows 7 partition? dealing with the HDD and OS seems to be one of the most annoying parts of a PC.
