View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I bought a crossover cable just to connect two laptops. Like, a network. Mine is running on windows 7 and the other laptop is running on Vista. So I configured both laptops to be in the same workgroup (left the homegroup in Windows 7) and configured both NIC's to have an IP in the same class - one of them is 10.1.1.1 and the other one is 10.1.1.2 and subnet masks are the same 255.255.255.0. Now, I should be able to ping each of the laptops. But it pings only from Vista (10.1.1.2) to Windows 7 (10.1.1.1) and not the other way.
Network window in Windows 7 shows some computers in the different network, but in the same building, but does not show the laptop connected with the crossover cable. Network window in win vista does not show any computers. Both computers have some shared folders (for users Guest and Everyone).
I would really like to know what am I doing wrong, and how do I connect these two computers so I could easily transfer some files?
I recently reinstalled windows and on a new hard drive and now it says my ethernet controller needs to be update. Without it i cannot use the internet without connecting to wifi, how do i update it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy windows home server has decided to stop communicating with the client machines. The connector software won't connect (reinstalling makes no difference), remote desktop times out, manually shutting down (by pressing the power button) and restarting also fails to correct the problem.I can ping the server (average response time 3ms)The Home Server machine is headless and although there is a connector the only monitor I have doesn't fit the connector.I susoect that the internal battery may have gone flat and may be the servers clock is out of sync with the client machine (but even when the server is asleep its still connected to the mains).
Someone has said that I can connect a laptop to the sever via an ethernet cable but the only instructions I can find say that I have to set the IP address on both machines to be the same - Is this correct or is there another way of connecting?
i want to transfer files, remote desktop, lan gaming....actualy lan gaming works fine without doing anything just connecting the cablebut how do i transfer files and remote desktop....what software do i need???
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy girlfriends parents have bought a new compaq laptop with windows 7. Connected up to the internet by cable & wireless no problem. Yesterday couldn't do either and found it nearly impossible to get into the routers settings to check them. Kept saying limited access. I've tried various things to no avail. Then I noticed that my iphone could connect to the router, so I ruled out a router problem. I brought the laptop home and it wouldn't connect to our router, so I'm presuming it's a settings problem. But now I'm stuck!

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using a Dell Studio 1557 model. I downloaded the Windows Live Essentials update yesterday and it prompted me to restart my laptop. I meant to click "Postpone" but I clicked "Restart" accidentally. This was in the middle of while I was running Firefox and running Winamp (as far as I can remember). So when the computer was back on I noticed I totally lost the internet connection. Even though the CAT5 cable is connected, the laptop does not recognize it at all. It simply says "Not Connected". And just today I realized that whenever the Ethernet cable is connected to the computer the computer periodically(every other second or so)makes a faint buzzing noise. This is something I had not noticed before. I replaced the cable with a new one and the same thing still happens.I think the modem is working fine since my roommate can access the internet. On the modem where the lights should be on for my connection, it is periodically blinking.
View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently, I upgraded the houses' internet to fiber (or so its called in Chinese, living abroad in Shanghai BTW)and the within the first day of upgrading, I've seen a tremendous increase in internet speeds. However, within a day, a new problem also came up.Whenever I plug the ethernet cable into its port at the back of my PC, all the open programs suddenly stop responding, and then my PC freezes. I've tried booting up without the ethernet cable plugged in, and everything works perfectly. Yet the second I plug in the ethernet, everything stops working. The conditions are as follows: -I am unable to CTRL - ALT - DELETE to bring up task manager.- The mouse cursor is still moveable, but nothing can be clicked or selected-The cursor turns into the spinning loading circle, but never finishes whatever it's trying to do.I am forced to manually power down (hold the power button or unplug) the PC.However, rebooting in Safe Mode with Networking yields no problems. The internet connects just fine, and there is no freezing/lagging going on at all. I'm currently posting this from Safe mode w/ Networking. The conditions are pretty much the same when I plug in the ethernet cable to my Macbook. Chrome, or whatever I'm using simply stops responding, and I get the spinning rainbow pinwheel of doom. Forced to manually power off. This has also occurred to a friends' Macbook when he plugged in the Ethernet in an adjacent room.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy laptop won't work with the Ethernet cable and say it has an IP conflict. All my computers have an IP address starting with 192 and the laptop has an IP address starting with 169. I did an ipconfig and on ipv4 is where I got the IP addresses. I tried to do an ipconfig / release but it won't release the IP address because of the wireless media.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an HP laptop and out of the blue, it will just not connect to the internet wirelessly. It will say connected but no internet access. This happens and random times, at least once a week, and for exactly 24 hours between 1 a.m. one day to 1 a.m. the next day. I can connect via ethernet cable just fine. My phone and TV can connect wirelessly, but not my internet.I have tried resetting my router/modem multiple times when this has happened to no avail. I have factory restored my computer. I have deleted my driver and reinstalled it. Literally the only thing that has worked thus far is connecting to an ethernet cable. I called my ISP and they said my router is fine and nothing is wrong with it.Before you ask, NO, I don't have any monitoring software or any software that prevents the use of internet after a certain time. Keep in mind that my computer is totally factory resetored, totally clean, nothing on it but what it came with.

View 7 Replies View RelatedOne of my Windows 7 computer has been getting an error for 24 hours that the ethernet cable is not detected and it can not connect to the internet. Other Windows 7 computers on the same router/internet connection work fine.I have already tried the following all of which were not successful.
-Plug in a different cable.
-Reboot the computer.
-Disable and then re-enable the connection.
-Restore to a previous system point.
-Inspect the connector for a problem with the pins.
-Look at the device manager for problems.
-Work through the windows troubleshooter.
The device is described as a Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet, although it does not appear to be a separate card and looks to be built into the motherboard. The Motherboard is Alienware 04VFW2 version A02.

I am trying this on two different computers. One is XP Pro, and the other is Windows 7 Pro. I would prefer the XP machine, but will sacrifice the Windows 7 machine to this if I have to.
Both the PC and the TV show connectivity at the ports, but there is no display on the TV. Multiple Monitors do NOT show in either machine.

View 1 Replies View Relatedanyway to use an ethernet cable to directly connect my printer to my computer or is there no such thing?
I have an older printer which has no USB connection. My new computer also does not have the old style printer port which is required for this printer.
My printer does however have an ethernet port and I was wondering if there is anyway to connect directly to my computer using an ethernet cable.
I realise I can connect my printer to my router but this sits on the otherside of my house and it is not practical for me to have my printer so far from my computer.
I own a toshiba satellite C655-S5061 with win7x64 sp1 ultimate installed on it. My internet (wired) connection used to work fine until yesterday. Troubleshooter says "an ethernet cable is not properly plugged in or might be broken", Tried a repair install, updated drivers, reinstalled drivers but of no avail. The ethernet cable when connected to other laptop works fine.
