View 2 RepliesI'm working my sister's Dell Inspiron n5010 running Windows 7 Enterprise. It has been fine until this week when it became slow to the point of unusable. I had installed Microsoft Security Essentials on it for her, and she said one night when she shut it down, it installed updates. It finished and shut down. Next morning, she opened the lid and the screen was on saying "installing update 1 of 12, 0%" as if it had never finished and froze up from the night before. It finally finished and when it booted into Windows, I tried to run a virus scan, but it said Security Essentials was out of date and failed to start. I tried unsuccessfully to update it, and I couldn't get much of anything else to run either, it was so slow. I used my install disc to start fresh with a new install of Windows, and it seemed to fix it, until I got to installing drivers. before beginning on the drivers, I installed Security Essentials and MalwareBytes, ran scans, and they came up clean. As soon as I started installing drivers, though, it became slow, froze up, and I was back to square one. Now when it tries to boot to Windows, it gives two options: launch startup repair (which freezes) or start Windows normally (which also freezes). Booting from the install disc to start again with a Windows install won't even work now. As soon as it boots from the cd, it freezes.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter window installed some new updates my dell laptop was not able to start. It will boot and go in the screen for Window failed to start. "A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. Launch Startup Repair or Start Window Normally." I tired both options but eventually leads back to this page. Then i tried to enter all the safe mode with no luck. I then tried "Last Know Good Configuration" but with no hope leading back to the same screen.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi recently got a computer from my aunt, and decided to put windows 7 on it. Before I installed it, I put in a Geforce 8800 graphics card and a (2nd) cd rom drive. After 20 failed attempts to install windows 7 (it kept freezing at the completing installation part) it worked after i disconnected the new graphics card and one of the hard drives. Now, however, i keep on getting periodic blue screens with the following error messages : Memory Management, and PFN_List Corrupt. I ran a memory diagnostic and it said that the memory is fine. What is wrong with my computer? I also ran a system repair thing from the windows 7 disk, and it came up with this error: System File Integrity Check and Repair Error Code 0X490
My Hardware is:
AMD Anthlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
2 Hitachi HDT725032VLA SCSI 320 gb hard drives
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GS Graphics Card
3gb of system memory
I try to start my Dell Inspiron 5010 laptop and I get "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl Alt Del to recover"Every page I've Googled about this error tells me my hard drive is shot and needs to be replaced. I'm in total denial so, can this really be? Have I lost all my data? Does the hard drive need to be gutted and replaced?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 17R (7010) that I bought brand new and only used for about a year. The system keeps crashing, displaying various error codes that range from memory management to bad pool header.I've tried replacing the hard drive, the RAM cards, testing the video card, reinstalling Windows 7 AND flashing the BIOS.I can say that I will absolutely never purchase a Dell again, simply for the customer service. I was a month inside of my warranty when this started happening, and Dell kept putting me off until the remainder of my warranty expired.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy master boot record has become corrupted, but I can't even get to safe mode command prompt. When you press F8 at boot up and make the selection, the basic drivers start to load but halt at disk. I looked up these errors online, and it seems the consensus is to use the bootrec.exe /FixMBR command, or some flavor of such. But I can't even get that far! I've changed the Boot Order in BIOS so that an Installation DVD will take precedence, but I never get to the windows installation screen. It continues to try to boot from the hard drive and the cycle starts all over. I do have a copy of Acronis Backup 2009, I was able to have it boot, but I didn't have any options to open a command prompt. If this was a desktop, I'd simply open it up and install the drive in a good computer I have and work on it.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi have a dell inspiron 545s windows 7 home premium from dell.it is a desktop.it is about 2 years old.a few months ago a virus shut my computer down and i paid $275 for the software and software warranty. i also paid an additional $119 for 2 years unlimited technical support. after the technician got my computer up and running again i discovered the the audio for everything (Internet for music and movies) is very low and inaudible and also scrambled. i couldn't fix it myself for weeks so i called dell for help. they checked and discovered the speakers are fine. they told me to pay $59 for a technician to look into it (someone on a website says it's only good for 30 days) and fix the sound system if he could, otherwise i would have to buy a sound card of other hardware and install it myself. my computer which includes the monitor and keyboard and mouse only costs $650. if i shell out anymore i should buy another computer.i like my computer, and i'm trying not to throw anything of the sort into the landfill if i can help it.besides i'm out of a job. do you think i should pay dell any further since that problem only cropped up after they fixed the computer and i wasn't even using the audio when it went down?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've tried F8, F2, and F12 to get to safe mode or startup options but all I ever get is the option to either start normally or launch repair. The function keys appear to do nothing. Launch normally doesn't work and just cycles me back to the two options again. Repairing just keeps "repairing" with nothing ever happening indefinitely. It will ask in the beginning if I want to restore to a different time, and if I click yes, nothing happens except that it keeps "repairing". There's nothing important on the hard drive that needs to be saved. I want to reformat, but I didn't get any disks with the computer, since it said I could use Dell Restore on my desktop, which of course I can't access now. Is there any free, safe program I can use to boot it up and restore? And can I even use a disk to restore if I can't access the advanced boot options to change it to "boot from disk"?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to sell my Dell XPS L401X (XPS 14) that I bought in December of 2010 but I have encountered a serious problem with it. I loaded the computer from factory settings as it had blue screen and refused to start up without startup repair and dell datasafe backup or w/e that program is called. I loaded it up, installed Google Chrome, cleared my history on IE, downloaded MSE, the latest nvidia drivers and java 7 64 and deleted all those and emptied the recycle bin once done installing those. I shut down the computer to install updates and get a blue screen as soon as it passes the startup screen. Every time I attempt to launch using startup repair it just opens up another window with a black screen and the option of startup repair and normal repair, never actually going to startup repair, just continually refreshing every time I select startup repair.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy laptop has Windows 7 installed. My Toshiba Satellite L650 started slowing down and freezing every hour or so while for a few weeks which progressively got more often. I thought it was the new modem/router the cable company installed and maybe got a bad virus. I purchased Norton 2012 and after talking w/Toshiba support did a system restore by holding down the "0" button. This seemed to work but not for long, a week later the same issues were occurring. I did another system restore and it worked for a couple of days. Chkdsk did find bad clusters. Now start up repair keeps trying to fix it when I turn it on but it can't.I have ordered a new hard drive from Tiger Direct a few days ago, it is on back order, not sure when I'll get it.I'm afraid to use the start up repair disk that I made on the new hard drive when it does come.My questions are: is there any other way I should be going about fixing this 14 month old laptop? Also, I don't have the original software disks, they didn't come with the computer so I either have to order a copy from Toshiba or should I use that repair disk? Can software cause an issue like this?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently had to replace my motherboard when a power failure killed my HP Compaq nx9420, running Windows 7. When the repair was complete, the laptop would no longer boot to Windows on the internal HDD. Instead it boots to startup repair. Startup repair fails with the message, "Cannot repair this computer automatically".
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron N4010 running Windows 7. Last night I was printing off PDF files and listening to a CD when the song that was playing got stuck and the print job I'd just ordered stalled. Then a horrible, loud, relentless sort of whirring noise came out of the speakers and wouldn't stop and the computer was completely unresponsive. This has happened before, last December, and I did what I did then...I just forcibly shut it down. When I started it back up, I could choose between starting normally or running Startup Repair, which was recommended. I swear I chose to start normally, but I can't be totally sure. I walked out of the room to do a couple things and when I went back I saw Startup Repair running and it said it could take over an hour. I had to leave for work in 20 minutes, so I decided to just leave it on. 9 hours later, when I got home, it was STILL going. I tried to cancel, and was informed that the current operation could not be canceled. I forced a shut down again (maybe not the brightest thing but I couldn't think of anything else) and even disconnected the battery. Then I started it up...got the same choice and chose to start Windows...and Startup Repair started again. I managed to cancel and shut down with the OFF button again. Restarted and chose Windows...same thing. Restarted and chose Setup Repair, same result. I cannot do or open anything. I don't know if putting the startup discs in it would even register...and I'm not sure I even have any, as Windows 7 came pre-installed. I haven't backed up my hard drive in a loooong time and I can't afford a new machine.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm new to startup repair and not sure of what it is actually doing but when i start my laptop i get a choice of start windows normally or startup and repair. If i click start windows normally it loads as normal but then i get black screen and the mouse nothing else. When i choose startup repair its attempting repairs and not getting any further.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI turned on my laptop this morning after hibernation and said there was a fatal error coming out of hibernation, so I turned it off and chose "Launch Startup Repair" which was recommended, instead of "Start Windows Normally." After about half an hour it looked as though all had been fixed after a system restore. However, on restarting my laptop everything went slowly, start up was slower than usual. I couldn't open anything on the desktop or click the start menu without it freezing. After getting sick of this, I clicked shut down which also took forever as well.
