Cannot Identify Network Or Share Internet
Feb 5, 2011
My computer has and onboard PCIe network card and another PCI network card. I have connected my cable modem to the PCI network card using ethernet cable and have the internet on my computer working fine. This computer then connects to the other computers in my network using a hub, but it keeps putting this connection as a public network and wont share the internet to the rest of my machines even though I have the computers on the same workgroup and sharing enabled. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

I've recently have a Sony Vaio laptop that will not get an IP addess and cannot identify networks. Both wired and wireless stay at identifying network, no internet access. At this point i've uninstalled Bonjour, reset my winsock catalog, checked the LSP, checked proxy setting - none, tried static information with no luck, uninstalled devices and reinstalled, deleted device drivers and reinstalled with new drivers, ran tweaking to reregister files, remove policies set by infections and so forth. I've scanned the PC with Combofix, Emsisoft Emergency Kit, TDSSkiller, and Malwarebytes and have found nothing. I've also removed the drive and scanned it externally. I'm almost down to a backup and reload. I've also remove IPv4 and IPv6 and reinstalled.

My dads laptop worked fine with the WIFI for about 1,5 year, and now yesterday his computer won't identify our router. I have tried reinstalling the driver to his wireless hardware and that didnt work. I have tried with a static IP, but i wasn't sure if i did that correctly, so i can't safely say that what i did with the static IP would work either way.

I have just set up a new Windows 7 computer and am trying to access the HD across a home wireless network from my XP laptop. XP can see the Windows 7 but it is asking for USER NAME and PASSWORD. I put in, what i think is, my user name on the Windows 7 in the dialog box and then put in the password that I use to log into the Windows 7 when I boot it up but it rejects these. I went to look on the Windows 7 for user name and password and can't seem to find it in PROPERTIES of COMUPTER.

Just today I decided to download the Windows 8 consumer preview and setup my PC to dual boot with it.I am running Windows 7 home premium 64bit and the 64 bit windows 8 on my other partition. After setting up a separate partition on my hard drive and loading windows8 to this partition, I was all up and running. I had no problems setting up or running windows 8, the problem came when I booted back to windows 7 for the first time. When I booted into windows 7, I was getting the "unable to identify network" error, and no network connectivity.
First thing I tried was simply disable/enabling my network adapter thinking it was just some hiccup. No luck there. Next I pulled the power from my router, and let it completely reboot. Still no luck. I then shut down my pc and booted back into windows 8 and sure enough I am able to get internet connectivity when I am running windows 8. This got me to thinking that when I loaded windows 8 there may be some new drivers installed for my network card that are somehow causing issues when I load into windows 7 again. Not sure how this is possible.
I was under the understanding that when I loaded Win8 to the separate partition that it would keep all it's drivers and settings there and not effect anything when I was loaded back on windows 7 (This logic could be completely wrong, I don't know). So I rebooted and loaded back into windows 7, went into device manager and uninstalled both network adapters and drivers, and rebooted into windows 7 again so it could re-discover and setup the network cards with default windows 7 drivers. This did not work either and I am still getting the same error.

Last Friday my main desktop crashed (lost power to the machine) and on restarting the PC was unable to "identify" the network. By identify, I mean, when using "Network and Sharing Centre" on the basic network information page, the PC shows "Identifying" under "active networks" - no matter how long I leave the PC.
PC details
Model: Packard Bell Power x-30
Processor i7 870 @2.93GHz
RAM: 8GB
O/S: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
Modem Router details
Netgear N300 Wireless Dual Band ADSL2+ Modem Router
The main desktop is connected to the modem router (via Ethernet). The modem router is showing no sign of any problems itself, all the dashboard lights look ok (i.e. power is on, port 1 shows the Ethernet connection in place, both wireless bands are lit, the DSL is lit and so is the internet). The household contains a number of laptops which continue to work ok wirelessly and/or wired through Ethernet. Even mobile phones are accessing the wi-fi ok.
The DNS Server address looks ok, as that is the address of the web page to the router. I cannot access that web page (address) via the main desktop, but I can from other devices ok. Having gone through Device Manager the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is showing as "working properly". I have tried pinging the DNS Server address, and that fail. I have gone through a system restore to a previous point (before the day of the crash) but that seems to have made no difference either.
I have attempted to set the IP addresses (for TCP/IPv4) directly
IP address 192.168.0.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
And therefore forced to set the DNS Server address too
Preferred DNS server: 192.68.0.1
But I don't know what to set for the alternate DNS Server, so left blank. This seems to step me forward, in that the device/network is now identified. However the internet access is still not work, as the "DNS Server is not responding".

I have a question about sharing my Internet. Ok my internet provider sends me some analogue signals, my modems gets them, converts them to digital signals and then, sends this Connection to where it should go (I mean I can use this connection using e.g. wifi). I have a vpn connection. I wanna use it on my mobile. My mobile doesn't support vpn configuration. So somehow I should send the vpn connection from my pc and modem. How can I share the internet I am using in my pc using my WiFi modem?

I tried to find answer on forum but failed
My situation:
I've got two PCs.
* 1st (Windows 7 x64) has two ethernet cards:
- internet is connected to the first card
- other connected to switch
* 2nd is a laptop (Windows 7 x86) with one ethernet card connected to switch
I can see many unknown PC's in network devices. They are my Internet provider other clients. I can see my laptop there as well but cannot access it.
From 1st PC I can just "join" homegroup. From 2nd - just "create".
Created from 2nd PC homegroup is not accessible from 1st pc (wrong password, even if it is right one)
So I am confused how should I set up everything that:
- both pc's can be accessible from each other
- 1st pc will share internet connection with 2nd pc.

I am using a VPN connection from my Android phone to my home PC by using the "default" Windows 7 (Ultimate x64) VPN feature. The connection works fine, but when I connect with my phone running Android 2.3.6 to this VPN, I loose the Internet connection on my phone and am only able to access the home LAN. Since the Android client doesn't have much settings to configure in this area, I figured the solution to my problem would be if the VPN server could share it's Internet connection to the VPN.

I was wondering if it's possible to share files and/or folders over the internet with your friend? By sharing I mean both people accessing the same folders and when someone edits something, the same thing happens on the other side. I know this is possible over the same LAN network, but what I want to know if this is possible if you aren't in the same network.

Have recently bought a Cobra CIR 1000A internet radio that works fine connecting wirelessly for radio stations. Problem 1 is in the instruction booklet it explains how to setup Media Sharing and PlayMusic on the Internet radio for WMP 11 . No mention of WMP 12 which I have installed. Radio has latest software installed.WMP 12 reports no media devices found. The fact the radio plays stations ok is proof enough that my network sees it all right.I have enabled and disabled everything and am now at a loss to how to fix it.Am thinking of replacing WMP 12 with WMP 11 but am obviously using Windows7

Is it possible to do that ? I knew it might be possible but I found some saying that if the ADSL modem is connected using LAN then it will not work.
So here's my setup:
PC A and PC B (Both using Windows 7 64)
> PC A got two LAN port (LAN C and D)
> PC B got one LAN port
Cross Over cable
ADSL Modem - Connected to PC A via LAN C
What I want to do is connect the crossover via my PC A's LAN C to PC B's LAN to share the internet connection. Is it possible ? I had managed to make the PC B joined my PC A in homegroup, which mean file sharing has no problem at all. I just doesn't know how to set the IP, DNS, gateway to make my PC B access my PC A internet. Any help ? Please let me know it is possible.

I have a network in the house with a mix of windows operating systems. My server is just windows XP SP3 sharing folders across the network by user name login. They are all on a workgroup not domain and the Windows 7 PC's do not have homegroup enabled and all the settings are enabled in the sharing centre options, ie network iscovery etc.WirelessLaptop 1 running Windows 7, Laptop 2 running Windows XP SP3, when accessing the shared folders on the server will bring up a login screen so you can input your user name and password. You then can access your allocated shared folders.WiredAll wired PC's when accessing the shared folders on the server will bring up a login screen so you can input your user name and password. You then can access your allocated shared folders. Mainly Windows 7 now. Windows XP was previously installed and worked ok also. The problem is that on a new install of Windows 7 on a laptop when you click the Server icon in windows explorer, the server automatically shows all of the available folders and no-login screen. This means that you cant login to view your allocated folders on the server.

I have a few computers on the network and they have shared files.I can see their shares fine, they can't see mine.
192.168.0.1 ->this doesn't work for them, they keep getting the error that they don't have permission to acess it.
192.168.0.1SharedFolder
this works for them. They are mixed machines, vista, windows7 but they all get the error when trying to connect directly to my ip.
I tried enabling and then disabling homegroup(not using it btw) turning password protected sharing on and off, NOTHING works
What does one have to reset/fix in order to connect to the ip and see the shares on that machine.

Also I am having difficutly sharing my folders on the network. The other computers in my home operate on Vista or lower so I am not sure of the issue.
I have lowered the encryption and allowed windows to activly look for networks which it does well but it will only do this for a short period of time. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem? Like I said the network will apper and I do have access to it on occassion but then disappers and will not return.

I have previously shared video over windows 7 homegroup with a WIRED connection to wireless devices such as a laptop (win 7 also) and ps3. recently however, I got a wireless card and moved my desktop making all devices wireless. now i cannot see any other devices in the network, nor connect to a homegroup. the problem seems to go away when i am hardwired to the router. on a sidenote, i think i remember noticing when my desktop was still hardwired, that i could share only one way -> from desktop to wireless laptop, but for some reason not from laptop to desktop. not sure though, i never really had a reason to share from the laptop to desktop. one last thing, i could view the ps3 as an "unidentified device" from the desktop and laptop in the media sharing options (could tell from mac address) but they would not show up in the ps
