Cant Access Some Files?
Sep 21, 2010
I am running 64 bit version of win 7 ultimate build 7600. I cant access some files, such as c:documents and settings, which is actually a shortcut. When i go to"users" the files there have a small lock on them but i can still open them up so why cant i open up c:documents and settings? I tried right clicking/properties/security and making changes there but they wont work. I get notices that i cant make any changes

I've got a new PC running Windows 7 Home 64-bit. It works well and I'm very pleased.I've just tried importing my Outlook.pst file from my old computer (ran Win XP Pro) which died (partition got partially deleted). I've managed to access it using "Find and Mount" which will display the partition as a drive in My Computer and I can access all files bar those in "Documents & Settings" which it comes up saying I don't have permisson to access.I've tried to take ownership of these files, however I get an error saying "The media is write protected". Is there anything I can do to recover the files?

Now when i go to my windows.old folder i cannt find my: pictures, music, e.g.I remember doing the same thing with xp and i had to take owner ship of the folder. I think i have took owner ship of my user folder and i still cant find my stuff. Im adminI was admin on my last installI know the stuff is in the folder due to how much space is took up on my drive and when i slect the folder to make it not read only it says mine craft is there.

what i did is removing all the folders at "C/users/administrator " to C/users/hec/" the account that i use then i logged off and logged in to the administrator account and removed the folders again from hec account to admin account and refreshed the desktop and then i removerd all the folders from C/users/administrator . . to C/users/hec . .
and i disabled all the account from "computer management" and logged of and and started my PC in safe mode and opened admin account and enabled hec account and disabled all other accounts and then i restarted the PC and opened hec account and now i can see all my files and folders but it says i don't have the rights to access them . .
and when i open any folder in my desktop it shows semi-empty .. like for example my music folder it has nothing . .only the music that came with windows 7 and only the stock photos . . and also all the files and folders and my games . . etc shows with a little golden lock near the icon.

trying to get some help solving an issue my PC is having. I am getting constant blue screens and need to diagnose the problem, but I cannot access my minidump files. I have tried moving them to other folders and also tried using the "take ownership" command. Yet still I cannot get the files to open. I can't open them in wordpad/notepad or even the WINdebugger. I was hoping someone might know how to access the files.

Several days ago I managed to synchronize my computer with my Xbox 360 using Windows Media Center. I don't know what happened between now and then, but my computer seems to have locked my administrative controls. Most of my files I had beforehand are denying me the ability to do anything, except open and view the contents.

I had a sudden hard drive crash and have a system image back up on an external drive.I can't remove and replace the hard drive from the computer because there is about 2 inches of space to get a screwdriver in.I plugged my external drive into a laptop and followed the procedure for attaching a .vhd file.I have two files backed up on the same evening for some reason, 54 GB and 90GB.I couldn't get the 90GB vhd to attach properly until I unchecked the read only tab, it mounted, but I couldn't access any files.I clicked on the file, it asked me to click continue with admin control to permanently give access, it takes a few mins to load...but no files to open.

Recently it started to load slowly and when I try to play files from it, it says 'Error -43: a file could not be found ('xxxx.mov'). The HD shows up in disk management and my computer, but I can only access a handful of files. Is there a way to recover the rest of them?

I want to be able to access and change files on my main pc, from my laptop which is in a different room, same with my wife's pc as well. Each time I go the network, I can see the computers, but each time I want to access files it comes up asking for password and user name.I have never set a user name or password and it is confusing the hell out of me to sort this out....
1.do I have to make sure the files are in a particular place, and saved in that place all the time?
2.can I not make "my documents" available to my wife and my laptop, and vice versa if they are swtiched on?
There must be a way to share our individual files and make them read write for ourselves?

I recently reformatted my hard drive so before I moved all the files I wanted to my external hard drive.
So I'm all formatted with Windows 7 Ultimate re-installed and I'm trying to move all the files back. For whatever reason, a couple pictures (.jpg) and a couple videos (.avi) will not move or open. They were all contained in the same folder.
It was saying access denied and I needed permission from S-1-5-....gigantic number. So I changed the ownership and permissions of the files and the folders. Now it says I need permission from myself (Laptop/Kevin). I am the only account and have administrator privileges.

I had Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed.I caught a virus, could not get rid of it, kept getting forcefully logged off, and couldn't manage anything from safe mode, or do a sys. restore either.Quickly got irritated, and formatted C: drive and reinstalled. After installation I navigated to the D: partition, however, the explorer simply says that this folder is empty. under properties, the D: drive is still 37GB full and 231 GB empty, I do not have any other partitions.

I had Windows XP operating system with users and saved my files on a partition. Just installed Windows 7 and now I can't access the partitioned files due to permissions. If I try to open a file, I get the message "You Don't Currently Have Permission To Access This Folder: Click continue to permanently get access to this folder". If I click continue, it tells me to go to the security tab. Once there, it tells me it's unable to display the current owner. I can still gain access to the specific folder (as an administrator) but not the sub-folders. There are thousands of folders and I would have to do them individually. Is there a way to blanket share all the files on my partitioned drive?

But when I try to open my files, some programs said that they can't create folder in the target location (iPod Video Converter), some said that they need administrator permission to put the file I've downloaded (Internet Download Manager), and some said that they can't open the file (Windows Media Player Classic - from K-Lite Mega Codec)

I have set up a Windows 7 machine that has a VPN incoming connection set-up, I have set up my router properly so that someone can connect via VPN, specifically me, from work, and from my laptop when I am out of the house. The reason for the VPN is to have the ability to have access to my files at my home office when I am away from it.
I an using a Mac with OS X 10.7 at work, and have set up the VPN and can see the VPN server that is at the home office, but when I open it, it give a connection failed error.
I can remote desktop with the VPN server, using team viewer and see that there is a connection and that it is my office mac.
Am I missing something that will allow me to view my files? Do I have something configured incorrectly? I have set up my network shares, is there a certain way that I need to set them up?

I have few XP Pro PCs and a windows 7 Pro x64. The XP PCs can see and access the shared Windows 7 but the Windows 7 couldn't. Windows 7 can see the XPs but when i click on the XPPCs it said Windows Can't Access XP-pc. I click the Detail and it said Network Path Wasn't found. I tried to Diagnostics and it couldn't find the problem. It looks like firewall blocked to me but i disabled windows firewall and security center from windows services. XPPCs don't have any firewall. from Windows 7 i can ping those XPs. I enabled most of the services related to the network.
From the windows7 can't open the its shared folders either. it said the network path was not fould

I can see a generic storage device listed under the universal serial bus controllers in the device manager and am able to see the 'safely remove hardware' icon in my tray. Unfortunately, the only thing that I see in disk management is an 'unknown' disk. The hard drive is listed by manufacturer in the device manager; however, I am not able to open it from this site. And, when I look at the items 'attached' to my computer, the drive is not visible.
