Disabling Windows Aero
Oct 13, 2009I ran the upgrade advisor and it said for my video card that I had to upgrade the video card. Any chance that by disabling windows aero i can skip having to upgrade my card?

View 2 RepliesA buddy of mine insists that disabling Aero (Desktop Window Management / DWM.EXE) will slow your system down (lets assume it has a mid level graphic card). His logic is that Aero offloads some of the work to your GPU. Disabling it will increase CPU usage. My logic is that DWM.EXE uses a "significant" amount of CPU, regardless of what the GPU is doing. DWM.EXE on most systems I've seen is usually at the top of the list when I go to task manager and sort by "CPU TIME". It uses more CPU time then my browser, more then explorer, etc etc.So how can disabling it increase CPU usage? Where is this change reflected (which process shows increase CPU usage if you disable DWM)? How would you prove or disprove this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhile there are a (small) handful of features of Aero that i'd like to use, there are many more that slow down the UI and/or make it distracting that I can't find a way to disable.(I even tried the "Basic" theme but it has a bug that discards font size settings made under the now-misnamed "color" dialog). So I end up in Windows Classic, which is being made more difficult to use, including the aforementioned "color" dialog.I've already been to the "Performance" settings and un-checked every animation available, but even after doing so two things remain:
1 The "glow" around control buttons. To me this is hideous and distracting.
2) Some animations still remain, slowing down the user interface.
To be clear, here's what I might like to use in Aero:
1) taskbar window previews
2) the program switching mechanisms (Flip or ALT+TAB)
3) maybe transparency would look okay, without the animations
Bottom line, Microsoft has bundled both good and bad features in this artificial "feature" called Aero, instead of making the features available individually, and made some of the Aero animations impossible to disable (as far as I know).
I am currently looking a way to enable Aero in my machine. (as note, currently I am missing the Aero Glass, Aero Peek, and Aero Flip.
I did a clean install of Windows 7 on the machine. Because my screen is WideScreen, at first the graphics are all large and mushy. But at this point I HAVE AERO!
Then, I installed the driver for the gfx card, which was SIS UniVGA3 v.3.85. After installing and restarting, I get the normal resolution (1280x800) but NO AERO.
I thought this was driver problem, so I downloaded UniVGA5 v5.07, UniVGA5 v5.20 (which is the driver for Windows7, according to the site), and the SiS driver update from Windows Update, all of which didn't enable Aero for me.
I am completely stumped on this. I just don't get why the heck I get Aero WITHOUT driver, but no Aero with drivers.
I know I have not discovered anything new with the following problem, but I have not yet read a workable solution.
I find the "bleeps" and "bonks" most annoying when I am navigating around Windows 7, and I am well aware what it says in the personalise/sound menus. The trouble is that opting for "no sound", or switching off individual sounds does not work. I have spent many hours on this problem, to little avail.
if there is a glitsch somewhere in the system, and if there is a solution other than to turn the speakers off. This would be a bit drastic some some of the sounds are useful.
For some reason something is disabling the keyboard in windows 7 I notice the speech and on screen keyboard on start up? could that be whats disabling the keyboard?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to optimize my computer a bit, and in msconfig I have found many services from application that, at the best I only use occasionally. My question is, if I disable a service that is needed for an application, will it automatically be restarted when trying to run said application? Or do some applications really need to do something at startup to be fully functionally (seems a bit weird to me, but you never know...)

View 9 Replies View RelatedFinally took the plunge and got a 3 pack Windows 7 Home.
I've done searches in google and on the forums and everything points me to Local Policy (which I have done for years with XPPro), which Home doesn't have.
I read about Parental control, problem is, I need to disable my wife/in laws from installing apps and from what I read that doesn't really prevent them from installing apps anyways.
Is there anyway to do it in Home edition? Not really concerned with wife/in laws as much as I am with kids. Although they only have access to Miniclip and handful of other sites, some of these apps/links/download/installs can get nasty.
Also I've been using ProCon for Mozilla site control with WinXP Pro. Should I stick with that or does Windows 7 offer anything new as far as website access. I simply need to define which sites kids can access.
disabling the explorer.exe from starting with windows 7. I want to just run media center without the explorer in the background. How can i do this. Also how do add my games and internet explorer to extras in media center.

Please contact your system Administrator."I know why it is popping up, as I blocked a file from running in my O/S (Windows7-64bit Ultimate), but I would like to disable the message from appearing altogether, as it is so invasive that it will minimize fullscreen movies & apps and pop-up whenever it blocks the file from running. I am logged in to the only (Administrator) account on this computer.I know of 3 ways to restrict a file from running in Windows 7:1.Right-clicking the file and selecting "properties" and then modifying the permissions under "SYSTEM" to "Deny" "Read & Execute"2.Local Security Policy Console3.Group Policy ConsoleI guess my question is.. How can I make this notification 'silent'? (or disable the notification altogether)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 1 desktop and 2 laptops all running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Everything was working find till I had a fatal crash HD crash. Had to reinstall everything new on a Fresh HD.With the New install, my laptops can't access my desktop with out a network name and password?!? HOWEVER, my desktop can access share files on both laptops, but not the other way around. I've had things working before...and nothing has changed except the new OS install on a new HD.I don't understand what I am missing? All comps are able to see each other, I just cant get rid of the prompt for the user name and password when trying to access the fresh install on my desktop.I've gone in to the advance network sharing settings and check the radio button to "turn off password protected sharing" That should have done the trick. It seems to work on my laptops....but NO DICE????Last desperate thing, I even set up a HOMEGROUP(which i never needed to since i got the file share to work fine) BUT even in the HOMEGROUP, the same prompt for a user name and password keeps popping up when trying to access the desktop and Not from the desktop to the laptops?

View 2 Replies View Relatedi booted up my comp and Aero wasnt enabled. I reinstalled my graphics drivers, it came back on. However, whenever I restart my comp, Aero disables again. so , if I reinstall my graphics drivers every time i boot there wouldn't be an issue, but thats a bit annoying. So I ran the windows diagnostic tool for aero and it told me that my desktop window manager was disabled. So I ran services.msc and found the desktop window manager in the list, only it said that hte desktop window manager was in face running and operational. [code]

BUT i cannot seem to enable them.
I have tried all the hacks out there on the Internet and cannot seem to get it to work.
I have also updated my driver etc.
My question is, with my current hardware, is there anyway to get aero to work?
I have previously had vista and i got aero to work somehow, but i cant remember.

AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ 2.0 GHz
512mb RAM
Nvidia GeForce Mx 440 with agp8x

View 4 Replies View Related[code] This was the error I received for many months when I attempted to play a game or watch a video through Media Player Classic. At the same time, I always got the error that Desktop Window Manager had stopped working and was closed upon start-up, so I had no access to Windows Aero et al. Basically, the errors went hand in hand with each other. Then after a while, the computer began freezing after 20 minutes of use. So now, even if I went and used Driver Sweeper to remove all old drivers for the GPU, and installed fresh drivers, the computer would freeze within 20 minutes of use. (Previously to that, a fresh install guaranteed no problems atleast for a week)I finally decided it had to be a GPU error, so I sent in the GPU for repair at ASUS. I still haven't received it back, but in the meanwhile, installed an old BFG 7800GTX I had lying around to have a temporary computer.Clearly it means it's not the GPU's fault. Is it the RAM? The Motherboard? Maybe not enough power to the system? [code]

View 7 Replies View RelatedI was just sitting on my bed next to my computer when I saw something weird happen, my aero theme turned off and my CPU and GPU temps both started to rise. I saw my CPU temps getting higher than I normally see them go even while gaming so I reached over and wiggle my mouse around a little. My theme went back to aero and the temps went right back down to idle. Anyone know what this could have been? I'm extremely scared to leave my PC on when I leave the house now thinking that it might overheat.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe IT department has decided to install windows 7 on a few of the computers at the campus library. These machines equipped with Windows 7 already feel MUCH faster and more reliable. We now have the benefit of being able to run the aero interface now. So, you can see how much of a positive difference this is.There is one detail that annoys the heck out of me, that I have noticed on all types of computers able to display aero, regardless of the brand or the speed of the computer. This has to do with the fade in / fade out animation that that aero uses. When a window gets created and fades in, the "blur" of the transparent glass effect is not enabled until the last few frames of the animation. This makes it look like the last few frames are skipped, giving the window a "jump" effect, because the glass theme blur is not enabled until the last few frames of the animation, much unlike Vista. The exact same thing happens for the fade out animation, except this "jump" or "jerk" happens during the first frames, because the glass in the titlebar is unblurred, then the rest of the transition happens. This effect makes Windows 7 feel buggy and cheap, and detracts from the GUI experience that I have expected to at least be like Vista's, or better.
