Disabling More Aero Animations And "X" Button "glow"?
Sep 11, 2010
While there are a (small) handful of features of Aero that i'd like to use, there are many more that slow down the UI and/or make it distracting that I can't find a way to disable.(I even tried the "Basic" theme but it has a bug that discards font size settings made under the now-misnamed "color" dialog). So I end up in Windows Classic, which is being made more difficult to use, including the aforementioned "color" dialog.I've already been to the "Performance" settings and un-checked every animation available, but even after doing so two things remain:
1 The "glow" around control buttons. To me this is hideous and distracting.
2) Some animations still remain, slowing down the user interface.
To be clear, here's what I might like to use in Aero:
1) taskbar window previews
2) the program switching mechanisms (Flip or ALT+TAB)
3) maybe transparency would look okay, without the animations
Bottom line, Microsoft has bundled both good and bad features in this artificial "feature" called Aero, instead of making the features available individually, and made some of the Aero animations impossible to disable (as far as I know).

When I mouse over the taskbar buttons, the glow doesn't go away after I move the mouse away. This doesn't happen all the time, but seems to always pop up eventually on every boot, and persists until I restart. It's done this across several gpu driver updates, so it must be something with Windows 7.

The IT department has decided to install windows 7 on a few of the computers at the campus library. These machines equipped with Windows 7 already feel MUCH faster and more reliable. We now have the benefit of being able to run the aero interface now. So, you can see how much of a positive difference this is.There is one detail that annoys the heck out of me, that I have noticed on all types of computers able to display aero, regardless of the brand or the speed of the computer. This has to do with the fade in / fade out animation that that aero uses. When a window gets created and fades in, the "blur" of the transparent glass effect is not enabled until the last few frames of the animation. This makes it look like the last few frames are skipped, giving the window a "jump" effect, because the glass theme blur is not enabled until the last few frames of the animation, much unlike Vista. The exact same thing happens for the fade out animation, except this "jump" or "jerk" happens during the first frames, because the glass in the titlebar is unblurred, then the rest of the transition happens. This effect makes Windows 7 feel buggy and cheap, and detracts from the GUI experience that I have expected to at least be like Vista's, or better.

I only learnt about this a couple of weeks ago!If you want to make the Aero Peek button at the far right of your Taskbar into a plain and simple Show Desktop button:Simply right-click the Aero Peek button and un-check the "Peek at desktop" option. Et Voila!! That's it!

A buddy of mine insists that disabling Aero (Desktop Window Management / DWM.EXE) will slow your system down (lets assume it has a mid level graphic card). His logic is that Aero offloads some of the work to your GPU. Disabling it will increase CPU usage. My logic is that DWM.EXE uses a "significant" amount of CPU, regardless of what the GPU is doing. DWM.EXE on most systems I've seen is usually at the top of the list when I go to task manager and sort by "CPU TIME". It uses more CPU time then my browser, more then explorer, etc etc.So how can disabling it increase CPU usage? Where is this change reflected (which process shows increase CPU usage if you disable DWM)? How would you prove or disprove this?

When you mouse over a button on the taskbar in Windows 7, the button glows in the predominant color of the program's icon, with the glow being most intense where the cursor currently is.Then the cursor leaves the button, the glow goes away. However, for me, when the cursor leaves a button and does not then enter another button, the glow stays on the previously hovered over button. This is not what is supposed to happen.

I am currently looking a way to enable Aero in my machine. (as note, currently I am missing the Aero Glass, Aero Peek, and Aero Flip.
I did a clean install of Windows 7 on the machine. Because my screen is WideScreen, at first the graphics are all large and mushy. But at this point I HAVE AERO!
Then, I installed the driver for the gfx card, which was SIS UniVGA3 v.3.85. After installing and restarting, I get the normal resolution (1280x800) but NO AERO.
I thought this was driver problem, so I downloaded UniVGA5 v5.07, UniVGA5 v5.20 (which is the driver for Windows7, according to the site), and the SiS driver update from Windows Update, all of which didn't enable Aero for me.
I am completely stumped on this. I just don't get why the heck I get Aero WITHOUT driver, but no Aero with drivers.

I noticed that I do not have those on screen action animations(Like when the keyboard volume buttons are pressed it should show an animation in the middle of the screen with waves rippling underneath the message. Or when taken away from AC power, etc)
Here are some of my PC stats:

- Windows 7 Home Premium SP1(64bit)

A few shortcuts, such as Win+Home, don't work.In addition, a few animations aren't being displayed - a program being launched from the taskbar, the taskbar mouseover "glow" that follows the cursor, and the taskbar window preview fade-in effect. Others, such as opening/closing windows, windows being minimized, and Win+Tab still display.* All items are checked in SystemPropertiesPerformance - Visual Effects.* I've done some theme editing, but the problem still persists after switching to the default Windows 7 Aero theme (or any other).* Latest graphics card drivers are installed.

This problem has come back several times after reformatting. When opening or closing a window, the animations that would take miliseconds suddenly take 10 seconds. I can see the program running perfectly fine as it loads, but I am unable to interact with it. I then go into some games like Civilization 5 or Recettear and the animations that would be quick take about 10 times as long to execute. This did not become an issue until Mid May, and Reformatting delays the bug from coming back. the only recent additions in hardware are a replacement motherboard(old one broke, ram difficulties), and a new CPU fan. Flash videos also work just fine
I am running the following:
Intel Core i5
ATI 5870
8gb RAM
60gb SSD
500gb HDD
ASROCK P55 Pro
650 PSU

I'm talking about more than just making them transparent. I was hoping to find a way to change the start menus shape to whatever I design and have the window open/close/minimize/maximize animations be more like a Mac (the way it looks more like the window is being sucked away, rather than just disappear).

I'm working on an Hp pavilion elite 210y pc. It's got a lot of stuff like amd phenom II 945 quad core processor. I have windows 7 and internet explorer eight and an at&t modem hooked up directly to the computer, the status bar says it has full internet connection and the specs of that look fine but the internet is kind of slow, not my biggest concern. My main problem is that it won't play videos without making it choppy and hard to see even after a video is loaded completely it still lags and won't play correctly. Pretty much anything that is animated and over the internet is garbage; internet games, ads, even text comes up slow.

recently I used a software AVG PC Tuneup and it has never been a problem for me until a couple of days ago when I decided to install it on my DELL. Now, I went to system advisory and did a system scan on recommended settings, I pressed 'fix selected' and my Wifi was disabled, I tried everything. I can't get my wifi to work without plugging in my modem directly ot my pc. I noticed my wifi radio was disabled, so I pressed the F2 button but nothing worked. I am trying to re enable my wifi radio / wireless radio connection button but it won't work.
My program intel my wifi utility tells me my wifi is disabled but I can't enable it.

IE has a system pop-up that tells the user that disabling toolbars will speed up IE. It appears at the bottom of the window. I want to know how to disable this from IE9.lsewhere in these forums are the instructions for using the Group Policy Editor to do this; but gpedit.msc is not available in Windows 7 HomePremium edition. The post I saw says that HomePremium users have to edit the registry manually.I'm happy to do a registry edit but which entries do I have to edit and what values do I have to use, please?Other forums suggest setting the time delay to some seconds but this merely affects the time it takes for the pop-up to appear.

I've been trying for hours now to disable the alt+tab screen. I want to record a sequence of keystrokes, I want to be able to record ctrl+alt+tab, but whenever I press the keys, the alt-tab screen comes up so the buttons won't get recorded. I also have to record them in the actual order, I can't move them around so basically:
I need to be able to press ctrl+alt+tab without bringing up the swtich screen. I need to record theese keys in order. Is there something I can change, maybe in the registry?
Is it possible to change the hotkeys in windows? So that ctrl+alt+tab does nothing, and then switch it back after I've recorded the keystrokes?

I know I have not discovered anything new with the following problem, but I have not yet read a workable solution.
I find the "bleeps" and "bonks" most annoying when I am navigating around Windows 7, and I am well aware what it says in the personalise/sound menus. The trouble is that opting for "no sound", or switching off individual sounds does not work. I have spent many hours on this problem, to little avail.
if there is a glitsch somewhere in the system, and if there is a solution other than to turn the speakers off. This would be a bit drastic some some of the sounds are useful.

I do not like at all using my touch pad with my laptop as i have lost more stuff doing that. Typing along and it somehow highlights everything and if you aren't watching and aren't fast, the next key stroke zaps everything. So I found before on my old lap top that the fn key and the f3 key together will work as a toggle (that sometimes irritatingly toggles its own self) to turn touch pad on and off.On my new laptop I found it had a control to completely disable the touchpad which was way cool, one time, done. Now amazingly enough the control is not locatable and the touch pad is activated and the fn f3 fix does not work either.computer manufacturer says restore to default settings but I don't buy it there has to be another way as that will wipe out all my settings and more?

Whenever I get on the internet it freezes maybe every minute. I can still control the mouse but everything else is frozen. It stays that way for about 15 seconds and then unfreezes and I can go back to working. Nothing closes or crashes, it just freezes. I use mozilla firefox. I read somewhere that it might be add-ons crashing that make it freeze so I tried disabling all the addons but it still freezes.Should I just use IE9?

I am having trouble with windows 7 because I am trying specific words from US English to UK English (E.G. "appearance and personalization").
C:WindowsSystem32en-US (Shell32.dll.mui)
Now, because of the windows checksum. It will not allot me to successfully edit it without it reversing the changes. I'm trying to teach my Windows to learn proper English. I have been trying to use WfpReplace but the server to download seems to be down. [URL]. Is there any way to do this in a more simplified way?
