Firefox Freezes After Being Left Idle?
Jul 31, 2011
I am using FF 5 currently and every time I leave the browser for a few minutes and then 'wake' it from being idle, I get a delay until it starts to respond to anything. It seems that this problem started when I first upgraded from FF 3 to 4 and has been going on since then. have tried to disable some add-ons to test if this would make a difference, have created a new profile, cleared cache, history etc. but nothing seems to keep the browser from going into this 'hibernation mode'.I really do like FF per se, but this issue is driving me nuts

This is a weird problem that showed up in my laptop over the past few months, but I'm just now heading here to try to get some insight on the problem. So when I first got this computer about two and a half years ago, it could edit/render/encode HD videos with little sweat. Now, it can sorta still do that. The only quaint problem is that it tends to crash if I go AFK for about 10 minutes or so while it is doing so. I can sit while rendering a video and browse the internet with no problem--I don't even really feel the laptop getting very warm, let alone crashing. However if I am to leave it alone while I go to do something else, I always come back to it turned off. When I reboot, I get the typical "Windows did not shut down correctly" spiel.

For some reason my screen goes into the "enter admin password" mode when left idle. How can I make that stop? I get the reason for it, say if you worked in an office and don't want anyone to use your computer when your away, but this is a home computer.

if i leave my comp idle for a few hours i find that none of my programs start, and sometimes i cannot even open olders on my desktop, double clicking any shortcut or even the .exe in the root program folder results in nothing happening. the start menu still opens but i cant select restart or log off as they do not appear, i can still shutdown but it takes about 30 seconds before acually responding and shutting down. Also should mention that if i open any program eg: photoshop or nero and leave the computer idle, when i return and try to continue using the program it will stop responding most of the time, any either ctrl-alt-delete or shutdown is required to quit.my power management setting are all off, hybrid sleep is off....my comp is set to never sleep in any way.i am running windows 7 pro x64, i3 processor, 4gb ram?

I have the HP DV 2610US and recently upgraded to Windows 7. I have noticed that if i leave my computer with my lid closed for like 30-40 minutes it would shut down & restart and show an error message with Blue Screen as the error. It has also happened with the lid open while the computer wasn't being used.

I am having an annoying problem on my notebook. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium x64. My specs are;
Sony Vaio E series notebook
M460 CPU
8 Gb Ram
120 Gb Sandisk SSD
ATI HD 5650
An external 5.1 Creative sound card (USB)
And a 2TB 3.5" hard drive constantly hooked up.
My problem is, I leave the computer on its own for some time, while browser, music/video player, e-mail client vs. normal applications are running, because I need to go outside or due to any reason. When I get back after some time, I press a button to active the screen (I do not use any sleep or hibernation mode, or HDD switch off timeout. My PC constantly works), I get the screen but after a few seconds my pc freezes. The mouse also. It responds to nothing for an unspecified amount of time. I press buttons, move the cursor, try to click things but the screen just freezes. After some time (which varies in every freeze like this) my notebook starts to respond and act normal.
Interesting thing is, during a freeze I press the Windows button, and when the freeze is over, the notebook jumps up the start menu. It's like it freezes but also records the given commands during freeze. I tried setting an animated screensaver, but no difference. I return to the notebook, I press a key and it freezes again. The freezes go on or varied times, from 30 seconds to several minutes. Another interesting thing is when I leave a torrent program on, I don't encounter such freeze. It also happened right after a clean Windows restore.

hen the system is not heavily loaded it seems to freeze after 10 minutes to an hour, primarily observed with the Up Time clock in Task Manager stopping. Other symptoms include no response to keyboard or mouse clicks and having the cursor lock to a particular shape such as the window size adjustment shape. The only way I have found to get the system going again is to shutdown and reboot. Usually a hardware reset or forcing shutdown is required to get applications such as Task Manager to stop. When the system is heavily loaded i.e. running Prime95, these symptoms do not seem to occur.I have been unable to determine conclusively whether the problem is hardware or software. The system(s) are new with the following configuration[CODE]I have performed multiple clean installations of Windows 7 Pro from two different Microsoft DVDs (purchased from Newegg), used two different sets of hardware (including CPUs, memory, video cards, Power supplies, disks, etc.) changed from Gigabyte GA-X58-USB3 motherboards to GA-X58A-UD5 motherboards, run memory tests for ten hours or more, run in Safe mode, run with absolutely no additional software other that the virgin operating system. Tested multiple BIOS settings, including optimized defaults, with changes only to allow RAID disks.

This suddenly began occurring about a week ago. The system runs fine, however if it is left for a fairly short period of time (15-20 mins) The program am I using will freeze and the cursor will change to loading. The task bar will then freeze if I try and click 'start', and I have to hold down my Power button to turn the PC off. I have tried system restore, Defragmentation, and virus checks. Running out of ideas! I'm using x64 Windows 7, and my specs are as follows.

About 2 months ago I started getting random freezes and would have to do a hard restart on my computer to restart. To see if it was a virus or any kind of malware, I did a clean reformat of my hard drive and was still having issues. Eventually it started taking forever to boot up and load files and I got a SMART status bad message. So I wound up replacing my hard drive with a brand new one and did a clean install of Windows 7. That seemed to fix the slow boot and file load times but now I'm still getting freezes. However they are not random. They seem to happen when I don't touch the computer for awhile, whether I have a program such as something downloading in the background or not. They also seem to happen when I close the computer and put it to sleep and leave it like that for awhile. I try to wake it up and I only get a black screen, however my computer is on as I can hear the components.
The strange thing is as long as I am actively using the computer it doesn't seem to do this. I was on it for about 6 hours yesterday night and nothing happened and the computer was working fine. I did various hard disk scans even though I know it can't be the hard drive seeing as I just replaced it. It also isn't my graphics card as I uninstalled the driver and let my computer run for awhile with the standard VGA adapter and it still froze after me not touching it for awhile. I also did a windows memory diagnostic scan and nothing came up. I'm thinking there are 2 seperate problems with my computer, one that I fixed by replacing the hard drive (the slow boot time and file loading times, it took me 20 minutes to open up windows explorer, it doesn't anymore.) and another that I am unsure of. Should I do more memtest passes? I heard that one is not enough and that you should do up to 7 to make sure your RAM isn't faulty.
Here are my computer specs:
Model: Samsung R780
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
Processor: Intel Core i5 2.27 GHZ
RAM: 4GB DDR3
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GT 330M (1GB Video Memory)
Hard Drive: 500 GB Hybrid SATA/Solid State (4GB of solid state memory), this is the new hard drive that I purchased.
I tried downloading updates for a game and it immediately froze. So maybe the freezing is still happening on a random basis...

Lately I have problems with my pc, sometimes the windows blocks/freeze and I must restart from the button; this happens like 1 time in 3 hours or 1 time in 7 days, it's random. The image freeze even if the pc is in idle. I have found another problem, the mouse cursor freeze for 2 sec (the image doesn't freeze, only the cursor), and after it's coming back to normal. I tried with several mouse's. I tried with another HDD and I have the same problem..
PC config:
cpu: i5 750 2.66
gpu: msi gtx 460 hawk
mobo: asrock p55 pro/usb3.0
ram: Corsair 4GB DDR3 1333MHz CL9 XMS3 Dual Channel Kit
hdd: Samsung 250 GB SATA-II 7200RPM 16MB SpinPoint F1
psu: AntecBasiq Power 550W
I did reinstall the windows, update drivers and bios update, cleared cmos, tested the RAM with memtest86 (no errors).

My computer locks up randomly and the screen turns black and unresponsive, at least once per day, forcing me to do a hard reset. There is no BSOD or Minidump created, although sometimes (maybe 75% of the time) there is a dump file created in the LiveKernelReports folder. The dump files in LiveKernelReports always point to atikmpag.sys. I tried uninstalling all video card drivers and using driver sweeper, and letting Windows use default graphics. I continued to get the same freezes, except no dump files were created at all in LiveKernelReports. I then reinstalled the ATI drivers, and the symptoms persist, now with dump files again pointing to the same atikmpag.sys.this only happens when the system is idle for a while. I never get freezes when actively using the system, but if I return to it after an hour or more, it's just a black screen and I must do a hard reset.I am running Win 7 professional 64-bit full version, 8 gb ram, 1gb ddr5 msi video card.Another strange symptom: After the hard reset, the computer has deleted all of my IE cookies. It also has forgotten the IE window size after these hard resets... very bizarre. In fact, if I make any changes to the desktop -- for example, by moving the icons or re-sorting them by name -- Windows doesn't remember this either. On reboot, it reverts to whatever I had on the desktop before making the changes. This does not happen on a normal restart/reboot. If I do not wait for it to crash, and instead I reboot normally, all of my settings/cookies/window sizes are preserved like you'd expect.
I've tried the following:
- ran memtest86, no errors after 9 passes
- ran seatools hard drive diagnostics, no errors found
- ran Hot CPU Tester 4, no errors found
- reinstalled/reseated graphics gard and memory sticks
- running with a single memory stick (same crashes occur with either memory stick)
- the windows memory and hard drive diagnostic tools, no errors found
- When running Driver Verifier, I get the same freezes, and still no minidump or bsod.
- Disabling all power saving options both in Windows and in the BIOS, like sleep mode, hibernate, etc.
- Updating all drivers that seemed out of date and upgrading bios to latest firmware.
Prime95 and furmark run without issue, and do not crash the system (presumably, because the system isn't idle when they are running). Idle temps (~30 degrees C) and temps under heavy load (about 60 degrees C) are well within the normal range. If I run in safe mode, it does not seem to occur, but I'm not positive because I've never stayed in safe mode for more than a day.

My PC HP Pavillion DV5 notebook.
inter ® core â„¢ i3 CPU M330 @ 2.13 ghz
Installed memory (RAM) 3.00 GB (2.86 usable)
64 bit operating system.
I have reduced start up programs to minimum and offloaded all big files to external hard disk to free of space, but when I use the internet, the pc just seems to slow down until it completely stops.on many occasions it automatically shuts down due to over heating, I have a fan pad (under the laptop) to keep the heat down but still makes no difference, I have also updated the BIOS settings and set the internal fan to work all the time.Is this a virus ? or just a crap laptop ?I have installed bit defender and also regularly run clean up! to remove temp files.

I upgraded my graphics card from GT 240 1GB GDDR5 to HD 7750 1GB GDDR5 in November 2012.But I am noticing a strange issue recently but have no idea whether the card has something to do with it.The problem occurs very rarely though it is annoying. During browsing using Mozilla Firefox, the Firefox freezes, then whole system freezes and returns to normal within seconds with a single beep sound from speakers/headphones. I have tried "turning off hardware acceleration" but still it occurs without that. There are no issues other this.Only freezes and returns to normal within seconds.
The driver version :Catalyst 12.8 {I have tried Catalyst 12.10 and even Beta version 12.11 but the problem exists in all drivers. But catalyst 12.8 seems to be stable with games and uses very low power while playing HD videos in my own benchmark. So I am using 12.8.} Mozilla Firefox version : 18.0 {The same issue was present in previous Firefox versions (17 series) and I haven't tried versions older than that due to security risk} Can anyone tell what the problem might be? Besides graphics card is stable and fur mark test run successfully with 65-70 degree C temp as highest.

I have the following configuration on an assembled computer:
PHENOM II X4 + Gigabyte GA 88 GMA UD 2H
Seagate HDD 500GB Sata
DDR-3 Corsair x2
HD 6850
Cooler Master SMPS 500W
Windows 7 64-bit
My issue is that computer freezes when I browse the internet with Chrome, Firefox and Explorer. I can work with Explorer with one tab as of now - I can't open more than one because it freezes the entire computer in a minute or two after opening additional tabs. I have tried System Restore, Registry cleaner, defrag, anti virus scans Mbam scans etc but nothing works.
A few days ago I had shifted the computer to a warmer room and stupidly put the chassis next to an inverter which emits heat. I used to have freezes earlier but it was a rare occurrence maybe just 1-2 times a week - but yes it used to be there before. Opening many tabs as I wanted in chrome, firefox or explorer was never a problem earlier. I have the problem is only with internet browsing - playing videos, music, work on excel, ppt etc is no problem.

I recently updated to Firefox 18. If I go to Windows' Control Panel and then click on "Uninstall a program", both Firefox 18 and Firefox 15 show up in the list of programs. Should I just leave it as it is, or should I uninstall Firefox 15?
By the way, I updated to Firefox 18 through Firefox's update feature, if that helps.

i have random freezes sometimes they are glitchy and rarely bsod all on bootup or up to about half hour in (which also turns of the mouse). also Internet doesn't autoplay playlists and all sugestions next to the video are black. this started a few weeks to a month ago, first it seemed just a minor annoyance but it started to become more often the last few days. i've tried some checks but without success.
also i remember the week before those crashes that twice the screen driver crashed for a second or 2 and then a message popped up about how a monitor driver crash was adjusted, always when i played a certain game that is still in beta so i taught it was the game.

I just got a brand new HP Elitebook 8650w and installed Windows 7 Professional x64. I've installed all drivers, I've turned Sticky Keys off, I'm using Windows Classic theme, I've tried the on screen keyboard to see if Windows tabbing appears when I press ALT + TAB and it does. But the left ALT key on my keyboard is not reacting. I can use CTRL+ALT GR+DEL to access Task Manager, but not CTRL+ALT+DEL.It just won't work.I've also tried to use an extern USB keyboard, and with that ALT+TAB works fine.

It seems that when I leave my laptop alone to go into sleep mode, the CPU keeps spiking at rather random intervals. Sometimes it spikes to 30% on one core just for a second.I have it set to dim display at 5 minutes, turn monitor off at 15 minutes, and to sleep at 20 minutes. It seems that just before the screen turns off, at about 14 minutes the BFE service and svchost.exe (defragsvc) take up about 50% of my CPU!!I have also seen the ssdp discovery service running and taking up some CPU power aswell? So far I have run a full scan of Microsoft security essentials, Malwarebytes anti malware, and Spybot search and destroy, none have found anything at all. Before the reformat I haven't experienced anything like these spikes. I don't know if that's because I haven't been paying attention to it this much, or if something has infected me, or if something is wrong with my windows 7 installation...
